Architecture studio-2 (2022)

The project involved creating a reading space as part of a community centre with only Brick masonry (no reinforcement) in Mandu. Making various iterations of structural systems through which a certain spatial quality could be evoked formed the crux of the studio.

The use of only Brick to build ensured that the full potential of the material could be explored, and that if at all used in conjunction with other materials, one would be able to understand how to build with it.

To understand the concept of supported and supporting spaces, various iternations of models were made and sketches of spatial quality used .

To carve out a space : Inspired by Kahn’s sketches of Castles, an attempt was made to carve void out of solid mass, and create little nooks that could be used as private reading spaces .

The project involved translocating Moshe Safdie’s proposed design for a court in Jerusalem to a site in Gandhinagar , facing the Vidhan Sabha.

Based on Safdie’s attitude towards designing and detailing, the project was redeveloped as per its new context. Studying the work of Kahn (Safdie’s mentor) in the similar context provided ideas as to how the spanning network could be developed.

Taking the local climate into consideration, the buildings were recessed to provide courtyards and corridor spaces which would shade the interiors from heat and glare.

The Project brief involved designing a Bus terminus in Vasna, Ahmedabad to replace the existing station. This had to be done taking into consideration the existing Site and street conditions, Bus routes, and the pre-existing users of the space (Vendors and hawkers). The main focus of the project was integrating a Function X (in this case, a Haat),into the Bus terminus to provide additional revenue to the station and increase its value.

The design focused on Quality of space, functions and their interdependencies, and resolving the Roof Structure.

This Project was nominated for the CEPT Excellence awards, Monsoon cycle.

The Book studio consists of a central spine of stairs gently moving downwards towards the river, flanked by two sets of corridors with minimal wall partitions inbetween.

To honor the river, the facade gradually opens up towards the river edge.

The stairs terminate at the lowest level and then take a turn, moving towards the basement lounge. Rather than letting the Spine remain an independent entity, the stair landings merge with the surrounding floor slabs. The studio uses a modular concept intended to give each user a sense of privacy in a public space, creating internal spaces through the bookshelves.

The Architecture of Civic Infrastructure The Palimpsest of Kadarshah ni Naal A Multi-use metro station in the heart of Old Surat city.

Observation of the Site (Kadarshah ni Naal, Surat) reveals that it is a Palimpsest. Beneath the layers of built form, there are traces, both physical and non-physical, of activites and artifacts that used to happen here.

The idea is to abstract each trace, to use as a design element in the making of the new metro. Because Kadarshah ni Naal is generally seen as a non-place, a space between neighborhoods with no distinct identity of its own, using design elements from these traces is seen as a way of highlighting the identity of the place.

Of these, the most distinct trace is the Naal. As it was, in the past, the anchor that held all the other neghiborhoods together, the idea is to highlight the importance of the Naal, by focusing most of the built space in that area.

Reading is an introverted act, something that is in stark contrast with a public space, A public library therefore becomes a threshold between the individual and communal. In today’s age, Libraries cannot merely function as repositories of books, they must also grow to serve the needs of a larger community. This project bridges its function as a city gathering space and a haven for introspection by encapsulating the essence of a city within a single structure.

Inspired by Ahmedabad’s walled city, it adopts the interplay of parallel walls and narrow streets that encourage neighborly interaction. Here, the walls curve and warp, embracing the library within, while the streets vary in width, expanding and contracting to flow into library spaces. This design blurs boundaries between public and private, formal and informal. At the heart of the structure, a central courtyard unites the two halves of the building, fostering connections.

The door was made entirely of Teak wood, with an M.S Frame, and could easily be disssasembled, packed and reassembled elsewhere. As it worked on pivots, it did not require the use of Door hinges and visually, appeared to free up more space than a normal hinged door would have.

It consisted of two vertical 800 x 50 mm Teak Joints with a Lock joint in the middle, in between which 20 mm thk Wooden purlins were inserted in a tongue and groove joint.

Ground Floor Plan

Standard Bricks used for infill and Cavity walls, and 50 mm thick bricks used for cladding.

Reinforced Concrete columns make up the Frame Structure.

Conceptual collage: “Learning from Las Vegas” was one of the most influential Architectural treatises of the past century. This conceptual collage aims to distill the essence of the book, showing its co-author, Denise Scott Brown, standing defiantly against the backdrop of the Las Vegas strip.

Spatial collage: An abstract collage to illustrate the threshold between a public and private space. The project is inspired by Aldo van Eyck’s quote about the house and the city, and aims to distill this concept into a single public building.
