Adaptive Reuse ‘International House, The University of Sydney’

Induction Studio Autumn 2024

Location:

96 City Rd, Darlington NSW 2008

International House introduces an unconventional way of living in the 21st century, akin to an experiment of future student housing where nothing in the room is fixed and boundaries are blurred.

Our approach to revitalising the site hinges on a strategy of conservation and retrofitting, aimed at preserving all key structures while modernising their interiors to meet contemporary standards–settling proper insulation, waterproofing and drainage system. CLT storeys are added to the east and south wings, and the resulting language is a sympathetic stepped set of buildings to the neighbouring site.

By adhering to the existing footprint, the dormitory provides a spacious interior with an impressive volume. The architectural response contrasts traditional and contemporary elements, breathing new life into the structure while honouring its historical roots. Removing almost all internal partitions, and modif ied glazing contribute to a bright and airy atmosphere within the once-dark compacted spaces.

‘Being imprisoned is the punishment, the architecture does not have to be’

The project aims to shift the punitive nature of incarceration facilities to institutions focused on rehabilitation, while upholding the highest standards of security and safety. With rising crime rates and increased demand for these facilities, it’s crucial to address the underlying issues that current systems worsen. By prioritising rehabilitation, the aim is to reduce recidivism and address the root causes of criminal behaviour.

The approach integrates prefabricated CLT modules with a dynamic exterior of receding aluminium cladding. This merges the structural benefit of rapid assembly, thermal efficiency, and sustainable material use with aesthetic versatility.

This project centers on the evolution of design within the frameworks of regulations and practice management. Students are acquainted with fundamental principles of key regulatory requirements, applying their understanding through site investigations and local practice case studies. The goal is to enhance the ability to apply knowledge within a specific context, demonstrated through an architectural design project taken to the Development Application level, adhering to best practices. The hypothetical project involves the design of residential alterations and additions, and encompasses the preparation of essential research and documentation required for the submission of a Development Application. This includes items such as a BASIX Certificate, Statement of Environmental Effects, DA Form, and accompanying drawings.
