H I T E C H R I S T M A S I N I N D I A ; I M A G I N E T H A T ! Most people think of India as a hot place but if you were to go to the mountains like we did for two days to Shimla (city at the foot hills of The Himalayas) you would be surrounded by the most beautiful tall evergreen trees covered with fresh snow. We spent our last Christmas at the Oberoi Hotel there. The hotel was totally decorated with Christmas trimmings including the ginger bread house, with beautiful and heart warming Christmas songs playing everywhere. The service in Indian hotels is to die for. They know how to make their guests feel pampered and served like royalty. It was the most beautiful white Christmas I have ever enjoyed and I am from Michigan where we have snow almost 6 months of the year. Life is a mystery and full of surprises like that. Keeping a healthy attitude to accept the changes as a medium for growth makes life exciting and worth living. We are starting our new year on a healthy note on many accounts. This year we are adding two more issues moving from a quarterly to bi-monthly. We are dedicating our first issue to the heart. Heart is not only a vital organ that keeps us alive physically; heart also gives us courage to love and enjoy our lives at its best and beats a little faster to tell us what makes us happy. The heart also longs to find the one it loves! As always, I invite you to please send me a note at veera@malibuchronicle.com for any suggestions or comments. I look forward to hearing from you.

BE YOUR OWN VALENTINE B Y

“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.”

“Control your reactions…… Know that you like yourself and don’t let anyone else push your buttons. If others do or say something insensitive or meanyou have no control over that. But you do have control over how you react.”

These words of love from the poet, Elizabeth Barrett, to her future husband, the poet, Robert Browning, have been immortalized thru the ages. Now, although it would be nice if we all could have our Lizzys and Bobs to be our Valentines, in most cases that would be a stretch. However, all is surely not lost if we could learn to love ourselves a little (and then a little more). If you can do this, then you, dear heart, can Be Your OWN Valentine. To Start With: Appreciate the rhythm of life……the ups as well as the downs. Just think. If you didn’t have any lows you couldn’t know and experience the thrill of the highs. And if your physical or mental instrument needs reviving, enjoy the many ways you can find to fine-tune it. Don’t be apathetic and expect others to be sympathetic. They may not be on the

same wavelength. Give yourself your own makeover. Don’t wait for the Oprahs. She’s on another network now. Be your own best friend……and then take a minute now and then to listen- really listen, to what you tell yourself. Listen to the statementsabout you, your body, your health, your abilities- that you make about yourself in your head. Then compare that to what you would expector hope- a good friend would say to you. You’d want that friend to be honest, sure, but you’d also like support and encouragement. You wouldn’t want him or her to say things like “You’ll never lose those 10 pounds” or “That dream of yours is in La La Land.” You want a friend who will believe in you, share excitement about your ideas, and nudge you toward your goals. Indeed, when you’re trying to change notso-healthy behaviors while reaching toward the stars, a friend can lend you just the support and motivation you need. So try keeping tabs on your own self-talk. When you hear yourself being unsupportive, try substituting the words of a good friend. Imagine how well you’d do if you could carry that kind of friend with you in your head. Control your reactions…… Know that you like yourself and don’t let anyone else push your buttons. If others do or say something insensitive or mean- you have no control over that. But you do have control over how you react. And reacting negatively to what others say can affect your sense of wellness. The best way to gain control over your reactions and stop wasting emotional energy on such negativity is to know yourself. Take an honest look at your strengths and your weaknesses. Then you can reflect on negative input from others in an objective way. You can decide that either the other person has a point – that they have, indeed, hit upon an area that you need to work on- or that they’re just trying to get a reaction out of you- in which case you can refuse to play the game. We all have our sensitive subjects and there are people who, for one reason or another, feel the need to push our buttons. In many cases you may not be the only one they’re doing a number on but perhaps

you’re the only one dancing to it. Don’t get sucked in. Before automatically reacting, think. Are they right? Then work on fixing it. If not, perhaps they need some fixing. Most people who lean toward putting others down don’t like themselves. And if they don’t like themselves, they have a difficult time liking anyone else. But that’s not your problem. You can’t change them. What you can do is change your reaction. You may be surprised at how much more energy you have to spend on productive thoughts. SO: Get to know yourself well. Know what you like and change what you don’t. Overall, stay away from people I’d label ‘socially impotent’ who only have brain space for thinking of themselves. They neither acknowledge, recognize, nor understand the word, empathy. Can’t even spell it. And, by the way, try recycling your memories…tossing out the losers and bringing the winners back around from time to time. Recalling great moments can recreate a most positive aura in your thinking, and it always pays to accent the positives. I promise you, if you can learn to be your own best friend, you’ll have a Valentine for life. Now…. “How do you love thee? I’ll let you count the ways.”

THE THREE MENTAL TE The MenTAL TeMpeRAMenTS of huMAn BeingS, Known AS gunAS in SAnSKRiT, ARe

[Tamas] Inactive Tamas is the state of thoughts in inertia. A mood of lethargy, indolence, indifference. Indisposed to activity. A condition of sloth and sleep. With no intellectual conviction to pursue. Nor emotional feeling to manifest. A person steeped in tamas lives a dull, inactive life. With hardly any response to the world.

[Rajas] Active Rajas is the state of passionate, desirous and agitated thoughts. When a person bristles with frenzied actions. Leading to his involvement in the affairs of the world.

Sattva, rajas and tamas composed in different proportions account for the heterogeneous variety of human beings. Every individual possesses all three gunas.

Between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. His rajas and tamas lie dormant during that period. Similarly rajas predominantly manifests at daytime between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. So does tamas show up at night from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. The law holds good for everyone. From the highest sattvik to the lowest tamasik person. The sattvik temperament is highest in a sattvik person. Less in a rajasik person. Least in a tamasik person. Regardless of the quantum, the sattva in a person manifests in the early hours. That explains why a sattvik person wakes up early. The pressure being low in a rajasik person, he wakes up late. The tamasik has to be virtually pulled out of bed. Besides waking a person up early, the other sattvik qualities clearly manifest at that time. Like being calm and composed, serene and contemplative. Being averse to plunging into gross physical activity. Or indulging in sensual pleasure. Hence, early morning is said to be well suited for contemplation. And the

sattvik time most conducive for spiritual practice. Study, reflection and meditation become effective between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. Thus, utilising the early hours and retiring early, you can increase your sattva, control your rajas and reduce your tamas. Just as sattva manifests early in the morning, rajas finds its expression during the course of the day. Hence people are found bristling with activity during daytime. The rajasik person, with a large proportion of rajas, becomes frightfully active. The rest also are prone to be involved in some form of activity from morning till evening, commensurate with their rajasik content.

Tamas emerges after 6 p.m. Indulgence in intoxicants, sex, gambling, etc. is conspicuous during nighttime. Most pronounced in tamasik persons. Less in rajasik and virtually absent in sattvik persons. These temperaments, gunas combined in different proportions account for the variety of individuals in the world. The role of a human in his lifetime is to gradually rise from tamas to rajas to sattva and reach trans-sattva. Wherein lies the supreme Self. The ultimate spiritual Enlightenment. To develop the personality and attain the transcendental experience you need to study and analyse these gunas thoroughly.

For this purpose, Chapter 18 of the Bhagavad Gita has classified different facets of human life, namely action, actor, knowledge, intellect, steadfastness, renunciation and happiness under the three gunas. An analysis that enables you to define the exact nature of your personality. You can then administer corrective measures where there are faults. And rise gradually to the trans-sattvik state.

HEART HEALTH BY DR. PRABHTEJ BRARA, M.D.

C “Noninvasive screening tests may be helpful in identifying if you have cardiovascular disease prior to being symptomatic.”

ARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE IS THE NUMBER ONE KILLER FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN. In many cases the disease may be silent, until it appears suddenly, and in other cases the warning signs of heart disease and a heart attack may be ignored. Unfortunately, a delay in diagnosis can mean the irreversible loss of heart muscle and tissue. Symptoms that indicate you may have heart disease can be quite variable. They may include, but are not limited to, an uncomfortable feeling or sensation in the chest, shortness of breath, dizziness, indigestion, jaw discomfort, rapid heart beating and passing out. It is critical that these symptoms be taken seriously and evaluated by a qualified physician. Recognition and correct diagnosis of the above symptoms may save your or a loved one’s life.

Other symptoms that also place you at higher cardiovascular risk may be those related to Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). These would include heaviness and tiredness when walking, leg fatigue, numbness in your legs, a sensation of tingling in your legs, loss of hair over the legs and/or discoloration of the toes. Interestingly, PAD in the majority of patients has no symptoms. However, a simple screening test in the office can tell you whether or not you have the disease, which is strongly associated with heart disease. It is important for people to be screened for cardiovascular disease. This will help determine your individual cardiac risk. Questions may be general, as well as specific to the individual, such as; do you have a family history of heart disease? Are you diabetic or do you have metabolic syndrome? Hypertention? High cholesterol? Are you a smoker? Do you have an unusual amount of stress in your life that has been chronic? There may also be blood tests that indicate that you have inflammation of your coronary arteries, which increases your cardiac risk, that you are unaware of. Despite answering, “No,” to all of these questions, you still may be at substantial risk. Noninvasive screening tests may be helpful in identifying if you have cardiovascular disease prior to being symptomatic. Choosing the correct test for you may identify if you have symptomatic or unrecognized heart disease. This, in turn, will chart a course for both prevention and regression of heart disease.

Prabhtej S. Brara, M.D. is Board Certified in Cardiology & Interventional Cardiology and Peripheral Vascular Disease, an expert in the treatment of both Arterial and Venous Disease as well as a member of the Cardiology Consultants of Santa Monica.

H E R E I S S O M E T H I N G V E R Y, V E R Y SPECIAL ABOUT A FERRARI. Anyone who has ever owned or driven one of the Italian automobiles can attest to it, which is why 67 years after the first model was built, the brand remains to be one of the most coveted marques in the world. Sure, there are some other carmakers that will contend they too hold the same prestige as Ferrari, but few even come close to the cachet associated with the luxury automaker. It’s an element of exclusivity recognized by everyone from the starryeyed kid who sees one of the cars on the road for the first time, to the more seasoned collector who finds himself taken by a classic model on display at an auction. As an automotive journalist, I vividly recall my first experience behind the wheel of a Ferrari in 2008 on the picturesque Canyon roads of Gateway, Colorado in a caravan of luxury cars owned by Discovery Channel founder, John Hendricks. During the course of an exclusive three-day press trip to the area, I practically had to be pried away from the two Ferraris on hand so others could have an opportunity to drive the cars. The feeling of sliding into the cockpit of that Ferrari F430 Spider and all the attention it got on our Western road adventure is still hard to forget. Lauren Mendelson, a friend who owns four Ferraris including a 2006 430F1, 2008 599GTB, 2011 458 Italia, and a 2014 F12berlinetta, said it’s the legacy of the brand that she’s drawn to most.

THE RICH racing heritage of Ferrari has contributed significantly to the longstanding appeal of the automobile marque.

“The heritage of Ferrari speaks for itself,” says the Michigan based car collector. “I still feel like a member of a very elite club. While l have a great appreciation for other high performance brands, there is still something very special about Ferrari that sets it apart from everything else.” It’s a sentiment shared by many, and nothing speaks to the unique appeal of Ferrari, which celebrated the unveiling of the new 458 Speciale in September, more than the recent prices reached by classic Ferraris in auctions around the world. In November, a 1964 Ferrari 250 LM went for US $14.3 million at the “Art of the Automobile” auction organized by RM Auction in collaboration with Sotheby’s in New York. In August, a 275 GTB/4 S NART Spider went for $27.5 million at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. However, the $52 million paid for a 250 GTO as reported in October reigns as the highest price ever paid for any road car. The process involved in buying a new Ferrari even holds a high-degree

M

K

of exclusivity compared to other luxury automobiles. “With an annual production of only 7,000 cars, new Ferraris are in high demand,” said Giacomo Mattioli, president of Ferrari Maserati Beverly Hills.” The purchase process begins by joining the waiting list at your local dealer. Once a production slot is ready to be configured, then the personalization component comes into play, allowing the client to truly have a bespoke vehicle built for them.” With only a limited number planned, the 458 Speciale, which arrives to U.S. dealerships this spring, is already completely sold out for its first year of sales. A lot of the passion for Ferrari can be traced back to the Auto Avio 815, the first car ever built by the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari, who was an avid racer. The 250 LM that sold for $14.3 was initially supposed to be a road car, but in 1968, it was bought by Guillermo Ortega and Fausto Merello, who were part of the Raceco team. The South American duo used the car in what’s widely considered the most important road endurance race in America, taking the class win and eighth overall in the 1969 Daytona 24 Hours, as documented by Ferrari. In fact, it's the racing heritage of Ferrari that fuels a lot of the passion around the automobiles, a legacy that will continue to live in cars like the new 458 Speciale for years to come. A

S A NEW YEAR BEGINS, MOST OF US SEEK NEW YEAR’S GOALS AND THOUGHTS OF HOW B E S T T O A C H I E V E T H E M . The definitive date of a new calendar year provides a framework to accomplish certain things that we are driving toward. Some people simply ruminate about what they want to do, and may do so without much structure or deep thought. Others actually write out, and typically categorize, goals that they set out to meet before the next year begins. A certain amount of planning is required in order to accomplish what we set out to do. It has been said, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Typically, it is much better to write out and categorize goals into certain branches of your life such as family, finances, professional, fitness and spirituality that you wish to improve. It can be a helpful way to ascertain things you wish to learn, improve upon or excel in, such as learning a foreign language, learning an instrument or becoming much more proficient in any of your avocations. Or, you may wish to give up certain habits, such as eliminate sugar to improve your health. In her empowering book, Living in YOUR Top 1%, Alissa Finerman, business/life coach, author and speaker, uses her experiences as a former professional tennis player, Wall Street professional and leadership coach to inspire people to redefine success, expand possibilities and create meaningful results. Alissa writes about the benefits of setting goals to achieve great satisfaction. Setting goals will help to: 1 Create the vision for where you want to go. 2 Clarify priorities. 3 Enhance your motivation level. 4 Provide a greater sense of excitement each day.

5 6 7 8

Build confidence. Help you stay focused. Give you hope. Increase accountability and results.”

Some of the world’s greatest leaders specify goals and state them publicly. For example, in 1961, in a speech before Congress, President John F. Kennedy announced that he wanted to send a man to the moon by declaring, “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving this goal before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth.” Those of us fortunate to witness the July 20, 1969 moon landing will never forget how captivated our nation and the rest of the world were because we achieved a seemingly insurmountable mission–all because of JFK's confidence and vision. Just a year before, in 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired millions for the Civil Rights Movement with his “I Have a Dream” speech. Years later, the recently deceased Nelson Mandela sought to eliminate apartheid in South Africa and succeeded. His quote, “It always seems impossible until it’s done,” truly emboldens you to achieve greatness. We can implement these strategies in all aspects of life on any scale and it is evident that the virtues of arriving at your objectives abound. The principles of success are uniform to us all, yet the visions and life enhancements we create with those principles are as unique to the desires we all have within. This is what makes the world a better place, and the amazing thing is that when we enhance our own lives, we have an overall impact on the collective momentum of the human race moving forward.

H E N A R R AT I V E G E N E R A L LY F O L L O W S T H I S S T O R Y L I N E : stem cells from a source, either umbilical cord stem cells, adipose tissue stem cells, bone marrow stem cells, dental pulp stem cells or simply blood stem cells are isolated and then injected in the bloodstream or directly in the organ of a person suffering from diabetes, spinal cord injury or some other degenerative disease. Other fascinating stories talk about tissue engineering and the reconstruction of, let’s say, a new windpipe or urinary bladder in a child using the child’s own stem cells. Or the work of an Italian doctor reversing corneal burns and giving back vision to people who had been blinded in some cases for decades, using the people’s own stem cells. The promise of stem cell research is truly mesmerizing. But behind this narrative woven by news stories that truly deserve to be told, there is a topic that remains largely untold and yet it is probably the most important because it concerns everyone. Before isolating them, tweaking them and injecting them in the body, stem cells are already present in everyone, so what is their role in a normal healthy body? What is the natural role of stem cells in the human body? It is the answer to this question that is called upon to change the way we view health and wellness, our understanding of disease formation and the very way we practice medicine. Stem cells are cells with the unique ability to multiply endlessly, or selfrenew in the scientific jargon, and to transform themselves (differentiate) into cells of other tissues. No other cell type in the body has this ability. All the other cells of the body are specialized cells (somatic cells) whose purpose is to perform one specific task. For example, beta-cells of the pancreas make insulin, cells of the heart con-

tract, cells of the retina respond to light, etc., and none of these cells have the ability to self-renew. Although resident stem cells can be found in almost every tissue of the body, the bone marrow is the ultimate source of stem cells. Before we go further, one clarification must be made. There are essentially two types of stem cells: embryonic stem cells (ESC) and adult stem cells (ASC). As their name implies, ESC are isolated from an eightdays old embryo and these cells have the capacity of forming an entire human body. ASC are the stem cells present in the body after birth. While ESC have huge potential, they also carry a high risk of forming tumors and for that reason there is still no treatment in humans based on ESC. All the stories that we read about in the news that involve treatments of humans are based on ASC. As far as treatments are concerned, the future of stem cell research lies in the potential of ASC. Adult stem cells have been traditionally known for a long time for their role in the constant renewal of blood cells – red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. But probably one of the most important discoveries of our times is the discovery that not only are ASC the precursors to blood cells, but they can also differentiate into virtually any cell type of the body. When placed in the presence of brain, liver or cardiac tissues, ASC will differentiate into functional cells of these tissues. In fact, ASC literally constitute the natural repair system of the body. Whenever the body suffers an injury – heart attack, cut, stroke, a broken bone or even a chronic degenerative process – the affected area triggers the

release of stem cells from the bone marrow and then attract these stem cells to the affected tissue. Circulating stem cells then migrate in the tissue and become cells of that tissue, literally repairing it. In this whole process, the number of circulating stem cells has been shown to be a critical factor; more stem cells circulating in the bloodstream means that more stem cells are available to migrate in tissues and contribute to the process of tissue repair. Many scientists are currently developing strategies and treatments aimed at increasing the number of circulating stem cells for the purpose of treating or mitigating the development of a wide variety of diseases. Yet, the most important is what all this information means to the healthy individual simply wanting to stay healthy or aiming at reaching optimal health: supporting the natural role of your own stem cells in your own body may be the best strategy to enjoy optimal health. How can one support stem cells function in the body? It is striking to discover that many things we know to be healthy actually have a beneficial effect on stem cells, while many things that we know to be unhealthy have a deleterious effect on stem cell function. For example, intense physical activity increases the number of circulating stem cells. Deep sound sleep is accompanied by the release of melatonin that was shown to support stem cell proliferation in the brain. Stress reduces the ability of stem cells to migrate in tissues and proliferate, and so does cigarette smoke. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant nutrition support the ability of stem cells to migrate in ailing tissues. In fact, the more we look at this whole phenomenon, the more it appears that we are looking at one of the main fundamentals of human health; supporting the natural function of stem cells in the body supports the natural ability of the body to repair and stay healthy.

are twice as likely to suffer a fatal heart attack and nearly three times as likely to suffer a stroke as those without periodontal disease. This association with heart disease is especially evident in patients under 50. According to the American Heart Association, an estimated 2,600 people in the United States die of heart disease every day. That's an average of one death every 34 seconds. There is an average of 700,000 people per year suffering from strokes. We are all creatures of habit, so we tend not to go to the dentist until something hurts. Other than bleeding, gum disease has few symptoms and rarely causes much discomfort. Well before the gums or teeth start to hurt, the dual forces of infection and inflammation in the mouth appear to hitch a ride in the bloodstream and travel to other parts of the body, wreaking havoc once there. For example, pneumonia occurs when bacteria dwelling in the oral cavity and throat are inhaled into the lungs where immune system defenses fail to fight them. In premature births, there is increasing evidence that infections in the mouth have a direct link to inducing premature labor. It has been well established that diabetes predisposes patients to bacterial infections, including those affecting the oral cavity. Recent studies provide strong indications that periodontal disease can make diabetes worse. Patients with artificial heart valves and joints are at increased risk of suffering infection when periodontal bacteria enter the bloodstream. What I find ironic are the thousands of dollars spent each year trying to prevent heart disease with expensive medications, fitness machines, healthy cookbooks, gym memberships, etc. Yet having a good home oral hygiene regimen and seeing your dentist at least twice a year can save you money and maybe even your overall health!

FTER PRACTICING HOLISTIC DENTISTRY FOR OVER 20 YEARS, IT STILL SURPRISES ME THAT THE MOUTH WAS NEVER CONSIDERED A PART OF THE BODY. Periodontal (gum) disease was not considered something that could have any impact. Yet several studies have found that treating periodontal disease can improve the function of blood vessel walls, improving heart health. Other studies have found periodontal bacteria in the arteries of people with heart disease and in the placenta of pregnant women with high blood pressure. Oral bacteria could also harm blood vessels or cause blood clots by releasing toxins that resemble proteins found in the artery walls or the bloodstream. The immune system’s response to these toxins could harm vessel walls or make blood clots more easily. Inflammation in the mouth revs up inflammation throughout the body, including in the arteries, where it can lead to heart attack and stroke. Therefore, patients with periodontal disease

Anatole Krasnyansky

BY TOMMY HAWKINS

THE UNCHARTED, WINDING ROADS TRAVELED BY LEGENDARY IMMIGRANT, ARTIST/ARCHITECT ANATOLE KRASNYANSKY HAVE BEEN PERILOUS.

From his 1930, pre-World War II birth in Kiev, Russia (U.S.S.R.) to registered nurse Rosalia and scientist/inventor Lev, to his eventual 1975 escape from Communist oppression and anti-Semitism, his story has been a tangled tale of two worlds. Anatole’s father died of leukemia at age 35, a condition believed brought on by his extensive, unprotected research into atomic energy. He left behind a grieving widow who vowed never to remarry and a 19month-old son.

“Never forget your past, never forget where you came from, never forget the accomplishments of your culture and the value of your traditions.”

Anatole’s father died of leukemia at age 35, a condition believed brought on by his extensive, unprotected research into atomic energy. He left behind a grieving widow who vowed never to remarry and a 19-month-old son. In 1941, with the war all around them and just before the German invasion of Kiev, 10-year-old Anatole and his mother evacuated to Stalingrad. From there they fled to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Avoiding the mine fields of war, the precocious young Anatole drew and painted everyday. Unlike other kids, he had no interest in sports or playing outdoors. Even at that early age, art was his avocation. He and his mother survived in a one room, dirt floor apartment with only a stove, a cot, a table and two chairs. There was no electricity. Long into the night, by candlelight, Anatole would create war scenes on paper next to the cot where his mother slept. He was obsessive. While in Stalingrad, the Krasnyanskys met fellow evacuees Alex and Irene Black. Alex was of Russian and English parentage, and a well known set designer and art director for the Leningrad movie studios. Impressed with Anatole’s talent, the childless Blacks offered to take him to Leningrad to be enrolled in the finest art school in the Soviet Union. It was an offer that Rosalia respectfully refused. She couldn’t bear the thought of being away from her son. In 1945, as the war was ending and the Krasnyanskys were still in Uzbekistan, the influential Mr. Black arranged to have several of 14year-old Anatole’s paintings featured in an art exhibit. It was the first for the young artist, who received great public praise. < CONTINUED ON PG. 28 >

Following the war, the Krasnyansky family returned to Kiev and held a meeting to discuss its collective future. There it was decided that Anatole would not be allowed to become a starving artist. Instead, he was enrolled at the Kiev Academy of Art and Architecture. There he received his first formal training to become an architect. Having painted all of his young life, Anatole remembered the day that sealed his fate. His maternal uncle and surrogate father, Lev (the same name as his biological father), showed him a beautiful portfolio of art and architecture displayed at the historic Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg (then Leningrad). That sharing was all consuming, fanning the flame that burned brightly within him. The succeeding six years were devoted to intensive, government sponsored architectural education. Anatole excelled as he mingled with other artists, architects, sculptors and designers. He graduated with a Master’s Degree in Art and Architecture. Having blended his new skills as a draftsman with his gifted ability to draw and paint, Anatole was ready to take on the world. But not so fast…in exchange for those six years of collegiate training, he owed the Soviet government five years of dedicated service, without the freedom to change his working place or position. Undaunted by it all, Anatole surged ahead. He fulfilled his mandatory obligation and was free to work where he chose. His skills could not be ignored. Anatole participated in open architectural competitions, winning first prize for his design of the Kiev Subway Station and the rendering of the House of Books in Alexandria. At the same

time, his art was accepted into several exhibitions organized by the Artists’ Union. Several of his works were purchased by the government and displayed throughout the country. Anatole dreamed of one day immigrating to America, but realized that in order to reach his goal, he had to become less visible. So for three years, he disassociated himself from high profile projects and concentrated on his art. When he felt comfortably outside of the social mainstream, and with the help of the International Jewish Federation, he applied for and received permission to leave the U.S.S.R. With his wife, Nelly, and 8-year-old daughter, Rimma, he boarded a freedom train to Vienna, Austria – then on to Rome, Italy. It was in Rome that the Krasnyanskys’ final destination was decided. Canada’s immigration package was far

more beneficial than the one offered by the United States, but to his wife’s dismay, Anatole pleaded for passage to America. After a five month stay in Italy, he got his wish and the family immigrated to Los Angeles. Their first 18 months in the United States was a frightening struggle to survive. It was 1975, Anatole was 45 years old, the nation was in fiscal turmoil, interest rates were high, all building related activities had come to a screeching halt and there were no architectural jobs available. Running on empty and hounded by the fear of becoming homeless, Anatole started knocking on doors of the television and movie industries. Eventually, he landed jobs at CBS and ABC as a scenic artist, and as a set designer at Universal, MGM and 20th Century Fox. With a background second to none, Anatole has established Prague himself as a world-class artist and architect. His artistic creations have been exhibited at Stanford, UCLA and San Francisco Universities, and they grace the walls of art collectors and homes throughout Russia, Europe and the United States. A 349page volume beautifully documenting the life and works of Anatole was recently published by the Park West Press. Since 1994, Anatole has enjoyed an exclusive relationship with Park West Gallery in Southfield, Mich., which is the largest privately owned gallery of original art in the world. Anatole proudly praises his wife of 56 years, Nelly. She has been the family’s guiding force. Having set aside her Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering, she is a dedicated mother and grandmother, business advisor and handler of all of the complexities of everyday life, giving Anatole the freedom to create. Describing Anatole’s body of work is not a simple task. His creations are colorful, complex, evocative and energetic. Using multiple images, they convey strong messages, invoking an emotional response. They incorporate his knowledge of art history and his love of many forms of music. Glimpses of his architectural background are ever-present. His evolution to international fame embodies many sectors of art, including realism, expressionism, cubism, and modernist surrealism. He spans the globe from Baroque to Rock ‘n’ Roll. As he paints, he preaches, “Never forget your past, never forget where you came from, never forget the accomplishments of your culture and the value of your traditions.”

EVERYONE EXPERIENCES STRESS, BUT WE EACH RESPOND TO IT DIFFERENTLY. Why do some stressful days give you a headache and other tough days result in hives or low-back pain? AnSweR: Because each type of stress triggers different fears, and the various fears are registered in specific areas of the body. QueSTion:

Your symptoms give you clues about how you relate to – and deal with – your stress. Western medicine has conditioned most of us to see our bodies as machines that break down and need help. Medicines are used to suppress our symptoms, but this frequently produces new symptoms (known as, "side-effects"). Some days it can feel like a never-ending battle, where your body seems determined to have "issues" and you're continuously chasing after new aches and pains. Over the past 20 years I've been thrilled to learn a new way of relating to physical symptoms. I work as a medical intuitive, and I've learned to see the energy within a person's body and to perceive information about each person's life. I now understand that the body is a feed-back loop, providing vital data about our lives. How you feel about your work, your kids and your spouse – all of these crucial facts are displayed by your body. My job is to "translate" what I see into feedback that each person can use to improve their health and their stress levels. By learning to understand the language of your body's feedback/symptoms you can realize which areas of your life are the most in need of change. I can help you understand this language that your body speaks.

After seeing thousands of clients I've observed patterns, places in the body where particular types of stress are stored. Let's look at one area where we frequently store stress – the stomach – to illustrate how your body's symptoms are an important source of information for you. Do you remember getting the feeling of butterflies in your stomach before you gave a speech in school? That's because our stomach area is where we feel stress when we're worried about how others see us. The uneasy feeling in your stomach was your body offering you information on the kind of stress that you were feeling – the stress of being self-conscious. If you frequently get stomach symptoms – indigestion, nausea, acid reflux, etc. – then you're probably internalizing stress in this area of your body. It's likely that you react to stress by worrying about how certain situations will make you look – to yourself and to others. There are many reasons why you might internalize stress in this way, but the result is that you focus on how things will impact your perception of yourself. You may have been raised in a family that taught you to worry about being blamed, or to fear letting people down. It’s probably important to you that other people perceive you in a particular way, and when that might not happen you feel anxiety. You may have a need to be liked, to be the peacemaker, or the problemsolver. In short, symptoms in the stomach area indicate that you are fearful that the outcome of your stressful issue may make you look bad and disappoint others. If this describes you, there are ways to help minimize your stress levels. First, check in with yourself to

try and accurately assess your role and your options. Accountability – owning your part in a situation and then offering to fix it – goes a long way toward maintaining a good impression. If people seem angry with you over a situation, look for how the other people involved are actually displaying their pain to you. Most of us were taught to believe the shameful and angry statements that others label us with when they're upset; but so often a person's reaction is about her own background of unresolved pain, and so the reaction is less about the current event and more about her history of similar situations. We each act out in ways that are hurtful not because we’re cruel, but because we are acting through our own pain, unaware that our reaction is out of proportion to the event. By seeking to understand the pain that is driving the other person's behavior, we shift our focus from feeling shameful and defensive to feeling compassion for the others involved. This softening will surely yield a clearer perspective on the issue at hand, as well as minimize the stress that you're feeling. The next time your body offers you a physical symptom, consider taking a new approach. Before you reach for the medicine that will block the unpleasant feeling, sit quietly for a few moments. Allow your body to speak to you. Be willing to feel the emotions that are subtle – the ones you might not notice if you rush through your day. It's amazing how often we can minimize our stress and our symptoms by being willing to honor the messages that our bodies are sending us, messages that can help us live more joyful lives.

What a wonder of nature! Look how far we've come from the planet's first inklings of organic life to arrive at this instrument that auto-pumps itself into action three weeks after conception, and continues to pump freely until we die. The heart is the unique muscle organ of the body. It is part of a pumping system cradled with the lungs. Only recently it became known that the heart is also a gland producing its own hormones. What ELSE does it do? Let us explore the many realms of the heart through the ages, in all its physiological and metaphysical manifestations. Do we really know the heart and its potential? The heart is the first organ to form. It is the organizing mech-

anism for the physical formation of the entire body, including the brain. The heart contains extensive brainlike neural matter–meshes of opposing muscles that pump out our lifeline of energy. Cardiac muscle tissue cells have ten times more energy-producing mitochondria than any other cells, so it has the ability to create and maintain an entire electromagnetic field around the body. Thus, in addition to our cerebral brain, we indeed have a "heart brain," as recognized by the ancient Egyptians who would entomb it by itself in a special urn. The heart not only puts out its own balancing and regulating hormones, but also instantaneously communicates electromagnetic and chemical information to the rest of the body and to other bodies near it. In Chinese theory, blood originates from the transformation of food. The spleen and pancreas distill the stomach's ripened food into an extremely fine, purified essence. This essence is transported upwards to the lungs, where it is aerated with oxygen and the finer energies that surround the planet known as Chi or Prana, or Bio-Vitality. All this makes the essence truly alive and nutritious as it pumps through the heart. In India, the ancients were capable of detecting the energy vortices that float along our vertical midline, from our seat to above our head. The term Chakra means, ‘spinning wheel of energy.’ Each of these energy centers has its own vibrational frequency and governs a part of the body and its own domain of emotions. The heart–the fourth chakra–is the center of them all and affects all the others. In many cultures–including our own–the heart is considered the seat of our emotions. Medieval troubadours promoted the theme of romantic love and poetry of the heart. Our culture remains obsessed with this theme of true love, as seen in the majority of songs, novels and films. Yet this is more than just pop

culture or Hallmark Cards hype. Physiologically, the heart IS where our emotional center resides. In the heart/solar plexus region, we have a preponderance of receptor sites for endorphins, our natural feel-good opiates. The Chinese call it the home of the Shen, or spirit. The term “respiration” comes from the concept of “re-spiriting”–spreading our spirit or the Great Spirit all through the system by breathing with attention. If we breathe deeply for long enough, we can start to feel our pulse and the moving fluids, and feel the vibration that is always present but typically unnoticed. While the heart is designed to be the center of unconditional love, it is often wrought with negative reactions to life's ups and downs. In our culture, we expect both art and life to have a good dramatic plot requiring adversity, dramatic tension, crises and lots of pathos. Many love songs depict a broken heart and lost love; most films contain assault and murder. This is what we pay money to watch as “entertainment.” Our typically low emotional IQ wallows in grief, hatred, anger and jealousy. Whether we expose our poor nerves to real-life or fictional dramas, the effects are traumatic for the body. Over the years the plaque of so many

grievances, resentments and disappointments collects in the emotional center. This build-up creates an armoring strangle-hold that cuts the body in two down the middle, obstructing the flow of energy down acupuncture meridians and the heart itself. The result can be a hot head and cold feet. At the top, symptoms include headaches, heartburn, tight muscles and even ringing in the ears, as the excess energy is under pressure above. Meanwhile, below we might have low back pain, poor flaccid intestines, low libido and varicose veins. This problem of heat rising and topheavy energy is one of the main imbalances that an acupuncturist addresses–treating the emotional center to alleviate the pressure cooker in our middle. How can we heal the heart? When we become aware of the heart energy by breathing into it with all our attention, we can improve our coping mechanisms and feel our heart's field of energy connecting us to the universe, to our planet, our community and our inner core. Our spirit must be nurtured by our respiration–re-spiriting our whole body. By knowing the make-up and the infinite capacity of the heart, we can experience this bliss of unconditional love and let our heart continue to feed us so well.

In those 90 days, thousands of young Lieutenants like Leon were trained, and within four months, these brave young men became Higgins Boat Commanders and were sent to the Pacific to ferry young United States Marines into battles on what was known as, "island-hopping campaigns," all the way to Japan. Leon is a WWII veteran of six pacific battles, from Iwo Jima to the Battle of Saipan. But the one that still haunts him to this day is the Battle of Tarawa, where 1,139 U.S. Marines were killed in 76 hours of bloody savagery. "I can still smell the stench of the rotting corpses," Cooper says after all of these years. "It is something you will never forget." This was the first time in the history of warfare that a full frontal naval assault was held on any enemy stronghold, and in those 76 hours, over 5,000 Imperial Japanese Marines would be killed. It was the biggest loss of life in the three-day time frame in the history of warfare, only being outdone 90 years earlier at Antietam, during the Civil War. Some 64 years after the Battle of Tarawa, fate intervened and I was introduced to Leon at the UCLA Book Fair in 2007. It was really an odd thing to meet Leon, as I had

been there over three hours and not spoken to anyone, and on my way out, I just happened to see him at a lonely table by himself and we struck up a conversation. He had just published his new books at the time, 90 Day Wonder: Darkness Remembered, and The War in the Pacfic: A Retrospective. To say that Leon and I hit it off would be an understatement. That fortuitous meeting would take both myself and Leon Cooper around the earth three times, attempting to clean the beaches of Tarawa, and bring home U.S. Marines from WWII still buried all over the Pacific. There are 88,000 MIAs from WWII that never came home, and Leon Cooper is the last WWII veteran in the fight at the age of 94! Leon, who struck up a friendship with Ed Harris, convinced Ed to narrate our first film in 2008 called, “Return to Tarawa: The Leon Cooper Story.” This film was picked up by Discovery's Military Channel and seen by millions around the world. The film was so powerful that it made its way through the halls of Congress, and legislation was enacted to mount a mission in 2010 to go back to Tarawa and look for over 500 U.S. Marines still buried somewhere on this tiny atoll the size of Central Park, some 7,000 miles off the coast of California. I was honored to accompany 17 members of JPAC (Joint POW MIA Accounting Command) with my producer Matthew Hausle back to Tarawa on a 42-day mission to dig in six locations. To be able to fly halfway around the earth on a C-17 Globemaster with this historic mission was the thrill of a lifetime. After an exhaustive search in the searing equatorial sun, we documented the efforts of this young contingent of Marines, Air Force and Navy personnel, whose tireless efforts for over six weeks yielded the remains of two U.S. Marines from 1943. A full military repatriation was executed on the tiny tarmac of Tarawa, and 45 U.S. Marines flew in for this special ceremony. All of this hap-

pened though the caring and thoughtprovoking work of Leon Cooper, who has never left the fallen behind in his heart. When we returned in late 2010, we began the editing process and took the project to the legendary actor and Malibu resident Kelsey Grammar. His grandfather was in the Pacific in WWII. Kelsey not only lent his symphonic voice to the 65-minute narration, but he also helped with the marketing by going on the Larry King show with me. Thus, the new film called, “Until They Are Home” (JPAC MOTTO) was born. The movie resonated with America and the Academy and was shortlisted for the 2012 Academy Awards. Country music star Clint Black threw in his hat and wrote the theme song, and the film debuted on Memorial Day 2012 to over 1,000 Angelinos and a platoon of U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton. WWW.UNTILTHEYAREHOME.COM was just acquired by NETFLIX and is now being seen in 41 counties in the streaming capacity. I am receiving emails from all around the world from veterans and regular folk who truly love the film. I want to personally thank Leon Cooper, who is at this very moment fundraising for another mission that will take him to Japan and New Guinea to look for more of Americas 88,000 MIAs from WWII. Leon's tireless actions and constant vigilance should be a lesson for all of us that nothing is too hard, too big or too impossible to make a difference. Leon has spent over $200,000 of his own money for these films, and that, in itself, is patriotism at its highest level. Semper Fi, Mr. Cooper!

EVERY DAY IS A GOOD DAY TO BE ALIVE! BY JENNIFER GAMMONS-MUJICA

“BINGO! PROBLEM FOUND; BUT IT WOULD NOT BE FIXED EASILY. THE LOCATION AND SIZE OF THE ANEURYSM REQUIRED BRAIN SURGERY.”

I

RECENTLY LEARNED I AM A MIRACLE. Yes, a miracle! Life had been tough the past two years; I had been in survival mode for my family, children and future. But me...a miracle? On an early morning walk, I came across an elderly woman with her dogs and stopped to say hello. She shared that she'd recently lost her husband. I detected the need for companionship, so I stayed and pleasantly chatted. Her Lab was being very protective, and she explained, "Before my husband died, every day he would talk to this dog and tell him to protect Mama after he was gone. Dogs really understand! He's so protective he attacks dogs coming at us during walks!" I shared that my dog had become overly protective too, since I survived a brain aneurysm last year. He wouldn't leave my bedside during the three months of recovery. She looked at me like an angel had appeared! "You are the FIRST person I've ever met who survived a brain aneurysm!" I smiled at her proudly, "I know I am so blessed! EVERY day is a good day to be alive." A year after my medical trauma, I am still so grateful for every breath I breathe. The world glistens with more beauty after facing my mortality. Throughout late 2011 and most of 2012, I suffered horrible symptoms that baffled all the physicians. I had confused thinking, lost all creativity (a tenmonth writer's block) and couldn't organize my ideas enough to even write up a grocery list. I was also on an emotional rollercoaster. Almost a year of misdiagnosis and treatments did not find the cause of my symptoms. < CONTINUED ON PG. 40 >

Write down your questions beforehand. Take notes during your appointment. • Think Positive & Be Positive! This old slogan is crucial to your recovery. Inner strength and positive thinking improves mood. I've been told a positive attitude strengthens our body's immune system to fight disease.

TipS

• Do NOT suffer silently alone. If you notice changes in your body (physical or emotional) call a physician immediately for a checkup.

A mini stroke (T.M.I.) in May 2012 landed me at a neurologist's office. Testing began–CT Scans, MRI's and neurological tests–with no answers. Months later a CT Angiogram (the final test) found a large, dangerous aneurysm in the frontal lobe of my brain that controls executive functioning skills. Bingo! Problem found; but it would not be fixed easily. The location and size of the aneurysm required brain surgery. I lost an entire year of my life. I felt so powerless! When a major medical crisis appears suddenly, it's easy to fall into negative thinking. I had lost all my professional abilities and stopped working for months. I owned a consulting business, but by mid-2012 my income was $0. The domino effects were tragic and impacted everyone involved. I was close to giving up many times, but I had a husband and two beautiful children who needed me healthy and alive. My Faith in God kept me fighting, even when I didn't want to fight. My sister back in the Midwest talked me through the hard days by phone and my family supported me every step of the way. My surgery was successful! One year later I am healthier and stronger than ever before. Medical traumas bring life to a screeching halt and force us to change our lifestyle or risk getting sick again. I was raised in a hardworking family, but I let go of the overachiever mentality and learned to love ME and value ME separately from career achievements. I prefer being active and busy, but now remember to take time for self care. Each day I enjoy an afternoon siesta and make healthier food choices. I modify my exercise levels based on my energy. Stretching and breathing can be enough, instead of an intense, one-hour cardio workout. True personal wellness is a balance of physical, emotional and spiritual health. I'm so grateful I learned this lesson in my forties. I am looking forward to a healthier future! If a medical diagnosis has suddenly changed your life, don't give up! Be Positive. Be Patient. Remember that every day is a good day to be ALIVE!

• Get support from family, friends and your faith-spirituality (whatever your practice may be). • My personal favorites! Drink alkaline water to achieve a healthy pH level, eat superfoods and watch comedy shows. Laughter truly is the best medicine. Get lots of rest. Laugh. Dream. Love!

O MATTER WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOU’RE DOING, WHERE YOU’RE GOING, OR WITH WHOM YOU’RE SPEAKING, YOU’VE GOT AN UNDERLYING THOUGHT IN YOUR HEAD THAT’S INFLUENCING YOUR EVERY MOVE, WORD AND DECISION. When you go to work, you might be thinking, “It’s only Wednesday? You’ve got to be kidding,” or, “I can’t wait to kick ass today!” When you’re sitting in the bleachers at your son’s hockey practice, your thought could be, “When do these ridiculous 4 a.m. practices end?” or, “I wouldn’t want to be any place else.” And when you’re about to open the door to your house to greet your wife, your thought could be, “What fresh hell awaits me today?” or, “There’s a love affair in our home.”

it’s with you 24/7.”

“When you embrace this context of there’s a love affair in our home,

This underlying thought is your context. Your context affects every move you make. Every gesture, word, thought and all of your energy is coming from this place, whether you’re aware of it or not. You can’t fake your context, no matter how smart you think you are. You might believe you can fake it, but those around you—who are paying attention—will know. Your wife definitely knows! So, to have the kind of relationship you’d like, you’ll want to begin with a new context. Consider the sea change that could take place in your home when you jettison your current, negative context and replace it with there’s a love affair in our home. What does a love affair look like? It would probably include doses of intimacy, great sex, humor, generosity, mutual respect and support, love, adventure, compassion, patience and romance. And what would you need to change to cause all of this to happen? When you embrace this context of there’s a love affair in our home, it’s with you 24/7. It’s there when you wake up, when you receive a call from her during the day, when she asks you to do something around the house, and when the two of you need to figure out how to discipline your hormonal teenagers. When you commit to this new context, it now rede-

fines everything you do with regard to your wife. You’ll now willingly comply with her reasonable requests. You’ll think of new and creative ways to show her you love her. You’ll be a better listener because you’re conscious about caring for her. You’ll make life together more about her than about you. And as a result, you’ll bring her closer to you. You’ll continue to grow as a man, seek out wisdom, read books and connect with other men who can support you to maintain this fabulous new context of yours. When there’s a love affair in your home, not only will it impact your marriage, it’ll also provide a new and superior example to your children. Your kids are watching and absorbing everything you do and say. And when what you do doesn’t align with what you say, the kids are aware of that, too. Again, you can’t fake your context. For the most part, your son is going to grow up to be a man much like you. Your daughter will find a man very much like her daddy. If you maintain your current, less-than-stellar context, your kids will reflect that choice as adults. And what you show them will live on for future generations. Think about it. How did you become the man you are? Where did you learn to be a man in your relationships? You probably inherited much of what you know and do from your dad, who got it from his dad. And so it will go. It’s called legacy. A few of you lucky men witnessed a love affair in your parents’ home. You saw what a loving relationship looks like, and how that mutual respect affects everything that happens in a home. But for the rest of us—most of us—we have to make a conscious choice to learn a new way of relating to our wife so that we can have a healthy marriage, and raise children who will seek out healthy relationships of their own. When you decide to embody the context, there’s a love affair in our home, you will be in love with the results. And generations to come will be impacted by the legacy that you’ve chosen to create.

Miller, vice chancellor of Pepperdine University. AMPS believes students in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will be better served by separate Malibu and Santa Monica school districts. AMPS have studied the changes that would occur and the impact on stakeholders. There is sound reasoning and data to support this conclusion. An independent Malibu School District would allow the Malibu com-

munity to bring our schools to the forefront of educational innovation, technology and student focus. AMPS has the support of the Malibu City Council and the benefit of a favorable feasibility study by WestEd, a nonprofit education research agency. AMPS and its members educate Malibu and Santa Monica parents, teachers, community leaders, neighbors and friends about how an independent Malibu School District benefits every student by creating self-determination and independence in public education. You can become involved in the movement for an independent Malibu School District by making a donation and becoming an active AMPS member. Your participation and support will help AMPS make Malibu schools the best they can be.

I SO APPRECIATE THE ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION TO MY ONLINE BLOGS REGARDING MY VARIOUS EXPLOITS. TODAY I RECEIVED AN ARTICLE WRITTEN ABOUT ME IN THE INDIA POST. I WOULD LOVE TO SHARE IT WITH YOU AS IT ANSWERS MANY OF THE QUERIES THAT ARE OFTEN ASKED. PLEASE READ WHAT INDIA POST HAS TO SAY...

Veera Mahajan – Role Model for Contemporary Indian Women By J.S. Bedi and Jenny Cadena

In many ways Veera is an ideal role model not only to contemporary Indian women but to also women in general.

I

ndian women have come a long way over the past 6 decades or so since India’s independence in 1947. They have emerged from the shadows of their male counterparts, so today we find Indian women in the full front of almost all professions including politics, military, the corporate sector and media. It is to their credit that Indian women have not only continued to excel in India but also oversees. A lot of this expansion has come about with women’s empowerment thru education, talent and equal rights. A very good example of this success story in our own neighborhood is So Cal’s own Veera Mahajan. Originally from Jalandhar in the Indian state of Punjab. Veera came to the United States as a typical shy giggly Punjabi teenager when her parents emigrated. In the years that followed Veera transformed to a successful woman in her own rights. She started off with a BSC in Computer Science from Wayne State University in Michigan, and became a successful businesswoman in the Software industry. Her life embarked upon a course that blossomed a multifaceted personality in different professions. Currently she is perhaps the only Indian woman in this country to own a mainstream American publication. The magazine is called, Malibu Chronicle and is published bimonthly from Malibu. It is expected to go monthly in the near future. The magazine covers a host of positive issues reigning from day to day life, health issues, art and culture www.malibuchronicle.com.

Apart from being a magazine Malibu Chronicle is a platform for Veera and anyone else who seeks self-expression. It is the springboard to Learning to L.I.V.E., a campaign “SAY NO TO ABUSE and L.I.V.E”. L.I.V.E. is an acronym for; Learn to love yourself, Insist on being free, Victory over victim Syndrome, Empowerment. She is also currently putting the finishing touches on her book also titled L.I.V.E., and should be hitting bookstores early 2014. With the encouragement from friends she signed up to compete for the title of Miss Asia USA, representing India. What was originally perceived as a fun experience won her the title for 2013. She is producing a film under her production company Veera Veera Productions. In spite of her hectic publishing schedule, she takes time out to indulge in her other passions yoga, dancing and boxing. Her insatiable thirst for knowledge took her to an education in Spiritual Psychology and now has brought her to Pepperdine Law School, she plans to graduate next year, specializing in Mediation and Dispute Resolution. While she juggles many hats, her priority is being a Mom to her two sons, Kunal and Rahul. In many ways Veera is an ideal role model not only to contemporary Indian women but to also women in general. She is a totally self-made and credits her success to her intelligent risk taking abilities and follow- through with hard work.

*India Post is the Indian-American weekly with readership and 100% receivership on par with the top 20% of mainstream newspapers. The paper covers important stories about people of Indian origin living in America and Canada, Fiji. Trinidad, Tobago, Africa, and all over the world.

I don’t do things just to impress someone else, nor do I avoid doing what I like just because I am afraid. Since I agreed to love myself, I find love and loving people everywhere.
