Dave’s Desk
The 2011 Spring Bull Sale Season was very strong. Generally speaking, breeder sales had higher highs and certainly higher averages. I understand that other breeds met with strong demand as well, however there were substantially more Angus bulls traded. I would anticipate that with the name recognition that Angus has in the retail end of the industry, this demand for Angus will remain strong.
the cow numbers in this country. Demand for calving ease heifer bulls was abundantly clear at spring bull sales, as well as through private treaty. If I have missed the mark on that, economics certainly put it in the forefront of cattlemen’s minds with the market price breeding cattle achieved this spring. I have heard a lot of talk about the number of people getting out of the cow business, however when it gets to be more profitable there will be renewed interest. While there are many factors that affect our business over which we have no control - extreme weather, the U.S. dollar, political policies, consumer acceptance - but all in all, we are in a very positive position. The availability of information and the speed at which it travels in this day and age is nearly unimaginable.
important to remember the lessons learned when things were not that good. It becomes tempting to increase the number of bulls marketed. Dipping deeper into the bull calf pen and relaxing the requirements to be deemed a ‘sale’ bull will over time have an adverse effect on both the breeder and the breed. Keep your knife sharp and don’t be afraid to use it. The Angus fraternity is entering a new chapter of their history. The future is always exciting and there will be many new methods of cattle appraisal, record keeping and promotion that will come along. Based on our cattle numbers, the position of the industry and how fast things change, we are in for a stimulating new era. See you down the road!
Dave Callaway I believe we are now into a trend of rebuilding

Obituary - Don Conway
Donald Keith Conway March 14, 1941 to February 17,2011 On the early morning of February 17, 2011 Donald Keith Conway of Eckville, Alberta passed away at the age of 69 surrounded by his family. He will always be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his wife of 47 years and their four children Kim Colleen(Brian) Geis of Barrhead, Trevor Keith Conway of Markerville, Lyle Theadore (Michelle) Conway of Eckville, Jannette Rae Conway and special friend Fritz Wilson of Eckville, also by his six grandchildren; Jenna Christine and Robert Donald Geis, Joel Theodore, Abigail Victoria, Amber Kim, and Gabrielle Roland Conway. Don is also survived by his sister Barbra Campbell of Beaumont; Uncle Ivar Nelson of Veteran , Aunty Linnea Conway of Consort and many nieces, nephews, brother and sister-in-laws and many friends. Don was born in Viking to Viola(Nelson) and Keith Conway. He grew up and attended school in Veteran and Consort, spending lots of time on the Conway family farm. He then graduated from Consort High School. Dad achieved a Honor diploma in Radio and Electronic Technology at S.A.I.T and worked as the Accounting Machine Field Repair Manager for Bourrghs Business Machines - the 2nd largest in the world, eventually absorbed by IBM. Dad then continued his education, receiving a diploma in Instrumentation at Taylor Instruments in Rochester New York, a course on Gas Plant Operating thru Petroleum IndustryTraining, Gas Plant Operator Diploma at P.I.T.T.S in Edmonton and Class Four Engineer Steam Ticket at N.A.I.T and his Journeymanship in Instrumentation. He used his expertise to land very good jobs, employed in the
Page 22
Angus World
Oil/Gas Industry in plant and field maintenance, operating, instrumentation for Hudson Bay, Dome Petroleum in Caroline, Garrington, Sylvan Lake, Libya and Zama Pine. He started working in this industry in 1964, and developed his own company in 1978. He also completed a number of agriculture courses at Olds College in combining, cerals and crops, animal health and nutrition and many safety certificates. In 1966 Mom and Dad expanded the work load in owning some commercial cattle. This developed into one of his loves in life - Purebred Red Angus cattle. They started the purebred herd in 1974. Mom and Dad purchased 6 heifers from Sally Forbes in the United States. In 1979 they purchased one of the grassroot genetics "Red Premier Patriot 16", he was one of three embryos(two black, one red) bred by Premier Angus. This bull made huge impact on the industry and is how most of you will probably remember Dad. Many prominent sires were used in the Red Eagle Acres herd, Choctaw Chief 373, Red Line Citation, Umpire 1000, Leachman Chflne 5827, Get-A-Long Licorice to name a few. The Lidela, Kuruba, Lace, Rebecca, Marta, Olivia and Lass cowlines would produce many great progeny. Dad love to travel to the US to visit the Red Angus world there he made many friends. But some of our families most memorable memories where made at the Canadian Red Angus Promotional Society's Field Days, Tours, and Annual Meeting(oh the jokes that where told). Mom and Dad hosted some of the field days where many fun times were had by all. Dad would get such a kick out of Lucille Glacier and her fireworks and watching Mom beat everyone in the obstacle courses and squaw wrestling. We attended many shows and sales over the years, Dad loved to go to the Lloydminster Stock Show and will always remember our Champion Female at the NILE. The little fairs in the summer where fun, especially the Little Markerville Fair. Every year till us kids where to old to go we went to Bashaw to the National Junior Heifer Show, many many life time memories were made there. The Red Angus Industry is full of many dear friends. Dad was a fabulous meat cutter and will always be remember by many carving numerous roasts at the Hayshaker and Bull Sales, always with a smile, trying his best to slice you your most favor piece of roast - "the best meat slicer in town."
Spring Edition 2011
He held many position and was active on the Canadian Red Promotional Society, Alberta Angus Association and the Canadian Angus Association. He took great pride in standing on these boards, took many issues to heart and was proud to represent the Angus breed in his travels. He also helped develop a Bull Test and Sale in Strathmore called the Canadian Reds, which was very successful for many years. Dad enjoyed many things in life, first of all his grandkids, fishing, travelling, sailships, history, electric model trains, antique tractors and aircraft, museums, orchids, reading(expecially old westerns), wildlife, curling, visiting with neighbors and friends, and a dedicated football fan. He was a mastermind in knowing how things were made or how they operated. He designed and built many project, including a bale shedder. Electrical instruments big or small was his expertise. Many say that Dad was a pleasure to visit with, he was a very interesting gentleman with a warm heart and compassion for others, a tall strong gentle giant always with a smile and a twinkle in his eye, a good friend and neighbor, was proud of his family, had a wonderful sense of humor and lots of knowledge to share, that they were blessed to meet him and will miss his friendship. He loved his grandkids so much and was always proud of what they were doing, always attending many of their activities. Mom and Dad had a great farm for us kids to grow up on, always full of excitement. We had everything on our farm cows, sheep, horses, donkeys, peacocks, milk cows, pigs, chickens, dogs, cats, a huge garden and were given all opportunities in school, sports, 4-H, and social clubs, also taking us on many wonderful holidays - sleeping in tents, homemade topper and riding in our purple truck. Dad was our go-to-person for whatever question we had or advise we needed and could fix and make anything. Most importantly as we grew up they taught us the important things in life, honesty, respect, integrity, the value of a friend, love and kindness and always to have pride in what you do. He helped us with all our journey's in life and how to stand on our own two feet, but if we stumbled he was there to catch us. We dearly miss him, his hugs, holding his hand and the strength he poised as he was taken from us too early in life. We are proud of you Dad. Love your Family Thank-you to everyone for your thoughts, prayers and gifts.
Alberta Angus Association Message
Although it has been a long and cold spring in terms of weather, bull sales across Alberta have been exceptionally strong over the past couple of months. Due to higher cattle prices and a renewed sense of optimism in the industry,
the majority of sales, for both black and red bulls, saw strong increases to their average. The next event on the schedule for the Alberta Angus Association is our 2011 Annual Meeting/Hall of Fame Weekend. This will take place June 4th and 5th, at the Madden Hall. We will start the 4th with our Annual Meeting, followed in the afternoon by an informative speaker, Dr. David Chalack, who is renowned throughout the agriculture industry worldwide, and is the current Calgary Stampede Past President, as well as being the Chair of ALMA. Our Hall of Fame banquet will be in the evening, where we will honor our newest inductees. We will also be presenting our 2011 Purebred and Commercial Breeders of the year. On the 5th will be our AAA Golf Tournament. For more details on this
Angus weekend contact the AAA Office. Camping will be available at the hall, and hotel rooms will be available in Airdrie. I would also like to remind everyone of the AAA “One Stop Sponsorship. This is a sponsorship package that includes Angus Angle and website advertising, show and steak fry sponsorship, among other benefits. For details about our sponsorship levels or regarding our upcoming events, go to the Alberta Angus website, www.albertaangus.com. I would like to wish everyone the best of luck in trying to get there spring work done in adverse weather, and I hope to see you in Madden, June 4th and 5th for the AAA AGM. Colton Hamilton President, Alberta Angus Association
Manitoba Angus Association Message
Spring is trying to get going in Manitoba, but good old Mother Nature is still keeping winter around. Some nice warm weather would be nice to get the grass growing and the fields dry. I am afraid that spring keeps getting later and later but hopefully things will change soon. In only a short while Manitoba will be hosting the Annual General meeting on behalf of the Canadian Association. The meeting will be held from June 9th to 11th at Elkhorn Resort in Clearlake. We are honoured to
host this event and hope that everyone can come and enjoy this great weekend. We have selected a location that is very relaxing with beautiful scenery, lots of golf, and many other interesting things to do. This meeting will be a great opportunity to voice your opinion and bring up concern you may have with the association. I will enjoy seeing everyone at the meeting and would like to welcome everyone on behalf of Manitoba. Only a few weeks after the annual meeting, on June 19th, we will be holding our 2nd Annual Field Day hosted by Brent, Dale and Kelsey Stewart at Stewart Cattle Co. This is a time to sit back and visit with our fellow breeders, look at some cattle, and just have a fun time. I would like to extend a big thank you to the Stewarts for hosting our field day event this year and I hope the tradition will continue for many more years. On Sunday July 10th the association will be holding its summer show in conjunction with the Manitou fair. We hope that everyone will come out and support the summer
show. This is a really good event and it allows breeders to show Manitoba producers what they have to offer. November 3rd to 6th is the Manitoba Livestock Expo where we are holding the National Show this year. I hope that everyone will consider coming to this event to watch or bring a few head of cattle. Brandon has some of the best facilities around and it is always a fun show to be part of. This is a big year for our association and I am proud to be a part of it. We are working very hard to ensure that all our events are successful and we hope that everyone will take part in them. If anyone would like to talk to me about any event in Manitoba please feel free to give me a call (204) 573-6377. I would be glad to talk to you. Thanks Shawn Birmingham President, Manitoba Angus Association
Ontario Angus Association Message Greetings from Ontario! With most producers finishing calving, breeding season is well underway. The bull sales throughout the province have been strong. Remember to transfer your bull pedigrees to the new owners and be sure to talk to them about the Angus tag program too. Two of our regions have upcoming purebred sales, the Central Ontario Grass Time sale and the Ottawa Valley Select Sale, so be sure to check them out. Our Association is gearing up for a busy year. Our
first goal this year is to increase awareness in Ontario of Angus activities. We have updated our website and it is full of upcoming activities and results of recent shows. Our secretary has started sending email blasts to our members informing them of upcoming events. Our annual field day is on July 17th in the western zone. Our hosts are Victor and Yvonne Richardson, Cairnlee Acres, who were our purebred breeders of the year in 2010. There will be speakers, tattooing demos, fellowship and a great angus beef dinner. We have two
Ontario sponsored junior shows this year at Lindsay and Brampton fairs. We were fortunate to be awarded Showdown for 2012 and our juniors are working hard to present a great event. It was a great honour to have been named President of the Ontario Angus Association for this year. Please feel free to call me with your ideas or opinions; I welcome the chance to visit with you. Quebec Angus Association Message
Quebec bull sales have been associated with the test stations for a long time with the individual producers with a couple of exceptions selling by private treaty. The 2011 sales where the number of Angus bulls has been limited to a few have worked quite well with the demand being low. As in a past article where I wrote
about the apparent fear of commercial producers here to get “too much Angus” in their cattle, I believe that we will see this trend for a while here in Quebec. This has happened while the demand for “Angus” beef continues to increase in every market. Of course, as long as anyone with any product can use the Angus name it is only a matter of time until we see “angus” pork and chicken. Just stop and reflect when you see a truck with the side sporting a big display of “Presidents Choice Angus Meatballs”. Each time that I see the display I wonder if there is anything related to the Angus breed of cattle in this product. Don’t you? Field work here has been delayed this year compared to last year but that probably is a good thing for some who had a dry start to the summer last year. The cows sure are ready to look for anything that looks green to show their new calves.
We are looking forward to the next few months with the annual meeting of the Canadian Angus Association in Manitoba followed by the show season starting in July for members that get out with their cattle to shows including a Junior event in Brome Quebec July 8th to the 10th. The show season culminates with the Expo Boeuf event in October. We have a committee looking at putting together a fall female sale again after a one year hiatus. What’s my beef? Real Angus, not just a black hide! Stan Christensen President, Quebec Angus Association
Maritime Angus Association Message
Spring is late coming in most of the Maritimes, with cold weather, rain, and some snow still in some areas. However, Angus sales have been doing very well in
2011. The Nappan Bull Sale on April 2 went very well for the Angus breed. Nine bulls sold for an average of $3100, other breeds also sold for good prices compared to past years. At a recent feeder sale in Truro, a group of Angus influenced calves were one of the high selling groups for the entire sale. At the annual Carleton County Spring Show & Sale in Florenceville NB, Kyle Parkinson had the Champion Angus steer, which was also the Grand Champion of the show, which sold for $3.60/lb. The proceeds from the charity steer this year went to ALS, a disease that has stricken Bill Pryor of New Brunswick (a member of the Canadian Angus Assoc, and long time Angus breeder). This steer sold for an astounding $9.05/lb! Glenn Jay had the Grand
Champion Steer at the PEI Easter Beef Show & Sale in Charlottetown, with a cross bred Angus Steer. Congratulations go out to Jim Colodey on his re-election as Maritime Director to the Canadian Angus Association, and also to Rebecca Gilby as the new Maritime Junior Director. Thanks to Andrew Dixon for his time and hard work as the Maritime Junior director for the last two years. Here’s hoping everybody has had a successful spring calving season, and green pastures are just around the corner. Trevor F. Welch President, Maritime Angus Association
Canadian Junior Angus Association
Hello everyone, I hope that calving and breeding season is going well and Mother Nature has not been too mean! The main event coming up for the CJAA is Showdown 2011 which is being held in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, July 21st-23rd. The weekend will be filled with lots of Angus competitions and fun! We are looking forward to having a large number of participants this year and hopefully many new faces. Entry forms can be found in the recent addition of the Junior Connections, online Page 24
Angus World
on Facebook and our website at http://juniors.cdnangus.ca/juniors/showdown.htm. Just a reminder that we added a finished steer class so if your entry form does not have it on there, the class is still happening. The entry deadline for the early bird price is June 1st and the late deadline is June 20th. The CJAA will be having a live and silent semen auction at the banquet at Showdown as we have had a number of wonderful donations. As per usual we will also have other items for the auction including some of the art pieces that Juniors have entered in the Show. We will also be auctioning off our Calendar pages again this year so plan to do some advertising and support the CJAA by purchasing a page! We will also be selling dates and business card ads as well. Hope to see you in Weyburn! For those of you Juniors who are planning on attending post-secondary school or are already attending one, please remember to apply for our three $1000 scholarships that we have available. The deadline is June 15th and the application can be found on our website or in the Junior Connections. The CJAA is also continuing with our exchange

programs with the Junior Association’s in the States. The Junior Red Angus Association of America’s Round Up will be in Kansas and Missouri June 21st-26th. The American Junior Angus Association’s LEAD conference will be held in St. Louis, Missouri August 4th-7th. This is a great opportunity to meet some new people and see some new country! We have four new directors joining the board this July. Allison Speller will be replacing Jori Taylor in British Columbia, Kevin Bolduc will be replacing Amanda High in Alberta, Erin Toner will be replacing Miranda Frey in Saskatchewan and Rebecca Gilby will be replacing Andrew Dixon in the Maritimes. I would like to thank all of our retiring directors and welcome our new ones to the board. If anyone ever has any questions about the Junior program or what we are up to please give me a call or email! Erika Easton CJAA President
Canadian Junior Ambassador Hello Angus Breeders! I hope everyone is having a good spring even though the weather has been questionable! This will be my last official report as the Robert C. McHaffie Ambassador which means my term is coming to an end, which saddens me. This experience has been one I will never forget and the opportunities that I was able to gain through this were incredible. The people I met, places I was able to see and knowledge I gained will be forever valuable to me. I was able to attend the CJAA GOAL conference February 19-21 in Saskatoon which was an incredible weekend. I encourage all juniors to attend the conference next year as the CJAA board puts on a great weekend of fun and learning. It is a great mixture of learning valuable tools that Juniors will be able to use in their future endeavors with the Angus breed and fun team building activities! Next year it is going to be held in Regina, SK so there will be lots of new adventures to be had for Juniors! I was also able to attend a few bull sales throughout the spring. It was great to get out and see the optimism that is flowing through our breed and the cattle industry as a whole. I have been through the Junior program, and now the Ambassador program and realize how important it is to our breed to keep our young people involved and help them gain the knowledge to succeed. At our bull Sale on April 4th I donated one of my purebred heifers to the Black Baldy fundraiser campaign and sold her by dutch auction. I would like to thank everyone who supported me in my fundraiser and I am proud to say that we raised over $5,100 for the Kids with Cancer Society and the Canadian Angus Foundation. I would like to congratulate the Wildman family on their Dutch Auction that they completed at their sale with the proceeds also going the Black & Red Baldy Fundraiser. I encourage everyone to donate to this great cause! I would like to say thanks to Michael Latimer for helping coordinate the events I attended and to Joanelle in the CAA office for booking my travel needs. I encourage every junior when they are old enough to take advantage of this great program and APPLY for the Ambassadorship! Thank you, Erika Easton Junior Ambassador

Canadian Angus Association - CEO Message
Doug Fee
The audited financial statement for 2010 has been presented to and approved by the Board of Directors. Our annual report has been drafted and is on its way to the printer, plans are coming together for the Association’s 105th annual meeting, and the materials and background information for the Board’s spring meeting are being collected. These are all routine office assignments that are regularly completed but I’m approaching them with a little nostalgia this time because it will be the final time that any of them are my responsibility. After much thought and Board research, the Directors confirmed the selection of Rob Smith as my successor and your new Chief Executive Officer. Rob will be the second person to carry the Chief Executive Officer title. Prior to that, the position was known as General Manager and before that as Breed Secretary or Secretary Treasurer. Legally and officially, it could be argued we are still “Breed Secretaries” except the duties and responsibilities have expanded beyond what was expected of the Association secretary in 1906. Rob will be the 16th person to manage the Association. I have had the privilege of managing from 1994 through 2011 and am the second-longest serving manager in the Association’s history. F. W. Crawford of Brandon was the longest-serving from 1920–1946. J. P. Sackville was third; he managed from 1974–1960. Our fourth-longest serving manager was Jack Peaker from Guelph, Ontario, who was in the position for 10 years from 1971–1981. Much has changed for the Association and for the industry
since these other gentlemen managed your affairs and it is a safe bet that the future will continue to see changes. Statistics from Agriculture Canada confirm that we are still solidly established as Canada’s leading beef breed, accounting for over half of all purebred beef cattle registrations. The first quarter of 2011 has shown significant increases over the previous year as our key indicators of registrations, transfers and revenue have all increased from the previous year. Bull sale prices this spring were so strong that even the most pessimistic members should be pleased. Today’s progressive breeders of seedstock in the cattle industry have scientific tools, information and opportunities for advancing genetic improvement that were inconceivable a few years ago. A constant, however, is the need for an experienced cattleman’s intuition and sharp eye. If the breeder can’t evaluate structure, temperament, udders, feet and legs, all the scientific tools in the world won’t improve his herd. Since 1998, our Association has recognized those individuals and families who have successfully maintained their Angus herds for 50 years. To date, 121 families have received our plaque and this year another three families will be officially added at the annual meeting in Manitoba. It should not reduce the significance of maintaining a 50-year membership, but this year we are adding to our award program by also recognizing six families who have been active for 75 years and two others who have been with the Association for 100 years. These awards too will be officially announced at the annual meeting. This year’s annual report will be the last one issued under my management and it has been interesting reviewing the 17 that I’ve been responsible for. It has been an interesting and a challenging period for the Association and also a satisfying and rewarding one. I am very proud of our breed’s position today. Prior to my time here, the Association undertook to research and write an extensive long-range plan. That plan helped set objectives and challenges for improvements. In retrospect, it appears very modest and conservative, but it did contain three elements that enabled us to move the breed into the position
we are today. Four of the objectives were accomplished early in my tenure and were key to our growth and financial success. The first was to establish a breed performance program, the second to consider moving the office to Calgary, the third to bring our registry in house, and another was to establish a national Junior Angus program. Each of these has contributed significantly to our success. A challenge for your current Board should be to repeat the exercise and give the new Chief Executive Officer a renewed vision for the future for him to build on. During my time, I have been blessed with some exceptional and dedicated staff. Their aim has always been to provide the best possible service to members, within the rules of the Association. As a group, they were always looking for ways to improve programs and the way we do things. From Dr. Alyward and Grant Wilson through to Kirk Wildman and David Bolduc, I have served 18 Presidents and worked with 52 different Directors on the Board. Each has brought their own perspective and ideas and influenced the policy direction of the Association. You have been blessed with the dedication and commitment of the great majority of these men and women who have contributed their time and talents to the betterment of the Association. I’ve been asked what my best memories of the job will be. These are many and I’ve thought over the successes and challenges, the good and the bad.The best memories all include people. It has been my privilege to meet Angus breeders at events and meetings in every region of Canada, and the one constant is the hospitality and friendships created. To each and every one of you, I thank you for the memories and for the privilege of serving you for these years. To Rob Smith, I offer my congratulations and welcome to what has been described as the best job in the purebred cattle industry in Canada. May you enjoy the ride and move our Association even further along its journey to success.
have the responsibility to raise the question. The chair has the right to rule on a question of conflict or if the chair is uncertain the question could be put to a vote. The great majority of Directors, in my experience, are honourable people who would usually err on the side of caution and step aside for any discussion or vote where they may be perceived to be in conflict.
authorized expenses. These have not been huge amounts; a total of $537 in 2009 and $290 in 2010. Most of these monies were associated with Board-approved social and recreational activities. The CEO is responsible to the Board of Directors for the entire budget and expenditure program of the Association. To provide oversight, there are three elements in place for all Association expenses. The expense must be documented and coded to account and signed for by the CEO. The office manager prepares a voucher which is processed by a third person hired specifically for financial transactions and accounting. Secondly there are two signatures required on all Association cheques, and the Board’s third element is the in-depth audit conducted by a firm specializing in such work. They report to the Board in February and the audited financial report will be in the annual report to members provided to members in June.
Ask the CEO How does the Association handle conflict of interest with the Directors? Our Directors are in a difficult situation. In theory, every decision should be made for the good of the Association and not influenced by the needs of their individual operations. In reality, most Board policy decisions will affect every member. There is a principle in law referred to as “community of interest” that allows for Board members to vote on all issues affecting the general membership and not specifically themselves. There have been a few instances where some Directors either run or have an interest in a business that does work for the Association. It is the responsibility of the individual Director to recognize any potential conflicts and declare them. The President should then request the Director to leave the table and probably the room for both the discussion and the vote. The Board is self governing so if there was ever a case where there was perceived to be a conflict, all other Board members
Who is responsible for the CEO’s expense account and how much was paid for the past two years? An interesting question that is difficult to answer, depending on the definition of expense account. The CEO has travelled and attended meetings on behalf of the Association. Travel expenses, including hotels and conference fees, are all paid directly by the Association and will be combined in the annual audited financial statement with all staff travel expenses under Travel. I am reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses for legitimate

Canadian Angus Association - President’s Message
C A N A D I A N
As my time as President of the Canadian Angus Association comes to and end in June, I thought I would take this time to reflect on the past year and all that I have to be thankful for. The time I have spent as a member of the Board of your Association has been more rewarding and educational than I would have ever imagined, and it truly was an honour to serve the greatest breed Association in Canada. First of all, I am thankful to be a breeder of Angus cattle. I am preaching to the choir here, but raising a breed of cat-
tle that can take care of themselves, stay sound, and still be tops in consumer demand, is a huge plus. We live in a busy society, so spending time on important things in life, rather than teaching a calf to nurse, is something I am thankful for. I was raised with this breed; it’s great to see commercial breeders and consumers realizing the attributes of this breed and making it number one. I am thankful that we have a great group of incredibly dedicated and talented staff members. Whether it is registry, breed development, commercial programs, or management, we are truly blessed to have such a great group working on our behalf. I believe we are the envy of the industry with the programs our office has been able to implement and I am sure this high standard of service will carry on in the future. I am thankful to have been a part of a great Board of Directors. It has been an honour to serve on a Board with so many leading minds and talented people from within our industry. We have served different regions of our country, and represent different backgrounds, but the vision and mission of the Canadian Angus Association has always been the number one priority. Being a Canadian Director has
been an honour and it has been a privilege to serve with people that love this breed of cattle and put the interests of the breed before any personal agendas. Finally, and most importantly, I am thankful for the breeders that make this breed what it is. I believe the success of our breed is directly related to the dedication and skills of our members. When you see a world-class event like the World Angus Forum, it is a direct display of the talents and dedication of a group of people second to none. Our position in the international scene has never been better and our genetics have never been more popular. The thing I am most proud of is the quality of character and truly caring nature of our members. As my family went through a tough time this past year, we were continually overwhelmed by the support of our Angus friends. From cards and letters, to supporting the Baldy Fundraiser, to supporting families in need, the generosity of Angus breeders continually warms our hearts. I know our Angus breed will always be in great shape, with the quality of our members leading the way! Thank you again from “Our Outfit to Yours”, Kirk Wildman
The Angus tag program was developed way back in 1999 as a way to visually identify both purebred and commercial Angus based on their genetics. Ten years later and in conjunction with the World Angus Forum, the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program was launched. Angus branded beef programs that choose to participate in the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program are required to use the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed tag to identify Angus cattle. This program has seen considerable success and the number of participating programs continues to increase.
through the Angus tag is a more accurate system than identification based on hide colour alone. We all know that there is more than one breed with 51% black hide colour and they are now able to meet the grading requirements for Angus programs. Red Angus breeders should take note that according to Cindy Delaloye, General Manager for the Canada Beef Grading Agency, Red Angus require an Angus Tag to qualify for Angus beef programs because the tag goes beyond phenotype and recognizes genetics. If you are not using Angus tags already, I encourage you to take a look at the program and use it to its full potential. There are more benefits to include the Angus tag in your marketing program than there are not to. Angus breeders have worked hard for generations to develop a product that is known to consumers for its high quality. In order to maintain this reputation and drive profitability in the Angus breed, we need to ensure all Angus qualify for Angus programs and reduce the

Please remember that the fee schedule has changed, but Canadian Angus members can still register calves under 4 months of age for $15. This pricing is in line with the other major beef breeds in Canada. For herds that are willing and able to submit their spring 2011 calf registrations electronically using our online registry system or using HerdMaster, an on-farm software
program that is compatible with our registry, members have until July 15, 2011 to submit calf registrations for spring 2011-born animals at a special electronic discount rate of $15 per calf. The data that we receive electronically is efficient for the Canadian Angus Association to process, and that is the reason why a discount can be offered. Over the years, the popularity of electronic submissions has increased. These past few months I have been able to travel to Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec to meet with Canadian Angus breeders and commercial producers who wish to learn more about EPDs. The information sessions held in these regions included discussions on how EPDs are calculated and best used, how the Performance Program
can be improved to serve Canadian Angus Association members more effectively, and in Ontario and Quebec our guest speakers Paul Mastine and Phil Trowbridge also touched on successful ways to apply new technology and market our product. In addition, we have held several online workshops on EPDs and the paperwork involved in the Performance Program for Angus breeders across Canada. The online workshops are easy to access and go through the basics of how EPDs are calculated and how they may be used as a tool for genetic improvement toward more efficient operations. The Paperwork workshop goes through the worksheets that participants on the Performance Program complete and the reports that they receive back from the office. These workshops are now regularly scheduled for 9:00 am on the first Tuesday of every month. Contact me at kajal1@cdnangus.ca or 1-888-571-3580 to register for a workshop.
I would like to thank the Canadian Angus Association members and the commercial producers who travelled to attend any of the information seminars in Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. I would also like to thank the people in these areas who hosted me as I traveled and helped me organize these events. It was a truly great opportunity for me to meet so many breeders in these areas and for me to see how things are done in different regions. These information workshops are all free to take and I encourage all members to register for an online session or contact me about having a workshop in your area.

What is Genomics? The Canadian Angus Association is currently assessing the incorporation of genomic information into our EPDs for more accurate predictions of breeding value. Well, let’s start with what genomics does – it aims to limits the environment influences how the animal will traits, however, are governed by many genes, and this is understand the relationship between the properties an actually develop.
