Reports from across the country are very positive as far as the summer and early fall go. Hay and grain crops have been very fruitful with yields up over last year, in fact high than they have been in many years. Not to cast scorn to the grain farmers of this great country, but the higher yields may result in a slight price moderation of cereal grains. If that event were to happen it would certainly be a positive for cattle feeders which in turn would raise the price they could pay for feeder calves this fall All those involved in the
is time of year breeders are having to make decisions regarding their calf crop. All indications are that the demand for Angus genetics will continue to be strong.ere is no question in my mind that Angus breeders will put the same or more bull calves in the sale pen this year. As always there should be the reminder to not over populate that pen by digging deeper into the more marginal bulls. ere are a number of dispersal sales this fall and early winter which is an excellent opportunity to add new and different bloodlines to your herd. In a sense, I guess that would be diversifying, albeit within the breed. Either way it is an opportunity to gain access to cattle that otherwise would not be offered for sale.
ere has been a bit of a changing of the guard across the country with regard to Provincial Presidents. I would like to thank all of them, old and new, for taking the time to submit news and updates from their respective provinces and regions. It is a great means of keeping everyone up to date on the happens across the country. ank you to them! Look forward to seeing you down the road.

Learn, grow, enjoy. That was the simple mission statement developed nearly four years ago by five Lethbridge-area feedlot owners who decided to cooperate for mutual gain. The Allied Marketing Group (AMG), made up of Ryan Kasko, Les Wall, Ed Stronks, Leighton Kolk and Shawn Murray, was established in early 2010. This fall they took another step forward and became the first Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand Feeding Partner in Canada. “We started by taking educational trips together and sharing information about our operations,” said Kasko. “That evolved into having meetings as an advisory group and now benchmarking performance.”
Page 10
Angus World
Collectively, the group manages 11 feed yards with a one-time capacity of more than 110,000 head. Their new partnership with CAB will help them to better work with producers to deliver premiums and translate the value of carcass data. “We’re really excited about their focus on quality, interest in Angus genetics and the kind of feeding programs they have,” said Larry Corah, vice president of supply development for CAB. With a seventh consecutive record sales year worldwide and a strong growth year for CAB in Canada, the timing of this feedlot partnership is optimal, Corah said: “One of the things we want to do is create a linkage between CAB and the feedlot industry in Canada.”
Fall Edition 2013
That’s the model that jump-started production (supply development) of high-quality Angus beef in the U.S., he added. “Fifteen years ago, we looked at how to channel high-quality Angus-sired calves from the ranch to the packing house. They all have to go through the feedlot phase, so that’s when we started working more closely with that segment.” AMG joins scores of CAB feeding partners in the U.S., and group members see the new relationship as an opportunity to improve carcass quality at the feedlot and producer level.
Ryan Kasko
Aiming for Quality, Profit It’s easy for Angus producers, whether commercial ranchers or registered breeders, to get involved with the latest outreach by the Certified Angus Beef ® brand in Canada, said CAB vice president Larry Corah. The 35-year-old brand that began processing cattle in Canada with licensed packers 14 years ago is non-profit, producer owned and entirely market driven. Those economic forces are fuelled by consumer demand to generate seven consecutive years of record annual sales—now exceeding 850 million pounds—and paying producers $30 million per year in grid premiums. “The simplest way to get on board with CAB is to work with a feeding partner who aims for this premium target and wants to develop relationships with ranchers,” Corah said. Across the U.S., several seedstock producers have helped organize their customers in marketing alliances where everyone learns about their cattle, works to improve them and earns market rewards for those efforts, he explained. “That strategy would work well in Canada as well,” Corah said. The first CAB Feeding Partner in the country is the Allied Marketing Group (AMG) of feedlots in southern Alberta, he noted. Their lead contact is Ryan Kasko, Coaldale, AB, 403-345-4301; ryan@kaskocattle.com. More information on the CAB program is available at CABpartners.com.
“We want to be able to make those links with the ranchers, the producers,” Kasko said. “I think being the first one gives us that advantage to make some stronger connections. We have a lot to offer as feedlots to those producers.” AMG members developed a value-based marketing relationship with the largest packer in Canada, also CAB licensed. “Cargill wanted high-quality cattle,” Kasko said. “We thought there might be opportunities to work with CAB, to be introduced to producers of Angus cattle and help us analyze the data we have on our cattle.” Bruce Mitschke, the group’s facilitator and local beef production professional adds, “One of the reasons for a grid partnership is to look at feeding more high-quality cattle. And that fits right in with CAB.” Kasko said, along with using common veterinarians and nutritionists, the group hired a professional to lead animal welfare training for their staffs. “I think that shows the value of working together. We probably couldn’t justify doing that on our own, but we can as a group so it’s helping make all of our operations better.” “CAB tells the story and I think as a group we want to be part “We’ve pooled between us some of our expertise, experiences, of that story,” Wall said. successes and failures,” Kolk said. “That’s one of the real positives. Similar operations, goals and integrity have allowed AMG to We can maintain our individual ownership but still benefit from become successful both as a group and in their individual sharing information.” operations. AMG recently set up a database to track and quantify individual “We’re all family operations and we all live on the feedlots we animal and pen performance. It automatically updates feedlot run,” Stronks said. “It shows you how committed we are to what data daily and Cargill data when available. we do and how we do things. We live and breathe this every day.” “I think that resource is going to help us give the information That’s a connection that resonates with consumers who buy back to the producer,” Murray said. “We can get the kill data back the CAB brand, whether at retail or off the menu. for individual carcasses. That fits for the producer and it fits for us.” Story and photos by AMG members hope to improve efficiency on the individual Rosie Templeton lots by gaining insight on when cattle should be marketed. They will focus on improving returns without increasing costs, Kolk said. Leighton Kolk “It’s a three-way partnership between the feeder, the cow-calf producer and CAB as a marketing organization,” said Mitschke. Kolk recalls a question he fielded on a panel at a recent agricultural conference: What is one thing you wish you could do differently as a cattle feeder? The answer was all about focus: “We had no connection with our consumer,” he realized. CAB’s relationship with retail and restaurant licensees across Canada can help feedlots and groups like AMG gain a better understanding of consumer wants and needs, Kasko said. Fall Edition 2013

Manitoba Gold Show
Manitoba Angus Association hosts another successful Field Day & Gold Show On Saturday July 27th under sunny skies and moderate temperatures, over 80 head of cattle along with exhibitors and spectators gathered together for the day. The format was a pen show, so that even exhibitors could enjoy a relaxing visit with fellow breeders and spectators alike, as well as try their hand at judging the groups of cattle that were brought into the ring. The Calcutta made it fun & interesting for everyone. It was a very high quality group of cattle which is a testament to the great purebred Angus cattle we have in Manitoba. The day ended with a supper sponsored by the Manitoba Angus Association. Thanks to all of the exhibitors who took the time to bring their cattle and to the spectators who attended and especially to the judges, Bruce Rosling, Richie Joynt and Wes Olynyk for taking the time out of their busy schedule to sort the cattle for us. - Lois McRae

WCABP updates Breeding Soundness Evaluations A number of articles have appeared recently in industry publications concerning updates to the Breeding Soundness Evaluation guidelines adopted by the Western Canadian Association of Bovine Practitioners (WCABP). These updates include some increases in suggested minimum and average scrotal circumference for Angus which now closely match the Breeding Bull Guidelines published in the Canadian Angus Association’s Member Handbook. Included on the WCABP forms is clarification regarding the "Decision Deferred" check box addressing expectations for young bulls: "About 45, 60 and 75% are expected to pass at 12, 13 and 14 months of age respectively. Testing at under 12 months of age is not recommended." The Information for Producers section on the revised evaluation reads: “In yearlings, scrotal circumference increases at about 1.5, 1.1, 0.8 and 0.4 cm from 11-12, 12-13, 13-14, 14-15 months of age, respectively.” Valuable information to keep in mind when scheduling tests or retests on younger yearling bulls. The WCABP website states scrotal circumference averages and minimums were updated after obtaining data from the years 2006 to 2011 from veterinary practitioners across Canada.

Fall Edition 2013
Of note: average Angus scrotal circumference increased from 33.3 to 34.6 cm at 365 days of age and from 37.2 to 38.6 cm for two-year-old bulls in the collected data.

Canadian Beef Breeds Council
Many purebred cattle producers don’t know that much about the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC), which is understandable given the fact that there has been more direct interaction with respective breed associations than with producers. CBBC was established in 1994 to act as a unified voice of the purebred cattle industry and promote Canadian purebred beef genetics domestically and internationally. Today, CBBC represents the interest of 18 purebred beef breed Associations as well as several of Canada’s top export companies and major exhibitions. The top priorities of CBBC are government and industry advocacy, market access for live cattle and genetics, and scientific advancement for the beef cattle industry. CBBC representatives have attended events around the
world promoting the integrity of Canadian genetics and why Canada is the best place in the world to do business. CBBC currently represents the interests of the purebred cattle industry at the Canadian Cattlemen Association (CCA), Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA), Beef Improvement Federation (BIF), Canadian Livestock Genetics Association (CLGA) and Canadian Animal Health Coalition meetings. We work closely with federal and provincial governments and are active in committee and round-table discussions. This advocacy is important for purebred producers for many reasons. Purebred producers are small in number, but as we all know, play a vital role in the beef cattle production system. The genetic base for Canada’s national herd starts with purebred cattle and that perspective needs to be heard or it is easily forgotten. In developing foreign markets for purebred cattle, CBBC does not work alone. It is a combined effort of breeders, exporters, livestock exhibitions (domestic and international), government officials, industry organizations and breed associations. As part of its government advocacy efforts, CBBC has historically been very successful in obtaining financial assistance that is used to support those
involved in creating more value for Canadian genetics. This is an ongoing effort that will continue for the foreseeable future. CBBC is actively working with Livestock Gentec (a division of the University of Alberta) on several initiatives that will ensure the beef cattle industry remains competitive from a scientific and technological perspective with other animal protein industries. This includes identifying key areas of research that are relevant to the purebred industry as well as assisting producers who wish to apply new technologies. Understanding and incorporating Genomic information into everyday management is both a challenge and an opportunity for the beef industry. If managed correctly, it will provide Canada and its producers, with a distinct competitive advantage. If you have questions or comments regarding the activities of CBBC, feel free to contact me at mlatimer@canadianbeefbreeds.com or by phone at 403-730-0350.

British Columbia Angus Association Message BC Angus Annual General Meeting was well attended with a nice talk from Brian Good from CAA. Elections were held with myself being elected as President and Tanya Belsham elected as Vice-President. I would like to welcome Tanya back to tghe Board of Directors of the BC Angus Association. In closing I would like to acknowledge Lance Savage, who is our Past President. Thank you Lance for your leadership, it will always be appreciated. Good luck to everyone this fall.
Hello from Beautiful British Columbia. It has been a wonderful year to date in BC , here are some of the highlights . . .
July brought about Showdown in Armstron and a very successful show. It was very well attended by Juniors from all across Canada. Allison Speller spearheaded a group of Juniors who put on a first class event. Augsut brought about the Gold Shows in the province. Smithers was the first with a strong showing of Angus cattle. The driving force in Smithers is Judy Meerdinkl, who put together a womderful show that was well attended with great cattle from top to bottom. September long weekend brought about the second Gold Show of the year in Armstrong. The BC Angus Association Annual General Meeting was held in conjunction with this show. Tanya Belsham is the Angus breed representative for the show and her along that committee did a fabulous job putting on a great show.
The Alberta Angus Association once again held their AGM in August during the Alberta Junior Angus Association show in Bashaw. What an excellent opportunity for us all to get together and at the same time have the privilege to preview our fine young Angus members showcasing their livestock and talents. We have an exciting year ahead of us in the Angus industry. The AGM brought forth some new and old faces to the board with many outstanding ideas to work with. Your board members are: Greg Pugh, Carol High, Mat Bolduc, Megan Bond, Carolyn Congdon, Cole Goad, Brody Gardner, Darlene Glessman, Trish Henderson,
Dave Hofstra, Kathy Matejka, Georgina Smith, Courtney Stamm, Jill Wildman, and myself. One of the highlights of the AGM is always the announcement of our hall of famers. This year recognizing Miller Wilson Angus, Ebon Hill Angus, and Trailview Angus, all outstanding breeders who’s dedication to the entire industry make them very deserving of the award. Also acknowledged that evening for their love and dedication to the Angus breed is Redrich Angus as the 2013 Purebred Breeder of the year, and Ken Cox as Honorary President. As I am writing this note the Alberta Angus Gold show results are being tallied. What an excellent showcase of the Angus genetics that our Alberta producers are promoting. On October 8 five very excited Alberta Junior Angus members will be joining 7 others from across Canada to compete in the junior competitions at the World Angus Form in New Zealand. The AAA if proud to support our 5 competitors and wish them all the best. The Southern Alberta Angus Club will hold their 26th Annual Chinook Classic female sale on Wednesday October 23rd at the Taber Agri-Plex. The Northern Club will host the Northern Reflect sale on November 23rd in Camrose. Both sales will offer for sale
outstanding Angus female genetics from across Alberta. Check these sales out either in person or on line for an opportunity to add some positive assets to your herd. This year at Farmfair International in Edmonton, November 6-10, we will host the Angus National Show. This is sure to be an exciting show as it has always been in the past. Look for the AJAA booth displaying their donation heifer from Leonard & Tammy Nay-Tufty. Purchase a ticket and not only do you have a chance to win an excellent heifer, but you make a positive investment in our youth. Looking forward to Wednesday December 11th with the grand opening of Angus Central. Be sure to mark your calendars and partake of these festivities. January 2014 is sure to lead us into an exciting new year in the beef industry and especially for the Angus breeders. The cattle market is positive, optimism is high, and the enthusiasm is overwhelming. Whether you are purebred or a commercial breeder the Angus genetics available are outstanding. As we go forward, this is a fantastic time for all of us to be involved in the industry that we all have a passion for. See you down the road. Doug Domolewski, President - Alberta Angus Association

Saskatchewan Angus Association Message
Hello from Saskatchewan Angus Association. After a slow start summer weather finally arrived in Saskatchewan in August, as did a couple of great Angus events. We started off the month with our Summer Gold and Junior Show at the Prince Albert Fair. There was a good turn-out with great quality through-out the show. Thanks to the exhibitors for taking the time to get ready for the summer show, and with the great cooperation in implementing the Angus RFID tags in calves and yearlings – 100% compliance! Down in the opposite corner of the province August 29 and 30 saw 200+ Angus enthusiasts gather in the
Moose Mountain area for the SAA and CRAPS tour. We visited six farms, enjoyed great hospitality and viewed a lot of great cattle – all in some of the hottest weather of the summer. Thanks to our hosts – Bridgeway Livestock, WRAZ Red Angus, Eastondale Angus, T Bar K Ranch, GBT Angus and Johnson Livestock as well as the breeders who brought cattle to display at the various farms. Thanks also goes out to all who took the time to come out for the tour, as well as the various sponsors. Agribition is coming up faster than usual this year with the early dates of November 11-16. We are planning our usual hospitality at the booth, so please stop around for a visit and make sure to stay after the show and enjoy our pizza party. We are looking forward to another great show and again thank the exhibitors for attending as well as the many sponsors and volunteers it takes to put on the show. There are some changes in the commercial barn that you also need to check out with their new ‘Yards’ display concept and with the Bull Pen Alley show moving to Saturday it should make for much better crowd participation. The SAA Annual meeting will once again be held in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Beef Industry
Conference in Saskatoon January 22-24 so mark your calendar and plan to attend. We will be holding elections for the board and are always looking for input from the membership. Don’t miss out on the new Breeder Directory that we are putting together for next spring. You can find the application on our web-site at www.saskatchewanangus.com or in our fall newsletter. The directory will be ready for the Canadian Angus Convention which is being held June 4-7 in Moose Jaw. We are excited to host the event and encourage members to mark their calendars now and plan to be there. More details will be available soon but we can tell you that Moose Jaw is a great little city to visit and the host hotel Temple Gardens Mineral Spa is highly rated with a mineral pool and full service spa. Until next time, I hope that harvest and your fall work goes well and that we’ll see you at the shows and sales. As always if you have any questions or comments for the Association please feel free to contact me, any of the directors or the SAA office. Respectfully submitted, Dale Easton President, Saskatchewan Angus Association
The fall harvest has sure dragged on here in Manitoba but for the most part I think things are starting to get wrapped up. In our part of the province the yields have been fantastic. The early indications are that the calf prices are going to be strong this fall and here’s hoping that they are. Our next event here is the Manitoba Livestock Expo in Brandon, Manitoba with our Angus show on Friday November 1, 2013. Following that on December 7, 2013 also in Brandon at the Keystone Center will be the 25th version of the Keystone Classic Red and Black Angus Sale. This sale is an excellent opportunity to
purchase Red or Black Angus Females to add to your program. With Showdown in Virden, Manitoba next year this will also be a chance to purchase a heifer calf for that great event next year here. Until next time. I hope everybody gets their crops in the bin and you receive top dollar for your calves this fall. See you down the road.

Greetings from Ontario. The fall show season is well under way with point show shows from each of the 5 regions in Ontario to declare a show bull and show female of the year at the annual meeting in the Ottawa
Valley region. The first of two gold shows was held September 15 at Brampton Fair, approximately 130 entries at the show. A jackpot sponsored by Vos Vegas Farms for the Champion Bull and Female was presented in memory of Ross Bailey. Kemp Bros of Blackstock, ON winning the $2,500 prize for champion bull Kemp Brothers All the Way 8A, Worth-Mor Cattle Co of Campbellford, ON winning the $2,500 for Champion Female WMC Shakura 4Y. Also at Brampton Fair the Ontario Juniors held their provincial show with 47 juniors exhibiting 56 animals. The juniors competed in conformation, showmanship, photography, graphic design and art with aggregates in junior, intermediate and senior categories. Congratulations to all organizers and exhibitors of both shows, it was a great display of Angus at Brampton Fair. The fall sale season is quickly approaching with many club sales and
This summer was historically productive for feed and lush pastures in Quebec. Everyone has put away ample feed and more, a welcome change in many areas that had drought conditions last year. I am writing this
at the beginning of October and it is 22 degrees today with more sunshine predicted. We have had intermittent showers, spaced perfectly with many days of sunshine to allow for the production of dry hay. The dew is heavy now so most of the hay I have seen in the past week is being wrapped. This is the first time in many years it has been possible to do a third cut. We had a Gold Show at Brome Fair on Labour day weekend, judged by Allan Hargrave, Ontario President (results are in the magazine) and are looking forward to our second Gold Show at Expo Boeuf. An Angus Bull was Supreme Champion at Brome Fair. Our show at Expo Boeuf will be judged by Kirk Stierwalt as he is attending to give a fitting and grooming demonstration to the juniors. I am sure that adults will be dropping in to pick up a few tips too. Our Female Sale was on September 28th and went very well. It was another sunny day and we served a
delicious lunch of Angus burgers. The sale has not been held for several years and it was time to revive it. Many Quebec members consigned some excellent cattle and we also had a group of F1 bred heifers as well as a herd of commercial cows bred to an Angus bull. Commercial producers began showing up 5 hours before the sale to get a look at the cattle. The parking lot was full of cattle trailers brought by committed buyers. The cattle sold well with the top seller going for $25,000 and the F1 heifers were all sold quickly with brisk bidding. Purebred cattle were purchased by several new Angus members as start-up herds. It was a very successful sale. Prices are up for all Angus cattle and with feed in ample supply, it will be a great winter!

Maritime Angus Association Message
Maritime Angus Association Greetings from the East Coast. From an unusually wet summer, the Maritimes have been enjoying some beautiful fall weather lately, which has been greatly needed to get the crops out, and get ready for winter. Along with the nice fall weather has been some very nice Angus shows throughout the Maritimes as well. The first Gold Show of the season was held in Charlottetown, PEI at Old Home Week on August 16 and 17. With approximately 60 head being shown
this year, the selection of Black and Red Angus cattle was awesome. Wayne Gallup (Canadian Angus Field man) and myself toured some New Brunswick and Nova Scotia commercial herds that use Angus genetics before heading to PEI, where we enjoyed some PEI hospitality and toured through some Island Angus herds as well. New Brunswick’s Gold Show was held in Sussex at Beef Expo on September 21 and 22. Approximately 50 head of Black and Red Angus were shown. The judge was John Dolliver from Stetler Alberta (formerly from the Maritimes). Nova Scotia’s Gold Show will be held again this year in Halifax at Maritime Fall Fair on October 11 and 12. There are always lots of great junior activities at this event. The 15th Annual “Angus in Action” sale will be held this fall in Nappan, NS on October 26, so if you are looking for a great 4-H prospect heifer, a bred yearling, or a nice cow-calf pair come on down to Nappan and have your pick of some of the best Angus genetics in the Maritimes. The sale catalogue can be viewed by visiting the “Maritime Angus Blog”.
On behalf of the Maritime Board of Directors and Maritime Angus breeders, I would like to express our thanks to Wayne Gallup (CAA Eastern Field man) for his many years of service. With his recent announcement of retirement from the Field man position. We have always enjoyed having him visit with commercial and purebred breeders alike throughout the Maritimes, his knowledge of Angus cattle and market information has been greatly appreciated. Your successor has some large shoes to fill. The Maritime Angus Assoc. Annual meeting will be tentatively held on December 1, 2013. Please try to attend, as this is your opportunity as members to voice any concerns or questions you may have. As always, make sure you tag your calves with Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Green Tags and remember to show your Angus pride with the use of these tags in your cattle. Trevor F. Welch President - Maritime Angus Association
Canadian Junior Angus Association
Winter is coming… but for now only fall is upon us and it’s the time of year we are geared for bringing in the lasts of our harvests and working on our cattle. I know here in Ontario the fair season is in full swing and I am happy to see that our breed is well represented everywhere I have been. There are also a few big events coming up for our breed and particularly some of our junior members. There are 12 young people gearing up and getting excited for their journey overseas. Canada has three teams entered in the World Angus Forum’s Youth Competition in New Zealand and as one of those lucky people I can say that we are ready for the challenge. Preparations have been underway as a group and individually for months and our young representatives are going to do their country proud down there. We want to extend gratitude from the members of Team Eh!, Team B² and Team Canucks for all the hard work
Cassie Dorran has put into organizing for us. Be sure to follow the teams’ activities on Facebook, Twitter and blogs which can be found through the Canadian Angus website. We are very pleased once again to have support from Angus breeders with a donation of a heifer that will be Dutch auctioned at The Masterpiece Sale during Agribition. We greatly appreciate the donation from Double C Red Angus of Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. Funds raised from the heifer will be allocated back to the Canadian Junior Angus Association Scholarship Fund. Once again the CJAA is printing a calendar for 2014 as a fundraiser. We have received great response from Angus enthusiasts all across the country in filling our advertising spaces. The CJAA is very appreciative of the support and sponsorship for the calendar from breeders and industry supporters from across Canada. Be sure to put your copy up and look to it for sale dates, show dates and a few friendly messages throughout the year – they will be out mid-November and all Canadian Angus members will be receiving a copy. The CJA board of directors has elections coming up again for four positions, one each in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec. Nominations are due to the CJAA office by January 31 and elections will be held by mail-in ballot in March with the new directors to start their two year terms at Showdown in July. Contact any current director or the CJAA office for more information – it is a great experience and looks awesome on your resume.
The CJAA Board is busy planning the 2014 GOAL Conference. It will be held in Calgary, AB from February 15 to 17. The GOAL Conference is a great opportunity to meet and network with other junior members outside of the show ring in a fun and friendly environment. This year we are encouraging past participants to ‘bring a friend’ – Juniors who bring a new participant to the 2014 Conference will be entered into a draw for an IPAD and the CJAA and the Canadian Angus Foundation (CAF) are offering travel bursaries to attend - check out the applications on our web-sites at www.juniors.cdnangus.ca or www.canangusfoundation.ca. These bursaries are a great opportunity and I hope that lots of juniors apply for them and whether they win or not, join us for this great event. The CAF also has some other exciting new programs that we are launching this year – all participants at GOAL will be entered into a draw to win a $3,000 voucher to purchase an animal! The $10,000 Foundation Legacy Scholarships judging and awards will take place at GOAL as well – check out the web-site or our newsletter for more information on all of these opportunities and keep watch for more announcements from the Foundation. Also do not forget that Showdown 2014 is coming to Virden, Manitoba from July 17 to 19.
