Environmentally Friendly? In our quest to be environmentally friendly and eating locally, are we missing the point. Eating locally grown food is touted as being the green thing to do. A closer look at it may reveal that isn’t always the case. e example I can across has to do with eggs. One dozen eggs that are transported several hundred miles to a grocery store in tractor trailer that can carry 23,400 dozen eggs is a more fuel efficient, eco-friendly option than a dozen eggs purchased at a farmer’s market where 4.5 times more fuel is used or a local farm where 17.2 times more fuel is used.

As the years roll by and the population continues to grow and increase the demand for meat, milk and eggs, it is important that the right message is being communicated to the public. e following passage from an article referring to American dairy industry by Dr. Jude Capper says it very well. “Intuitively, today’s modern production practices often seem to have a higher environmental impact than the "idyllic" management practices of the 1940s. Nonetheless, when assessed on a whole-system basis, greenhouse gas emissions per gallon of milk produced are 63 percent lower. In 2007, the U.S. dairy industry produced 8.3 billion more gallons of milk than in 1944, but due to improved productivity, the carbon footprint of the entire dairy farm industry was reduced by 41 percent during the same time period.”

"Consumers might think they are making the responsible, virtuous food choices, when, in truth, they are supporting production practices that consume more natural resources, cause greater pollution and create a larger carbon foot print than more efficient, technology-driven, conventional methods," she concludes. I would suggest that we in the agriculture industry need to convey to the general public their decisions and choices should be made on sound science. It begs the questions - How do we send the right message? and Who is responsible to get the message out?

Beef InfoXchange System (BIXS) BIXS Overview For several years now beef producers across Canada have identified the potential in capturing, exchanging and tracking specific individual animal data and information thanks to the unique individual animal electronic ID tags regulated in all beef cattle leaving the herd of origin. As part of the Canadian Beef Advantage (CBA) program, the branding of Canadian beef for domestic and international markets, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association spearheaded the development of the Beef InfoXchange System or BIXS. This system will fulfil the need to improve communications and individual animal information sharing across the entire beef chain. While still in the developmental stage, through the late summer and early fall of 2009 BIXS will roll its first component out to cow-calf and feedlot producers across the country in a test phase. BIXS is a national voluntary web-based database designed to capture and exchange data linked to the individual animal’s unique electronic ID tag number known as the CCIA tag. It is a no-charge program to assist in gathering and tracking useful animal and carcass information as determined by the owner of the information. BIXS is a tool for cow-calf, feedlot and processor beef chain participants to track animal production, performance, health, genetic, economic and carcass data, and much more, across the beef chain – all on an individual animal basis. BIXS is built upon the edict if you can measure it, capture and exchange the information and act upon the information, tremendous opportunity for improvements come along. BIXS offers the means by which participants can communicate one-to-one and build business relationships based upon accurate reliable individual animal data. This will enable improved efficiencies at the ranch and feedlot levels, more precise targeting of beef for specific domestic and international market prospects and increase the overall quality of beef nation-wide. Producers register and log onto the BIXS database program via the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association website or through links provided on websites of those organizations partnering with BIXS. The system will be designed to work efficiently at high speed and dial-up connective speeds. BIXS will also platform or partner on an information sharing basis with many other industry participants including veterinary pharmaceutical firms, veterinarians, IT firms and more. As these agreements are completed BIXS will provide links to these partners on the BIXS main web site. Win-Win of Searching BIXS Maintaining producer participant confidentiality is paramount to BIXS and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA). To Page 10

Fall Edition 2009**

empower BIXS to become an effective tool for beef chain participants to seek out supply on specification and bolster communications and foster one-on-one business relationships across the beef chain, BIXS must possess a searching function. In short, this means packers, feedlots and buyers who become participants in good standing of the BIXS program can use the system to seek out supply of cattle and build relationship with suppliers of those cattle based on spec. Cow-calf BIXS participant confidentiality is maintained through the search function. Cow-calf producers ultimately decide whether they wish to connect with searching participants. All BIXS participants wishing to launch a search must adhere to the terms and conditions for searching the BIXS database. Here’s how it works: Lets say a BIXS member feedlot, buyer or packer is looking for Angus-cross cattle born no earlier than March 2nd and no later than April 16th that have been vaccinated with a specific product or products. The BIXS member feedlot, buyer or packer must provide this query or search parameter to the BIXS program administrator along with their complete contact information. The program administrator analyzes the database according to the search parameters. BIXS cow-calf participant members with cattle in their inventory matching the search specs are then supplied the contact information of that BIXS member feedlot, buyer or packer. It is then up to the sole discretion of the BIXS cow-calf member participant to contact the searcher and begin building a business relationship. Those launching a search of the BIXS database will not be supplied contact information of any cow-calf producer nor will the searcher be informed of the outcome of the program administrator’s analyses of the database regarding the search parameters. In this way the BIXS maintains producer confidentiality yet empowers the system to act as a business tool for users. At the onset BIXS will enable searches based on the following parameters: * Animal birthdates/date ranges * Breed/crossbreed * Castration date/method * Weaning weight/weight range * Vaccination date(s) / product(s) * Immunization program * VBP registered and audited operations Benefits Everyone can access information The ability for anyone on the CBA program to access information along the value chain and to capitalize on the advantages listed above will depend on the adoption of the industry's value proposition. Producer Benefits Defining production practices contributes to Angus World

increasing the overall value of Canadian beef, creating a standard of excellence recognized by industry and consumers. Individual producer production practices will contribute to increasing the overall value of Canadian beef on all levels - domestic, national and international. Packing & Processor Benefits Packing plants will be able to promote the beef from animals on the program as age-verified, fully traceable back to the herd of origin and as having health records. * Results in higher carcass values over time, as demand for beef from cattle on the CBA program increases domestically and internationally. Retailer Benefits The benefit to retailers, over time results in higher carcass values as consumer demand for beef from cattle on the CBA program increases domestically and internationally. * Offering the strong Canadian brand increases consumer demand as customers come to expect and receive specified qualities and service will be the end result. National Coordinator Larry Thomas works with packers, feedlots, cowcalf producers and purebred breeders to facilitate the information exchange across Canada. He promotes the production programs associated with the CBA, such as age verification and the Verified Beef Production Program, and provides leadership and coordination for the information sharing system the CCA is developing. Requirements to Participate BIXS is a free program, there is no charge to register, enter or retrieve individual animal data. There is, however, a minimal amount of required information needed to fulfil the needs of a robust beef chain database. BIXS participants must agree to specific terms and conditions for BIXS participation. In addition to the small amount of required data users must enter there is a long list of optional production, performance, health and other data they can choose to enter. Adding optional data to the system can capitalize on the search capabilities of BIXS to help create business relationships across the beef chain within BIXS based on an individual animal basis. Including optional data/information can also act to ‘showcase’ your operation and cattle to feedlots, buyers and packers and, in time, to retailers and further processors. Requirements of Cow/Calf Producers Cow-calf producers wanting to participate in BIXS must provide the following data: CLTS premise ID; individual animal CCIA tag numbers; animal birthdates either as actual individual animal birthdates or a calving start date; and, whether the farm is a Verified Beef Production operation. All other production, performance and health data/information cow-calf producer participants choose to enter is strictly optional. Continued on next page . . .

World Angus Forum

The job is not finished until the paperwork is done In the post World Angus Forum 2009 Commemorative Issue of Angus World I stated that report would be my final

one. But as they say, “The job is not finished until the paperwork is done.” Well, we have now completed that paperwork and a final wrap up and financial report was presented to the Canadian Angus Association Board of Directors at the October Board meetings. The WAF committees have now completed their task and I feel that is it is important that we communicate the results to the CAA membership. I’m very pleased to be able to report a better than budgeted and very positive financial outcome. The investment by the CAA was well managed by all WAF committees and your association. Once grant monies are received I am confident we will not have used all of the CAA allotted funds. The Canadian 2009 WAF was a great success in many ways and it certainly was a challenge to have the finances end in a strong position as the scope of the project and

number of participants grew beyond expectations. The commitment made by the CAA is an investment that will impact our industry in a most positive way for years to come. This journey has been an experience. I believe it is worth noting and I’m gratified that ALL Organizing Committee members who started six years ago remained and completed their commitments (including Keith Kaufmann who was missed being listed in the post WAF Commemorative Issue; sorry Keith!). The same holds true for OC members added as well as Sub Committee Chairs and Coordinators. It was not always easy, but these volunteers and fellow breeders did not waiver, Thank you to all and I hope we made the members of the CAA proud to have hosted the 2009 World Angus Forum in Canada. John Lee, Chairman WAF 2009 Organizing Committee

Requirements of Feedlot/Backgrounders Finishing and backgrounding feedlots wanting to participate in BIXS must provide the following data: CLTS premise ID; individual animal CCIA tag numbers; date of animal’s move in to feedlot; weight in pounds of individual animal at move in to feedlot; date at individual animal move out of feedlot; and, whether the feedlot is a Verified Beef Production operation. All other production, performance, health data/information feedlot participants choose to enter is strictly optional. Requirements of Packer/Processors Packer/processors wanting to participate in BIXS must provide the following data/information: CLTS premise ID; individual animal CCIA tag number, animal’s slaughter date; individual animal hot carcass weight, and carcass yield, quality and fat grade data. All other carcass data packer/processor participants choose to enter is strictly optional but can include yield percentage, ribeye area and other electronic grading data. Requirements of Auction Markets In time auction marts will be able to participate in BIXS. Participation is strictly optional but if markets choose to enrol in BIXS they can choose to enter individual animal data at a move-in date, move-out date or both. If markets opt to participate they must provide the individual animal CCIA tag number; animal’s move-in or move-out date and sender CLTS premise ID. BIXS will enable third party

authorization whereby third party entities like auction marts and IT firms among others can enter data/information on behalf of their customers who have granted the authorization. September 14, 2009 BIXS moves to ‘soft launch’ phase with cow-calf producers Working with a group of about 100 dedicated and supportive cow-calf producers and platform partners across Canada the BIXS program has moved to the ‘soft launch’ phase of development. For the next few weeks these cow-calf producers will help test out the registration and animal data upload and transfer process. The aim is to identify and work out any fundamental glitches prior to going to a full launch to cow-calf and feedlot producers this coming fall. “It is critical to the success of BIXS to make this program and process as simple and user-friendly as possible from the start,” says Larry Thomas, national coordinator of the Canadian Beef Advantage and BIXS programs. “At the same time we must assure the data and information power of the BIXS is maintained, which is an interesting balancing act. Our cooperating cow-calf producers will help us hone the program to attain the correct balance prior to moving to full launch.” Feedlots set to join BIXS this fall should collect and store required data now BIXS is in the cow-calf testing phase at present and will go to full launch to cow-calf and feedlot operators

across Canada this fall. While there is no fee to participate in BIXS there is a minimal amount of required information participants must submit. For feedlots, this required information includes their CLTS Premise ID; the date cattle enter the feedlot, the weight of the cattle as they enter the feedlot and the CCIA tag number of those individual animals. Through the initial and on-going test phase and early launch period of BIXS cattle from cow-calf operations that have yet to join BIXS will be gone from the farm or ranch through the fall run. These cow-calf producers will join BIXS and enter their required and optional data as the program gets up to full speed through the fall and early winter. Obviously, not all cattle coming to feedlots will, ultimately, be BIXS program animals. But chances are a good number will be and if the required information upon feedlot entry is not collected a step in the process is missed. This will not be a concern later as BIXS evolves and participation across the beef chain builds, but for now it is a reality of starting a new program. With this in mind it is strongly urged that feedlots record the CCIA tag numbers of all cattle entering their feedlots this fall/winter and link the CCIA tag identifier to the In-Date (DD/MM/YYYY) and InWeight (in pounds) of the cattle. Store that information for future upload to the BIXS database once the program is fully launched and your feedlot operation is registered onto BIXS this coming fall. South View Ranch - Breeder of the Year

South View Ranch is located southwest of Ceylon amid the rolling hills of south-central Saskatchewan; 80 miles south of Regina and 30 miles north of the US border, the Port of Regway. Charles Kaufmann and Elaine Fettes were married in 1949 at which time they rented South View Farm. It consisted of six quarters of land; four cultivated and two native prairie. They purchased the farm in 1953 and ran 25 head of commercial cattle derived from offspring of the Brown Swiss milk cows, crossbred to Shorthorn and Horned Hereford. In the late 50's Black Angus bulls were used. The black baldy cows were exceptional females for the environment, better known as ‘short grass’ country. On this small mixed farm Charlie and Elaine raised four children; daughter Ryan born in 1951, son Keith in 1953, daughter Margo in 1955 and daughter Trudy in 1957. They were a very busy family involved with the day to day operations of running the farm. Tragedy struck in 1971 when Charlie passed away suddenly in April at the age of 43. Keith was finishing his Grade 12 at the time, so with the help of relatives, neighbours and friends the cows were calved and the crop was seeded. The previous fall Charlie had started building a 60 head hog barn, so Keith put his plans of welding and mechanics at Tech School aside, grabbed the reins so to speak and picked up where his Dad left off. The barn was finished, 60 sows were farrowed with piglets sold as weanlings. Keith married Linda Beres in 1973 and together they worked to make the farm a viable operation.

Keith and Linda were blessed with two children; Shane in 1978 and Stacey in 1980. After graduating Shane's interest and love of cattle and ranch life kept him involved at South View. In 1999 he married Alexis Muxlow and they have four children; Keaton 7, Kamrie 4, Kohen 2, and Korbyn 4 months. The future of South View Ranch looks very bright with the 4th generation already becoming involved. Stacey lives and works in Weyburn, but comes out to help at the ranch whenever needed. In 1975 the McGrath Ranch, which bordered their pasture, came up for sale. The McGrath brothers thought it was too large for one person so Keith and his cousin Garth purchased it together. They ran 250 commercial cows on this 5000 acre spread. The hog operation was sold and the barn used for calving. With the inflation of the 70's it looked as though they had made all the right decisions. With the 80's came drought, grasshoppers and high interest rates. Cousin Garth wanted out of the partnership so Keith and Linda purchased his half of the ranch in 1985. Angus was definitely the breed of choice so in 1990 South View Ranch's purebred operation began with the purchase of 10 Red Angus females. Keith purchased eight cows that originated from breeders Glen Salkeld and Louise Todd. Shane, who was 12 years old at the time and a 4-H member, bought two heifer calves from Circle R Red Angus, one of which was his 4-H project. This began their Red division. A few years later Shane initiated the idea to implement Black Angus into the business and with the purchase of 20 Black females from Brost Cattle Co. the Black division was born. Almost 20 years later they are breeding around 250 Red and 150 Black females. Prominent cow families such as the Jinny's, Christy's, Fancy Lady's, Forever Lady's and Ruby's have contributed to the strength of the cowherd. Just as important is bull selection. Great herdsires such as Red South View No Equal 28H, Red Geis

Angus World

Hi Ho 180'04, Red SVR Knight 73P, Northline Tuff 619H, Crescent Creek 235 Trav 65R to name a few, have also played a large part in developing the herd to where it is today. The challenge is ongoing to breed the next great one or to find that one which will take their purebred business to the next level. For exposure of the quality of cattle they raise to the rest of the world they participate in a few cattle shows each fall, the most important one being Canadian Western Agribition. Over the years they have had many winners, but the greatest satisfaction is definitely felt when a customer does well with their SVR genetics. The Kaufmann's host their own bull sale at the ranch each April offering close to 100 Red and Black Angus bulls. April 15, 2010 will mark their 10th Annual Sale. Select females have been offered through some of the breed's top sales such as Red Round-up, Masterpiece, Angus Pride, and Grasslands. Of course, they prefer private treaty sales that come with a visit and tour! South View Ranch genetics have been sold to United States, Russia, Uruguay, Hungary, Brazil and Mexico. Involvement in their community and the Angus industry also keeps the Kaufmann family very busy. Keith was a Saskatchewan Angus Association Director from 1998 to 2009 as well as a Director on the Canadian Angus Association Board from 2002 to 2005 and from 2006 to 2009. He served as the Angus representative to the Saskatchewan Stock Grower’s Association for a number of years as well. Keith has been a councillor and now Reeve for the RM of the Gap #39 from 1980 to present day. Both Keith and Shane have been active on numerous local committees such as the Lions Club, Park Board, Rec Board, Vet Board and ADD Board. In 2000 Keith initiated the idea of a feedlot in their region. Five years later Border Line Feeders Inc. became a reality just south of Ceylon. Keith is President of this successful 12,000 head lot with approval to expand to 20,000 head in the near future. Congratulations to the Kaufmann’s on being awarded Saskatchewan Angus Breeder of the Year!

Alberta Angus Association Message

Darrin Hipkin Fall is upon us and we are in the full swing as the Commercial Committee is working hard with our Angus Steak Dinners at different auction markets in Central Alberta. This provides Angus Breeders with a great opportunity to thank the commercial breeders & cattle buyers, for using Angus genetics. The first one was held in Provost and there was a tremendous turn out, cooking over 160 steaks. This is the 2nd year at the Provost Auction Mart and with the great response, we are sure to be out there again next year. I would like to thank all the breeders that have sponsored this event and have taken the time to go to these 5 different Auction Marts; to help cook and meet the Commercial breeders and just to say thank you for using Angus genetics. The Commercial Committee is lead by Doug Reed and Bill Dietrich and together with their committee has put a lot of hard work and valuable time to accomplish this program. If you would like to help out, sponsor this event or for more

information, please contact the Alberta Angus Association at 1-888-556-9057 or office@albertaangus.ca. Autumn Angus Legacy Weekend I would like to thank the whole board of the AAA, as everyone was in attendance to help out in one way or another to have a very successful show. With over 100 head in the Gold Show, I think we can be proud that we had a great turn out; making the Autumn Angus Legacy Weekend the 3rd largest Gold Show in the country. The Autumn Legacy was developed to have a fun family weekend with our fellow breeders and be able to be proud of our breeding programs and have an avenue to show case them. The strong sense of “Angus” community was very evident from Friday night, when the Poker tournament started to Saturday’s events of golfing and then an evening with a wonderful dinner shared fellowship among friends. The camaraderie is truly what makes this event what it is. As well we would like to give a big Thank You to Scott Stock Farm for their donation of either a Black or Red Angus calf as the donation heifer and what a pair that they brought for the lucky winner to choose. Congratulations to BarE-L on the winning of the donation calf. This show would not happen and run as well as what it does without our fantastic sponsors and all the volunteers that help out. Sponsorship We have taken on a new Sponsorship Level “One-Stop-Shop” for Angus Breeders so that we can have every one involved in the many different activities that are within association. We want to bring more value back to our sponsors that help support the different events and with this new level of sponsorship we believe it does just that. For more information, as it is very

necessity of survival. One of the noticable expenditures is delivery of animals across the country. All too often, cattlemen are seen on the highway with half a load, or worse still, an empty back haul. Out of a brainstorming session with cattleman, came an idea to raise efficiency with no cost to producers - cowpool.ca. Cattlemen are invited to go on the site and enter information and read what is already there. It is hoped it will encourage efficiency and help everyone save a few dollars. "During the busy bull sale season, I always get calls from producers wondering if I know of anyone hauling cattle one direction or another. We try to help guys get their loads together instead of everyone making individual trips, but you always hear of someone who just made the trip and could have taken a few more head. We thought by putting it on the

net, we would be able to broaden the scope for longer hauls and access a larger pool of producers. I usually know what is happening in a few breeds, but if all breeds participate, the benefits will multiply," says Helge By, co-owner of By Livestock, the company behind the idea. "It just seemed a natural extension of the services we provide. We're always looking for ways to help." Within two days of launching the site, there was a cowpool posting. The site has only been up for five days, but this is encouraging. Many female sales will still have the opportunity to use the site this fall, but it is expected to be busiest in bull sale season. Lance Savage Hi Everyone, Fall is here, the nights are getting colder, and the mountains are starting to show snow on them. We had the Thanksgiving Female Sale in

October, and I think it went over quite well. We had some very nice animals in the sale, and a lot of people were in attendance. Thank you to Don and Peter Raffan for hosting a beef on a bun lunch, and to Diana Raffan for the wine and cheese. We also had the BC Angus Annual meeting. Thank you to Doug Fee for coming out for that. We had a good meeting, with Doug filling us in on genetic defects, and of course telling us about the positive things in the Angus industry. Thank you to Monty and Tanya Belsham, Poplar Meadows for donating a beautiful heifer calf for our fundraising auction. Brett White from Northern Black Angus was the lucky winner! The board of directors for the upcoming year are Lance Savage as President, Trevor White as Vice President, Jim Moon, Tanya Belsham, Lorraine Sanford, Diane Fletcher, Lynn Jackson and Donna Mills. Frank Strimbold is the Canadian Director, and Jack Brown is Field man. Pam Rasmussen has

stepped down as the treasurer so that she can spend more time with her family. The Association cannot thank Pam enough for the countless hours that she has put in. Thank you Pam. Taking over Pam’s job in addition to continuing the secretary’s job is, of course my much better half, Jill Savage. Jack Brown has just returned home from a ten day, 2000 km trip attending all of the Angus influence sales. He was also presenting a jacket to one of the Angus calf producers at each sale. There were jackets given in Dawson Creek, Vanderhoof, Williams Lake, Kamloops, Armstrong and Okanagan Falls. The next meeting for the board will be November 14, 2009 at Williams Lake. If anyone has something they would like brought up please contact one of directors, or call the BC Angus office at 250-546-2813. Lance Savage President, B.C. Angus Association

Clark Ward As I write this the Saskatchewan crop is only 70% combined. Many producers are going to have cheaper feed. Most are looking for higher calf

prices, but may not see it. Saskatoon has had calves moving fairly steady. Some customers of ours have sold steers at 1.05 in that 700 lb range. Here’s hoping that holds. With the fall run on, the Green Tag Angus sales have started. The Saskatchewan Board will again try to have directors present at sales to talk to producers. Our board feels it is a good way to get to talk with commercial cattleman and answer any questions they may have. With Fall Show and Sales just ahead plans are well under way for the National Show. Agribition is always the wind up to the show season and this one looks like it will be strong. I believe entries are steady with last year and you know quality is always top notch. The Masterpiece sale is a highlight and will again lead off the Angus events in Regina. Plan to be there, you won’t want to miss it. Having said all that there is Saskatoon, Yorkton and Lloydminster as well. The smaller regional

shows are always well attended and producers will want to check them out. The Saskatchewan Angus Annual General Meeting is coming up in January in Saskatoon. This is your opportunity to voice your concerns and run for the Angus Board. The conventions of the Saskatchewan Livestock and Saskatchewan Cattle Feeders Association have been combined and the new Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association is joining in what has been named the Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference, January 20 – 23, 2010 at the Saskatoon Inn. There will be many interesting and informative speakers and presentations along with the meetings. Please plan to attend. Well, I’ll see you at the Fall Shows and Sales. Hello all. I has been a busy fall so far and that is probably a good thing as it keeps everyone's minds off of the very wet weather and slumping beef prices! Angus shows in Charlottetown, Sussex and Halifax were strong with numbers larger than in the past few years. We were pleased to have Norman Little from Ireland as the beef judge for the Maritime Fall Fair in Halifax. He and his wife Joy stayed for a week and toured the area. Some of you might remember them from the World Angus Secretariat held in Ireland in 2007. The annual Angus in Action sale was held Oct 17 in Nappan, N.S. The quality was very good and Angus World

overall consignors were happy with prices considering the current market conditions. A first for our region took place in October as a feeder sale in Sussex was broadcast on Liveauctions.tv. Angus calves sold in this sale but results were not known at time of writing. In closing I wish good luck to all the 4-H members from the maritimes exhibiting Angus heifers in the junior show at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto and look forward to seeing all maritime members at our annual meeting scheduled for January 10, 2010. Quebec Angus Association Message

Stan Christensen As winter approaches our commercial bull customers are selling their calves into a very

challenging market here in Quebec. The good news coming from Angus calf sales indicates that good angus cross calves are selling at or near the top of the prices even here, perhaps due in part to the interest in the Angus Rancher Endorsed program. We do need to publicize these top selling lots so that there is real evidence available and we would be able to quickly move toward an “Angus “ tag requirement as there are very few tags on calves at the present time. Recently, one of our Quebec Angus board members, Martin Bernier dispersed his herd so he will be missed at our meetings as well as at other events. The dispersal of the JD Farm herd ends many years of their involvement in Quebec Angus and will leave some big shoes to fill for everyone showing cattle here. Thank you John and Donna. Stan Christensen President Quebec Angus

CAA - President’s Message

John Donaldson In September I dispersed my cows and I thank the many supporters that attended the sale. I was pleased to see the cows go to some great breeders across the country as well as many new members in Quebec. Thank you also to Barry Stewart. Kendall Goodrich and Tom Flanagan for purchasing the semen lots that raised $6,450 for the Canadian Angus Foundation. In October I attended Expo Boeuf in Quebec and was pleased to see Angus breeders from Quebec, Ontario and even as far as Alberta. The exhibitors did not use any aerosols and the cattle looked as good as Angus cattle always look . Bob Switzer did a great job judging and I thank him for coming to Quebec again. On my way to the October Board Meeting I went to

Red Roundup and I would like to thank Brian MacKenzie and all the members in attendance for giving me such a warm welcome. The enthusiasm of the breeders was apparent in their successful sale. Congratulations! At the Board meeting the Directors formed four committees so that we can better serve the members. The committees are Finance (chair Roger Hardy), Breed Development (chair David Bolduc), Commercial (chair Bob Switzer) and Advertising/Promotion (Lois McRae). These committees are working on specific projects and they welcome any suggestions or ideas that you may have as these committees are in place so that the members can be directly involved in their Association. The committees will be reviewing all the discussions and suggestions from the Can-Prov meeting at the Annual General Meeting s as well as the round table discussions at the AGM. The future of the CAA is very important to the Directors and they gladly donate their time for the betterment of the breed and the Association so let them know your ideas and concerns. The Resolution on the table at the AGM regarding the Board decisions being posted in a timely manner on the Canadian Angus website was unanimously passed by the Board. I would like to thank the Commercial Fieldmen for all their work promoting the Breed. I attended some events

and sales with Brian Good and I think that he knows every cattleman in Canada and many in the USA. He is the face of Angus to the commercial breeders and his attendance at feeder sales and auctions is invaluable. I was glad to hear that Ken Cox and John Duivendvoorden are feeling better and once again back on the road. Blair McRae does an excellent job throughout Manitoba . Wayne Gallup has done an outstanding job in Quebec and the Maritimes and he projects his enthusiasm for the breed at every sale and event he attends. These men, especially Brian, spend many days on the road away from their families for the promotion of the breed resulting in the success of the members and I appreciate all their efforts. Part of the success of Angus in Canada in 2009 was a result of the hard work of John Lee and the World Angus Forum committee organizing the most successful event of the year (maybe the century!) and I thank them again for the excellent outcome. This Fall I will be travelling to Farmfair, the Royal and Agribition and I look forward to meeting members and renewing old friendships. I wish you all a Happy Holiday and a great 2010. Canadian Junior Angus Association

Quinn Hamilton Hello Angus breeders! Here is what’s happening with the Canadian juniors. The 5th annual GOAL (Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders) conference will be held in Saskatoon Saskatchewan February 19-21, 2010. The change of

location, along with everything planned should make for an exciting weekend. The theme for the weekend will be “Taking the Next Step”; speakers, tours and fun are being planned. We will be touring the DNA Lab, the Vet College as well as the Canadian Light Source. Also a fun-filled evening at Champlain Farm, St. Denis, Saskatchewan is in the works. The deadline for registration is January 10th, 2010. Look for the registration form in this issue of the magazine and I look forward to seeing you in February! This year our donation heifer will be coming from Ivanhoe Angus of Saskatchewan. The heifer will be selling by Dutch auction at the Masterpiece Sale in Regina November 25th but this year we will be auctionning a “pick of the heifer calf crop”. The CJAA appreciates all the support that Angus breeders have given us and we would like to thank everyone who has

contributed to our donation heifer program which funds our scholarships. The CJAA has four board positions that will be up for election. There will be openings in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec. The director positions are 2-year terms that would take effect July 2010 at Showdown. Nominations must be submitted to Belinda Wagner by January 31st, 2010. Serving on the board of the Canadian Junior Angus Association is an opportunity for developing skills and friendships that will be helpful to you in the future, as well as your chance to work at building our junior programs to benefit the membership and the breed. Contact a current director for more information, or call the CJAA office if you are interested in running for the board. Quinn Hamilton ~ CJAA President

Canadian Angus Association - CEO Message

C A N A D I A N A N G U S A S S O C I A T I O N

Doug Fee

Our World Angus Forum is without a doubt going to be the highlight of our Angus year. The Association did invest some money into it and a lot of volunteers, committee members and breeders invested considerable time and energy. There is no doubt that our investment was worth it. We exhibited an impressive group of cattle and can identify significant sales of genetics as a direct result of the event. It was a great investment. The Forum may be the most positive happening in the livestock industry this year. The economy, our strong dollar, some regional weather problems, a drop in American fed cattle imports and the devastation of the pork industry have all had a negative impact. In spite of these there have been some strong purebred sales, but we need to be very much aware of the commercial price and the challenge facing the commercial cowboy if we want to remain solvent. Planning the future requires knowing where we are now and purebred seedstock producers haven’t done a good collective job of providing accurate and comprehensive statistics. We do record registrations and transfers but accurate sales reports have never been complete enough

to prove the value of maintaining a registered herd. The Canadian Beef Breeds Council is making an effort to collect some base line sales data and you are encouraged to respond to the recent request sent to all of us. We are pleased to announce the addition of an improved tool to our Genetic Evaluation. Both providers of Red and Black genetic production have agreed to share their formulas for the calculation of Interim EPDs and we will be having them programmed into our computer system immediately following this month’s evaluation. Interims will replace pedigree estimates for eligible animals and are a far more accurate prediction of how an animal’s progeny will perform. Both evaluations will also now include actual EPDs for ET calves in all cases where the recipient dam is a registered Angus with her own EPDs. The Board of Directors met on October 26 and 27 and put in a full two days. A new feature has been added to our web page (www.cdnangus.ca) which will provide easy identification and contact information for your elected directors. It will also feature an overview and summary of major topics covered by the board at the meeting. Our web page also has a monthly poll question designed to gather opinions for the directors. The poll is in the bottom left corner of the main page. We will use the Directors information page to report the results for recent poll questions. While on the web page you can use the links to visit the newest Angus Association in the world. Portugal has formed a new Association and my last act as Secretary of the World Angus Secretariat was to invite Portugal to join. Some folks in the Maritimes and Ontario can take credit for planting this seed during the Toronto Royal Winter Fair a few years ago. A chance meeting there was the impetus for them to get started. They are not large, but look at the page to see how keen they are.

The rapid advancement of genomics and DNA testing is providing some potentially positive tools for cattlemen. They are also providing significant confusion and concern. Old timers, which is most of us, will remember the days when a genetic defect could eliminate an entire cow family from the breeding program. Today, DNA tests exist to prove whether an animal is a carrier of a defect or not. Although the tests are not free, they will be a small cost to insure progeny from a carrier will be safe to breed and retain or not. Thousands of genetic defect tests have been completed in the United States and several hundred by Canadians. We now have a good snapshot of our herd and the decision was made to print all known information on registration certificates. The Board of Directors amended our regulations to require that all calves born after January 1, 2010 with a known genetic defect carrier within the first two generations of its pedigree must be tested free of the defect to be eligible for registration. Our office computer system has been programmed to run a herd analysis for anyone and identify all animals in that herd that have any known carriers in their pedigree. It is another information tool that you may find helpful. The good news is that we don’t have many carriers of genetic defects in the Canadian herd. During the past three years we have had no reported instances of Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM) and only three with Osteopetrosis (marble-bone disease). With the information available we should not have many more. It’s been a sad fall for some as we lost some friends in the Angus breed and we send condolences to the families of all. Sadness and loss is offset by joy and celebration. I am reporting this month as the world’s newest and proudest grandfather as we welcomed our first grandson, Liam, into the world on October 25. If I see you at the fall shows, I shall have pictures.

accepted the recommendation to allow the new rule to be self policing and review its acceptance after the show season. It was felt that no one would feel proper winning a Gold Show if they took advantage of others who accepted and adhered to the rule. The Board has received some complaints and a few well-written suggestions on ways the rule could have been better implemented. The majority of the early shows went without a hitch and everyone seemed to follow the new rules. The number of compliments over improved environment in the barns has far outnumbered the complaints about the restrictions.

What is the Canadian Angus Foundation?

Ask the CEO What has the reaction been to the decision to ban aerosols from Gold Shows?

The decision to ban aerosols and paints from Association-sponsored Gold Shows was taken by the Board of Directors in February. It was revisited at a combined meeting with all provincial presidents and secretaries in May. The only concern expressed at that meeting was the enforcement provision that would see the provinces lose all show grants if they allowed the use of aerosols and paint. There was general feeling that the majority of show people would accept and understand the reason behind the rule and adhere to it as long as everyone else did. The Board, after reviewing their decision, Page 36

Obviously it is one of the best kept secrets in the Association because more than one person asked me the question. Our Foundation is a registered charity. Donations are acceptable and tax deductible. The funds are required to be used for promotion of youth activities, scholarships, research, or preservation of our archives. The Foundation was substantially impacted this past year by some generous donations and the volunteer board will be reviewing and promoting their objectives and priorities during the next few months.

Commercial Chat

Brian Good

As we get into the swing of things, our reps are out at the feeder sales across Canada, promoting the Angus breed to the many buyers and sellers at the 65 locations we try to attend each year. Bob Prestage has been helping Ken Cox at the northern Alberta and northwest Saskatchewan sales, Jack Brown has been in British Columbia, Blair McCrae in Manitoba, Wayne Gallup in Quebec, John Duivenvoorden in Ontario, and I fill in the gaps where needed. Cecilie Fleming is coordinating the run in southern Alberta where the steak frys are put on and Doug Reid is attending sales in northern Alberta. This is a great team of people who do a superb and professional job for the Angus breed. A lot of hours are spent behind the wheel to get to the next location and I am very proud of the people that work for you in their area promoting Angus

to our members’ number one customer, “the commercial man”. We have three new feeder sales in Quebec and one in Manitoba. I understand they were well attended with super quality and numbers for their first go. I started off this fall in a few smaller numbered sales right close to home. The numbers were smaller because of the late harvest. Prices held steady from last year, but faded a bit because of the high dollar, low futures and low fat cattle prices. I ventured into western Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan for a few sales, where prices were somewhat suppressed but the good ones still sold strong and were in demand. In these locations, there was strong eastern interest in the calves. Last week I headed for west-central Saskatchewan, and this is what I want to talk about the most. Mankota Weigh Co., for the third year in a row, have been averaging 3,000 plus head of all Angus tagged, all age verified black Angus calves. There are a lot of one-owner cattle, and the remainder are sorted into tri-axle loads to make it easy for the buyers. And speaking of buyers, this sale has certainly got the job done attracting them from across Canada. There were buyers in attendance from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. The prices were on par with last year and in some cases even a shade higher. This is the ultimate scene for an Angus event of this nature. The quality is high, the prices are good, the cattle are identified, the buyers are in place, and

they get the job done. I am very proud and excited to attend their sale each year, and our producers in that area are really behind the event and make it an “event”. If you get the chance, attend this top commercial sale. The spin-off from this sale has had positive impact on other sales in the area. We also have a number of sales across Canada that are starting to sort the calves by our tags at the buyers’ request. This is very important, as our new Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program requires that the calves be identified with an Angus tag, both red and black calves. Wayne Gallup, John Donaldson, Bob Switzer, Cheryl Hazenberg and I have been working hard on solidifying a spot for Angus tags in Quebec. Many meetings have been held and we are making headway. The Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program is taking off and we have over 10 participants signed up from right across Canada. Call the office or me for further details. In closing, keep those good calves coming to town, as your quality does make the difference at the other end. Tag those Angus, as you will see with Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed how important this is becoming to our customers. I am proud and excited about what the Angus breed has done to enhance and support the commercial cattle industry right across Canada. Brian Good CAA Commercial Fieldman (403) 391-4037

Canadian Angus Association - CACP Tags

Cheryl Hazenberg CACP Tag Now More Valuable than Ever

There have been a lot of changes over the past year to the Canadian Angus Certification Program (CACP). The Canadian Angus

Association is the first breed to be involved with the Beef InfoXchange System (BIXS), and more details will follow as we get closer to the full launch of our community within this system. Also, after the launch of the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program, packers and branded beef programs across the country are seeking Angus tagged calves. As more programs are getting on board, we need more tagged cattle to fill the demand. As purebred breeders you may ask yourself why you need to tag your cattle when you have a registration certificate to prove they are Angus. But why not show pride in your Association’s programs by tagging your cattle with a CACP tag? Your customers are more likely to be excited about the program if you are. Show your pride, lead by example and order your CCIA tags through the Canadian Angus Association. As the demand for Angus beef Angus World

grows it benefits everyone involved in the breed. Tag order forms are included in the Member Renewal notices mailed in December and are available anytime through the Canadian Angus Association’s website. We also have the ability to print your CACP tag numbers on your registration certificates. The numbers have to be cross-referenced to a registration number or submitted when applying for registration of your calves. Electronic templates are available from the office for your convenience. I always welcome your feedback on the program. Comments and questions can be directed to me at cheryl1@cdnangus.ca, or by phoning or faxing the office. Kajal Devani Recessive Genetic Defects in Beef Cattle

Recessive genetic defects can be found in almost any species of animal in the world. These originally come about by a spontaneous mutation in a random gene. These mutated genes are recessive to the normal gene, and therefore cannot be recognized until two carriers of the same mutation are bred to result in an affected calf. Breeding technology, such as embryo harvesting and AI, has meant that certain blood lines are recurrently dispersed into some herd books, potentially propagating these recessive genes. Historically, beef cattle breeders have identified these mutations after observing affected calves. Line breeding on the dam and sire was then used to confirm their genetic profiles. Today, DNA technology has allowed us to identify carriers of certain recessive traits without having to line breed or wait for an affected calf. Researchers have identified market demand for commercial tests for certain recessive genetic defects that are present in Angus cattle. These

tests quickly and efficiently allow Angus breeders to identify any potential of an animal producing progeny that are affected by these defects. These DNA tests are one more tool that Angus breeders have to their advantage. Today, Angus animals can be genetically profiled more completely for the buyer. Currently, DNA testing is available for three inherited defects found in Angus cattle. Arthrogryposis Multiplex, AM, (formerly known as Curly Calf Syndrome) is a recessively inherited genetic defect found in Charolais and Angus cattle. In Angus animals, affected calves are stillborn with twisted or curved spines. The mutated gene that causes this defect is recessive to the normal gene. This means that animals that have one normal gene and one defective gene will always look “normal”. However, 50% of progeny will inherit this defective gene. When bred to another carrier, 25% of the resulting calves will be affected. Using the DNA test for this gene allows Angus breeders to identify the genotype of their animals easily; thereby enabling Angus breeders to avoid propagating the gene within the breed, and also to fully disclose the animal’s genetics to potential buyers. Another genetic defect in Angus for which a DNA test has been developed is Neuropathic Hydrocephalous (NH). This recessively inherited genetic defect is present in most beef breeds including Hereford and Angus cattle. Affected calves are stillborn and retain fluid in their brain or cranium, giving this defect the moniker of “balloon head”. The causative mutation in the Angus breed has been identified to have originated in the same animal that initially propagated the gene for AM. However, the two genes are not linked. So, an animal having been tested as a non-carrier of the AM gene could still have inherited the gene for NH.

A simple DNA test can now identify for Angus breeders the genotype of any Angus animal in regards to these defects; including carriers of the gene for Osteopetrosis (OS). OS has in the past been referred to as marble-bone disease. This inherited defect has been identified in the Angus and Holstein breeds. Affected calves are stillborn with brittle bones, stiff extended limbs and highly compacted jaws. The DNA tests are available through several accredited laboratories including MMI Genomics, Pfizer Animal Genetics, Igenity, and AgriGenomics; and can be performed on hair, semen and blood samples. The Canadian Angus Association office facilitates getting samples to these laboratories for members. Many export markets for beef cattle genetics are now demanding more complete genetic profiling on animals. Angus breeders have access to DNA tests validated on Angus animals only to ensure that potential buyers have complete confidence when buying Angus animals. Nationally, potential buyers of Angus genetics can also be rest assured that they will be purchasing a completely profiled animal that brings with it quality rather than genetic surprises. Angus breeders and potential purchasers of Angus animals can find out more about genetic defects on the Canadian Angus Association website (www.cdnangus.ca), or by contacting me at 1-888-571-3580 or kajal1@cdnangus.ca. Also available to members of the Canadian Angus Association is a herd analysis to identify potential carriers of these genes, and genetic counseling to ensure cost-effective testing. Canadian Angus Association - Breed Development DNA testing: Microsatellites and SNP technologies

Recent developments in DNA technologies have provided the industry with new methods for parentage verification and traits evaluation. Two methods are currently available to test cattle: microsatellite markers and single nucleotide polymorphisms markers (SNP). Markers are DNA regions that are transmitted from an animal to its progeny. Microsatellite markers are genome regions where short sections of the genetic code (letter combinations) are repeated many times (e.g. ACTTGAGAGAGACTGA). Microsatellite markers are highly variable (polymorphic) in length and composition. These markers are passed on from generation to generation, making Page 38

Fall Edition 2009**

them a method of choice for parentage evaluations. Because of their length, microsatellite markers are susceptible to mutations that may affect test results. SNP markers are single letter differences (e.g. GTCA/TCGTT) in the genome. It is estimated that there are approximately 30 to 100 times more SNPs in the bovine genome than there are microsatellite markers. They are generally more stable than microsatellite markers, meaning lower mutation rates. SNPs, however, are less informative. It takes roughly 80–100 SNPs to provide the same information as 10–15 microsatellite markers. Regardless of testing method used, quality data starts with a quality sample. Hair samples are still the predominant sampling method used. Hair samples can be acquired from any area that has Angus World

coarse hair and is as free of foreign material (dirt, manure, urine) as possible. Upon pulling an approximate minimum of 20 hairs, a visual inspection should be done to confirm the presence of roots. Using tape to keep the hair together, or tying in a knot if the hair is long enough, facilitates hair sample processing in the laboratory. The Saskatchewan Research Council’s (SRC) GenServe Laboratories™ offer both types of tests. For more information, contact SRC GenServe Laboratories toll-free at 1-866-420-2293 or email genserve@src.sk.ca. By Bruce Mann, Laboratory Lead, Saskatchewan Research Council

Our breeders have shown their adaptability with technology, and we are positively influenced by this. Electronically submitted data has shown continuous growth, and it makes us more efficient and benefits the Canadian Angus Association and the many breeders who are using this technology. The reward to the breeders is the incentive of a price break. An electronic registration for a Spring 2009 born calf that was submitted prior to July 15, 2009 was $15, regardless of its age. For herds that calve in the Fall, the same incentive is offered if the calf registration is received electronically by December 15, 2009. The possibility of saving $5 per registration was provided as an incentive to our breeders for the last two years and has proven to be popular. There are many breeders who utilized electronic methods for submitting their

weaning weights for the November 1 deadline, and they were rewarded with a very quick turnaround time for the results. If you are concerned abut the environment and are an electronic user, please let us know by sending an email to registry@cdnangus.ca, telling us your member number, that you would prefer electronic copies of herd inventory and EPD performance results only. Many of our members who are electronic users are receiving both paper and electronic copies, and may not realize there is a choice to receive only electronic results. If you are interested in becoming an electronic user, you can contact us by filling out CAAFORM21-Electronic Registration Agreement which is available from our website, or you can utilize the on-farm software program called HerdMaster, which is compatible with the Canadian Angus Association. This program is available for a demo by contacting Wendy Newton or Tyler Newton at HerdMaster Canada. Visit their website at www.herdmaster.ca to download a free trial. As a seller of purebred animals, you should know that you have responsibilities under the Canadian Animal Pedigree Act and also within the guidelines of the Canadian Angus Association. One of the responsibilities is that if you are selling an animal as a purebred, it must be registered and it must be transferred within six months of the sale date. We often receive

phone calls from innocent buyers who haven’t received a transferred paper, and that reflects poorly on the Angus breed. There is a value in a registration certificate. There is demand for Angus tagged cattle, especially now that we have developed the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed program. The registration certificate identifies ownership of the animal, contains the three-generation pedigree of the animal, shows the identification of animals within the pedigree that have been tested for genetic defects, is a legal document recognized under The Animal Pedigree Act, and is recognized by international standards. The value to a commercial producer is that a transferred registration certificate communicates to the buyer that the purebred producer he bought the animal from is reputable and follows the Canadian Angus Breeder Guarantee Guidelines. The fee that we charge for transfers provides revenue which will ultimately add more resources to the programs that will benefit our members and add value and potential profit increases for members and their customers. To find more information about Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed, please visit our website. Sharmayne Byrgesen Registry Department Canadian Angus Association

Canadian Angus Association - Junior Ambassador

As your Canadian Junior Angus Ambassador I have been exposed to many great opportunities. The World Angus Forum was a show I hope many Canadian Angus breeders had the opportunity to attend. This was a sight that words can’t explain. Whether it was the alleys surrounded by spectators from around the

world, the barns filled with top quality Angus cattle, or our enthusiastic juniors taking part in the junior show and meeting international juniors, this event will not be forgotten and put Canadian Angus on the map. PEI was a great experience seeing many eastern Angus cattle and touring great herds. To all the juniors who attended and participated in this event, a great job done and I know our breed has a tremendous future with our strong junior association. We were fortunate to see the scenery of the island, have a taste of their second-to-none seafood and visit the home of Anne of Green Gables. The American LEAD conference was held August 7–9 in San Francisco, California. This event consisted of 180 juniors from every corner of the States. The enthusiasm and commitment from these juniors from across the States was very impressive. I had the chance to tour a 5000 cow milking dairy operation, the Golden Gate Bridge, an almond farm, Vintage Angus, Silveira Angus World

Brothers Angus, and drove by Alcatraz. It made me proud when these American Juniors from all across the United States complimented Canadians on their friendly and outgoing personalities. To all you Juniors, please note that our Canadian Goal conference is being held this February in Saskatoon. This will be a great opportunity to meet many junior Angus members and take in many well known guest speakers. I hope your summer has gone well, and I am looking forward to a busy fall meeting and talking to many Juniors and people involved in the Angus breed. If I haven’t met you yet along the way please come and introduce yourself and we can have a chat. Matt Fleury Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador
