The Accuracy of the EBV, the higher the percentage the more accurate the EBV.

The Percentile Band of the breed the animal sits in for that trait whole population.

WKG22T53 has a 400W of +109 at 83% accuracy which is in the top 10% of the breed for 400 day weight.

PERCENTILES, HOW TO USE

Traits Observed: measurements we have taken.

Genomics: DNA testing that has been conducted.

Actual birth weight of the animal. The majority of calves are born in a tight band of actual birthweights and a couple of kilograms in additional birthweight can be easily handled by most females

Status: all catalogue Herd Book Registered (HBR).

Using the percentiles that any trait sits within allows you to quickly identify exactly where an animal ranks within the breed. The 50th percentile is breed average.

1 means the animal is in top 1 percent of the breed.

For majority of traits it is considered desirable to rank closer to the top 2 percent of the breed, but it is not always the case i.e. MCW where you are wanting a moderate cow. 4

CARING FOR YOUR NEW BULL

Respect your bulls, and handle them quietly, walk them rather than rushing them. Treat them with care and in a gentle manner and they will do likewise to you. A bull leaving Diamond Tree is leaving the security of the mob and will arrive in a strange environment at the purchaser’s property. Unload him and make sure he has a steer or cow as a companion straight away, if you can’t put him out into the mob immediately.

A young bull can move in with older bulls and settle in well, but remember, being the youngest, he will get the last of any feed available, due to the pecking order. The paddock needs to be reasonably large so he can keep away from the others and find adequate feed.

Young bulls are still growing fast and need enough feed to maintain their growth pattern and be able to settle with the cows quickly and efficiently.

Diamond Tree bulls are all injected with 7in1 vaccine (for protection against leptospirosis, pulpy kidney disease, tetanus, blackleg, black disease and malignant oedema) twice at 3 months of age, at a six weekly interval and then they receive a booster as a yearling. A booster injection of Ultravac 7in1 must be given every 12 months to maintain immunity.

When the bull is finished with the cows for the season we suggest he should be drenched and injected with vitamin B12 with selenium. Regular injections of B12 with selenium and drenching will help ensure the ongoing health of your bull.

These bulls will handle approximately 50 cows on their own, or can go in with 100 cows after a good artificial insemination programme.

Diamond Tree bulls are used to being handled with vehicles, four wheeler motorbikes and by stockman on foot. The fences are electrified and the bulls treat them with respect.

You must always keep a regular watch over your bull when he is out with the cows, as accidents can happen. Every day he is not working will cost you dollars. During the mating season, boundary riding should include the observation of bulling cows, and the bull serving. This is easy because the cows will group together, have full bags of milk and will be followed by male calves.

If the bull does not behave in a normal manner serving, he must be replaced immediately. If a cow has been served before the observer arrives, the bull may not repeat the performance. It has been noted that bulls can simply scratch their penis on dry manure on a cow’s backside, infection can set in and a very large and alarming looking appendage can form. If treated quickly and efficiently this can be remedied.

Our veterinary advice is that a suspected broken penis is often just an infection and if observed straight away can be treated and cured.

When the season is finished, the bull should be drenched and put away with enough feed in front of him. Adequate feed will help stop fighting and help the bull settle into the bull group.

Always be considerate to your bull and handle him with respect. You will find you will receive this respect back from him.
