This photo was taken around 1930 by Edna Winters Burgatt. The house was located on the corner of Brant-Farnham and Hardpan Road. This photo was submitted to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society in 1995 by Mrs. Henrietta Geshan who believed that the boys were members of her second grade class. We don’t know if Henrietta attended the Mud Street School or the Brant I School. The boys names are not known; we hope that someone is able to provide the names to us for our records.

Students in Miss Rozwood’s Grade 1 class had Grinch day on December 18th. The students left their uniforms at home and dressed as characters that would be in the “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” Book. All the their centers had a Grinch theme and the kids had to write a letter to the Grinch asking him to not steal Christmas. At the end of the day, the kids were able to watch the cartoon ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. Pictured: Morgan McCarthy, Aidyn Urbanowicz, Chloe Wagner & Campbell Rutz

A.J. Schmidt Students Entertain with Presentation of “A Party in a Pear Tree”
Recently, 4th and 5th grade students at A.J. Schmidt Elementary kicked off the 12 Days of Christmas with their presentation of the Christmas musical “A Party in a Pear Tree!”
Under the direction of music teacher Mrs. Martin, students presented the story of a bird named Party who finds herself stuck in a pear tree. Many characters from the 12 days of Christmas came up with creative and hilarious ways to try to get her down, only to find Party stuck up in the tree again at the end of the show.
Students worked from October through December to prepare songs, dances, costumes and speaking parts. All of their hard work paid off, as the performances were flawless. Congratulations to all students involved on a fantastic holiday celebration!

First Senior Social Event at the Evans Senior Center
Director Veronica Sullivan and staff hosted 1st Senior Social Event for the members of the Senior Center. This particular event was a huge success by the sounds of laughter and the witnessing of seniors dancing the evening away by listening to the band “Mike Hartman and the Runaway Train”. The centers continuing progresses to move forward and promote diverse events are being well received by the individuals in the community. It was rewarding for the staff to see all their efforts be appreciated and a success. The arrangement for the culinary students to assist with the food menu was an added bonus to the evening along with the several youthful ladies that volunteered their time to assist with beverages, dance with seniors and cleanup. Evans Senior Center is promoting and pushing for all ages to interact and be part of the new direction of the center, with this being said we all look forward for the spring fling event that the Director is in the works to arrange.

Lake Shore Senior High Sociology Students Visit Buffalo Refugee Services and West Side Bazaar
In November, approximately thirty-five students from Mrs. Chimera’s sociology classes visited Journey’s End Refugee Services and the West Side Bazaar in Buffalo. The purpose of the trip was for students to understand how the recent resettlement of refugees in the city of Buffalo has had a positive economic impact on the community, particularly the West Side.
Students met with the Community Relations representative from Journey’s End who explained the screening and resettlement process refugees faced. Additionally students were able to ask questions to a refugee at the end of the presentation. The sociology classes also brought donations to help recent arrivals including cleaning supplies, canned goods and outerwear.
At the West Side Bazaar, students were able to enjoy sampling foods from vendors from over nine countries. They were met by the Operations Manager who gave them a tour of the bazaar, whose slogan is “Bringing the World to Buffalo.” The bazaar has enabled many immigrant, refugee and low-income individuals to pursue their dreams of small business ownership. Many sociology students hoped to return in the near future to try more international cuisine.

From the Old Photo Album
Camp Porter 74th Regiment parading on Railroad Avenue Farnham, N.Y. 1909
Documented by our town of Brant and village of Farnham history books and photographs, Brant was directly involved in World War I when a National Guard training camp was established on the shore of Lake Erie, principally on the property belonging to J. Kelderhouse. According to the 1909 New Century Atlas of Erie County, the J. Kelderhouse land was located in lots 89 & 87 and consisted of approximately 112 acres, bordered on the West by Lake Erie and the North by the Town of Evans. The National Guard regiments arrived via special train on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad. (L.S. & M.S.R.R.) Uniformed National Guard troops and the Headquarter’s Band were discharged from the L.S. & M.S.R.R train station on Railroad Avenue in the village of Farnham and marched in full uniform to “Camp Josiah Porter”, which was named so in respectful memory of Major-General Josiah Porter. As per the Annual Report of Brigadier-General Lauren W. Pettibone, Commanding Fourth Brigade of N.G.N.Y., the 65th Regiment performed field service from July 31st to August 7th, 1909 and the 74th Regiment performed field service from August 7th to August 14th, 1909, near Farnham, Erie County, N.Y. The report also states: “the respective commanding officers, 65th and 74th Regiments, will each detail a wagon guard consisting of one quartermaster, one lieutenant, one regimental or post quartermaster sergeant, one sergeant, three corporals, one musician, one hospital corps man, two cooks and twenty-four privates to accompany the baggage train of his command from its armory to camp.” It is written that “upon arrival at Farnham, commanding officers will march their troops to Kelderhouse’s farm, three miles distant on the lake shore, where they will report to the Adjutant-General, 4th Brigade, and camp site will be assigned. The entire camp was laid out into company streets by Major George J. Metzger, Corps of Engineers.” Each day of camp began with reveille at 6:00AM, followed by a full day of drills, assemblies, school, formations, mess calls and to mark the day’s end, the playing of Taps at 11:00PM. The musician was busy as he had to “call to assemble” each of the activities. On Sundays, drills were omitted, but there was a Church Service at 10:30AM.
Today, the Evangola State Park is situated in part on the J. Kelderhouse’s property, with over 80% of the Evangola State Park located within the town of Brant boundaries. Sometime after 1909, the Kelderhouse property was owned by Mr. William Shaw, who sold it to the Messina Lumber Co. The land was also used as a park called “Moonlight Bay”. This same property was also owned by the Doyle sisters, prior to NYS taking ownership. The Brant-Farnham Historical Society has a collection of early 1900 Camp Hughes and Camp Porter military photos by Lynn Walters, a photographer who had lived in the Town of Brant. The society also has a prayer service program from the Headquarters 65th Regiment, N.G.N.Y. of Camp Josiah Porter, near Farnham, N.Y. dated Sunday morning, August 1, 1909.

Lake Shore Leadership Class Welcomes Seneca Nation Leader
The Lake Shore High School Leadership in Action Class welcomed alumnus (and proud LS mom) Nikki Seneca. Mrs. Seneca works for the Seneca Nation Gaming Commission handling employment communication to both Native Americans and non-native employees. Mrs. Seneca talked to students about her definition of leadership and how she applies them in both her career and home as a mother of four daughters. November was Native American Heritage Month, and Lake Shore Central is very proud to have about 344 students from the Seneca Nation with 102 in the high school alone. Mrs. Seneca provided perspectives from a female, Seneca and corporate point of view. The Lake Shore Leadership Program would like to thank Mrs. Seneca for her time, wisdom and advice.
Her outside knowledge and straight talk provided students with a positive, female perspective regarding leadership and character

St. Francis Basketball Win 3 in a Row, Sireika Approaches 1,000 Pts.
After a disappointing loss in the season opener to Orchard Park 63-46 the Red Raiders have won 3 in a row. The season couldn’t have started off worse for the Red Raiders as they were overwhelmed in the opener by an Orchard Park team that forced the Raiders into 30 turnovers, winning 63-46. The Raiders have only 1 starter remaining, senior Bo Sireika, from last year’s record setting team and it showed. Junior forward Lucas Theisen led the Red Raiders with 13pts. Despite the disappointing start the Red Raiders have gotten back on track the last 3 games and they are being led by a familiar player, senior guard Bo Sireika who has scored 26, 26, and 18 over the past three games as he approaches 1,000 career points, he currently stands at 995.
Next up was a pair of visiting teams from Long Island, Holy Trinity and St. John the Baptist. Holy Trinity, ranked # 8 in Long Island large school polls was up first. The Red Raiders played an excellent all-around game and led from start to finish as they built an 18 point lead in the 4th quarter winning with a score of 77-70. Holy Trinity fought hard in the final frame but the Red Raiders hit their foul shots to seal the victory. The Red Raiders had 9 players score in this one, led by B Sireika with 26 pts and Lucas Theisen with 16.
The next day the Red Raiders matched up with St. John the Baptist at Daemen College. In a very sloppy game by both teams the Red Raiders used at 15-0 run to close the game, erasing a 4 point deficit to win 62-51. Senior Bo Sireika scored 26 for the second straight night while also grabbing 10 rebounds for his first double double of the season. Junior Lucas Theisen scored 15 pts and dished out 5 assists in the victory.
In the final game of this 4 game set the Red Raiders traveled to Williamsville South to take on the state ranked and #6 ranked team in Western New York. The Raiders came out focused and on fire from 3 point range knocking down their first three 3 pointers, finishing the half with 6 as they built a 25 point lead. Williamsville South came out of half time intent on cutting into the lead but in a defensive quarter the Raiders stayed with the Billies and held a 20 pt. lead going into the 4th. Williamsville South turned up the pressure and caught fire from 3 point range in the final stanza but the Red Raiders kept their composure and hit key free throws down the stretch to earn the upset victory 66-53. Senior guard Bo Sireika came into the contest needing 23 points to reach the 1,000 pt. milestone for his St. Francis career. It looked like he might get it in the first half nailing his four 3 point attempts in the quarter. Sireika finished the game with 18 pts putting him 5 shy of the mark. He will look reach this milestone this Saturday against Medina at St. Mary’s of Lancaster, tip is at 3pm. Junior Lucas Theisen scored 13 pts and junior Dorion Ivey chipped in with 10 Contribtued by St. Francis High School

Legislator Mills allocates funding for Evans-Brant Citizens for Responsible Choices
Erie County Legislator John Mills announces that the Legislature has approved his request to allocate funding for the Evans-Brant Citizens for Responsible Choices (CRC) in the 2018 Erie County budget.
“The CRC is doing amazing work in the greater EvansBrant community and I thought it was important that Erie County step up and support its mission next year. I look forward to continuing to work with the CRC as it fights drug and alcohol abuse,” said Legislator Mills.
The CRC will receive $2,000 next year.
“The Evans-Brant Citizens for Responsible Choices (CRC) is elated and extremely thankful to Legislator Mills for funding obtained for us in the new Erie County budget. We work to spread information regarding the effects of marijuana, drugs, and alcohol, especially in our youth. These monies will make it possible to reach so much more of the community. Any community group comes to realize that success is measured in small steps. We plan on using these monies to obtain billboard(s) to disperse information. We see this as a big step in achieving our mission. Our thanks again to Legislator Mills,” said David Esis, president, Evans-Brant CRC.
The additional funding was added into the 2018 budget while also decreasing the property tax rate for the fourth consecutive year.

Now Taking Orders for Holiday Cookies!

Christmas has come and gone. Jesus said that parents know how to give good gifts to their children (Luke 11:13). God gives us good gifts if we ask Him (Matthew 7:11). Salvation is a gift, not a reward (Romans 6:23). Some children may have received smartphones for Christmas. They were probably thrilled, but parents, watch out! Laura Kelly of the Washington Times wrote an article (11/14/17) every parent should read. It was called, “Teen suicide rate rises with heavy use of smart phones, social media” Her article was based on a book by Psychologist Jean Twenge who reveals that, among teens who spent 5 hours or more on their phones per day, 48% reported depression, and suicidal thoughts, plans or attempts. Teen girls are especially at risk.

Smart phones are not smart. Jean ’s suggestion? Don’t let a child have a smartphone till 8th grade. Parents, get a handle in your home. Stay connected to your kids daily. How about reading some good books this year?
