ATTENTION RESIDENTS:
Bicyclists and motorists are reminded that bicycles on public streets have the same rights and responsibility as automobile drivers. Respect the right-of-way of bicyclists because they are entitled to share the road with other drivers. Here are some important points for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians to remember:
Bicyclists:
• Must ride in the same direction as other traffic, not against it.
• Must ride in a straight line as near to the curb or edge of roadway as practical -not on the sidewalk.
• Must make left and right turns in the same way that drivers do, using the same turn lanes.
• May legally move left to turn left, to pass a parked or moving vehicle, another bicycle, an animal, or to make a turn, avoid debris or any hazard.
• May choose to ride near the left curb or edge of a one-way street.
• May use a left turn lane. lf the bicyclist is traveling straight ahead, he or she should use a through traffic lane rather than ride next to the curb and block traffic making right turns.
Drivers:
• Must look carefully for bicyclists before opening doors next to moving traffic or before turning right.
• Must safely merge toward the curb or into the bike lane.
• Must not overtake a bicyclist just before making a right turn. Merge first, then turn.
Pedestrians: (NYS V&T Law-Article 27-Section 1156. Pedestrians on roadways)
• (a)Where sidewalks are provided and they may be used with safety it shall be unlawful for any pedestrian to walk along and upon an adjacent roadway.
• (b)Where sidewalks are not provided any pedestrian walking along and upon a highway shall when practicable walk only on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic which may approach from the opposite direction. Upon the approach of any vehicle from the opposite direction, such pedestrian shall move as far to the left as is practicable.
Just remember when riding your bike, be courteous, follow the rules of the road, wear safety equipment and when on your bike or in your automobile always practice defensive operation.

Angola Gazebo Concerts Announced for 37th Season
The Summer 2019 Angola Park & Gazebo Committee Concert Schedule has been completed. The concert series is held at the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park, 58 Center St., in the block behind the post office.
• The opening concert on June 19th sees Crash Cadillac returning to the park. They feature Linda Giancarlo on vocals. The evening is sponsored by the Lake Shore Federal Credit Union.
• The second concert on June 26th will welcome Rockin Robin with Patti Cook and a friend. This is a new group recommended by concert patrons. Sponsored by Shultz & Company Hardware and Appliances, Angola’s Oldest Business established in 1861.
• July 3rd will see Sunset Bluegrass, an acoustic music group featuring local resident Dr. Peter Mirando and friends. The evening sponsored by Friends of the Village Inc.
• July 10th will feature the 70 member Boston Town Band, a classic summer community band consisting of people that range in age from post-middle school students to senior citizens. The evening is sponsored by the American Legion Newcomb-Long Post #928. The Legion will “Post the Colors” to open the evening.
• July 17th will see the outstanding Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra, a fabulous group from Lancaster Schools at the park for the second year in a row. They were requested to return by last year’s audience, which gave them a standing ovation at the end of their presentation. TOPS Friendly Markets - Angola Store is sponsoring the concert.
• On July 24th, Formula Band, Buffalo’s Premiere Italian Band, will be at the park. They present a wide range of Italian music from traditional through modern. Much of the music they play was obtained when they toured Sicily and Southern Italy a few years ago. They are sponsored by Chiavetta’s Catering and Chicken Barbecue.
• On July 31st, Kokomo Time Band, a beach and island music group from Chautauqua County, will be back to the park after an absence of several years. They promise a light, fast-moving presentation for the evening. They are sponsored by Evans Bank and The Evans Agency.
• On August 7th, Creek Bend Bluegrass presenting real “Americana”, or mountain music, will be performing. the group features the local Panfil Brothers, Mark & Chris, and a variety of instruments. the evening is sponsored by the Lake Shore Central Teachers Association.
• On August 14th sees Craig Wilkins performing country music and features a Johnny Cash Tribute. The group of gentlemen plays regularly at the Erie County Fair and has been featured on stages in Nashville, Tennessee. New Sponsor Apex Health & Wellness is presenting the concert.
• On August 21st Queen City Swing, a 12-piece “Big-Band” with a vocalist, will be doing a wide variety of charts from the 1940’s to the 2000’s. The band is sponsored by Goya Foods Great Lakes and the American Musicians Union.
• On August 28th The Frankfurters, Western New York’s Most Popular German Band, will close the season. The band presents a wide variety of German music from traditional “Beer Garden” tunes to popular German dance music. Special presentations include 13foot long, wooden Alpine horn selections, tunes played on a variety of bells, a “singing” saw and other things they picked up while on an extensive Southern German, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, and Austrian tour a few years ago. The concert is sponsored by The Evans Township Lions Club and The American Musicians Union.
The rain location for all of the concerts will continue to be the New Angola Theater on North Main Street, which is made available through the cooperation of SASi. Arrangements are underway with The Evans Township Lions Club for food service at the park each week. The “ice cream man” has in the past stopped at the park each week.
Members of the Park & Gazebo Committee hold a spring cleanup at the park each year. The Village of Angola Department of Public Works, under the supervision of Ray Ashton and Jack Krajacic, attends to the weekly maintenance of the park facility. The concert series is coordinated and produced by the 14 member Angola Park & Gazebo Committee in cooperation with the Angola Village Board.
Improvements at the park this year include the complete repainting of the Gazebo, the removal and replacement of two dead ash trees and a maple tree. The two remaining ash trees are treated commercially to preserve them for as long as possible. The installation of 17 new LED light fixtures last year for the stage of the Gazebo has added greatly to the illumination when needed. The re-lighting project was in cooperation with National Grid and their Lime Energy associates. The new lighting saves the Village $300 per year in light bulb and electric power costs.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket and plan to enjoy the 37th Season Of Concerts in the Gazebo at Angola’s Centennial Park.

Special Anniversary Envelopes to Highlight 175 Years of the Brant Post Office!
Sandy Fininzio is shown holding the displayed photo of her husband Vince Fininzio, who was the Brant postmaster from 1993 to 2006. In fact, Vince was postmaster when we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Brant PO in 2004! Both Sandy and Vince are Brant residents.

Just 2-1/2 weeks ago, a letter postmarked from Eugene, Oregon was addressed to and received by the Brant, N.Y. post office. The letter stated “I collect post office anniversary postmarks, and my paperwork shows that original post office in Brant was established 175 years ago, on May 25, 1844. On Saturday the 25th please use your office’s round date canceler to postmark the enclosed and return in the small envelope. Anything you can do to help me add your important day to my collection will be greatly appreciated! Happy 175th!”

Brant resident Jerry Wittmeyer stopped in to collect the 175th anniversary envelope of the Brant post office and the Brant, NY, 14027 date stamp.
Thankfully this letter was shared with the BrantFarnham Historical Society and truthfully we were quite embarrassed that we did not think to celebrate this anniversary date ourselves! However, because of this reminder and in honor of the 175th Anniversary date of the Brant post office, the Brant-Farnham Historical Society created two styles of anniversary envelopes. One envelope design depicted a hand drawing of the Brant post office by Paul Orlando. This drawing was prepared by Paul in 1995 (24 years ago), when he was a 4th grade student at the Brant 1 School. The second design included a photograph of the Brant post office taken in 1982 by then town Historian Carlton Winters. These envelopes were available and given to all who stopped into the post office on the anniversary date of May 25, 2019. In most cases, those who received the free envelope, purchased a forever stamp which was then canceled with the round Brant date and zip code stamp - making a sweet collector item! In addition, those who visited the Brant post office to help commemorate this 175th anniversary date were asked to sign the history book; recording their name in our local history.
The Brant post office was established on May 25, 1844. The office’s early location is not known. The first postmaster is recorded as Simeon Brown. Sometime after 1954, when Carl S. Chiavetta was postmaster, the post office moved to the current location at 10778 Brant Angola Road. David Tempestoso is the present day postmaster of Brant (Farnham and Angola) with Carrie McDonough as the Brant PSE.
And (for those of you wondering), in appreciation we did send two of the celebratory envelopes cancelled with the round Brant date stamp to our newest friend in Eugene, Oregon!

• Local food is often more nutritious. Because it’s not shipped long distances, locally grown food is often tasty and healthy. A study of 16 popular fruits & veggies showed the average was transferred nearly 1,500 miles before being sold. In addition, 39% of fruit and 12% of veggies were imported from outside the U.S. To keep food from going bad during travel, some fruits and veggies are picked before they are able to ripen and absorb nutrients. While this allows produce to ripen en route so consumers have access to fresh foods year-round, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says this mean foods often lack nutrients that would be there if allowed to ripen fully.
• Not only is local food better for your health, it’s also better for the environment. The average 18-wheeled semitruck travels about 5 miles per gallon of gas. That means about 500 gallons of diesel fuel is needed to haul produce an average of 1,500 miles.
• The local economy benefits when consumers buy their food locally. Because a large volume of produce is shipped upward of 1,500 miles, the local areas where the food was grown and raised don’t always benefit from the sale. On the other hand, buying food locally can improve the economic vitality of small, local farms.
• Farm-to-table eating offers diners a wide variety of choices when it comes to food. Farm-to-table offerings include any type of whole food imaginable, just as long as it’s in season. This not only means fresh fruit and veggies, but also meat, cheese and other dairy products, nuts and even baked items.

Brant Post Office Celebrates 175 Years

May 25, 1844 - May 25, 2019
PSE Carrie McDonough is standing in front of the Brant, N.Y. post office as it appeared on its 175th anniversary date of May 25, 2019! The U.S. flag is set at half-mast in honor of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday.

Carrie McDonough, PSE at the Brant PO is shown hand cancelling the anniversary envelopes with the local Brant postmark and date stamp. These days, as most are aware, almost all of the area mail is transported to Buffalo or Rochester before the post office places a cancel on it. It is becoming rare to find a local small town or village postmark. However, on this anniversary date of May 25, 2019, those who requested it, received the hand-stamped round cancel on their envelopes. That meant that the stamp of date and place gave credence and identity to this one small town of America. A recognition of the significant fact that the letter began its journey at the Brant, N.Y. Post Office, Zip Code 14027.
