Ben Pinkowski also took home All Catholic honors as he claimed the triple jump title Sunday. St. Francis displayed depth and resiliency throughout the two days as they fought off St. Joe’s who had the lead after first day of the All Catholic. Highlights included

The local corner store was not only a place to shop for food and necessities, but also a place to meet and visit with neighbors. We are sharing with you a few tidbits of information regarding our corner store (which sadly, is no longer in business), that we discovered in our 1964 Brant history book: “On the southeast corner now occupied by the Brant Supermarket, stood a general store owned by Horatio P. Muffit. He was succeeded by Richard Sherman about 1864. It was in this store that Casper Taylor would sit around the stove reading Civil War news to other customers. John Winter had the store in the 1870’s and Grange meetings were held upstairs. George W. Koehler, William Koehler were subsequent owners and were considered to have one of the best-stocked general stores in the area. The last owners before the building burned in 1917 were Henry and Eugene Bowers. Later, a gas station operated by Sam LaDuca and Clarence DiCenzo, was erected and in 1949, the Brant Supermarket was opened by Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Gervas.”

At the time of this 1982 photo, the owner of the Brant Super Market was John Herc. He had purchased the store from Anthony “Tony” Gervas in 1977. We had a chance to interview John in 2013 and according to him, it was Tony who added the cement block front addition we see today on the building. He also told us that during the “horse and buggy days” the back of the store was once used as a blacksmith shop. John recalled that Clarence DiCenzo owned the Kendall Motor Oil gas station and he told us that inside of the station was a 1950’s style soda fountain shop, serving milkshakes, hamburgers and hot dogs.

Under John’s management the supermarket included a deli, grocery and a meat case stocked with steaks, hamburger and pork chops. He also processed venison, making some of the best venison sausage around. His three children helped him to run the store. In 1990, John Herc sold the store to Mr. and Mrs. Chris Roblaird who owned the store until 1995.

The store sat vacant until 1997 when Judy Peacock purchased it, changing the name to “Pea-Deli”. During Judy’s ownership, counters and a seating area were added for in-store dining. She served breakfast sandwiches, lunch and dinner. Her submarine sandwiches and pizza were very popular! Judy owned the store until 2001.

When Judy made the decision to sell the store, a group of community minded individuals bought shares in the Brant Investment Group (BIG) and the Brant Renaissance Group, Inc. Determined to keep a store in town, the group purchased the store from Judy. After several attempts to find and retain store managers and after encountering a variety of hardships, the Brant Supermarket/Deli, affectionately known as “The Brant Store” eventually closed. Today, the building (no longer a store), is owned by a private individual.

Farnham Garage also known as Kraft’s Garage Corner of Commercial Street and Erie Road, Farnham, N.Y.

Today we are sharing with you, this history of “Kraft’s Garage”. It was written by Dr. Anna Martorana (former Mayor of Farnham) for the 1999 Summer/Fall Newsletter issue of Brant-Farnham History Whole No. 37.

In the fall of 1994 the remains of the first garage built in the Village of Farnham were removed. From 1925-1994 it stood at the intersection of Route 249 (formerly referred to as Mud St., currently referred to as Commercial St.) and Route 5 (also referred to as Erie Rd.). Like other buildings, this building had a history which ended when it was demolished. With its removal, Farnham also lost a part of its history.

Earlier records show that the tract of land on which the garage was built was owned by Fred Howard. On November 12, 1884 he turned the property over to Theodore Behrens and his wife Fredericka. It remained in the Behrens’ family until, March 31, 1920, when the Behrens sold a section of lot No. 83 township 8 range 9 to Frank Kraft and Joseph A. Egloff. It was on this plot of land that the garage was built. In 1921 Frank Kraft became sole owner of the lot and it was at this time that the garage was built.

The garage was a modern building, made in bricks and included all the necessary equipment to maintain and service automobiles. It sold gasoline, kerosene and Armstrong tires. Needless to say the garage was a success. It served a vital need for the village and its environment.

In 1925, like many other businesses of this era, it began to fail. From 1925 on, the property changed ownership many times. It was owned by Brickoltz and Al, Frank C. Nordblum and wife Ida, Silver Creek National Bank (1926-1936), and from 1937-1945 by the Huntly Manufacturing Co. (what this company intended to do with the building was never recorded). On November 17, 1952, the Huntly Co. sold it to Albert Meyers, who in turn conveyed (1982) it to his wife, Mary Catherine and daughter Josephine (Meyers) Battaglia. They are the last owners of the property.

The building began as a much larger building than the one that was demolished. When Route 5 was widened (changing from two lanes to four), the entire front of the building was removed. This was the section where the gasoline pumps were and where autos would drive in to receive service and gas. All that remained from the original building was the section in which automotive maintenance work was done.

Over its lifetime this building served as a garage, a bus stop, a waiting room, a gathering place for teen-agers, a candy store, source of employment for a few people and a repository for a variety of used tools and autos.

News from St. Anthony’s Church, Farnham, N.Y.

On May 7th, 2018 during a special mass, Rev. James W. Fliss, Pastor of St. Anthony’s Church in Farnham, N.Y. presented five candidates to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Their Confirmation teacher and coordinator is Keith Dash, who shared his time and faith in preparing the Candidates for this night.

During this mass, the Most Reverend Richard J. Malone, Th.D., Bishop of Buffalo performed the Confirmation ritual according to Roman Catholic tradition. Invited priests, confirmation sponsors, friends and family members and parishioners of St. Anthony’s Church were in attendance to witness this special celebration.

A Confirmation banner, sewn by Mrs. Bonnie Anticola was displayed on the altar. It consists of symbolic quilt squares prepared by each of the candidates. For her square, Rachael Conklin chose the symbols of a Ribbon and the Number 25 in memory of her best friend whose softball jersey number was 25. Benjamin Rinehart chose the symbols of a Cross, Fish, Sneaker, Hands, Tree and Sunset because they represent Faith and his inspiration of God. The symbol of a Softball, Flip Flops, Ribbon, Paw print and Cross were chosen by Sydnea Schiedel because they represent her love of sports, summer, her friend, animals and her faith. Leanne Schwartz chose the symbols of a Ribbon, a Cardinal and a Palm tree. The ribbon is in memory of her friend Caitlyn. The cardinal in memory of her grandma, and the Palm tree represents tropical places. Aidan VanSlycke chose the symbols of a Shoe and a Puzzle piece. The shoe representing Cross Country and Trackhis Patron Saint Sebastian. The puzzle piece symbolizing Autism awareness.

Following the Mass, all were invited and enjoyed a celebration reception in the church hall.

Pictured: Youth Ministry students of St. Anthony’s Church in Farnham, received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Shown in the photo are: L-R: Sydnea Schiedel, Leanne Schwartz, Rev. James W. Fliss - Pastor, Rachael Conklin and Benjamin Rinehart. Absent from the photo is Aidan VanSlycke.
