A few weeks ago the Archbishop of Canterbury (Justin Welby) tweeted "I'm often told that Archbishops should 'stick to religious and spiritual matters' and 'stay out of politics'.

I have a feeling that today might be another one of those days." A little later that day he spoke to the UK Trade Union Conference about economic policies and the harm they were doing. Twitter was subsequently filled with supporters and detractors.

From my perspective, the speech was based on the justice principles of the New Testament.

I have only been the member of one political body and I suspect it is not the one many people think. I joined while at university. I concluded my membership when I finished at the university but more importantly because I had been selected as an ordination candidate.

I learnt a number of things through the foray into the political sphere.

It's a game that is played hard.

Those who support a particular line are honoured but those seen as questioning or opposed can be

isolated. It is an opportunity to get things done. People in politics want to make a difference. I recognised that no one party or group had all of the good ideas. Somewhere you've got to learn that your "opponents" may have come up with better solutions. I learnt that you have to think through your ideas and be quick on your feet.

I consciously chose to step away from the party political world as my understanding of the Christian faith deepened. I found in Jesus and the teachings of Jesus a way of life and a set of guiding teachings which called from me a higher allegiance.

The claims of the Gospel were, for me, a claim on my whole life. As a person exploring ordination, I knew that my social teaching and action needed to always follow the way established by Jesus.

Many weeks ago, and without the breadth of engagement that the Archbishop of Canterbury can summon, I wrote a tweet. It was during the Government wrangling about who should be the leader of

the party and thus the Prime Minister.

I voiced concern over one of the candidates. The tweet was picked up by a local newspaper. Among other comments I said, "Australians have become quite tired of the revolving door of leadership in the office of Prime Minister. We need all sides of politics to deliver long-term visionary leadership which is focused on bettering Australia now and for decades ahead."

I received a small amount of mail, commentary and twitter traffic for my contribution. Some affirming and some not! Some of the critical comments were unsurprising – asking all religious leaders to stay out of politics and criticising the church for not paying taxes.

The tax question is an interesting question. Income tax for corporate bodies is based on income less expenses. Charitable donations (which make up the majority of our income) would be excluded. I anticipate that we would not be in a position to receive an income tax bill. This would be different

sometimes if we were subject to taxes around capital gains on property sales. Clergy pay income tax. Like workers in other charitable areas, churches are able to take advantage of exemptions from fringe benefits tax. The exemptions for religious bodies are wider than for other charitable groups in part because the way religious workers are cared for by religious bodies is more diverse. Churches pay GST like other corporations. Most churches pay some local rates but they are usually discounted. Churches are exempt from stamp duty on a range of transactions. On the whole, the wider community makes some tax concessions to enable religious bodies to function.

Australia doesn't have the same legal framework separating church and state that apply in other countries such as the United States. Our Constitution states, "The Commonwealth shall not make any law for establishing any religion, or for imposing any religious observance, or for prohibiting the free exercise of any religion, and no religious test shall be required as a qualification for any office or public trust under the Commonwealth."

On the whole, Australian lawmakers have continued to carve

out protections for religious groups.

One of the most significant areas of legislation has been around discrimination. Religious bodies are entitled to discriminate in certain circumstances. These exemptions have been seen as enabling bodies to retain their religious character.

They are seen as central to religious freedom in this country. In NSW, religious bodies are exempt from discrimination legislation around the appointment of clergy or the appointment of people to bodies established to propagate religion.

Further, there are exemptions to avoid injury to the religious susceptibilities of the adherents of that religion. In other ways, people holding religious views are not meant to be discriminated against when seeking employment in the ordinary workforce. They are expected to undertake their work without discriminating against others.

The current debate about protecting religious freedom is not simply associated with freedom for churches but also for the freedom for all religious people to enact their religious views in the public square – possibly by denying service from their business to people who hold profoundly different views to theirs.

In my view is a better place when

we have a robust exchange of ideas conducted in a civil manner. There will be competing views on how to run the country and who should run it. Religious people are contributors to such dialogue and will do so from positions informed by their faith.

Our Constitution protects all citizens from having laws shaped by religious obligations but doesn't silence religious contribution to public debate.

Some level of law will be necessary to ensure the international human right of freedom for a person to manifest their religious belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance. Such laws will always balance the circumstances where the granting of a human right to one person infringes on the human right of another person. My view is that churches should seek only the minimal level of protection and be cautious in seeking to invoke it.

The Gospel is filled with many stories of Jesus associating with a diverse range of people often to the scorn of the religious and civic elite. With love being the cornerstone of our faith we should be wary of determining that someone is not our neighbour and therefore not worthy of being loved. + Peter

Samaritans Announces New CEO Samaritans Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Brad Webb as Samaritans CEO. Brad has been Samaritans Deputy CEO – Strategy and Innovation since 2017 and has recently been in the role of Acting CEO. He has led Samaritans through continued sector change while overseeing key projects that strengthen Samaritans governance, technology and processes.

Chair of Samaritans Board, Jenny Cappellacci said, "Brad's dedication to the core values of Samaritans is evidenced through his enthusiastic and collaborative approach to leadership."

Originally from the private sector, Brad has been working in the NGO and public sectors for over 14 years, including 11 years in executive management with the Hunter Medical Research Institute.

He also has experience in strategic management consultancy to government agencies and NGOs, and has been a member of many public sector and NGO boards and committees.

Brad is committed to serving the NGO sector, and to strengthening connections and working relationships with other NGO agencies, government and the private sector in order to create real and lasting change.

PREPARING YOUR CHURCH FOR GROWTH THE REV'D CANON KESH RICO GOVAN Canon for Fresh Expression and Ministry Innovation

Does God desire for your church to grow? The short and simple answer is "Yes!" We can make this deduction from the fact that God has called us to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-20) and that ultimately disciples from all nations will be gathered together in heaven (Revelation 7:9). In the meantime, God is working through his body, the Church, to gather his children (Matthew 16:18).

The description of a living and growing church is found in Acts 2:42. These are the four things to which the early church devoted themselves:

1. All the believers devoted themselves to PRAYER. When God wants to touch a family, a church, a city or a nation, he begins by moving his people to pray. Prayer is always the first stage in God's plan to change the world. It is the power behind, in the midst of and in front of faith.

Is prayer at the heart of your church?

Are you regularly praying for your clergy and ministry leaders? Do you pray for the people who live and work in your community? Are you praying for growth?

The most important thing you can do as a church is pray. Why not start a weekly prayer group? The daily offices are a great way to pray. You could have a prayer box or a prayer board at the back of the church for prayer requests? Make prayer your priority and pray! Pray! Pray!

2. All the believers devoted themselves to the APOSTLES' TEACHING. The importance of preaching is rooted in Scripture. Jesus described the nature of his work in Luke 4:18 when he declared that his work was to "preach good news to the poor". 1 Corinthians 1:21 tells us that preaching was and still is God's idea: "It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe."

People relate to stories that connect with their own story. Use a story to explain a biblical point and they will remember it better. Think of situations you may have been through? For example: when talking about Mary, the mother of Jesus, you could talk about your own experience and excitement at the news of finding out that you were having a baby or, in the case of a man, when your partner told you the news.

People love stories and they help to illustrate biblical points - that's why Jesus used stories in his preaching too. People will travel for miles for preaching that relates to their life.

It was important at the beginning of the church after Pentecost and is still the most powerful tool that God has placed in our hands. ď ľ

3. All the believers devoted themselves to SHARING IN MEALS (including the Lord's Supper).

Jesus is recorded in the gospels as sharing several meals with different sorts of people. Each of these shared meals gave him an opportunity to enter into the lives of the people he ate with. Many of the meals that Jesus is recorded as eating in the gospels are also accompanied by times of teaching, healing, or other such miraculous work. Put simply, there is power in the time of a shared meal.

Why not organise a Parish Lunch at least once a year to bring your church together? It is also a great opportunity for you to invite family and friends. If you have two services in the morning, why not have a breakfast meal after the first service (this will help to unite both congregations). As Anglicans, we are well resourced with great cooks in our churches! A Saturday breakfast club, men's dinners and ladies' dinners are another great and simple way to meet up and eat together and invite others outside of the church community.

4. All the believers devoted themselves to FELLOWSHIP. Fellowship is an important part of our faith. Coming together to support one another is an experience that allows us to learn, gain strength, and show the world exactly who God is. Another important reason for fellowship is its impact on unbelievers. Jesus told his disciples, "By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (John 13:35).

Hospitality is key to church growth.

Welcome the people at the door and be especially mindful of a newcomer.

Make sure that they are made to feel welcome and after the service invite them to morning tea. Tell them about your church and be positive, and invite them to events in the week.

We all want young families in church but do we cater for them? A simple bag of "quiet toys" and colouring sheets will suffice for young children.

You could encourage older children to join the team of servers.

When these four elements are present, your church will experience growth.

We will never change the world by just "going" to church. We will only change the world by "being" the church! 

EVANGELISM BY PERSONAL INVITATION SOME QUICK TIPS TO START YOU ON THE JOURNEY HOW TO INVITE OTHERS TO CHURCH: 1.

Ask anyone – even if you expect that they will say "No". You may be surprised that they might say, "Yes!" A good time for invitations is at Christmas and Easter and special occasions like Mothers Day. "We're having a carol service at church – want to come along?"

2. Try to invite face-to-face – it counts for so much more than an email or a text message. Offer to meet them outside the church or offer to pick them up en route. "Why don't I meet you outside, 5 minutes before church starts?" "I'll be coming past your house – I can pick you up on the way?"

3. Be enthusiastic and positive about your church - do not gossip about your church or speak negatively about it and do not water down your invite. "You're probably busy?" "I'm not sure this

will really be your cup of tea, but…" etc. Talk your church up (but don't lie!)

Offer more – maybe link it to lunch after a morning service or dinner after an evening service.

It will give you an opportunity to talk about the service and the sermon. "After church why don't we go for lunch?"

Have a contingency plan – maybe they're not ready to come to church but they may want to do something on a smaller, more personal scale, just with you or a small group? "We have a mid-week group that meets on a Wednesday…"

Don't stress too much if they say "no!" - It's not the end of the world, nor even the end of the road (there will be other opportunities).

Pray, pray, and pray – and be wise. If people react adversely, don't keep pushing, let it go.

"None of us has all the wisdom or the resources to rebuild our churches but all of us have enough to start."

Anglican Care

AGED CARE NOW AND INTO THE FUTURE! Anglican Care has a wonderful history of care and concern developed over many years but we need to be constantly looking forward as at how we can best provide excellence in the services we provide to older people in a constantly evolving environment.

The aged care industry as a whole has undergone significant change in the past few years, driven by the Federal Government's Healthy Life Better Ageing Reforms. The basis of the reforms is to give Australians more choice when it comes to their own aged care. The future for aged care is now more consumer directed with the structure of aged care changing, giving the individual a greater level of control over how and where they use their funding.

The reforms have also resulted in a greater focus on means testing and the financial contribution people make towards their care.

"The ongoing reforms, coupled with the ageing population and demand for aged care workers certainly present challenges for aged care providers", Colin Osborne, Anglican Care's CEO says.

"As an organisation we are committed to keeping abreast of these changes so that we can ensure we are providing older people with affordable, accessible, flexible and available services when they need them, including providing support to carers.

"Certainly the industry will look different in 2028 than it does in

2018 and at this stage we don't know exactly what all of the changes will be. What we do know is that people increasingly seek to stay at home as long as possible and that people entering residential aged care are doing so with much more complex and chronic conditions," Colin explains.

Over the past few years Anglican Care has experienced a period of growth via the acquisition and development of new services.

Examples of these include: • Acquisition of Great Lakes Aged Care in Bulahdelah, consisting of a residential aged care home and retirement living villas.

• Construction of a dedicated off-site food and laundry facility at Boolaroo.

• Acquisition of Lake Mac Care Services, consisting of East Lake Macquarie Dementia Service at Belmont and Alkira Respite Service at Toronto.

• Construction and commissioning of Kilpatrick Court, Toronto, a state of the art contemporary residential home offering 147 places across a variety of care levels with a central courtyard and café area.

• Acquisition and completion of Northwood Retirement Living at Tenambit.

Currently underway is the redevelopment of C A Brown

Residential Aged Care Home at Booragul. This development will include a café and purpose built Day Therapy Centre, both of which assist in integrating our residential homes with the broader community.

Our project in Gloucester is also progressing with a Development Application currently with Mid Coast Council for a residential aged care home, retirement living villas and community centre.

"The Gloucester community has been very engaged in this development and the introduction of contemporary aged care services into the town.

We have undertaken extensive consultation with the community regarding the planned services", says Colin.

Our Community and Home Care services also continue to evolve and seek innovative ways to support older people wanting to live independently in the community. We are providing an increasing number of home care packages and our two Day Centres offer a range of tailored programs designed to assist people to remain healthy, happy and engaged with life.

"This growth allows us to expand our services across the Diocese and provide care and support to an increasing number of people", says Colin.

"At Anglican Care we are committed to the ideal that life is precious…and that every moment matters, now and into the future".

Vision Day

AT BELMONT NORTH/REDHEAD In July, just over half of the parish of Belmont North Redhead came together to seek God for their Theological Vision for the parish. They began in prayer and contemplation with poems being read stanza by stanza by different voices. Poems such as the song I don't want anything to change by Bonnie Raitt and The Pain of ReCreation by Noel Davies, helped the parish to connect with the feelings deep within that may have pushed back against ideas that sought change. Parker J Palmer's 5 Habits of the Heart helped them to focus on what really mattered for that day, "that we were all there together to seek God's will for our parish," The Rev'd Greg Colby said.

The first session was a Values Auditing exercise that helped identify eight values through which they would seek to base all of their actions and activities: prayer, fellowship, pastoral care, stewardship, effective organisation, honesty, family and faithful servant leadership.

The next session divided the vision seekers into groups and ran a "cafe conversations" style session around the elements of Healthy Parish Ministry as found in the Strategic Plan Workbook. "As a result, we came up with a wide range of specific goals and objectives to lead us into the next stage of our parish life," the Rev'd Greg said.

"The morning sessions focused on what we sensed God is calling us to, and in the afternoon we focused on where God is calling us to – which of our centres will become our thriving bustling new ministry and mission centre?"

Later in the month the parish gathered to vote as a parish on the options that came out of the session.

As part of the day the parish engaged local artist Ben Mitchell to record their vision meeting as a graphic representation. Ben is a local Newcastle Artist and is moving into the world of Graphic Recording – he is brilliant to work with.

The Blue Cross Shop

BUILDING ON THE PAST AND LOOKING TO THE FUTURE The Parish of Taree officially reopened their Parish Shop in a new, larger space on July 28, allowing both the sorting and retail sectors to come together.

The Anglican Blue Cross shop has been an important part of the Taree Parish and the community for many years, having grown from a small beginning in the Parish Hall to a larger retail premises in the central part of the town.

Sorting was done separately in another location where a team of people came together to sort and process the wonderful donations.

The two premises have worked well but it is now time to look towards the future and bring both sections together in a new larger facility that provides the ability to better care for our volunteers, the community and the environment. We are excited about the opportunities that this new direction might provide and are focused on creating a respectful positive environment that allows us to extend Christ's love into the community.

If you are visiting Taree we would love to see you, so please drop into the Blue Cross Shop, 43 Manning Street, Taree, for a chat, a cuppa or perhaps you might even find a bargain. The Opening hours are 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday and 9am – 12 noon Saturday.

A Vibrant New Ministry Centre at Kincumber Commencing just 12 months ago, the vibrant new Ministry Centre at Kincumber was officially opened at a community open day on September 22.

Bishop Peter attended the open day, officially blessing and opening the new Ministry Centre.

Guests were treated to tours of the new facility, as well as kids' activities.

With the assistance of their architects, the parish has designed a facility that will provide a new 200 seat auditorium, flexible social foyer space, improvements to meeting rooms and amenities plus upgrades to parking and the landscaped setting.

The new building will enable the parish to carry out our current ministries and allow for growth in the future in an attractive and safe complex.

CELEBRATING SAMARITANS SHOPS FOR

k e e W p o h S Op The beginning of October is National Op Shop Week. Op shops are fascinating enterprises that provide so much more than a great retail experience; they also operate as microcosms of the community.

There are four Samaritans Shops across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. The shops not only act as an affordable shopping experience for those with limited budgets, but they offer a hub for any person from any walk of life to make a connection, have a conversation or find support.

Given Samaritans wide network of services, it can utilise its shops to assist people in need. Profits from the shops go back into Samaritans community programs across the diocese, and conversely their Emergency Relief centres can offer vouchers to the shops for those people who may be unable to afford clothing or items for their home.

Wallsend shop volunteer Maryanne speaks of the support and friendships she has developed with her fellow volunteers. She also spoke of the conversations she has with

customers, how she likes to brighten their day and connect them with help if they need it.

"I'm a people person, I like to brighten people's day. I just say hi, how are you going, and it could change somebody's life. I don't judge anybody, maybe some people are going through tough times, and you can help them a little bit if they need it by giving them the Samaritans number. It's good they can have a little faith that there's help out there.

I've been volunteering here since about March 2016. The team that I work with are so fun, customers love coming in, they say 'here we are, the right shop' when they come in and they hear us laughing.

I don't like to stand still, I like to keep busy so I like to keep the shop tidy and this place has such a good energy and a good vibe."

Volunteers like Maryanne are the lifeblood of Samaritans Shops. Their joy and tireless commitment make our shops such a lively, welcoming place for all people.

Samaritans extends a warm thank you to its shop volunteers as well as the team who manage Samaritans Shops, Pauline, Mandy and Leslie. Op Shop Week is dedicated to all of you for the dedication and compassion you bring to Samaritans.

A New Start

November 25 is #WhiteRibbonDay. Stand up, speak out and act; take the oath this White Ribbon Day. Samaritans shares a powerful story of resilience and strength about a mother who overcame homelessness and is studying to re-enter the workforce.

In an unhealthy relationship for many years, Natasha describes her marriage as a place filled with darkness.

"As a religious person, I took my marriage seriously. And leaving it was hard.

"His drinking and behaviour kept getting worse. One night as I was cooking dinner he started yelling at me. It was rare for it to happen in front of our two kids."

Natasha describes the look on her daughter's face as the reason she made the decision to leave that night.

"I looked at my daughter (8) and I just saw the pure look of fear on her face.

"That was the tipping point for me.

I picked up my son (2) and asked my daughter to follow me. I told my partner I was just going for a drive.

Bishop Peter blesses Anglican Care Booragul site The Anglican Bishop of Newcastle, The Right Reverend Dr Peter Stuart was joined by the Chairman of Anglican Care, Mr Malcolm McDonald, CEO Colin Osborne, staff and dignitaries, to celebrate the commencement of construction at CA Brown Residential Aged Care Booragul facility on August 20.

The $41 million redevelopment, spearheaded by Project Managers APP and local construction organisation Core Property Group, will expand and improve the care and services available to residents and is expected to be completed by April 2020.

This is an especially exciting development for Anglican Care with the Booragul site Anglican Care's "spiritual home". 60 years ago, CA Brown Village became the first facility in, what was to become one of the Hunter's largest and most trusted Aged Care providers.

The CA Brown Redevelopment will peak with 160 local workers

per day, bringing employment to 1500 people over the course of the two-year construction period.

The redevelopment is a significant investment in the area and further proof of Anglican Care's commitment to the Lake Macquarie area, which has a higher number of over 65's than the state average.

"The redevelopment of the CA Brown site will expand and improve upon the care and services available to residents; this includes 126 single en-suite rooms (18 of those being dementia specific), a purpose-built Day Therapy Centre, cafĂŠ and a number of multi-purpose spaces including a Chapel," said Anglican Care CEO Colin Osborne.

"The facility has been redesigned to provide a new entry to the residential village and newly landscaped surroundings, which separates service vehicles from resident-related traffic movements," he said.

Despite being on the Anglican Care Board for 13 years, this development

is Malcolm McDonald's first since becoming Chair of the group.

"It is projects like this that allow us to build on our wonderful history of care and concern as well as our commitment to provide contemporary high-quality services underpinned

by Christian philosophies," said Mr McDonald.

"It is a period of growth for the organisation and it is exciting to expand our footprint within the Diocese and to be able to provide services to a growing number of older people, both those moving to one of our homes and those we provide services to in the community," he said.

In 2005, CA Brown Village underwent a staged development with new duplex style units, a new community room and a new administration home, but this will be the largest development on the site to date.

Samaritans Launch Youth Complex Mental Health Services This week Samaritans celebrated the launch of Youth Complex Mental Health services in the Hunter at headspace Maitland.

The new early intervention services will aim to meet the needs of young people with, or at risk of, severe mental illness.

In the Hunter, Samaritans who operate headspace Maitland will be delivering services for the Muswellbrook, Upper Hunter and Liverpool Plains LGAs.

Governor of NSW Visits St Paul's, Kurri Kurri

His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley, Governor of NSW, paid a visit to Kurri on September 10 to see how things were progressing with the town's Centenary of Armistice projects.

Governor Hurley was treated to an afternoon tea at St Paul's Anglican Church Hall which also saw performances from the Kurri Public School choir and a stirring retelling of the story of unsung WWI hero Maud Butler by Medowie 5-year-old Elizabeth Kilday.

Governor Hurley said that he was impressed with the work being done in the area for the Centenary of Armistice.

"All of our small communities have looked inside the history and rediscovered a lot that was hidden away," he said. "People are searching their homes and researching relatives and I think it takes away from the large figures we talk about and brings it down to a personal level.

He added that it was heartening to see so many young faces in attendance.

"It's important that there's a renewing of the legacy and perhaps a reinterpretation of the legacy so the youngsters have some meaning to take away from this," Governor Hurley said.

Kurri's Centenary of Armistice events include the recent repatriation to Kurri Public School of Private William Kelly's medals, a mural to heroine Maud Butler, and a recreation by Kurri Kurri Men's Shed of the lost, original school honour roll which was dedicated in 1918.

The visit echoed a similar thanksgiving visit to the same venue in 1918 by Governor Sir Walter Davidson and was a recognition of Centenary of Armistice projects by Kurri Kurri Public School and other community organisations.

Scone Grammar School promotes Mental Health

In conjunction with the upcoming Where There's A Will art competition and their submission to help promote Mental Health Month in October, SGS has embarked on a whole school Art Installation which will showcase every student's top character strength.

In their Weekly Wellbeing lesson, every student from P to Year 12 was presented with a small cardboard tile to create their art piece, which is to be colour coded depending on their top character strength.

Over the next two weeks, all students will work on this whole school project finding their "inner creativity" and furthermore, building strong links between the students across all age groups.

Sea Sunday and Blessing of the Port celebration The annual Sea Sunday and Blessing of the Port celebration took place at Christ Church Cathedral on July 22. Representatives from the Port of Newcastle, Port Waratah Coal Services, Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group, Port Authority New South Wales, Shipping Agents, the Port Welfare Committee and the Sea Cadets joined Dean Katherine and Bishop Peter in leading the celebration.

A wreath was presented by the Sea Cadets in honour of departed seafarers and a blessing was given

by Father Garry Dodd on all those who go down to the sea in ships and occupy their business in great waters and also on the Port of Newcastle and its personnel in all their doings, afloat and ashore.

Symbols of the nautical profession - a line, a sextant, a compass, and the Port of Newcastle Memorial were brought forward by the Sea Cadets. A representative collection of beanies, knitted by members of Anglican parishes and by people from the wider community as gifts for seafarers, was brought forward to be blessed in recognition of this important ministry of our churches, and of the high value placed upon

the beanies by the seafarers themselves.

Since Sea Sunday, a number of pictures from Sunday School children have been sent to the Mission and these are displayed for seafarers to see.

They demonstrate that the community recognises their work, the challenges they face and the personal hardships they endure.

The Mission would like to thank every parish and those individuals who celebrated Sea Sunday in the Diocese and who continue to support us in many, many different ways. We are always grateful for your generosity and depend on your financial giving. Last year we receive $20,000 (down from $25,000 two years ago) which equates to two days a week chaplaincy. Bishop Sonia Attends Blessing of Our Land at Pokolbin

August 26 saw members of the Parish of Mt Vincent and Weston join in the Blessing of Our Land at Pokolbin, in conjunction with clergy and parishioners from the Anglican Parish of Cessnock and the Roman Catholic Parishes of Cessnock and Kurri

Kurri. The proceedings commenced with a smoking ceremony before a themed liturgy which concluded with a blessing by the assembled clergy.

Preacher of the occasion was Bishop Sonia Roulston who reflected on her links with the local district and the

significance of the land in our lives.

On display were dioramas reflecting the indigenous history of the area and the richness of produce, along with an exhibition of Aboriginal art from local artists.

St Alban's Spring Fair puts a smile on everyone's face St Alban's Muswellbrook is hosted its annual Spring Fair this month and the Church is put on more of a spectacle than it ever has before, with the Rev'd Scott Dulley saying they upped the entertainment across all age groups.

The event saw hundreds of people enter the Anglican Church's gates, and partake in the many activities set up for visiting patrons. The petting zoo, face painting, entertainment and, of course, the pony rides were among the most popular attractions.

The Rev'd Scott Dulley was thrilled with how the day went, praising those who came for braving the rain.

He added it was a good sign of community spirit. They managed to raise more than $10,000, which was a great result for the annual event.

Anglican Women Spring Celebrations

Over the week of September 3-7, enthusiastic members of Riding for the Disabled (RDA) spoke at the Spring Celebrations organised

by Anglican Women in the various deaneries of the Diocese. The meetings all started with morning tea, a Communion service, then a speaker from RDA, which will be the recipient of the next Thank You Box collection.

In the diocesan area RDA has groups operating in the Lower Hunter at Raymond Terrace, in the Manning at Rainbow Flat (between Forster and Taree), in the Upper Hunter near Muswellbrook and at Panang on the Central Coast.

Riders are accepted from all disability groups, including those with Cerebral Palsy and Autism mainly children and youth, but also some adults. Individual programs are tailored to suit the wide range and levels of disability. They undertake a range of activities to assist with development and motor skills. The experience also provides many social benefits and increased well-being They are assessed prior to acceptance, with attention to potential benefits, safety, and weight

considerations. The aim is to reach the rider's maximum ability level.

Initially, riders with more severe disabilities are assisted by up to two helpers (side walkers) and a leader.

As the rider's skills and confidence increase, many graduate to the ultimate aim of being able to ride independently. The joy on their faces needs to be seen to be believed!

The costs to run these amazing centres, with their many proven benefits, come from fundraising. For the hard working horses these costs include hay, shoes and hoof trimming (needed every six weeks), feed additives, vaccinations, worming, horse dentist, veterinary visits and Bowen Therapy, plus arena and riding equipment maintenance, paddock upkeep including fertilisation and soil aerating, administration and much more.

Manning deanery met at Wingham, where they heard about the Manning/Great Lakes RDA, which commenced in 1998, initially running on private property and then at the Wingham Showground. It now has a place to call "home" thanks to the generosity of a member who donated land at Rainbow Flat.

At Kotara South, where women from Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Deaneries meet, Judy Edwards was the guest speaker. A physiotherapist and a volunteer with RDA for 18 years, she spoke enthusiastically of their work. With only three paid staff, most of the work at this centre is done by the 120 volunteers.

At Denman they heard of the RDA Upper Hunter which started in 1991.

It is situated in the grounds of St Helier's Correctional Centre on the Sandy Creek Road. Children from the special units of schools in the surrounding areas enjoy their riding days. There is also one adult rider.

They have a 60x20 metre arena plus several smaller arenas and a three bay shade and shelter shed.

The Central Coast Deanery met at Gosford. Their centre commenced activities in the grounds of the Juvenile Justice Centre at Mt Panang in 1980. Facilities at the time were basic and much depended on the weather! They now cater for 120 riders during the school terms and operate six days a week. They relocated to a covered arena in 2000, allowing all weather and all year horse riding therapy for their riders.

Any hope for Palestine now, or ever?

By Doug Hewitt Areej Masoud is a Palestinian Christian born in Bethlehem, living within minutes from the birthplace of Jesus. Like many Palestinians, Areej's family fled to another country because of the challenge of living under Israeli occupation. The daily conflict and lack of freedom to move within the West Bank was too much for a family with young children.

After 10 years of living in Qatar, the family moved back to Palestine.

Living in both places gave Areej a perspective of a normal childhood and an oppressed one.

Masoud believes simply that Muslims, Jews and Christians should be able to live peacefully in the land, as they did for many centuries.

"Before the conflict, Christians, Muslims and Jews were living together. Now because of politics, we have to live separately. We did it before, why not again?" she asks.

"The number of Christians living in Palestine is quickly declining," she said, "because so many have emigrated to escape the sectarian violence." She now has just her immediate family and her maternal grandparents living in Bethlehem, but still faces the stresses of oppression in her own land.

Hoping to find answers to her personal conflict, Areej studied Religious Studies and Psychology at the Catholic Bethlehem University and wrote her dissertation on Zionism

and the Kairos Palestine document, with the supervision of one of the document's authors, Fr Dr Jamal Khader.

"My studies enabled me to manage conflict within myself through a greater understanding of my reality, my faith and most importantly the definition of justice found in the Biblical narrative."

After graduating from Bethlehem University in 2013, Areej then 22, spent a year working as an intern with the Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas in the US. "I wanted to work in charities management and fundraising. Being here in Kansas, I'm more sure about what I want to do," she said at the time.

For her young years Areej has had various job experiences. She started as a substitute Biblical studies teacher at Saint Joseph High school. Currently she works as the Development and Communications Department Co-ordinator at Bethlehem Bible College.

"I always seek opportunities to speak up on behalf of my people and welcome the chance to tell the Palestinian story, which is the same for both Christians and Muslims."

Even though Areej is not directly working with her Religious Studies degree, she is still putting her faith and passion for serving her community into work. She volunteers her time in editing blogs

Areej Masoud on Reconciliation Theology and Theology of the Land. Also, she is the moderator of Christ at the Checkpoint (young adults).

Areej Masoud has been brought to Australia for a speaking tour by the Palestine Israel Ecumenical Network.

She will speak at Jesmond Park Uniting Church, Robert St, Jesmond at 6pm on Monday October 22.

Palestine Israel Ecumenical Network (PIEN) is a network of Australian Christians whose mission is to seek lasting peace and justice for the people of Palestine and Israel. PIEN has around 500 active participants drawn from ten denominations across all states and territories and relates closely to the National Council of Churches in Australia and to the heads of churches in Jerusalem.

A Unique Church Anglican veneration of Our Lady, The Blessed Virgin Mary, known officially by her ancient title Mother of God since the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in AD 431, is an important part of the spiritual life of Anglicanism. Here in the Dioceses there are many who have a particular spiritual attachment to the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially those who are associated with the work of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in England.

The shrine which has Royal Patronage and the support of the Archbishop of Canterbury is well known to many.

On August 15 some of those who have a Marian connection met at St. Stephen's, Adamstown for a special Mass in honour of the Blessed Virgin.

The ceremony, and the supper that followed, was a time of great spiritual fellowship for all concerned.

Bishop Peter stated on his recent visit to the Parish, "St Stephen's was a unique church within the Diocese".

Any who wish to come to the regular Walsingham meetings on the 1st Saturday of each month at 8am followed by breakfast, would be very welcome.

Young Talent Time legend serenades Anglican Care

She was the princess of our television screens in the 70's, and on August 30 Karen Knowles, the Young Talent Time legend, came to Anglican Care's Alkira Respite & Day Therapy Centre in Kilpatrick Court to join residents in music therapy and talk about some of her favourite moments growing up in front of an adoring Australian audience.

While it has been more than 30 years since Karen's time on YTT came to an end, she has continued to forge a music career as a solo recording artist and live performer. She also collaborated and toured with legendary folk group The Seekers for two years.

Karen joined with Anglican Care to deliver their workshop on Music Therapy for Seniors which has a range of health benefits and is an enjoyable and immensely popular activity for Anglican Care's residents and consumers.

Anglican Care's Community Care Services General Manager, Chris Giles said music therapy has scientific benefits in improving people's health and wellbeing.

"Experience has shown us the vast benefits of music therapy for seniors, particularly those suffering the symptoms of dementia, making it an important part of our holistic approach to lifestyle and wellbeing programs," Chris said.

"We were so excited to have Karen join us. She certainly got our residents' endorphins going and had them tapping along to some of their favourite songs."

Karen performed 10 songs including I Feel Good, Sunny Side of the Street, Edelweiss, Silent Night and Bye Bye Blackbird. She also helped them prepare for their own live performance at the annual Anglican Care Sensational Seniors concert in November, where they will perform their very own routine in front of other Anglican Care residents, consumers, families, staff and volunteers. Karen will also be the headline act at this event.

METHOD Step 1: Place cabbage, vinegar and salt in a bowl. Toss to combine. Set aside for 15 minutes.

Step 2: Cook edamame according to packet instructions. Drain. Rinse under cold water. Drain. Remove beans from pods. Place sugar snaps and snow peas in a heatproof bowl. Cover with boiling water. Stand 2 minutes. Drain. Split open sugar snaps. Halve snow peas lengthways.

Step 3: Meanwhile, heat oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Add salmon.

Cook, turning occasionally, for 3 minutes or until salmon is browned. Stir in sesame seeds. Drizzle with honey.

Step 4: Cook rice according to packet instructions. Drain cabbage, reserving 1 tablespoon pickling liquid. Combine pickling liquid and mayonnaise in a bowl.

Divide rice among serving bowls. Top with salmon, pickled cabbage, vegetables, watercress, avocado and cucumber. Drizzle with mayonnaise mixture.

We came to Stockton 1985 – David served as Rector of St Paul's for 12 years – retiring in 1997. We absolutely loved being part of the Stockton Parish, very blessed indeed! We remained on Stockton to retire.

Sadly, David died in 2001. In 2005 my daughter, Amy, and I moved to Canberra to be close to family and to this day treasure many fond memories of our time on Stockton.

This book is a compilation of journals written over many years. These messages started soon after I had attended a seminar in the midnineties on Communion with God and How to Hear His Voice by Dr Mark Virkler.

There was a desire in me to know God in a deeper way by seeking a closer relationship with him and also to find out what his plan and purpose was for my life, and to see the fulfilment of his healing promises to take place in the life of my daughter Amy who was born with several disabilities.

After the seminar, I started putting into practice what we had been suggested to do. During my quiet times with the Lord, I would sit with pen and paper ready to receive from him, knowing that his Spirit was willing to convey to me what was on his heart. I heard no voice, but knew what to write as "whisper-like" thoughts would come and at times, my pen would just flow with words of encouragement to strengthen my faith and remind me that he is faithful to his Word.

So while I was seeking the Lord to see my desires fulfilled, he also showed me his heart and what he desires. He loves us and is vitally interested in every detail of our lives and he longs for us to seek him and spend time in his presence and also

This is not a story about me nor about Amy even though I have dedicated this book to her. In fact, I have never had any aspirations to be writing a book but over time it occurred to me that even though these words were given mainly to me personally to help me work out my purpose and destiny amidst the challenges of life, I felt that these also could be shared with others as we are all on a journey of faith, though our issues or trials might differ. It then made me consider having these published.

This was confirmed to me in a most unexpected way, out of which the decision to go ahead was made.

The book contains 17 chapters with an average of seven readings per chapter with corresponding scripture quotes. Some of the headings are My Plan For You, Seek My Presence, Walk By Faith, Life In The Word, I Am Your Strength, My Life-Giving Spirit, Taking Authority, and Be An Overcomer.

As you find yourself dipping into these pages, may you be inspired by the Holy Spirit to receive encouragement, hope and strength, so to continue your faith's journey and fulfil your Kingdom destiny that he has purposed for you!
