Luke Wright –The Remains of Logan Dankworth

The Remains of Logan Dankworth is the third and final instalment of Luke Wright’s trilogy of verse plays. Set in 2016, with the Brexit vote on the horizon, it centres on themes of privilege and trust between married couples, between voters and politicians and trust and truth in the media.

As part of an extensive national tour that runs to July the show can be seen at Norwich Arts Centre on 23 February. Logan Dankworth is a newspaper columnist and Twitter warrior. As the referendum looms he is determined to be in the fray of the biggest political battle for years. Meanwhile, Logan’s wife wants to leave London for a better place to raise their daughter. As tensions mount at home and across the nation, something is set to be lost forever. Can we ever learn to trust each other again?

Luke expanded ‘This is the most complex and one of the most mature things I’ve written. A strong personal story is set against a backdrop of political upheaval. Logan is approaching middle age, he’s excited by the febrile nature of British politics while trying to hold things together at home.’

‘While Logan is firmly in the Remain camp, the play isn’t. It doesn’t dissect the rights and wrongs of Brexit, more the divisions it spawned - as the politics plays out in

the background, what happens when the trust between two sides breaks down completely?’

Bungay resident Wright has taken his poetry around the world to countries as diverse as China and Australia. He is a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe, Latitude, Glastonbury and national radio. His awards include a Fringe First, three Saboteur Awards and The Stage Award for Acting Excellence. His poetry has been voiced by actors including Robert Lindsay and David Soul.

Luke’s audiences are a truly diverse bunch often ranging in age from teenagers to those in their 80’s and apart from his own shows he can often be found performing as special guest of Dr John Cooper Clarke or as MC for rock band The Libertines.

With the involvement of many artists, thinkers, activists and creative partners, Norwich Theatre venues will host a range of events and creative experiences exploring the climate crisis and presenting ways in which all of us can influence our collective future.

Creative Matters: Climate Stories is a year-long season, with performances, films, exhibitions, workshops and events that aim to stimulate discussion and make connections through creativity.

Spare a thought for the lad with the small bedroom at Balmoral… Mr Anonymity strikes again with a book and a Netflix series with Me Again. I suppose the next career move is a few weeks in the jungle with an Eastenders extra or someone who props up the bar in the Woolpack……or maybe if he plays his cards right (Me Again knows all about that) he could reach the heady heights of Strictly!! Or maybe get his skates on with Holly and Phil. Whatever happened to the farm in Emmerdale?

As for heady heights, Gareth’s failure to include Jack Hawkins in the squad came home to roost with a quarter final exit. Still if you are keeping your top goal scorer on the bench until the last 5 minutes against France then these things happen. We must look forward to the Euros next year for our next few weeks of torment. In Germany this time so will they be able to load up the panzers and get their penalty shootout trousers on for an almost inevitable clash with our plucky lads!

Like Qatar, Christmas came and went with the usual lack of decent TV but at least our new leader Rishi “I’ll have Twix” Sunak was on hand to bring cheer to the poor and needy with uplifting questions such as “are you in business?” to which the reply must be “No I’m overdrawn at the foodbank at the moment what about you and the wife?” Poor and needy Boris seems to have played his cards right and has been given a £20m house to live in.

What is Qigong?

So what is Qigong? It is a question I am often asked, usually right after 'how do you say that?' Qigong (pronounced Cheegong) is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. The world premiere tour of the stage version of the hit Peter James novel Wish You Were Dead heads to Norwich Theatre Royal. You may know the story of Detective Superintendent Roy Grace from the gripping ITV series Grace, with almost nine million viewers tuning in to watch the primetime drama. Series two returned to TV screens in spring 2022, with five more episodes being the most watched programme across all channels on each of the Sundays they were broadcast. A third series is now in the works.

Adapted exclusively for the stage, Wish You Were Dead will arrive at Norwich Theatre Royal 20 – 25 Feb, featuring TV favourite DSI Roy Grace. This will be the sixth stage adaptation of James’ best-selling novels - making it the most successful crime thriller stage franchise since Agatha Christie.

The twist in Wish You Were Dead is that Roy played by George Rainsford, is on holiday in France with his wife, Cleo (Giovanna Fletcher), and their baby. Cleo hopes that she will finally get her husband all to herself for a few days and away from his crime-solving exploits.

But their dream escape turns out to be the holiday from hell, as the past comes back to haunt them.

Speaking about the show, author Peter James said: “I have always loved live theatre, so it’s been thrilling to watch how much audiences around the UK have loved the plays. Theatre and the escapism it provides us all is so important – particularly now. Inside the safe cocoon of a theatre, audiences love to be on the edge of their seats and sometimes shocked, always hoping when that final curtain falls, order will have been restored and the world will seem just a little bit of a better place.

“I am incredibly grateful for the support regional theatres and their audiences have shown our plays and it will be fantastic to see another one of my books being adapted for the stage – the sixth one!”

The annual competition has been launched by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) to find the new logo for the 45th Norwich Beer Festival, taking place from Monday 23rd October until Saturday 28th October 2023.

The deadline for logo entries is 11pm Monday 20th February 2023 and Norwich & District CAMRA are looking for innovative designs depicting a dragon of some form.

Craig Harmer, Festival Organiser, said “The festival logo is a critical element that binds many aspects of the festival together. We always get a wide variety of designs and styles submitted. We're looking forward to receiving them”.

As always, the essential element is that a dragon must be included within the design, although abstract is acceptable. Also, a maximum of five solid colours (four is preferable) can be used, including any black or white parts of the design. Entrants are asked to specify "Adult" or "Under-18" and include their name, contact details and age (if under-18) within the email. Judging will by organised by the festival organisers and the winner will receive £100 along with a selection of merchandise featuring their logo at the festival. There will be two runner-up prizes of complementary festival tickets, and the best under-18 entrant will receive a voucher.

All entries must be in a standard image format (JPEG, TIFF, PNG, GIF, BMP, or PDF). Vector files are welcome as long as a standard image format is included. Hand drawn entries are acceptable, but must be scanned or photographed. Multiple entries are also acceptable. All entries (and queries) must be emailed to logo@norwichbeerfestival.org.uk and be received before 11pm Monday 20th February 2023. All email entries will be acknowledged.

Meet the delightful donkey duo, Wiggins and Wacko! Both donkeys arrived separately at Redwings Horse Sanctuary in August 2012, and although neither knew the other, both were united in loneliness. Wiggins was abandoned by his owner in a livery yard, leaving the landowner to care for him. Meanwhile, Wacko lived alone with just his owner for company after the yard where he was living was forced to close. At Redwings, we understand donkeys are not wellsuited to living alone, so both lonely donkeys were offered a home at the Sanctuary, and happily, the pair are now the best of friends!

You can sponsor Wiggins and Wacko for yourself or a loved one for just £2 a month and the donkey double act will send you two updates a year, plus update their online blogs with insights into their day-to-day life. Last year I gave Spanish winter radishes a go, and I’m hooked. They were really easy to grow to the size of an egg, even during the deep freeze we experienced before Christmas, and are deliciously…, well, radishy. Some people say they should be peeled and boiled but I like them raw and grated in salads for a little reminder of summer favours in the middle of winter. Last year’s Musquee de Provence squash grew to monster size and made a fantastic alternative to tomatoe sauce, but I spent two whole days up to my elbows in squash preparation and debris, followed by a deep clean of the kitchen. So this year I’m trying the much smaller Uchiki Kuri and Orange Hokkaido, partly to see whether there is actually any discernible difference between them. I’m also giving Blue Banana another go. This

Totally new to me will be root chervil which is supposed to taste like a mixture of sweet chestnuts and parsnip. It has a massively long growing season and won’t be ready until December. I’m hoping I’m not going to lose the label, or interest, when the greenhouse is bulging and I don’t know where to put everything. I’m also going to experiment with black cumin in the fower border, Asturian tree cabbage instead of the disappointing collard greens, and Melothrie mini cucumbers along the garden fence. However you do it, happy seed choosing and a successful new growing year to you all.

Dipples Jewellers opens new store in Bury St Edmunds Dipples Jewellers opens new store in Bury St Edmunds

Dipples fine jewellers based in Norwich, recently moved into the shop premises vacated by Thurlow Champness watchmaker and jeweller in Bury St Edmunds.

For over 270 years, 14 Abbeygate Street in Bury St Edmunds, has been occupied by a jeweller. Since 1901 Thurlow Champness and Son occupied the building, until the recent retirement of managing director Trevor Salt. However, in early summer this year Mr Salt reached out to Mr Ellis from Dipples to enquire whether Dipples would be interested in taking over the lease, which indeed they were, with the new Dipples Bury store officially launching just in time for Christmas 2022.

Chris Ellis, managing director and fifth generation to run Dipples said: “When Trevor Salt approached us to expand our existing business into Suffolk, it seemed like the perfect fit for Dipples, given our similar history and brand. It would have also been a real shame not to continue the heritage of a jewellery business occupying the building at no 14”. He added: “Initially the plan will be to continue with business as usual, including re-employing most members of staff from the existing team at Thurlow Champness and Son. A rebrand to Dipples is necessary, but that’s about it”. Prior to the takeover, Dipples had

previously worked with Thurlow Champness as a repair partner, so a past relationship between the two jewellery businesses has existed.

Dipples will grow from having two Norfolk stores in Norwich and Dereham, to three stores including Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.

The Dipples brand was founded in Essex in 1878 by George Henry Dipple. The brand then moved to Norfolk with the branch opening around 1895 in Swan Lane, Norwich where it has remained as one of the county’s most prestigious jewellers ever since. The Dereham branch was opened in 1963.

Dipples in Norwich is known for having one of the best ranges of fine jewellery and watches including selected diamond rings, with some pieces containing D coloured diamonds, which are the purest colour diamonds you can find anywhere in the world.

There can be a lot to think about when someone dies, at what is almost certainly a very emotional time. Usually, it is the Executors appointed under a will who are responsible for dealing with legal matters. If there isn’t a will in place it falls to the ultimate beneficiaries of the estate (who take on the role as Administrators).

Executors must perform their duties in accordance with the terms of the will and various legal statutes. Executors (and Administrators) can face personal financial liability for any omissions or mistakes they make. Perhaps harshly, such liability can arise even if they are unaware of a particular duty or action that needs to be taken.

Some of the main duties of an Executor/ Administrator include:

• Paying all the deceased’s debts and liabilities where the estate is solvent. An Executor/Administrator can be held personally liable for any unpaid debts, including those of which they are unaware. This ongoing personal liability can be removed if certain legal procedural steps are taken.

• Completing and submitting Inheritance Tax paperwork to HMRC and making payment of any Inheritance Tax due. They can face personal penalties imposed by HMRC if they do not do this thoroughly or within certain time limits.

• Identifying and dealing with any claims against the estate, for example from creditors or disappointed family members. They should delay distributing the estate until all the relevant time limits have expired or they can again face personal liability.

• Executors are often also appointed as Trustees, for example where a Will dictates that money should be held for a beneficiary until they reach a certain age. Hill Community Garden friends old & new & some yet to be, hopefully!

Currently, with the state of the world and our lives, as they are at present, many of us are probably looking ahead with fear & dread and seeking escapism. We may shut ourselves away and tie ourselves to screens, or perhaps instead choose to escape to one of the many magnificent green spaces we are lucky enough to have here in Norwich, including Grapes Hill Community Garden. This year we hope to offer you everything we have done before plus more. The Community Roots sessions will continue fortnightly throughout the Winter months, on Wednesday evenings at Norwich Art Shop (5.30-7pm), including activities such as Linoprinting, Aromatherapy, Seasonal Quizzes & Nature themed talks. (Booking required). In the Spring these will be returning to the garden as weekly sessions, until our funding for these ends, though hopefully we may secure more to continue.

At the end of January our new raised bed tenants will be filling their beds with fresh compost, ready for the year ahead.

Wishing a Happy 2023 to our Grapes

’s Richard Penguin’s Musical Triangle Musical Triangle

OZRIC TENTACLES & GONGEPIC. Sharing the headline spot festival favourites Ozric Tentacles opened the night with a set steeped in spacey synths and Hillage and Hawkwind inspired elongated guitar riffs notably on ‘Blooperdome’ and ‘Erpland’ courtesy of main man Ed Wynne. Accompanied by psychedelic visual backdrops it’s clear to see, and hear, why they are popular with crowds flocking to the leftfield stages at Glastonbury. Gong are.. well Gong, but not entirely. Given Daevid Allen’s blessing to keep the name and band going before his passing, and now fronted by Kavus Torabi they delve into the classic 70s era in moderation. On the night this came in the form of the hypnotic ‘Master Builder’ from ‘You’, with the later collaboration ‘Rejoice’ being the only other nod to the past. The epic ‘Forever Re-occurring’ from 2019’s post Allen album ‘The Universe Also Collapses’ captures the sound and spirit of the bands past but also nods towards King Crimson as part of a set less space rock imbued, lacking synths, but a more raw edged guitar and experimental sax sound than previously. Quite a coup for Epic who are also putting Steve Hillage on on the 22nd March playing tracks from 4 of his classic 70s albums namely ‘Fish Rising’, ‘Green’, ‘L’, and ‘Motivation Radio’ with Gong playing as his backing band, and the Utopia Strong supporting. Many who were at that gig were also at a packed out PSYCHEDELIC CIRCUS night at THE BRICKMAKERS in December to celebrate the solstice and organiser Cosmo’s 600th birthday gig!! His own band BEHIND THE SUN created a cosmic wall of sound with Rob and Andy sparring on guitars over a wash of

synth sounds from Shep, and incessant and insistent urgent rhythms from Cosmo and Kev enhanced by circus performers, and tunes that build to a crescendo. Well worth seeing. THE FOREIGN LOCALS have a hint of Gogol Bordello about them with many an upbeat sing-along song embracing Klezmer and involving the audience especially on ‘Ace Of Spades’. Most entertaining. Psychedelic Circus is back at The Brickmakers on Wednesday 15th March. Line up TBC. Good luck to new landlady and landlord Claire and Dale. BROOKS WILLIAMS & DAN WALSH CORNCUTTERS LOUIS MARCHESI- Two extremely fine musicians Dan’s banjo playing was the perfect musical foil for Brooks guitar lines and vice versa. Opening with old time ‘Church Street Blues’ from the repertoire of Norman Blake showcased Brooks soaring vocals and robust guitar playing and Dan’s fine finger picking. Trading riffs, and telling stories they each took turns to play originals as well with Dan’s ‘Paper Jam’ highlighting his fast fluent playing, and Brooks ‘Tornado Smith’ lyrically recalling possibly the worlds first Wall of Death rider. Separately talented together superb. Corncutter promotions are on facebook.

GURANFOE- GUMBO GUMBO- The follow up to their highly acclaimed ‘Sum of Erda’ album ‘Gumbo Gumbo’ opens frantically on ‘Aravalli Wood’ with the pace only sporadically letting up as all 5 tracks seemingly and seamlessly blend into one. Fuzzed guitars give way to sweet sounding and serene sax and flute lines on ‘Et Alias’ taking us from Crimson like moments to Caravan circa early 70s delivered by a band of mid 20 something’s. Flutes float over jagged and fuzzed guitars on ‘Indigo Moon’ and ‘To The Sun and odd time signatures as tunes build, descend and build again all culminating in a dynamic conclusion taking in bits of early Yes yet equally with a knowledge of Miles, Mingus

and Mercury Rev on ‘Django’. Ahead of, or behind the times, who knows. Well worth investigating. FLAT WHITE- ZEITGEIST from the pens of Mr Cole-Wilkin and Mr Rix comes an album steeped in satire, contempt for the current Government, and right wing media. Sloganeering is savaged on opener ‘Zeitgeist 1’ and ‘Dumb It Down’ while similarly its effect in persuading many to vote Tory in 1999 surfaces on ‘Meet The Sleazy’s’ and ‘Mugs’. ‘Party Animals’ pours scorn upon those who danced in Downing street while many mourned, ‘Pigs’ references both Orwell and Citizen Smith, while Brexit takes a bashing on ‘Sunlit Uplands’. Elsewhere Mr C-W’s brush with political correctness at a gig, fighting in the name of religion, and futile phone calls come into sharp focus. Angry yet amusing in equal amounts.

FUTURE RADIO-Sad to say that I have stepped down from broadcasting after almost 17 years. Thanks to Future and to everyone who tuned in. It was fun.
