An Angles Theatre RATz production

by

John Godber

This amateur production of “April in Paris” is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd.

RATz production

John Godber wrote this play “April in Paris” as part of the Hull Festival in 1992. Redundant Al is festering at home in an effort to keep himself alert, he has turned his plastering skills to acrylic art work. Bet works in a shoe shop and is frustrated because she and her husband spend too much time together. His Protestant work ethic has been replaced by a childish demand for her attention and they have developed rubbing each other up the wrong way into an exquisite art form. One very unexpected and lucky day, Al and Bet win one night in Paris as part of a “romantic break” competition – a chance to get Al and Bet to experience European travel for the first time. The trip changed their lives! This Angles RATz production will entertain you and give you an intriguing insite into relationships!! BOOK EARLY TICKETS at £10 Suitable for all ages

JM Barrie’s timeless tale of the boy who refused to grow up is reborn as a spectacular musical with music and lyrics by Stiles & Drewe and a book by the late Willis Hall. London Town is strangely ill-at-ease. Rumours abound that babies have gone missing from their perambulators and, as darkness falls, city workers hurry home to their families. Peter Pan rescues the Darling family’s children by whisking them beyond the stars to his island where there are “no tedious distances between one adventure and the next”. “The tunes escalate the magic.... and makes the already brilliant J. M. Barrie story all the more sublime.” Yorkshire Evening Post.

1793

The Wisbech theatre The end of the 18th century saw the rise of small provincial theatres. Actor-managers of the more popular touring companies constructed theatres in towns within their touring circuits. Mr Robertson, manager of the Lincoln touring circuit, funded the building of the Wisbech Theatre in 1793. The Wisbech Theatre would For 53 years, until 1846, the Robertson family put have looked similar to the on several successful productions in Wisbech. The picture above when it was Wisbech Museum has a number of playbills from this first built in 1793. period to illustrate the range of events the Robertsons (Photo: Cloud Nine Photography) introduced to the Wisbech Theatre.

William Macready, a celebrated London actor, was encouraged to perform in the Wisbech Theatre to support flagging sales. This picture shows him in the role of Virginius (one of the playbills on the other page). Macready was born in 1793 - the year the Wisbech Theatre was built.

In 1837, James and Caroline Hill, local philanthropists & parents of Octavia Hill, built a school for under privileged children, in front of the Wisbech Theatre. This building is now used as a bar, rehearsal room and box office for the theatre.

Some playbills advertising Wisbech Theatre events in the early 1800s.

1978

The Angles Theatre company created a new arts centre for Wisbech

In 1977, a newly formed acting group were looking for a base to rehearse in. They had formed a theatre company to tour Shakespeare’s plays and they called themselves the Angles Theatre Company. Without any notion of the vast history behind the building the group negotiated a deal with the Christian Spiritualist Church, who owned the theatre building, to lease it for a rehearsal space. When the Angles Theatre Company realised what they had leased they enthusiastically set about returning the building to its former glory and more. They also, with Town Council support, purchased the front building. Wisbech‘s little theatrical gem would not be here today had it not been for the Angles Theatre Company in 1978.

The Angles Theatre Wisbech is the eighth oldest working theatre in the country and aims to provide you with the best in professional and amateur entertainment.
