A New Start for Aireys Inlet Primary By Mary Bremner
When Aireys Inlet students returned to school at the end of January, the building may have looked familiar, but they were actually walking into a brand new school. Following requests from the community, the Aireys Inlet Primary School has demerged from the LorneAireys Inlet P-12 College, to form a stand-alone school. In the 1990s, the Aireys Inlet Primary School was suffering falling enrolments and became a target of the Victorian Government’s rationalisation of schools, under Premier Jeff Kennett. During this time the state education budget was slashed and many schools were forced to close. The Aireys Inlet community was sold the idea that being part of a larger school would provide better educational outcomes and greater opportunities for teachers. While there were some successes, the difficulty of creating a shared school identity with a common vision across
