Starfish Nippers Shine at Anglesea By Liz Clark
For many families, a vital component of their summer holiday is to take part in Nipper training at the beach. Local residents and families from all around Victoria arrive in Anglesea to begin the program immediately after Christmas. It's almost an extension of Christmas festivities, as 600 youngsters arrive at the Surf Life Saving Club, meet up with old friends, or tentatively approach new families, and prepare for early morning starts to learn about water safety, surf skills and teamwork throughout the January period. For the Surf Club, this requires an enormous amount of organisation, volunteers' generosity and hard work, but they are never short of enthusiastic helpers who are well-trained and keen to meet their new charges. Community Houses are for Everyone
Five years ago, Janet Jones, a Surf Life Saving Club member and work experience co-ordinator for children with special needs, initiated the Starfish program with a team at the Anglesea Surf Lifesaving Club. The specially-designed program was developed to enable children who previously found it difficult to participate in mainstream Nippers because of physical or intellectual disability or a range of learning difficulties.
