The award honours the work of Chris Carson, who was the driving force behind the fireguard program. When they moved to Aireys Inlet from the Goulburn Valley, they went to a public meeting held by the CFA. Not knowing what was the best thing to do in the event of a bushfire, they went to discover more from the fire experts. It turned out to be an important entry into learning and understanding the need for preparing their property against potential bushfires, including removing high risk vegetation from around the house and protecting against ember attack, the most common reason for loss of houses in a

That person then passes on the message as accurately as possible and so on until the originator receives the message back.’ Barbara and Dennis found that the members needed several practice runs to learn how to use the system well by keeping the message brief, accurate and clear. CFGs have many beneficial effects for their members. While a major positive is to provide support from the other members, education has a vital role to play too. CFG members are kept informed of the latest policies and procedures as knowledge is growing over time. Members receive reminders about what they need to be doing and learn new strategies about fire survival. Being reminded about your written fire plan is something that Dennis was very clear about.
