The site that I chose to analyze is Pak Khlong Talad (also known as The Flower Market).

In my project I collected 3 different elements and used them to create different objects in my experiment phase. Lastly, I designed an artifact that is an public area that works as a landmark for people who come visit, yet also being used by the vendors who want to transport flowers across the canal.

Pak Khlong Talad (also known as The Flower Market) started from being a floating market to a fish market. After time, fruits, vegetables, and flowers were also being sold, so it became a normal market until today. Buying flower at pak khlong talad is very common, there are virety of flowers to choose and are very fresh and cheap, so it became the most well known for selling flowers.

After interviewing vedors at the flower market, I found out that they sell the most when there are school activities, or when tourist visits. When flowers are placed together they become very pretty, so the flower market is a very common place for tourist or even Thai people to go take pictures. However, not many people want to visit a market during a pandemic and school are closed. When the flowers are not sold they need to be thrown away. So to adapt themself with the situation, instead of throwing flowers away, they dry them.

I chose to doccument this shop because they built bars infront of their shop to not only use it as a place to dry flowers, but also works as decoration. This shop became unique and memorable for people who passed by.

There are 3 different routine vendors do with flowers once they are imported to their shop. They can sell them, throw them away if they weren’t sold, or lastly, hang them on bars or rope to dry them.

So the three elements I chose to collect are bars, rubbish bin, and dry flowers

For my experiment phase, I decided to start by using different mateials to create bars.

Next, since bars are in layers, I added more layers to them. Even if they now have more layers, they still look the same no matter what side you are looking at. Moreover, to represent bars evenmore, some parts of the object are still see through.

Same with this one, even if the layers are a bit tilted, some parts are still see through.

I was inspired by the different shape of rubbish bin with garbage inside of it since the bins at the flower market are usually anything that would work as a container to hold something in it. I created plaster models by combining the full shape of containers that I traced out, and the sense of see-throughness from bars.

Then, I splattered 4 most common colours for dry flowers on them to represent flowers on bars.

Lastly, I stacked them up into 5 different designs to represent the layers on bars.

For my last element which are dry flowers, I used the method of bending and twisting to create dry flower’s shape from metal wires.

I kept the idea of shapes and used metal wires to create flowers in 4 different designs.

I decided to place my artifact on top of a canal that no one is using. Since the flower market is more like an area rather then a specific place, it’s hard to pin point where is the begining or the end of it. Moreover, the flower market is already so crowded, placing my artifact on top of a canal at the edge of the flower maret, connecting it to the other side I think is quite appropriate.

The flower market is a tourist spot. However, there’s nothing to represent the flower market other than flowers. The flower market also have no public area for people to sit and relax eventhough it is often used to organised several events. So I decided to create a place that could be use as a public area and also work as a landmark for people who come visit, yet also could be use to transport for vendors who want to carry flowers across the canal.

While redefinding, I wanted my artifact to be more organic to continue from my plaster models from the experiment phase. Something very unique about plants are their cells, so I used the shape of root’s cell under a microscope to complete my artifact.

Looking at it from the top, you would see the cell’s shape. The shade are removeable once you don’t need them, but they also represent something very unique about Thailand. In Thailand there are flowers that represent each day of the week, so I extracted their colours to use it as the colour of the shades.
