Welcome From the World Trials President Earl of Lonsdale, World Trials President

I am delighted to welcome you all to the Lowther Estate here in Cumbria for the 2011 World Sheep Dog Trials, Food & Country Festival. This is the first time this wonderful event has been held in England and I am extremely proud that the ISDS has done me, and Cumbria, the honour of acting as your host. You are all most welcome. As some of you may be aware I am very fond of dogs myself. I have eight at home of which two are Border Collies and great companions they are too.

Everything of course starts with the parade through the streets of Penrith. This will be led by the Penrith Town Band, the Countess and I will follow in a horse drawn carriage driven by my good friend George Bowman, a 19-times World Carriage Driving Champion, and we will be followed by all 240 competing dogs and their handlers. I understand that at least some of the handlers will be wearing national costume, and that the team members will be carrying their national flags. I am really looking forward to what should be a wonderfully colourful spectacle that will truly set the scene for what is to come in the four days that follow. As well as the Trials themselves there will be a Country Festival marquee which will incorporate a 'Live Craft Village,' in which experts in traditional country crafts and skills will be working; a Food Festival to showcase some of the best local produce the county has to offer, and, an animal marquee which will house some of our Cumbrian breeds, like the Herdwick and Rough Fell sheep of which we are rightly so proud. In addition there will be a full programme of events in the Display Arena which looks like being a real hive of activity throughout all four days.

I was delighted to learn recently that television coverage has been secured with programmes going out each evening on More4 TV to show the day’s events at the Trials, not to mention the filming for part of the BBC’s Countryfile programme on the Friday and an appearance by BBC TV’s Matt Baker and Gus Dermody from ‘One Man and His Dog’.

4

The local committee has done a remarkable job in pulling all of this together and I would like to congratulate each and every one of them. I am really looking forward to what should be a fantastic few days and of course to welcoming you all to this wonderful corner of England.

To you all I would like to say - relax, enjoy the scenery and hospitality that awaits, and to the competitors the very best of luck to each and every one of you and may the best man or woman win!

l a n o ti a rn te In e th m o fr s g in et re G Sheep Dog Society

Jim Easton, MBE — Chairman, International Sheep Dog Society

It is a delight for me to welcome you all to the 2011 World Sheep Dog Trials, held at the beautiful Lowther Estate. We are indebted to the Lowther Family for their kind permission to use the estate and work in partnership with the ISDS on this great event. I wish to express my thanks especially to Mr Tim Longton, Mr Nigel Davis, Mr John Palmer, Miss Clare Savins and Mr Richard Price, plus many others on the organising committee. It is their hard work and endeavour, supported by a great team, that has brought us all here today. We are all very grateful for the financial assistance of all the sponsors listed in this programme, whose support has enabled it all to take place.

The International Sheep Dog Society has played a key role in developing the world sheepdog community. Some 36 years ago I was delighted to be involved in giving demonstrations and training seminars first in the Netherlands and then many other Continental European countries. The purpose was to show the intelligence and working ability of our ISDS Border Collie. From these small beginnings has grown a strong European and World sheepdog community.

I express my thanks to all who have contributed to bring us here today, and wish the very best to all handlers and dogs at this great World Championship.

This World Trial also represents a farewell event for the ISDS Chief Executive, Norman Lorton. Norman retires on 30th September and his successor, Simon West, who is here at these World Trials, takes over the following day.

Norman took over from Philip Hendry in April 2001 and immediately had responsibility for steering the Society through the difficult period of the national foot-and-mouth crisis. The Society survived, and through Norman’s foresight, working with two senior Welsh officers, he spearheaded the first ISDS World Trials in 2002 at Bala. From that success followed each of the triennial World Trials.

Norman Lorton — Chief Executive, International Sheep Dog Society

This 2011 event is the fourth World Trial to be staged by the International Sheep Dog Society, continuing a very successful and popular format. Here you will see 240 dogs showing their very best, working in partnership with 205 different handlers from 23 nations. All have had to succeed in national selection to gain a place on the entry list, and all have had to work hard to arrive here ready for competition over four days.

This sheepdog trial is not a race between dogs and sheep – it is about showing the care, skill and dedication of a man or woman working with a dog to look after the flock as he, or she, has for hundreds of years. This World Trial is a culmination of one of the International Sheep Dog Society’s objectives – to bring the world together to support and enjoy this wonderful dog, and find the very best there is.

The Trials Committee

The final authority for the competition at this World Trial rests with the ISDS Trials Committee. The members are:

Chairman, Jim Easton; English President, Tim Longton; Welsh President, Malcolm Ellis; Scottish President, Wullie Cook; and Irish President, Con McGarry. Assisted by Secretary, Norman Lorton. Malcolm Ellis

Tim Longton

Although it is the local committee who do all the hard work staging this event, it is Norman and his team in Bedford who plan the entry of all 240 competing dogs, and then oversee all the Judging and results service. The ISDS is today a strong and successful organisation and we are all very grateful for his ten years of leadership and management. Please join me in thanking Norman for his many contributions to the success of the World Trial and the ISDS. We wish him all the best and good health.

Welcome Nigel Davis, Chairman of the Trials Organising Committee

It is a great honour to be invited

to act as Chairman for such a prestigious event as the World Trials and I am most grateful to Tim Longton, our ISDS English President, for providing me with this wonderful opportunity.

It is fair to describe the World Trials as the World Cup and Olympic Games of the sheep dog trialling world rolled into one. The very best of the best from all corners of the globe will be competing here in Cumbria and it will be a tremendous accolade for the person who is crowned World Champion on the evening of Sunday 18th September - the very pinnacle of ac hievement for both sheep dog and handler.

In addition to the Trials themselves, there is a full programme of events in our Food and Country Festival Marquees and Display Arena. Each evening to help everyone relax there will be live entertainment and food available on site. The music will range from local ‘fiddlers’ to the highly regarded Soul Survivors who will be appearing on Saturday evening. I am also hoping that some of the dog handlers can be persuaded to display their undoubted musical talents as well on Friday evening! Time will tell.

An event of this magnitude takes a huge amount of time and hard work to organise and I would like to thank each and every one of the superb committee it has been my privilege and pleasure to work with for all their efforts. I would also like to thank the Earl and Countess of Lonsdale for their advice, assistance and support which has been so freely given throughout, our judges, stewards, volunteers and last, but certainly by no means least, our sponsors for their incredible generosity. Thank you all.

To each and every one of you a very warm welcome to the World Trials, Food and Country Festival 2011. Relax, enjoy the wonderful scenery and hospitality that awaits you, and the competition and other events that have been provided for your enjoyment. I hope you all head home on Sunday evening with some wonderful memories of your time spent with us here in Cumbria.

Tim Longton, English President of the ISDS and Head of the Local Organising Committee Welcome to this wonderful part of the world – the heart of Cumbria on the edge of England’s Lake District. This is true sheep dog country. The quality of our venue for these World Trials is already recognised having successfully staged the International Trials in 2009.

We hope to build on that success. Over the next four days, 240 competitors from 23 nations will pit their wits against North Country Mules. This represents the ultimate global test for handlers and their trusted dogs. On Sunday, one of those teams will become the World Champion. The honour will be richly deserved – so too will the solid gold whistle that goes with it! While competitive trialling is at the heart of this great event, we can also promise non-stop support action, entertainment and excitement in the form of our Food & Country Festival, providing something of interest for all the family – young and not so young.

We have also pulled off something of a coup in securing high profile television coverage for the World Trials through live event and sport specialists North One Television, who will utilise high-tech production techniques, including High Definition, super slo-mo, fence and pen cameras and dog and sheep telemetry. More4 will exclusively broadcast the World Trials, providing nine hours of coverage throughout the event – a two-hour programme at 7pm each day, plus an event highlights show. This will not only provide a massive boost to the World Trials, but also the Cumbrian region and the world of sheep dog trialling in general.

Of course, events such as this take many, many hundreds of hours to organise and stage, and while it is impossible to thank every single individual involved, I would like to pay a special tribute to the local organising committee, who have worked tirelessly for the past 18 months and more to organise what is one of the greatest countryside events of the year. You will see their details in this programme. Thank you one and all. My thanks also go to the Earl and Countess of Lonsdale for their kind permission to stage the Trials at Lowther and who have given us their whole hearted support from the outset, and, of course, all our valued sponsors, without whose support this event would not have been possible, in particular our main sponsor Ceri Rundle, of CSJ Specialist Canine Feeds. To all the dog handlers I say: Run well, run true! To all our visitors, I say: Enjoy the superb spectacle, the amazing atmosphere, savour this wonderful area – stay awhile and visit. Let the 2011 World Trials, Food & Country Festival begin!

P ro gra m m e G uide

There are 23 Nations represented by the names of handlers and dogs you will find listed. All the world’s countries, where there is a recent history of sheepdog handling, were invited to attend. The numbers from each nation were set by the ISDS and broadly indicate the level of activity in each country. There were some that could not travel because of the UK quarantine regulations and other, new sheepdog nations still working up to this standard of competition. The handlers and dogs have been ranked by their home organisation from qualifying competition in 2010. Therefore, for most nations, these represent the best.

It is possible that a handler appears twice in the programme – i.e. he or she has qualified two dogs. In addition, every handler, whether entering with one or two qualified dogs, is permitted to enter an Alternate dog. The reason for this is that after qualifying a whole year is a long time in a dog’s life (perhaps 7 years in human terms) and the dog may not be fully fit or able to travel. Therefore the handler may elect to run his or her Alternate dog, providing they inform the organisers the night before their run. Alternate dogs are listed in a separate table, under the number of the handlers qualified dog. The commentator will know if an Alternate dog is to run and will announce this. The handlers’ run numbers have been carefully randomized. Each nations’ dogs will be spread across different fields and over the two days. If a handler has two dogs then you will find that they are running on different fields and on different days. Being fully randomized does not mean that you will not find handlers from the same country with adjacent numbers; that does happen and it is due to statistical chance.

WARNING Please do not approach or allow children to approach dogs in the absence of the handler. Whilst sheepdogs are not normally ill-tempered, there can be exceptions to this. Naturally people are drawn to stroking a dog, however please ask the handler first and do accept the advice of the handler. The International Sheep Dog Society WILL NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY INJURY CAUSED BY IRRESPONSIBLE OR FOOLHARDY ACTIONS..

After some handler’s names you will see a (C) or a (T). Each nation of five or more has selected a team of five different handlers with a nominated dog; these are typically the highest placed in their nation. These five are entered to a Team Competition in which their points from days one and two are totalled to determine a winning nation. (C) indicates the team captain and (T) a team member. “Your aspirations are your possibilities.” Samuel Johnson

2011 ISDS World Sheep Dog Trials

About Cumbria

Cum bria was formed from the old counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and part of North Lancashire, and is now England's second largest county in size. It also contains a small part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. A predominantly rural county, Cumbria is home to the Lake District National Park, considered one of the most beautiful areas of the United Kingdom. The Lake District is the largest of the United Kingdom's National Parks, and contains 16 lakes (and many smaller tarns), more than 150 high peaks, with four over 3000 feet (the only mountains in England). Much of the county is mountainous, with the highest point of the county (and of England) being Scafell Pike.

The northern ranges of the Lake District consist of Ordovician slate, about 500 million years old; the central ranges of younger volcanic rock; and a southern range of limestone and other Silurian rock about 440 million years old. These highlands are dissected by U-shaped valleys, known as dales, containing the lakes, some of which are artificial and all but one of which do not have the word “lake” in their names, being known instead as “meres” (Windermere, Grasmere, Thirlmere) or “waters” (Ullswater, Wastwater, Coniston Water); the exception is Bassenthwaite Lake. The animal life of the Lake District includes three unique species of fish: the schelly, the vendace, and the char; and a number of golden eagles.

In Neolithic times, the Lake District was a major source of stone axes, examples of which have been found all over Britain. The primary site, on the slopes of the Langdale Pikes, is sometimes described as a 'stone axe factory'.

Celts, Romans, Angles, and Vikings in succession settled among the lakes, and it was the last of these who provided such place-name elements as “-thwaite” (clearing), “fell” (mountain with grazing), “gill” (ravine), and “force” (waterfall).

There are six National Nature Reserves, 100 sites of Special Scientific Interest, over 50 delectable dales, and some four hundred towns, villages and hamlets within its 885 square miles of breathtaking countryside. The area has provided inspiration for generations of British and foreign artists, writers and musicians, including Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth. Historically, farming, in particular of sheep, was the major industry in the region. The breed most closely associated with the area is the tough Herdwick.

There are some 50 stone circles in Cumbria, including some of the earliest stone circles in Britain. There is a range of types, from the vast monumental circles at Castlerigg, Swinside and Long Meg, to the standard early bronze age circles of about 100 ft in diameter as at Casterton and Elva Plain, to diminutive rings associated with alignments and burials. Some are associated with henge monuments such as Mayburgh.

Hadrian's Wall is the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain. It stretches seventy-three miles from Wallsend near Newcastle, across the neck of England to Bowness-on-Solway in North West Cumbria, and stands today as a reminder of the past glories of one of the world's greatest empires.

The Sheep Breeds of Cumbria

The Herdwick, the Rough Fell and their close neighbour the Swaledale have been bred and reared to withstand the climate. The Herdwick and Rough Fell in particular have been shepherded generation on generation, possibly back to early medieval times, to their own hill territory or "heaf", to which they will always return. Many hill farms have "fell rights" on which to pasture sheep, cattle and occasionally ponies. The North Country Mule is a cross breed common in Cumbria also. Source: Visit Cumbria

Understanding a Trial Course

1. Outrun: In the outrun the dog is sent out either to the left or right from the post while the handler remains at the post. The dog should not stop until it has reached the point of balance behind the sheep, and should be far enough away from the sheep so as not to disturb them. The point of balance is where the dog will lift the sheep in the direction of the first set of gates.

6. Penning: The handler must proceed to the pen, leaving the dog to bring the sheep to the pen.The handler stands at the gate holding the rope and must not let go of the rope while the dog works the sheep into the pen. When the sheep are in the pen, the handler must completely close the gate before releasing the sheep. After releasing the sheep, the handler must close and fasten the gate and go to the shedding ring.

7. Single: The dog brings the sheep from the pen to the shedding ring. One of two marked sheep will be shed (separated) within the shedding ring and held away from the remaining four sheep until the judges are satisfied.

2. Lift: At the end of the Outrun, the dog will either come to a full stop or merely slow down. The dog will then approach the sheep smoothly, cautiously and steadily, taking control in a firm and quiet manner. The sheep should move in a direct line to the first obstacle (gates).

3. Fetch: The sheep must be brought at a steady pace and in a straight line from the place of lifting to the first gates and thereafter in a straight line to the handler/post. If the sheep deviate from the line they should be brought back to that line as soon as practical. If the sheep fail to go through the gates, no retry of the gates is allowed.

4. Drive: The drive is approximately 450 yards long over a triangular course and consists of two sets of gates through which the dog drives the sheep. The drive starts immediately the sheep have passed behind the handler/post and ends when the sheep enter the shedding ring. The sheep are required to go in straight lines between the obstacles and reasonable turns at the post and at both gates are expected. If the sheep fail to go through the gates, a second attempt at either gate is not allowed.

5. Shedding: Two unmarked sheep are shed (separated) in the shedding ring and held away from the remaining three sheep. The dog must show control of the two unmarked sheep, either in or outside the ring. On completion of the shed, the handler must reunite the sheep before proceeding to the pen.

Qualifying & Semi-Finals Course

The qualifying and semi-finals course involves the handler and dog working together to move five sheep (three unmarked and two marked with red collars) around a course. There are seven components of the course, each of which is scored by the judges. (Note: The following is for guidance only).

No points are awarded for any phase of the work that has not been completed within the time limit of 15 minutes.

tidbits

Switzerland has never had a competitor in the final of a World Trial. But their rise in prominence in sheep dog trialling is evidenced by Urs Imhof winning the 2010 Continental Championship with Ella v. Bettmerhorn - a first for Switzerland. Will 2011 see Switzerland in the finals?

Did you know...? This year sees the re-opening of Lowther Castle to the public for the first time in 70 years, along with130 acres of 17th century gardens, following a £9 million project supported by the North West Development Agency and the European Regional Development Fund.

“An athlete cannot run with money in his pockets. He must run with hope in his heart and dreams in his head. ~Emil Zatopek

2011 ISDS World Sheep Dog Trials

Sheep North of England Mule

The 2011 World Trial sheep are North of England Mules. The North of England Mule is sired by the Bluefaced Leicester, who with a 230% pure bred lambing is the most prolific native breed in the country and passes this onto its progeny. This medium sized cross-bred sheep has a Swaledale dam known for their hardiness, superior mothering and milk quality. Crops of 180200% are common amongst well-managed lowland flocks of North of England Mules. (Source: NEMSA)

“Gin is fed on CSJ food and herbs. They keep her in fantastic peak condition and able to perform her demanding routines. CSJ is a super star product for a super star dog!” Kate Nicholas, Gin and Ice with a Twist

“It didn’t take a lot of persuasion to see the benefits of CSJ feeds. The first thing I noticed was the shine to my dogs’ coats and I’ve found that at the end of a lot of hard work they have kept condition really well this season.”

Graeme Scott 'I've trained and prepared my dogs for competition at World and European Championship level for the past 10 yrs and I can categorically say CSJ foods and supplements fuel them like no other. CSJ gives them the nutrients and energy they require to compete in sprint races and 2 week long stage races. From Scottish forests and Norwegian wilderness to the mighty slopes of the Pyrenees I can be sure that the dogs are in the right condition to perform'.

We have no hesitation in recommending this food. 8 x Gold Medallist in British Championship SDAS Champion 2010/11 (Above)

“The rewards for those who persevere far exceed the pain that must precede the victory.” Ted W Engstrom

Girls Allowed

There are few names as wellknown as ‘Cropper’ in sheep dog trialling. One of the rising stars is Chloe Cropper.

In 2008, 16-year-old Chloe was the youngest ever competitor at a World Sheepdog Trials. Three years on, Chloe is the second youngest World Trial competitor (Robbie Welsh being younger) & among the most talented sheep dog handlers in England.

Chloe has literally been born into the sport and she looks set to fulfil a destiny the family name bestows upon her. With countless trial wins to her name, Chloe’s trophies are rapidly accumulating. Already she has won the prestigious BBC’s ‘One Man and His Dog’ Young Handler competition and recently finished 3rd at the 2011 English National Championship.

It seems that in a sport where age, experience and maturity count, Chloe demonstrates there are always exceptions to the rule.

30

Swedish by birth, but now calling Norway home, Karin Mattsson burst into prominence in 2008 when she secured two places in the semifinals at the World Trial with her dogs, Sammie and Lyn. She went on to place seventh in the final with Sammie; the only ‘all-girl’ team in the final.

Karin has been a pioneer for young woman triallists on the Continent. She represented Sweden internationally from 2004-2006. Since moving to Norway, Karin has been selected for the Norwegian team every year since 2007. Twice she has won the Continental Championship Young Handlers competition; all of these achievements with “super” Sammie. If there were any doubts about the skill of young women handlers, Karin has clearly laid these doubts to rest.

In 2011, Karin will bring her top team of girls to Cumbria. It will be Sammie’s swansong as she is nearing retirement. The effervescent Karin will be hoping Sammie can match or better her achievements from 2008 as it would be a fitting end to a remarkable career.

It is a remarkable feat to win a World Championship but one modest farmer from Wales has done just that - and not once, but twice. In so doing, Aled Owen has firmly secured his reputation as one of the all-time greats in the sport. Fresh on the heels of winning the 2007 International Supreme, the holy grail for U.K.-based working sheepdogs, Aled won the 2008 World Championship with Roy, the dog he will again compete with at the 2011 World Trials. Roy’s father, Bob, won the World Trial in 2002.

Unforgettable Working Holidays in Breathtaking South Africa

A farmer by trade, Aled divides his time among his farming duties, his sheepdogs, and the family enterprises of Ewe-phoria, where he gives sheepdog, sheep and sheep shearing demonstrations, and the adrenaline pumping off-road quad biking tours at Adventure Mountain.

Personal training with Faansie Basson Coupled with practical work experience on a large sheep farm

The pressure to win a third World Championship must surely be enormous. True to form, though, Aled bears both the blessings and burdens of fame in his typical down-to-earth manner. When Aled steps onto the field this week, he won’t be thinking of the competitors who have run before him or his history with the event. He’ll be thinking about getting the job done without fanfare but certainly with polish.

Winston Churchill said “History is written by the victors.” Win or lose, the partnership between Aled and Roy has already found its place in the history book but is there yet another chapter to be written about this dynamic team?

James Hogg, The Ettrick Shepherd 1770-1835

[Owing to space, I will not go deeply into the life of Hogg here. For those interested in more, please see International Sheepdog News (the magazine of the International Sheepdog Society), March/April 2011].

James Hogg, known as "The Ettrick Shepherd," Scottish poet and novelist, was shaped by his birth and circumstances. Born into a family of small farmers and shepherds, he lived most of his life in the beautiful countryside among the rivers of the Borders: the Ettrick, the Yarrow, Lethan Water, and Douglas Burn. His mother was a renowned storyteller, and had a great influence on Hogg's poetry and novels, which were filled with the imagination, the legend and the mystery of the Borders. Hogg also looms large in sheepdog history, not for his imagination, but for his admiration of the shepherd's dog and his ability to convey that appreciation in his writing as a journalist. Sheepdogs were often his favorite subjects, and he devoted an entire chapter to them in The Shepherd's Calendar (William Blackwood, Edinburgh, 1829). We'd like to present a few of those stories here. To quote Hogg himself, "the anecdotes of these animals are all so much alike, that were I but to relate the thousandth part of those I have heard, they would often look very much like repetitions. I shall therefore only mention one or two of the most singular, which I know to be well authenticated." I expect that you will recognize the Border Collie of today in these stories.

b

“A curious story that appeared lately of a dog belonging to a shepherd named John Hoy, has brought sundry similar ones to my recollection, which I am sure cannot fail to be interesting to those unacquainted with the qualities of that most docile and affectionate of the whole animal creation—the shepherd's dog. The story alluded to was shortly this. John was at a sacrament of the Covenanters, and being loath to leave the afternoon sermon, and likewise obliged to have the ewes at the bught [pen] by a certain hour, gave his dog a quiet hint at the outskirts of the congregation, and instantly she went away, took the hills, and gathered the whole flock of ewes to the bught, as carefully

and quietly as if her master had been with her, to the astonishment of a thousand beholders, for the ewes lay scattered over two large and steep hills. This John Hoy was my uncle...I have often heard him tell an anecdote of another dog called Nimble: One drifty day, in the seventy-four, after gathering the ewes of Chapelhope, he found that he wanted [was missing] about an hundred of them. He again betook himself to the heights, and sought for them the whole day without being able to find them, and began to suspect that they were covered over with snow in some ravine. Towards the evening it cleared up a little, and as a last resource he sent away Nimble. She had

best dogs in all the country. The first remarkable one that I had was named Sirrah. He was beyond all comparison the best dog I ever saw. He was of a surly unsocial temper—disdained all flattery, and refused to be caressed; but his attention to his master's commands and interests never will again be equalled by any of the canine race.”

b

“Hector was quite incapable of performing the same feats among the sheep that his father [Sirrah] did; but as far as his judgment served him, he was a docile and obliging creature. He had one singular quality, of keeping true to the charge to which he was set. If we had been shearing or sorting sheep in any way, when a division was turned out, and Hector got the word to attend them, he would have done it pleasantly, for a whole day without the least symptom of weariness. No noise or hurry about the fold, which brings every other dog from his business, had the least effect on Hector, save that it made him a little troublesome on his own charge, and set him to a-running round and round them, turning them in at the corners, out of a sort of impatience to be employed as well as his baying neighbours at the fold.”

found the scent of them on the hill while her master was looking for them; but not having received orders to bring them, she had not the means of communicating the knowledge she possessed. But as soon as John gave her the gathering word, she went away, he said, like an arrow out of a bow, and in less than five minutes he beheld her at about a mile's distance, bringing them round a hill, called the Middle, cocking her tail behind them, and apparently very happy at having got the opportunity of terminating her master's disquietude with so much ease.”

b

“My dog was always my companion. I conversed with him the whole day—I shared every meal with him, and my plaid in the time of a shower; the consequence was, that I generally had the 2011 ISDS World Sheep Dog Trials

“A single shepherd and his dog will accomplish more in gathering a stock of sheep from a highland farm, than twenty shepherds could do without dogs; and it is a fact, that, without this docile animal, the pastoral life would be a mere blank. Without the shepherd's dog, the whole of the open mountainous land here in Scotland would not be worth a sixpence. It would require more hands to manage a stock of sheep, gather them from the hills, force them into houses and folds, and drive them to markets, than the profits of the whole stock would be capable of maintaining. Well may the shepherd feel an interest in his dog; he it is indeed that earns the family's bread, of which he is himself content with the smallest morsel; always grateful, and always ready to exert his utmost abilities in his master's interest. Neither hunger, fatigue, nor the worst of treatment, will drive him from his side; he will follow him through fire and water as the saying is, and through every hardship, without murmur or repining, till he literally fall down dead at his feet.” By Carole Presberg

World Trials Finals Course 46

Š Kelvin Broad.

The finals course involves the handler and dog working together to move twenty sheep (fifteen unmarked and five marked with red collars) around a course. The main components of the course, each of which is scored by the four judges, are as follows: (Note: The following is for guidance only).

Outrun 1

LIFT 1

In the first outrun the dog is sent out to the right or left of the course, as decided by the Trials Committee before the Trial. All competitors will run on that side (the second outrun will be to the other side). The handler remains at the post. The dog should not stop until it has reached the point of balance behind the sheep, and should be far enough away from the sheep so as not to disturb them. The point of balance is where the dog will lift the sheep in the direction of the first set of gates.

At the end of the Outrun, the dog will either come to a full stop or merely slow down. The dog will then approach the sheep smoothly, cautiously and steadily, taking control in a firm and quiet manner. The sheep should move in a direct line to the first obstacle (gates).

2011 ISDS World Sheep Dog Trials

FETCH 1

Shedding

The sheep must be brought at a steady pace and in a straight line from the place of lifting to the first gates and thereafter in a straight line to the turn back pole. If the sheep deviate from the line they should be brought back to that line as soon as practical. If the sheep fail to go through the gates, no retry of the gates is allowed. The first fetch is complete when the sheep have reached the turn back pole. The dog having reached the pole will then be redirected for the second packet of 10 sheep.

Fifteen unmarked sheep are to be shed off (separated) from the five red collared sheep within the shedding ring. The sheep are moved between the handler and his/her dog allowing unmarked sheep to be shed off and leave the ring while keeping the marked sheep in the shedding ring. Manoeuvring to take the 5 red collared sheep off in one go from the other 15 is not permitted. Should any marked sheep leave the shedding ring and join any unmarked sheep already shed off, the unmarked sheep with which the marked sheep have joined will be brought into the ring and shedding resumed. Once the 15 unmarked sheep have been shed off, the handler may proceed to the pen. Before penning, the handler may use the dog to remove the unmarked sheep to a safe distance so they do not to interfere with the penning of the marked sheep.

OUTRun, Lift and Fetch 2 The dog is turned back for the second packet of sheep on the opposite side of the course to the first packet. The second packet of sheep should be brought through the gate in a straight line towards a point parallel to the first lot of sheep. The dog will unite the two packets of sheep by gathering the first lot and bringing them to the second lot. The sheep must be united before the end of the fetch. At the end of the fetch the handler will move the sheep around the post/behind the handler as close as is practical and in a steady and smooth manner.

DRIVE

Penning The handler must proceed to the pen, leaving the dog to bring the sheep to the pen.The handler stands at the gate holding the rope and must not let go of the rope while the dog works the sheep into the pen. When the sheep are in the pen, the handler must completely close the gate within the time limit. After realeasing the sheep, the handler must close and fasten the gate to conclude their run.

The drive is approximately 600 yards long over a triangular course and consists of two sets of gates through which the dog drives the sheep. The drive starts immediately the sheep have passed behind the handler/post and ends when all of the sheep enter the shedding ring. The sheep are required to go in straight lines between the obstacles and reasonable turns at the post and at both gates are expected. If the sheep fail to go through the gates, a second attempt at either gate is not allowed. The handler will remain at the post until the first of the sheep is in the shedding ring.

Can a Modern-day Ettrick Shepherd Win a Rare Hat Trick?

The ‘original’ Ettrick Shepherd, James Hogg, the Scottish poet and novelist, looms large in sheepdog history. Over two centuries later, a modern day Ettrick shepherd is quietly revising sheepdog history. This is three-time International Supreme Champion and six-time Scottish National Champion, Bobby Dalziel.

A bone fide Ettrick shepherd, Bobby and his close-knit, yet small, team of dogs work the Scottish braes almost every day of their lives. His dogs are legendary around the globe. Wisp and Dryden Joe are two whose names liberally roll off the tongue when talking about ‘great’ dogs. Another gifted dog, and the one Bobby will run this week, is 7-year-old Joe.

1961: The year Northern Ireland joined Scotland, Wales, and England at the International. Eire joined in 1965. 2004: The first nation beyond ‘the four home nations’ joined as an Associate. Associate members now include: Austria, Brazil, the Czech Republic, the Faroes, Italy, Germany and The Netherlands.

At the age of 2, Joe won the Supreme Championship, making him one of the youngest dogs to have ever won this prestigious event. Three years later, in 2009, he won the Scottish National Championship. He repeated this win in 2011 when he captured his second Scottish National title.

No dog in the history of the World Trial has ever won a National Championship, a Supreme Championship and a World Championship. Joe is the only dog on the planet that has a chance at this. Would there be anything more thrilling for the history of the shepherd’s dog to see an Ettrick Shepherd and his dog, Joe, win this rare hat trick? 2011 ISDS World Sheep Dog Trials

Calculating Merit Points

Fifth Place: £250

Each of the four judges will rank each competitor in order of Judges Points from 1st to 16th. The highest placed competitor (i.e. ranked 1st overall on Judges Points) will receive 16 Merit Points. The second placed competitor will receive 15 Merit Points, and so forth.

Sixth Place: £150

7-16th Places: £100

50

Team Prizes

All Finalists All finalists will also receive a 2011 ISDS World Trial Medal kindly provided by the ISDS / World Trial Committee, and a leather dog collar with a custom engraved brass plate kindly donated by Border Collies in Action.

If a judge has awarded identical Judges Points to two different competitors, the Merit Points are summed and then divided evenly between the two competitors. For example. if the top two competitors receive the same Judges Points, the Merit Points for each competitor would be : 16 (for 1st place) + 15 (2nd place) ÷ 2 = 15.5 Merit Points each.

Official Competition Medal A specially commissioned, competition medal is provided for every handler who arrives to take part in the trials. Special gold, silver, and bronze effect versions are awarded to the winners, second and third places of the individual and team competitions. The image of the dog is taken from a drawing produced by Katy Cropper that is used for some of the ISDS logos..

In the event of Merit Points being equal for any dog the final order will be decided by the total number of Judges’ Points awarded. If these are equal then points on Outrun, Lift and Fetch added together will decide.

The sum of the Merit Points, calculated by Judge for each dog, decides the final ranking with the highest number coming first. For example, if each Judge placed the same dog in top place it would receive (16+16+16+16) = 64 Merit Points, the maximum score possible.
