THE JOY OF GIVING

In Haiti, education is a privilege, not a right.

Education is considered one of the best ways for Haitians to escape poverty, but unfortunately, it is beyond the reach of most. Literacy rates in Haiti remain around 50%, which is significantly lower than the 90% literacy rate for Latin American and Caribbean countries (Library of Congress, 2006). The 2010 and 2021 earthquakes devastated a large percentage of the small number of primary and secondary schools in Haiti. A lack of resources and poor infrastructure have placed Haiti in a critical situation, and there is a desperate need for school facilities and education. Angels for Humanity intend to build a school, the Angels for Humanity Academy, in the rural community of Thomazeau. The children in this community live in extreme poverty and are in dire need of a school.

One of the major obstacles to children attending school in Haiti, particularly in the rural areas, is the lack of physical access to school facilities. We know of some children who walk for hours one way to get to school each morning after performing their domestic chores at home. This long fatiguing walk, oftentimes before dawn, drains the students’ ability to stay focused and alert while at school. Transportation will therefore be provided as part of this project.

Haiti is home to 11 million people, with children making up 54% of the population. Sadly, 64.3% of boys and 57.3% of girls are unable to read or write. Our organization believes that quality education is the fundamental right of every child, and we are committed to changing these dis‑ heartening numbers. Indeed, Haiti can feel like a place of overwhelming need.

Angels for Humanity secured a 3.5‑acre parcel in the impoverished rural community of Thomazeau, 4 miles northeast of Port‑au‑Prince, Haiti. The project will consist of 6 classrooms for kindergarten/elementary classes, as well as administrative offices, a library, and computer lab. There will also be a cafeteria with a full kitchen, auditorium, composting latrines, housing for 25 guests, play and sports areas, and an organic garden. The academy will be designed to serve as a model for other educational facilities in rural Haiti. Students will learn many skills and values: Spiritual and Moral Growth; Civic Responsibility and Empowerment; Environmental Stewardship; Artistic Creativity and Individual Expression; Fluency in Haitian‑Creole, French, and English; and Technological fluency especially with computers. The school will be tuition free, and Angels for Humanity will provide the children with 2 meals a day, uniforms, and backpacks with supplies each school year.

With your support, we can make this dream a reality to fulfill our mission and our vision to inspire, empower, and support impoverished children in Haiti and around the world by providing them access to quality education and healthcare; and, that every child is given the tools and opportunity to thrive and become productive members of their communities.
