Introduction by Al Orensanz Director of the Angel Orensanz Foundation

Aisar Abdala Jalil Martinez has created a pictorial world all of his own. It seems to anticipate a universe well before the human beings flourished, or decades or even centuries after man has disappeared from the face of the earth.

Semiotically speaking, text and painting run on two different conceptual fields.

Painting articulates a semantic domain of ideograms that have an almost universal value since they convey significance directly understandable to a context that receives them. Text, on the other hand, is a condensation of formulated and accepted meanings. Images and text coexist, fecundate each other and generate together the basic truths on which we operate. Aisar A. Jalil Martinez has moved this discourse a long step forward. It happens both when he explores the immediate segments of his perception or the entire territories and continents of his deserted dreams. The longer the scope of his vision the deeper the feeling of depression and desolation for the viewer of his canvasses.

Aisar’s vocabulary is crepuscular and existentialist. He plays with double concept of “Before the night falls” and “Before the sun sets down”; either way all our understanding takes place against the backdrop of the darkness in which everything disappears. What happens to these desolate landscapes and these skies of skeletons?

Will the night devour them or are they the destructive forces that efface the colors of the earth and the lights of the skies? Are we attending the end of the landscape and language or do we witness the embryonic, diabolical soup where our nightmares align and perversely fecundate each other again?

What happened to our planet Earth and its skies before this unspoken catastrophe after which takes his stories? Now legions of unfriendly birds, distorted specimens and deformed larvae fly through unfriendly skies. How close are they, or were they, to the end of time? No human witness survives this eschatological desolation. More than paintings of an artist this exhibition seems to gather silent records; long, long after the human speech and alphabets were able to recount them and pass them on to us.

When we enter the art galleries of the Angel Orensanz Foundation in Lower Manhattan we are possessed by the owe and the consternation of having entered the caves of Chauvet in Southern France, accompanying Werner Herzog to document his Cave of Forgotten Dreams. These paintings make us hear our heartbeats.

We almost feel tempted to flee the gallery areas of the Orensanz Foundation, where they cover the walls like in Lascaux or Altamira, and run for the higher spaces where we can bask in the gold, high blue ceilings of the Neogothic German architecture of the mid 19th century Berlin.

They say the Goethe died screaming “Mehr Licht�: More Light. In the movie by Julian Schnabel, Reinaldo Arenas is depicted travelling in his last days through New York and dying in a asphyxiating apartment in Chelsea, trying desperately to breath and looking for more light.

Aisar has built this exhibition as homage to his autobiography book Before Night Falls that was on the New York Times list of the ten best books of the year in 1993. He visited our Foundation during his stay in New York to listen to a Cuban music band.

In 2000 his work was made into a film, directed by Julian Schnabel, in which Arenas was played by Javier Bardem. An opera based on the autobiography with libretto and music by Cuban-American composer Jorge Martin was premiered by the Fort Worth Opera on May 29, 2010, with baritone Wes Mason singing the role of Reinaldo Arenas.

We are proud to present and host for this occasion a new homage to the writer, in this occasion by Aisar Jalil. Welcome!

Aisar Abdala Jalil Martinez ha creado un mundo pictórico totalmente suyo. Parece anticiparse a un universo bien antes de que el ser humano fuese creado, o décadas, incluso siglos después de que el hombre desaparezca de la faz de la tierra.

Semióticamente hablando, texto y pintura corren en dos campos conceptuales bien distintos. La pintura articula un dominio semántico de ideogramas que tienen un valor incluso universal conforme a la significancia directa de un contexto comprensible que las recibe. Texto, por otra parte, es una condensación de formulados y aceptados significados. Imágenes y contexto coexisten, fecundándose mutuamente y generando juntos las verdades básicas en las que operamos. Aisar A. Jalil Martínez ha movido este discurso un paso más adelante. Esto ocurre tanto cuando el explora los segmentos inmediatos de su percepción de los territorios y continentes de sus desertores sueños. Cuanto más lejos se amplia su campo de visión, más profundo es el sentimiento de depresión y desolación para el observador de sus lienzos.

El vocabulario de Aisar es crepuscular y existencialista. Él juega con el doble concepto de “Antes de que Anochezca” y “Antes de que el Sol caiga”; de cualquier modo todo nuestra comprensión tiene lugar frente a un oscuro telón de fondo donde todo desaparece. ¿Que le ocurre a estos paisajes desoladores y a estos cielos de esqueletos? Los devorará la noche o son sus fuerzas destructivas las que afectan a los colores de la tierra y a las luces del cielo?, ¿Estamos presenciando el fin de los paisajes y el lenguaje o asistimos a la diabólica sopa embrionaria donde nuestras pesadillas se alinean y se fecundan unas a otras de forma perseverante de nuevo? ¿Qué le ocurre en nuestro planeta Tierra y sus cielos bien antes de que la catástrofe no mencionada tomase sus historias? Legiones de pájaros, desorientados especímenes y larvas deformes vuelan a través de inamistosos cielos ¿Cuan próximos están o estuvieron del final de los tiempos? Ningún ser humano presenció esta escatológica desolación. Más que pinturas de un artista, esta exposición parece registrar registros silenciosos; tarde, bien tarde después de que la voz humana y los alfabetos fuesen capaces de recontarlos y transmitirlos a nosotros. Cuando entramos a las galerías de la Fundación Angel Orensanz en el Bajo Manhattan, nos sentimos poseídos por el deudor de la consternación como entrando en las cuevas de Chauvet en el sur de Francia, acompañando a Werner Herzog para documentar su Cueva de los Sueños Olvidados. Estas pinturas nos hacen oír los latidos de nuestro corazón.

Nos sentimos casi tentados a sobrevolar las galerías de la Fundación Orensanz, donde las pinturas de Aisar cubren las paredes como en las cuevas de Altamira, y correr por sus amplios y altos espacios donde disfrutar del dorado y azul de sus bóvedas, de la arquitectura neogótica alemana del Berlín de mediados del siglo XIX. Alguien dice que Goethe murió gritando “Mehr Licht”: Más Luz! En la película de Julian Schnabel, Reinaldo Arenas es representado viajando en sus últimos días a través de Nueva York y muriendo de asfixia en un apartamento de Chelsea, intentando desesperadamente respirar y encontrar más luz.

Aisar rinde homenaje en esta exposición a su libro autobiográfico Antes que Anochezca que apareció en la lista del New York Times como uno de los mejores libros de 1993. Reinaldo Arenas visitó nuestra Fundación durante su estancia en Nueva York para escuchar un concierto de una banda de música Cubana. En el año 2000 su trabajo se trasladó al cine en la película dirigida por Julian Schnabel, en la que Arenas es interpretado por el Español Javier Bardem. Una opera basada en la autobiografía del escritor con libreto y música del compositor Cubano-Americano Jorge Martín fue presentada en la Fort Worth Opera el 29 de Mayo de 2010, con el barítono Wes Mason cantando en el papel de Reinaldo Arenas.

En esta ocasión, nos sentimos orgullos de recibir y presentar un nuevo homenaje a este escritor, esta vez de la mano de Aisar Jalil. Bienvenidos!

Aisar Jalil, trained as a sculptor, investigates the canvas as a three dimensional compositional exercise of volume and space. His works are conceived as a vehicle that permits us to transcend our ordinary built environment allowing us to fulfill our desire to enter into a more human dimension and relationship with what we find around us. He creates a comfort zone with the elements that surround us, paradoxically, by means of confusion between time, matter and space. Like the works of Northern Renaissance painter, ‘’Hieronymus Bosch’’ Aisar Jalil uses fantastic imagery and structure to illustrate compositional narratives, but instead of the nightmare landscapes presented by the Renaissance surrealist Bosch, Aiser shows us how art can create a serene environment irrespective of even the most disconcerting circumstantial elements.

Áisar Jalil, se formó como escultor, investiga en el lienzo realizando un ejercicio compositivo tridimensional de volumen y espacio. Sus obras se conciben como un vehículo que nos lleva a trascender nuestro ordinario entorno construido, lo que nos permite cumplir el deseo de entrar en una dimensión más humana y su relación con lo que encontramos a nuestro alrededor. Se crea una zona de confort con los elementos que nos rodean, paradójicamente, por medio de la confusión entre el tiempo, la materia y el espacio. Al igual que las obras del pintor renacentista “El Bosco”, Áisar utiliza imágenes y estructuras fantásticas para ilustrar relatos de composición, pero en lugar de los paisajes surrealistas de pesadillas presentados por el artsita renacentista, Áisar nos muestra cómo el arte puede crear un medio ambiente sereno, incluso más desconcertante e independiente de los elementos circunstanciales.

Trained as a sculptor at the Repin Academy of Fine Arts in Leningrad, Jalil Aisar unveils the relationship between volume and space. For him, the canvas is more than a surface; it is a deepness, a void where depth and volume take form as a load of meanings that dominate one’s daily life, one’s way of seeing the world, and one’s desire to enter the human dimension. His propensity to focus on a hazy Renaissance perspective could make us think of a traditional landscape. However, the cumulative density of his beings, - their comings and goings, ups and downs-, creates confusion between time, matter and spatiality.

We can see mutant beings present everywhere, experiencing thousands of situations for better or for worse. It is no coincidence that they appear at dusk just “before night”, when it seems serene and the thickness of the ensuing day becomes calm. So, this revolution is a state of uncertainty, a state of “not being.” Earlier paintings reveal exalted bodies in a feverish erotic dance; however, the drama of this cloud of amorphic, zoomorphic and androgynous beings, contrasts with the delicacy, harmony, peace and joy of the “landscapes” in the background. This symphony of winged creatures instantly displays the climax of a scene, thought or action. We are all there, victims and offenders, whom eventually turn on each other, liable because of our imperfections and threatened by our awareness of being prisoners of evil. The struggle hurts and even disturbs us. The romantic and contrasting light stands for hope and a way to go. Such a dramatic moment reveals, in every one of us, a desire, a necessity to get somewhere. We may speak of a symphony of the disturbance, alteration, nonstillness, as in the climax of a play.

Everybody wants to rise, transcend, or even soar from the condition of strange creatures, cockroaches Kafkaesque, pigs with wings, incomplete bodies, men with pointy ears, kinked worms, single-celled beasts. This is more than a destination, a status transition from vertigo and impossibility. We do not know if these winged beings have moved forward or backwards. Where once the figures stood out on nothing, on neutral space, on colors, now they are outlined as antagonistic and complementary in two distinct scenes, one figure failing to penetrate or to be attracted by the other. This seems to say that there is a perfect state, a balance of nature, a power that comes from contemplation, which few have been able to reach, explaining this pathetic impulse.

Only one painting preserves peace; its characters are posing naked, beaconing you.

Nobody knows whether they came before or after the time of change, but they are serene and show us a new way.

Formado como escultor en la Academia de Bellas Artes Repin de Leningrado, Aisar Jalil nos muestra un dominio exclusivo de la relación entre volúmenes y espacios.

El lienzo para él, más que una superficie constituye una profundidad, un vacío donde soltar, lanzar, toda una carga de significados que dominan su andar cotidiano, su manera de ver el mundo, y su deseo de adentrarse en lo humano. La propensión y el acento en una esfumada perspectiva renacentista pudieran acercarlo a la noción tradicional del paisaje, sin embargo, la densidad acumulativa de sus seres, - su ir y venir, su bajar o subir- , crean la ilusión escultórica de la unidad de tiempo, materia y espacialidad.

He aquí a seres mutantes que pueblan cualquier lugar; asociados a miles de situaciones desatadas para bien o para mal. No es casual que aparezcan al caer la tarde, justo “antes que anochezca”, cuando pareciera aplacarse el espesor del día y sobrevenir la calma. Por eso su revoleteo es un estado de incertidumbre, un estado de “no estar”. Si un asomo de gracia develaban sus pinturas anteriores de cuerpos ensalzados en la posibilidad de una febril danza erótica; el dramatismo de esta nube de seres amorfos, zoomorfos, andróginos contrasta furtivamente con la delicadeza, armonía, calma y placer que modelan los “paisajes” de fondo. Esta sinfonía de seres alados muestra el instante cumbre de una escena en desarrollo, de un pensamiento o de una acción. Todos estamos allí, víctimas y victimarios, convertidos eventualmente unos en otros, acusados por nuestra imperfección y amenazados por nuestra conciencia de seres no libres del mal. Su lucha, su desplazamiento litigioso, nos duele incluso, nos molesta. La luz casi romántica y por ello contrastante, se alza, más que como eco dejado atrás, como esperanza de un camino por andar. Y es que tan dramático momento, dibuja en cada ser un deseo posterior, la necesidad de llegar a algún lugar. Pudiera acaso hablarse de una sinfonía de la perturbación, una sinfonía del enjambre, del zumbido, de la alteración, de la no quietud; como en el drama mismo, del instante en que se produce la ruptura o el descalabro.

Todos quieren elevarse, trascender; mas… encumbrarse, desde esa condición de seres extraños, cucarachas kafkianas, cerdos con alas, cuerpos incompletos, hombres con orejas puntiagudas, gusanos retorcidos, bestiario unicelular, señala, más que un destino, una condición de tránsito desde el vértigo y la imposibilidad. No sabemos si estos seres alados han avanzado o han retrocedido. Si antes las figuras se recortaban sobre la nada, sobre lo neutral, sobre el color a pulso, ahora se desarrollan de manera antagónica y complementaria en dos escenas, y una quiere penetrar a la otra, ser atraída por la otra, aunque sin lograrlo. Ello parece decir que hay un estado perfecto, un equilibrio de lo natural, un poder que nos viene de la contemplación, al que pocos hemos podido llegar, de ahí esa pulsión aturdida y patética. Un solo cuadro conserva el sosiego; sus seres posan desnudos, se muestran y te invitan, no se sabe si llegaron antes o después del momento de las transformaciones, pero en ellos está la calma y está también, el comienzo de un nuevo andar.

Biography

ÁISAR ABDALÁ JALIL MARTÍNEZ was born in Camaguey in 1953, and has studied at the following universities: Vocational School of Arts in Camagüey, the National Art School in Havana, the Repin Academy of Fine Arts in Leningrad (USSR) where he earned a Master of Fine Arts in 1983.

From 1973 to the present, ÁISAR ABDALÁ JALIL MARTÍNEZ has exhibited with other artists at national and international exhibitions. He has been part of juries at national and international events. He has been a member of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) since 1989.

Biografía

ÁISAR ABDALÁ JALIL MARTÍNEZ nació en Camagüey en el 1953. Cursó estudios en la Escuela Profesional de Artes de Camagüey, en la Escuela Nacional de Arte de la Habana, en la Academia de Bellas Artes Repin, de Leningrado (URSS) donde obtuvo el título de Master of Fine Arts en el año 1983.

Desde 1973 hasta la actualidad, expone junto a otros artistas en exposiciones nacionales e internacionales. Ha integrado jurados en salones y eventos nacionales e internacionales. Es miembro, desde 1989 de la Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC).
