The main inspiration and influences for the creation of Interpolate is mainly the human body and how it responds in restrictions and sensations. It explores movement qualities and principles of choreographers and practitioners.

Influenced from cybernetics and cyberpunk, a subgenre of science fiction in a dystopian setting, it involves wearable technologies to explore remote haptic sensations.

M a n i f e s t o The human body has the tension always to move. But how do we really move and where the movements are coming from?

People in everyday life have the tendency to have habitual movements without putting any effort to understand what they do and realise where there movements are coming from. They believe that movements just happen, but in fact movements happen unconsciously and are results of external, internal or combination of the two stimulus, and the environment that surround us.

In dance, movement is a synthesis of purposefully selected sequences of human movements. The dancer is following a constructed sequence of movement that the choreographer specifically designed. So, the performer is becoming capable to ‘see the future’ and be aware of the next steps. In contrast with contact and improvisation, which is a form of improvised dance that involves explorations of ones body in relation to others by using the fundamentals of sharing weight, touch and movement awareness. Due to those principles, movements just happen. The performer reacts with the environment, explores the body and allow movement to happen without deliberately doing it and without being aware of the result. It is always in relation with another performer by using touch in order to trigger the other person body to move by using his sensations, resulting with body movement.

By constrain the body, the movements are highlighted and the fight for movement is getting exaggerated. “By recognising the presence of these constrains, it is possible to recognise the motions”.

Interpolate is a choreographic device, that let the movement allow movement to happen, rather than do movement. It creates connections between the body and links tangible and intangible sensations though distances within the body. Become a puppet go your own self by mapping movements of the fingers to manipulate and puppeteers your own body.

Context & Reason First Thoughts The initial idea is to find ways to put people and the human body within the space, by either adding extra weight n the body and allow it to work with gravity or even lift it up to work against gravity. This idea and experiment will allow the body to explore new ways of movement and choreographies so it could potentially improve creativity and improvisation for performers and change the ways of movements of non professionals dancers.

Hand Hands play an important function on body language, communication and sensation. Fingers are the richest source of tactile feedback same as the human skin.

Movement Movements of the hand are controlled by muscles that are guided from the human brain. The hand movement sequence is quite complex, there are load rotations,flexions and extensions.

Creaform 3D Scanning for my body to export a digital model in order to understand my body size, dimensions and complexity for the creation of custom made components that will be applied explicitly for my body. The digital model is going to help on the design of the wearable on my body.

The PLA 3D printed components worked like a cast and reduce the flexibility and the fluent movement of the muscles, with the result of displacement of the component from my arm.

Idea Connect the arms main points of movement in order to create different synthesis and compositions of movement, including freedom and restrictions of body parts.

Methodology Application of extension structures to the main points of movement on the body: shoulder, elbow and wrist. Apply extensive structure to more body parts in order to interpolate the movement from the one side of the body to the other.

Materials Initial choice of material was leather and metal, which was not that sustainable choice.

Plywood timber was used as a second choice of constructing the wearable by creating a super flexible double curvature surface in order to give plasticity and flexibility to the material to allow it to move along side with the body Connections Wrists, elbow, shoulder, back, core, fingers, thighs.

Ty p e w r i t e r M e c h a n i s m It is a multi loop mechanism there is a lever, which acts when the key is pressed. This causes the hammer to come up straight where the paper would be. A very small displacement of the key produces a large movement of the hammer.

Instrument Mechanism In this case fingers work the same way as the key of the typewriter, when the is in neutral or extension position the lever is in the initial position (in an angle from the body). Once the hand is in felxion, then the steel string is pulling the lever toards the body and comes with contact to the skin.

The intention of this project is to provide an alternative performance experience in which the performer will be able to feel in real time the stimuli that performer receives for the creation of movement. This will give a unique experience of movement, tactility and remote touch and of course it will create an intimate relationship between audience and performer and it will give a better understanding to the performers movements.

An interactive choreographic performance using wearable technologies and pneumatics, which aim to connect a dancer with audience members in an experience of movement, tactility and remote touch. Inspired by the contemporary dance technique of contact improvisation, the wearable attempts to simulate the sensation of touch on the bodies of the performer and audience members.

A mechanical glove maps the finger movements of the performer, which, with the use of pneumatics, causes air pockets to inflate on a wearable device on the body. The movement of each finger corresponds to specific points on the torso, providing stimulus for the performer to move and causing novel couplings of action, sensation and coordination across the body.

Inviting members of the audience to wear the same devices on their bodies, Interpolate also translates movement from one body to the other, allowing the audience to feel the stimuli the dancer is creating and responding to in their performance.

Interpolate explores possibilities around the puppetry of the self and of others, but attempts to represent trust and empathy between dancer and audience rather than domination and control.

The research provides a full overview of the thinking process and the development of the project. It starts with a choreographic workshop developed at the Rambert Dance Company that explored body augmentation and movement qualities. The chapter also explores a series of case studies that are relevant for the design proposal.

Choreographic Workshop Stage 1 In this workshop there was an exploration of contact improvisation in order for me to create a better understanding not only from the perspective of a dancer but also from the side of the choreographer and creator.

By giving to the dancers guidance and stimuli, the performers started to create very interesting movements in different levels, angles, speeds and dimensional scale.

I was talking through the dancer by giving them easy tasks and guidance in order to relax their bodies and become more sensitive in any type of haptic stimuli and sensation in order to explore their weights their body awareness and touch that will prepare the dancers for the next tasks that are going to follow.

Choreographic Workshop Stage 2 After relaxing the dancer, the second stage of the workshop was to work with custom maid costumes, an idea that was inspired from Lucy McRae. The task was to apply inflatable balloons on the dancers body, to repeat the tasks that took place on Stage 1 of the workshop in order to study who the body moves differently with the body augmentation. There were moments that I was manipulating the performers movements just buy touching or squeezing the balloons, which was giving the dancer a similar stimuli like somebody is touching her.

This task perpeared the dancer for the third stage of the workshop in which she had to perform and demonstrate ‘Interpolate I’.

Choreographic Workshop Stage 3 The dancer on stage 3 of the workshop she performed the wearable to the public.

Because the wearable was a concept model, we spend time together training her get familiar with the choreographic device. I worked very close with her in order to make understand and get used to create different coordination between her body and the movements of her fingers.

During the performance we started together with me guiding and touching her body on the points that were pre specified from the device and I was articulating the according finger that was responsible for each point, then she started repeating the fingers and the movement and in the very end, once the audience understood what was happening, she was performing it without articulating the fingers names and without me on stage.

It was a very challenging process for the dancer as she argued it was very difficult to create different coordination between her whole body and her fingers
