I am consistently learning through Novella. This production of the spring issue has made me realize how harmony can be achieved through trust, respect and understanding. Each individual has their own vision, however at the magazine, success is achieved through the respect and admiration of the common end goal. We come together to create instinctively and it is absolutely a treat for me to see synergy and flow come to life.

“What if?”That is the enchanting question that sparks the beautiful insanity behind Paul Cade’s artwork. The Toronto-based artist does not limit his abstract creations to one thing. From sculptures made from recycled material he finds on a stroll through the city, to his paintings that could use simply acrylic and charcoal or could be constructed from almost anything, there are no rules or boundaries to what can go into making a painting. He hates to repeat himself and is always looking for a new challenge.

After visiting his home/studio, filled with an array of materials, found objects and art pieces, there is no doubt that if Cade were suddenly to lose everything, he would find a way to make art. The art projects that have been most influential in making him the artist he is today were the ones that constantly challenged him to make something out of nothing. At seventy, life has taught Paul to rely only on his imagination, to never give up and never fear failure.

Time and time again, society tries to define art and what makes artworks stand apart from the rest. However, no matter how many times one tries to understand, the more complex and elusive it seems. Something that can clearly be taken from Cade’s work is that it’s a personal fulfillment, that undeniable urge and need to create regardless of what it is or how it is received. Cade states,“The creative act (without ego) can be the closest you can get to your own soul”. One of his alluring pieces is a work on paper (“I Love My Pig Tails”) that uses, shellac, charcoal, oil, ink and thinner. When finished, with subtle shifting of earth tones and an economy of line, there appears a figure, barely defined. Though mostly suggested, there is something about the piece that keeps your eyes drawn to it, maybe it is it’s simplicity or it’s soulfulness.

Paul Cade was born in Timmins, Ontario. He studied at the Ontario College of Art, The New School Of Art and with Canadian artist, Joyce Weiland. He worked as an illustrator, graphic designer, and art director in advertising before becoming a film director. It wasn’t until 2005 that Cade returned to his first passion, making art. He continues to explore and challenge his own creative nature, through whatever sparks his imagination at the moment.

Winter Storm in the Country 2013 #1 When Peter thinks of winter, he thinks of farms and simpler times. He loves to photograph during midday snowstorms because the light, diffused by the snow and clouds, creates a timeless void reflecting that sense of serene silence and calm that can only be experienced in winter. Canadian artist, Christina Norberg, uses surreal, organic imagery in her mixed media paintings and sculptures. Her work explores places “where everything intersects; where everything feels right.”Norberg is inspired by our place as humans in both the digital modern world, and within the natural world. Her uplifting artwork aims to reconnect us with nature and ourselves, as we move further into the technological future.

In November 2013, Norberg had her first international exhibition in Bologna, Italy.

Untitled 15-4 is a piece from the new collection of large scale painting by Mike Smalley that represent the artist’s transition from working in the peace of Muskoka, to a new studio in downtown Toronto. Constantly being influenced by his environment, these new works reflect the dynamics of a city in constant motion. Using graphite and oil on linen; colour, form and light collide in a fragmentation of insight that bring together the energy and rhythm of the city.

Corrie Clark is a writer, film and television actor, and artist largely influenced by Canadian culture and landscape. She paints in a vibrant, colourful, mosaic style reflecting a sense of movement and emotion. Her use of thick, black lines creates pieces reminiscent of stained glass. As a self -taught artist, Corrie begins a piece by reflecting on the canvas like a blank sheet of paper, and when she starts painting … she feels like a“visual story-teller there to let the character and the story of the painting out”. Her works are in private homes in Southern Ontario,Vancouver, Calgary, Los Angeles and NewYork. Corrie is currently living and painting in Toronto working on her next project, the Children’s Brand“The Adventures of Johnny Canuck”. www.corrieclark.ca

Kal and Mooy Indie-rock band UKAE is one of Toronto’s rising talents to hit up the city’s music scene. Since Taylor and Nickie reunited to ignite their passion for music, the band has evolved into a talented five-piece band. The line-up consists of Taylor Whittaker (vocals, guitar), Nickie Minshall (vocals, ukulele, harmonica, guitar), Tim O’Reilly (bass, backup vocals), Andrew Dawson (lead guitar, backup vocals) and Nick McKinlay (drums). Taylor’s raspy voice paired with Nickie’s powerful and soulful sound creates
