My overall career goal is to become an architect who can provide affordable housing to low-income families as well as to create environmentally friendly structures that can be created out of sustainable materials. I would like to be able to express my creativity and explore new and innovative designs that will have a positive impact on as many people as possible. 01 ADVENTURE ALLEY

One thing that I noticed in analysis of the Haymarket in Lincoln, NE was the lack of playgrounds, so I have decided to convert the Art Alley way into a vertical play area for people of all ages. This project is titled Adventure Alley because visitors can explore all of the activities within it. The windows of the surrounding context have openings within the rock wall to allow for light to still enter the buildings.

This structure is full of actvities ranging from rockwall climbing, jumping on a trampoline, swinging and see-sawing. There is also a tall red slide and an immersive play noodle area for people to walk through and interact with as part of a sensory engagement.

The primary focus of my project is the giant red slide. I wanted to go with a bright red for the color of the slide because not only is it very visible and will attract pedestrians towards the structure, but it also correlates to the colors of the Huskers which is the valued local football team.

If one wants to rest, there are plenty of benches to sit on and observe their children let all of their energy out. They may also take in views of the city if they decide to go higher up.

02 CAPTURED ART GALLERY

For this project, I was challenged to create five organic shapes that had some resemblance to one another. Afterwards, those shapes were then converted into rooms for my art gallery. These forms are meant to capture light and diffuse it as it gets lower in the building so that no direct light interferes with the artwork within the gallery.

Captured Art Gallery is located on the corner of O street and 17th Street.

This site was previously a parking lot. Since this space is located downtown and has a clear view to the capitol, this location was ideal for attracting visitors.

03 FOREST CAPSULE

The forest capsule is a campsite structure that sits upon a cliff. Its window panes have tree silhouettes embedded within them to mimic the feel of being encapsulated by the trees of a forest. This simulates shelter in the open area.

The first floor of the stucture contains a fire pit and a stone countertop to prepare meals. There is an open space directly above the fire, in order to allow the smoke to escape out the structure.

The second level has the elevated sleeping areas which have a skylight directly above them so that campers can fall asleep under the stars. The balcony allows for activities such as star-gazing or cloud watching to take place.

04 CULINARY JUNGLE

As one enters the restaurant through the double glass doors, they will be greeted at the receptionist area and led onto the wood path to their seats. The octagonal seating allows direct views into the kitchen. Each table can seat up to five guests with the two tables on the end allowing for wheelchair seating.

Diner’s who eat here have the special opportunity to see exactly how their meals are prepared. Chefs will also be responsible for delivering the dish to the guests and can present their work.

The light cannons from the rooftop garden allow natural light into the kitchen. The taller wooden shelves in the kitchen are meant to display any artefacts that represent their culture, while the shorter shelves can be used as storage for ingredients.

In the second level, there is a garden, studio, and living space that is accessible to the visiting chefs. The chefs will also each receive their own bedroom which faces O street.

The studio spaces are for the chefs to come up with menu ideas. Each desk is equipped with a whiteboard and plenty of shelves and recipe books. The bookshelves in between the studio spaces both allow for separation between the spaces but have wide enough gaps in between that interaction between chefs can be accomplished easily.

This rooftop garden allows the chefs plant their own fresh ingredients.

The concrete columns of the structure have a rebar frame to help support it. The bamboo is embedded in the concrete with steel pipes. The reason why I decided to have bamboo within my project is to provide a type of screening in the dining areas to allow for some privacy between the groups. This also helps center the focus on the kitchen and the chefs.

05 LUMINA THEATER

Lumina, the name of our project, originates from Latin and means brilliant light. This correlates to the openness of the building and its use of natural and artificial light to illuminate the structure. The openness of the building allows people to see nearly every program that is happening in the theater even before entering it. When showtime begins the entire theater transforms. The lights of the building will turn red to mimic the closing of a red curtain. Here one can see the rehearsal room which cantilevers out to mimic the adjacent building’s opening.

The workshop in the basement has sidewalk vaults which is a glass paneling system that sits beneath the outdoor cafe area. This helps bring natural light even to the lowest levels of the building.

The scene shop is halfway in the ground with the other half being visible from Canopy street. As one enters the theater, they either have the option to go down the two staircases that lead to the main seats or up the large staircase that goes up to the balcony seats. The side of the building facing Canopy street has slanted walls that lead pedestrians towards the entrance. The diamond shaped columns also provide a facade that helps with shading.

The second level shows the balcony and the entrance to the higher seating. The rehearsal room and dressing rooms are also on this level. The top floor is reserved for the administration of the building and has an open plan concept for the office space with the exception of the director’s office and conference room which requires more privacy. There is also a roof terrace that can be used as a multipurpose space.

Stepping into the theater, one can see what it is like during downtime with the curtains up. A person standing in the alley is able to see through the building all the way to the Hopcat. The goal of this project is to make the programs of the theater very visible to the public to intrigue the community to be engaged with the events happening in the structure.

During showtime, the curtains would close to provide optimal light and sound control. The rest of the building will start to glow red to signal that there is a show happening.

Horizontal Alightments Generally, all of lumina’s elements are aligned to the surrounding context of the site. The height of the building corresponds with the height of the train station which is to the north of the structure.

Public Space The cafe within the theater is used as an incentive for people to visit. This diagram also helped determine where to place signage where it would be most viewed.

Pedestrian Circulation From the pedestrian circulation diagram, it could be determined where the main entrance of the building would be and where to put the cafe for the public space.

My ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) values an efficient way of living that prioritizes the environment, comfort, and aesthetics.

The design of my ADU is heavily based on the site context. The materials and form of the ADU matches that of the main residence. These materials include dark brown wooden planks and a black frame around architectural elements such as the windows and doors. The placement of windows of the ADU results from the sun and wind diagrams to maximize the environmental aspects such as having windows on the northeast side of the building to avoid cold winter winds. The ADU itself lies within the southeast corner of the property to allow for a shared public space between the two residents and offers a more private entrance for the inhabitant of the ADU. Due to the limited amount of space that was available, it was a challenge to come with the most effiencient plan as possible. The plan of my ADU allows the resident to have plenty of space for storage and for as many activities that they need. The front doors that are attached to the living room have the ability to open up to the front patio to offer even more space for special occasions where more people are involved.

I wanted the ADU to act as a pleasing view for the main residence rather than an obstruction. To do this, I placed several plants in front of a textured wall that goes along a path that connects the main residence to the ADU. Overall my ADU addresses environmental concerns, comfort of the resident(s), and the views.
