Practitioner James Turrell James Turrell has worked with light and space for more than a century. His artworks engaged viewers with the limits and wonder of human perception. He is highly inspired by the sky, making it his canvas and light as his medium. This work is highly influenced by James Turrell, on how he sees things and how he wants people to experience his works. Translating it with my own language, I hope to evoke a new feeling and interpretation to the viewers.

A quote that contributed to the start of this project by James Turrell:

"My work has no object, no image and no focus. With no object, image or focus, what are you looking at? You are looking at you looking, What is important to me is to create and experience of wordless thought."

The "Shallow Space" is viewed from the rear of a large room in which controlled lighting challenges the viewer's depth perception.

Raemar-Pink-White, 1969 Creating a similar experience of a "Ganzfeld", a German word to describe the phenomenom of the total loss of depth of perception as in the experience of a white-out.

Composition Thinking through the making The purpose of these compositions is to be able to create subconsciously. By using old magazines and random collection of materials, we get to learn and think who we really are as a creator.

7

Some are an exploration to illustrate James Turrell's way of design. 8

Drawings Thinking through the making. Blind drawing, shading and dotting. A fun exercise to get us back to the basics, drawing and drawing to let our brain and hands warm up.

9

My favourite way of drawing could be shading. Top: A portrait of Alysia, who was sitting in front of me Bottom: One of James Turrell tunner work.

Collages Thinking through the making Collage making as another way to free our minds and let our inituition to lead us as we create.

11

Notice the different shades of blue, the gaps where light can enter, the golden parts that are disassembled and how they create a new image.

Inspired by James Turrell use of light, that for this piece I was curious on the play of the shades of blue when cut and organised in a random way when cut in a 5x5 squares.

Fig 1. Wanting to focus on light and shadow at this reconstructed image of one his works. "What if we can stop light? Change its direction?"

Fig 1. Milk Run 2 (1997) the original centralised collage.

These mixture of collages are inspired by James Turrell's work with using light as his medium to engage viewers of the idea of 'human perception'. Fig 1. 3

For both sides of the middle work, I am trying to portray 'human perception' by showing the importance of the eyes. And how Turrell's works are mostly inspired by the natural things in the world, hence the ladder to the sky. (Fig 1.2 and Fig 1.3)

Textile Design Thinking through the making Shown here are some experimental processes into the realisation of my textile design. From sketches to digitally drawn processes.

15

Fig 2. With the collages images, I tried tracing over them in random by feeling the gaps in between (as that is where light can come through), and started dotting and blind drawing over them.

Fig 2.2 In this trace over the collages, I shaded the textures that I thought was different (can light have textures?), and focused on the tiny gaps they have in between, hence the scattered lines.

Fig 2.3 I'd like to portray here the connection of light through gaps. They are not seperated but connected through blind drawing. Showing the textures of light as well.

16

Fig 2.4 This is a combination of the layers from Fig 2 to Fig 2.3. experimenting on 'layering of lights'. "What would it look like then?'

Fig 2.5 A simplified version of the combined layers of the highlighted experimental properties of lights.

Fig 2.8 A combination of Fig 2.6 and 2.7 gaps, textures and light coexisting together.

Fig 2.9 Decided to simplify it to gaps and texture of lights.

Moulding Thinking through the making It's a first time for me to experiment by moulding/casting.

There are those that I just tried out for fun with materials such as corrugated cardboard, curious as to how they would turn out.

These two are some basic moulding that I did which are inspired from my illustration of James Turrell's work from the compositions set.

Aesop Client

Aesop's belief of bringing out the real essence and true natural beauty of their consumers resonates with the way James Turrell are inspired with his works, through natural medium with the light, sky and even celestial beings. I believe working with Aesop can bring out the best from this project as well.

As they use plant-based ingredients on their products it also gave me an idea of using as raw and organic of materials for their window display as well.

Aesop takes their shops design seriously, their interest in design that brings out the best of their products are even collated in their website titled, 'Taxonomy of Design" where they share the thought processes of the designers/ architects that worked on their shops. The branding they have is very evident on their shops available worldwide.

Furniture Thinking through the making The becoming of the furniture through sketches and models.

The Angles Furniture ideaion, focusing on light through gaps hence the play with different angles and placement of the triangular shapes.

27

The Horizontal Light I was experimenting on perception on colours by using natural and organic materials. The butter paper was an interesting material to use for light/colour diffusement.

The Tall Light As shown in the sketches, this is made out of satay sticks, crepe paper and butter paper. Playing with the light distribution if it's vertcal instead.

Layering to play with perception.

29

The Curved Light An experiment using metal wires instead of satay sticks to have that curved form. How does the distribution of light differs then?

For the hardcopy, there would be crepe paper pages.

Window Thinking through the making Consists of sketches and trial models that shows design variation through chosen materials and the thought process behind all of them.

34

First few window trials to illustrate James Turrel's way of work with light.

Crepe papers and butter paper are highly used in making them. With an additional of corrugated cardboards as they all give raw and natural look into the pieces.

35

With the use of fabrics and golden paper material, I was experimenting on illusion on perception as it the material has a reflection effect.

26

Your True Colour Perception of colors through layering.

37

Reflection What you see, how you perceive is a reflection of who you are.

A collection of sketches and trial models.

For the proposed Window designs, I have played with gaps, colours and layering, Experimenting with diffusement that could create a floating illusion by using butter paper and translucent paper.

Layered crepe papers but wit like a glimpse of sunset that is

Overlaying crepe paper layers in the middle and diffused by butter paper.

th a gap in the middle, seems diffused by translucent paper.

Small gap and layered crepe papers diffused by butter paper gives more of the floating colour illusion.

41

This is the manifestation of the rawness of layering, it evokes a different emotion from each individual. Each perception of this Window is a reflection of who we are. True beauty is how we see ourselves. With Aesop promoting natural care and ehancing what is already within us, our layers.
