Dear parents and students, Another year is close to its end. A year with many difficulties and challenges, but nonethelessa year filled with good spirit and strength. I want to congratulate all the students for the exceptional results they achieved on their external Cambridge Exams this past May/ June, and wish them good luck for this year! I hope 2015 will bring everything we wish for, but mainly good health, lots of love and the achievement of many goals.

Καλά Χριστούγεννα και Ευτυχισμένο το Νέο Έτος από εμένα προσωπικά και όλους τους συναδέλφους στο KES School of Languages.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year from me and everyone at Kes School of Languages.

Littles Writers’ Corner Just One More Step!! The Aiffel Tower or the Pantheon? Or the Opera House? Well, from the summit of the hill of Montmartre where the Basilica of the Sacre Coeur is located you can see all of them! Last year I took part in a school trip to Paris and on the last day we visited Montmartre and it was one of the most exciting experiences I ‘ve ever had! After climbing about 270 stairs we finally arrived at the top and I can say that the scenery made up for all the tiredness that we went through. After a lot of time of admiring the breathtaking view and as we realized that we weren’t able to enter the church we went for a walk along the Mantmarte where many artists can draw your portoits il got one and I can say that it was scary realistic. After that we enjoyed a delicious med and a chocolate mousse! We ended our wonderful day walking around and browsing in the souvenir shops I left with lot of great memories from there and sometimes I find myself reminiscing that day. So if you are looking for a peace that combines beauty and leisure the visit Montmartre. It’s an experience you ‘ll never forget. Helen Xenophontos FCE

Parking The parking problem in the city is well-known but is it a multi-storey parking gavage the solution or not? Growing populations in cities has led to the dilemma if Lawton Park should be replaced by a multi-storey parking gavage. To start with this building would definitely satisfy the needs of the community because the lack of parking space is a serious problem that needs to be solved. Furthermore a lot of people would be employed to guard the cars and to keep everything in order. On the other hand the construction of a multi-storey parking gavage would be at the expense of nature. For instance by destroying the park a whole ecosystem would be destroyed with it. What is more a lack of regard for the needs of children would be shown. Children deserve a place where they can enjoy nature and have fan at the same time and we have no right to take it away from them. Taking everything into account there are both advantages and disadvantages in building a multi-storey parking gavage. From my point of view the construction of this building is necessary however it should be placed somewhere that it won’t harm the environment. Isabel Kampos FCE Penfriend Dear Maria, How are you? A funny story Last summer, me and my best friend went to a birthday party. The party was at a boys house. There was a swimming pool at his house, and the party was at 09:00 pm. All my classmates were there and they were listening to music all the time. The party was outside in the garden and there was a DJ too. While I was walking next to the pool with my best friend, somebody came and pushed us into the water! Everyday was laughing very loudly and me and my best friend were so embarrassed! We got out of the water and we were so wet. We were very angry but we were sad too. When me and my best friend think about this now we laugh! Nefeli Houloude SS1

Littles Writers’ Corner Studying Abroad Lately it has been noticed that students have the tendency to go travel and manly study abroad. Studying abroad can be a positive experience, but it can also have a Few disadvantages Firstly with studying abroad, you‘ll leave new people with new habits and ways of thinking which might be different from yours. In addition it can help you to gain the experience of being an independent adult, for example cooking, cleaning, washing clothes, making arrangements, pay for transportation and accounts. On the other hand, when you study abroad not everything will be simple. It is important to know that it’s quite expensive, because some countries don’t allow students to work and apart from this you’re supposetly not going to have your parents “next to” you. Moreover studying in a foreign country means that you’ll have to learn language which is a bit difficult. In conclusion, everything has two sides: advantages and disadvantages. Each of us should accept that studying abroad has a good as well as a bad side. Personally, I think that to study abroad you have to be carefull, opened for new experiences and flexible. An unforgettable holiday Last year my friends and I went to Los Angeles. We’ve been planning that holiday for a long time. When we finally got the opportunity to travel there, we bought tickets. Michael and Jessica had reserved hotel rooms and Luke and I had planned our program. Every one of us was excited about the trip, it was going to be amazing. I can’t even describe with words how happy we were when we arrived. First of all, we went sightseeing and later at Starbucks for a break. The hotels were fascinating and the view was awesome. At night we took a stroll around. Everything was like in dreams. On Sunday night my friends had taken me at a club for my birthday. Loud music, neon lights, unknown people dancing …Perfect! A night with no worries, just having fun. To tell the truth, it was the most incredible night. After two weeks in L.A we had to leave. No one wanted to go home, because it was the best time we had ever had. On our way to Sydney, we were telling each other what things impressed us. Los Angeles is really a lovely place. It was a holiday I will never forget. Radina Raykova Pre-FCE

MIND BUBBLES DO IT YOURSELF

Clothespin Snowflakes They’re fun, easy and made from stuff you probably already have hanging around your house. Hang them on the tree, use them as decorations or attach them to Christmas gifts instead of the usual bow. You’ll need: • Clothespins (5 per snowflake) • Hot glue or wood glue • Paint, stain or white wash Directions: Remove metal spring from clothespins. Use hot glue or wood glue to secure flat sides of clothespins together. Glue five of these pieces together to create a snowflake shape. Paint, stain or whitewash the clothespins.

MIND BUBBLES RECIPE

Popcorn Balls For popping kernels, follow instructions on package, or use 12 cups plain popped microwave popcorn (without salt or butter). Also, try substituting other types of dried fruit and nuts for the raisins and peanuts. INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons butter 1 bag (10 ounces) mini marshmallows 12 cups plain unsalted popped popcorn, (from 2/3 cup kernels) 1/2 cup unsalted peanuts 1/2 cup raisins DIRECTIONS In a medium nonstick saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons butter over low heat. Add 1 bag (10 ounces) mini marshmallows; cook, stirring, until melted, 10 to 12 minutes. In a large bowl, combine 12 cups plain unsalted popped popcorn (from 2/3 cup kernels), 1/2 cup unsalted peanuts, and 1/2 cup raisins (be careful not to mix in any un-popped kernels). Pour melted marshmallows over popcorn mixture, and fold to combine. You will need to work quickly since the sugar in the marshmallows hardens as it cools. Rub a little butter into your hands to prevent sticking, and gently form 12 balls, each about 2 1/2 inches across; place on waxed paper. Let set until cool and firm, about 10 minutes.
