Past (20th Century - 2020)

From the end of last century to the 2000, China has taken a lot of Western values and people tended to pursue freedom and the environment was more supportive for a “New Era”/ “New Century”.

So as the environment for sexual minority.

The above picture is incredibly powerful when I first looked at it. In 2006, a lesbian couple kissed in front of the public at Tian’an Men Square, which is so hard to imagine at any time.

Shanghai Pride is a Chinese LGBT NGO who organize LGBT pride events in Shanghai, mainly in the form of art exhibitions and film projections. It was one of the first LGBT event to take place in mainland China.

The event was held for the first time from 7 to 13 June 2009. Three thousand people from China and other countries attended the festival. There was also to be a raffle to raise money for the Chiheng Foundation AIDS Orphans project.

Events continued annually and celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2019 However, the event encountered restrictions in 2020 as a result of the Chinese Communist Party's increasing clampdown on civil society and public

advocacy of LGBTQ rights in China. Even though the organizer claimed the reasons for shutting down the NGO is not from the government, the real reasons are never revealed. “Being too visible” was what the organizer described the NGO. In addition, under the unmeasurable pressure from the head of lead, sexual minority groups are almost invisible in public (I mean on social media and at public spaces like schools). Lots of LGBTQ+ accounts on WeChat Public Platform got banned in one night. Lots of universities have clear rules on paper saying sexual minorities are not allowed to elect for student representatives nor to apply joining the party (which usually can add credits).

The tragic story:

According to Yeh Yung-chih's mother, Chen Chun-ju, Yeh was “too feminine” since he was a child and liked “playing make-believe”. In junior school, he was bullied by his classmates for those reasons. His pants were forcibly taken off by several students to check his gender. Although this incident was reported to the school, the situation did not improve. According to the investigation, Yeh could only use the toilet safely while avoiding others if possible.

1.In October 2000, the Ministry of Education launched the "New Campus Campaign: Anti-Gender Violence" campaign, emphasizing that in addition to respecting gender conforming men and women, people of different sexual orientations and gender identities should also be respected, and stereotyping should be eliminated.

At 11:42 am on April 20, 2000, Yeh Yung-chih raised his hand during music class to go to the bathroom. The teacher consented and Yeh left the classroom. Yeh did not return and was later found by other students in the men's room. His head and nose were bleeding. The zipper of his pants was open. He could only make a faint sound and tried to crawl away. The student who found Yeh immediately notified the school and took him to the health room. After treatment from the nurse, he was transferred between hospitals. Yeh suffered severe intracranial injuries and remained in a coma. He was pronounced dead at 4:45 am the next day.

The autopsy certificate concluded that Yeh had no protective abrasions on his body. it was found that Yeh had high-grade tracheal pneumonia. Therefore, it was determined that Yeh lost consciousness in the toilet, which caused him to fall and fracture his skull. It was believed that it was his own disease that caused the fainting.

2.In 2000, the gay documentary director Mickey Chen planned to shoot Yeh Yung-chih's documentary.

In 2001, the theme of the Ministry of Education's promotion of gender education was set as "multiple genders" and "campus safety".

3.In 2004, the "Gender Equity Education Act" was created in order to give more attention to educational content about sexual orientation, gender characteristics, and gender identity.

Yeh’s case was publicized by LGBT activists and his mother, who disagreed that his death was an accident.

Yeh’a mother insisted on appealing for justice for her son. Unfortunately, there has been no satisfactory result so far.

4. In 2006, the Taiwan Gender Equality Education Association published Give Rose Boy a Hug to record the Yeh Yung-chih incident and explore its implications.

5. In 2007, the Taiwan's Ministry of Education filmed the documentary En Rose. In 2009, En Rose was released and used at high schools nationwide as teaching materials.

6. According to U.N. data, Taiwan ranked best in Asia for gender equality and sixth in the world in 2019. Legislation allowing for same-sex marriage was passed in 2017, making Taiwan the first country in Asia to do so.

On November 7, 2015, the documentary short film We Are All Different, Yet the Same (Story of Yeh Yung-chih) directed by Taiwanese director Hou Chi-jan was played during Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai’s "Play World Tour" in different cities. Tsai called on the public to pay attention to the issue of gender bullying in schools. (This is also when I first saw sexual minority visible in my life. I was in 6th grade by then, and Jolin is always on the ally side for the group.)

誰把誰的靈魂 裝進誰的身體？ Who inserted this soul into this body? 誰把誰的身體 變成囹圄囚禁自己 Who made this body become a prison that confines him/herself? 亂世總是最 不缺耳語 Whispers always appear in these troubled times 哪種美麗會 喚來妒忌 What kind of beauty will attract jealousy 你並沒有罪 有罪是這世界 On December 26, 2018, Tsai included the song "Womxnly" ( 玫 The world is sinful, you’re not 瑰少年 ) on her 14th studio album Ugly Beauty in memory of Yeh Yung-chih. The song won the Song of the Year award at the 30th Golden Melody Awards in the following year.

The song is written by the main singer A-Xin of the band May Day and Jolin Tsai. I particularly love the lines in red which particularly gives courage to all of us who may somewhat got excluded by the society.

Previously, Tsai has already released three songs in support of sexual minorities: “Fantasy” (2012), “Gentlewomen” (2014), “We’re all different, yet the same” (2014)

Jolin and a lot of other celebrity from Taiwan stood up to support the legalization of same-sex marriage in Taiwan in 2015. They also created a safe, supportive environment for people of minor sexual status. During their shows, we can always see rainbow flags, merch representing Pride. It seems like a heaven for LGBTQ+ groups from the cruel reality.

LOVE IS KING Non-Profit Concert 10 singers from Taiwan gathered together in 2017 to support the sexual minority group and the 2 years anniversary of the legalization of same-sex marriage in Taiwan. The funding raised by concert tickets will be granted to Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights.

On Sept. 10, 2022, Gaoyan ( ), a student from Shandong College of Arts in China, committed suicide during the Chinese MidAutumn Festival. According to the information posted on Chinese social media, Weibo, he previously suffered long-term discrimination from his teacher because of his family background and sexual orientation.

Weibo users mentioned Gaoyan was an amazing dancer with excellent academic grades. Gaoyan got first place in the dance examination in Hebei Province, performed for 2022’s CCTV New Year’s Gala, and won the China Dance Lotus Award. However, because of his family’s low-income background, Gaoyan’s teacher constantly told him that he did not deserve to be in school. After learning that Gaoyan identified as gay, the teacher reportedly verbally abused and discriminated against Gaoyan. The teacher also encouraged Gaoyan’s classmates to isolate him.

However, because of media censorship by Chinese officials, LGBTQ+-related media content, including the reports about Gaoyan’s incident, has been downplayed and banned.

Discrimination against LGBTQ+ groups never stopped. The good side is more and more public realize the rules are not always correct and the ally group is getting stronger. Public’s attention increased a lot from these “Rose Boys” incidents.

Twenty-two years after Yeh yung-chih incident

However, it is still not enough. Even though lots of non-profit organizations created support groups online and offline, they were constantly banned or forbidden. The organizer’s personal life may also be affected, attacked. The group needs to be stronger to be reliable under unpredictable circumstances and always be the safe place for marginalized groups. Then, a open and inclusive mindset should be taught to young children by public service announcements.

Hopefully, the situation will be better in the future. Yung-Chih is never forgotten.
