GIRL SCOUTS OF GREATER LOS ANGELES Summer Camp Guide 2021 REGISTRATION OPENS FEB. 24, 2021!

The of magic camp

Dear Campers and Families,

How is it, that after the passage of time over the course of a lifetime, memories of camp remain vivid and fresh? As an adult, you may not be able to recall the equations you learned in 9th grade Algebra or the name of the goldfish you won from the fair, but it isn’t uncommon to remember those golden summer days spent in the outdoor glory of camp. That’s part of the magic of camp. When a girl practices the unique independence that comes with camp, bonds with her fellow campers, exercises her leadership by taking those first-time risks, and experiences the great out-of-doors, that’s what we would call magic.

This summer, following a year of “can’t”, girls will experience the magic of endless possibility, infinite stars, and will disconnect from technology to reconnect with the outdoors and one another. Not only are meaningful outdoor experiences the subject matter of amazing childhood memories, they also have a strong and proven correlation with building leadership skills in girls.

Because the magic of camp is proven in the lives of the girls who experience it, Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles believes every girl deserves the opportunity to connect with the outdoors through camp. Our council supports that belief by offering incredible leadership-building substance in our camp sessions, combined with unique value in our pricing. Next to comparable camps, our camp sessions and properties offer a higher number of quality experiences at a competitive cost. Our membership is also able to use their cookie funds to power their camp journey, and for those which the cost of camp is simply not feasible, we offer financial assistance opportunities.

The magical summer glory is waiting for YOU

Yours in Girl Scouting,

HOW CAMP EXPERIENCES TRANSFORMS GIRLS:

Social Skills &Development

Girl Scouts provides high-impact programs and transformative leadership development.

In particular, our outdoor experiences provide space to learn new skills, launch lifetime friendships, and inspire a sense of independence. But more importantly now, as families adjust to the changes brought on by a global pandemic, social distancing, and a new world of virtual reality, outdoor activities can combat nature deprivation and help reduce stress and feelings of anxiety. The unprecedented events of 2020 have certainly highlighted the importance of health and well-being and how now, more than ever, girls need camp. Simply put, girls are craving connection with the outdoors, away from screens, and with girls their own age.

GSGLA has developed outdoor programming to help girls rediscover the world outside, hone their creativity, develop critical thinking, gain independence, and engage with nature, mentors, and friends.

We value the camp experience and its importance for kids to get out into nature, do things that inspire them mentally, excite them physically, and support them emotionally in a welcoming and supportive community. And we’re glad to invite your Girl Scout and your family to ignite the “Magic of Camp,” as your girl puts daily life on pause and lives an extraordinary summer adventure at GSGLA Summer Camp.

covid-19 FAQs

We know the concerns you and your family might have about how camp will adapt to the current COVID-19 pandemic. We are committed to the wellbeing and safety of our Girl Scout members, families, staff, and volunteers, and have addressed general questions below that will serve as standard operating procedures across all of our camps and camp properties. For individual camp protocols and all updates, please visit girlscampla.org.

WILL MY CAMPER STILL BE ABLE TO ENJOY HER FAVORITE ACTIVITIES AND TRADITIONS?

The hallmarks of our camps remain unchanged. Our fun camp themes, welcoming camp staff, exciting activities, and the creation of life-long memories will remain integral parts of every camp session.

WILL MY CAMPER BE IN THE SAME GROUP THROUGHOUT THE WEEK?

Yes, each camper will be in small group cohorts (units) that will travel throughout camp enjoying activities together. Co-mingling of units will be limited. For camp specific details, please visit girlscampla.org.

HOW ARE COMMON CAMP SPACES BEING DISINFECTED AND SAFE FOR MY CHILD TO USE?

Following established health and safety guidelines, GSGLA staff will properly clean and disinfect any communal shared surfaces and equipment. We have added extra hand washing stations throughout our camps and hand sanitizers will be located in each program area. Throughout each day, we will teach and reinforce healthy hygiene practices, including proper handwashing. In order to ensure proper social distancing protocols and enough cleaning time between days, before and after care will not be available.

WILL I BE ABLE TO PICK-UP OR BRING MY CAMPER TO CAMP OUTSIDE OF THE DESIGNATED CAMP ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES?

Yes, we will require that all campers and staff wear a face mask while with us at camp and during most activities, with the exception of eating and drinking. Please note that while campers and staff will be allowed to wear a face shield, we will require a face mask as well. If your child’s camp has an aquatics program (Marine Landing and Camp Lakota), masks will not be required while out on the water, or in the pool.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIRED HEALTH SCREENINGS/ PROCEDURES PRIOR TO ARRIVAL?

Prior to arrival at camp, each camper will be asked to fill out a health questionnaire (each morning for day camp, arrival day for overnight camp) in addition to health screenings upon arrival.

Due to the nature of this year’s camp screening and social distancing protocols, arrivals and departure times will be staggered. We will only be able to accept camper drop-offs and pick-ups during your camper(s)’ established times unless communicated and agreed upon in advance with your camp’s Director

WHEN TO REGISTER

Registration for all summer camps opens February 24, 2021. Be sure to secure your spot early, as registrations are processed on a first come, first serve basis. Girls must be registered members for the 2020–21 membership year in order to register for GSGLA camps.

HOW TO REGISTER

Register online at girlscoutsla.org/summercamp.

You’ll need an eBiz account and a credit card to sign up for GSGLA camps (and all GSGLA programs): Click on “eBiz” on the top right-hand corner of our homepage and set up your account. Need help or have to reset your login? Email registration@ girlscoutsla.org.

Email is the main form of camp communication, so please enter an email address that you actively use, and regularly check your Spam folder.

Not a Girl Scout member? Not a problem! Fill out our membership form at girlscoutsla.org using a credit card to purchase a Girl Scout membership ($25 per year). Send your completed form and credit card only payment either to registration@girlscoutsla.org. Allow two business days to process, then check your email to find your eBiz login credentials.

Registered as a Girl Scout in another council? No worries! Simply submit your GSGLA camp forms via email at registration@girlscoutsla.org and contact your council to request that they share your girl’s membership record with GSGLA. For additional assistance, email registration@ girlscoutsla.org. Allow up to five business days for the council to share the record with GSGLA registrars.

Girls who would like to request a “camp buddy” may do so online. Girls must register for the same camp session. While every attempt is made to place girls together, it is not guaranteed.

El Ranchito, Marine Landing, Mariposa, and Camp Lakota allow for deposits. All other camps found in the camp guide require full payment at the time of registration. Deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable between camps.

CAMP/PROGRAM CREDIT CARDS

Camp/Program Credit Cards can be used to pay for camp sessions in full or in partial payments through paper registration only. They cannot be used to pay for the camp fee deposit. If you are attending a camp with a deposit fee, you must pay the deposit fee with your personal credit card and then use the Camp/Program Credit Card for the remaining balance payment. Paper registration must include the 24-digit card number and the right-side two-digit number located on the back of the card. Please direct all questions to registration@girlscoutsla.org.

CAMP BALANCES

Camp fee balances are due four weeks before the start of every camp session. Late payments or payments not received will result in a loss of placement in the camp and loss of the deposit. It is the responsibility of the camper’s parent to pay camp fee balances by this deadline. Balance reminders will not be sent. Balances may be checked through your eBiz account. If a registration is submitted after balances are due, payment in full is required.

If your camper is dropped from the camp due to late payment and you still wish for the camper to attend the camp. You will need to pay an additional deposit fee along with the remainder of the camp balance. Payment must be in full, and space must be available at the camp—no exceptions.

general camp FAQs

DO I HAVE TO BE A GIRL SCOUT TO ATTEND CAMP?

No, but if a camper is not currently a Girl Scout, a one-time $25 annual membership fee will be applied in addition to your total camp fees. As members, girls can participate in an array of council-sponsored programs located across Greater Los Angeles during the current program year, as well as join a troop. Adults attending family weekends must also be registered.

IS FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE?

Yes, financial aid “Camperships” are available for campers whose family financial circumstances might otherwise prevent them from attending camp. Interested applicants must submit the Campership Application with their family contribution by April 24, 2021. For more details, see p. xx.

WILL MY CAMPER NEED A PHYSICAL EXAMINATION TO ATTEND CAMP?

For Lakota overnight camp, yes. Each camper is required to have a physical examination within 12 months of the starting day of their scheduled camp session. A Health History Form is required for all campers and must be completed no more than two months prior to the camper’s session.

WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS MEDICAL OR SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS WHILE AT CAMP?

Overnight camp has a health supervisor onsite. All camps have first-aid-certified adults onsite at all times who administer routine health care and any medications. An emergency contact plan is in place should any medical emergencies occur. Parents are notified as soon as possible in the event of any special medical or emergency situation. If your camper has any special needs (physical, behavioral, etc.), every effort will be made to accommodate her. Please include any past or potential concerns on the Health History Form on CampDoc.com. The camp director will contact you prior to your daughter’s session.

CAN SPECIAL FOODS BE PROVIDED?

Most special dietary needs can be met if camp directors are notified in advance. At Lakota overnight camp, meal options due to medical, religious, or other reasons may be available. Please indicate these requirements on your camper’s Health History Form. Vegetarian alternatives are offered at every meal.

CAN MY CAMPER BE IN THE SAME UNIT AS HER FRIEND?

Girl Scout camp is a wonderful way to meet new people. A camper may request one “buddy” when registering for camp. Both campers must register for the same program and week at camp. Make sure you and your child’s buddy and her parents are planning this together. Bunk buddy placement is not guaranteed. See “How to Register” on p. xx.

WHO ARE THE CAMP STAFF?

Camp staff are enthusiastic, fun, caring, energetic, well-trained, and experienced individuals who are hired based on their ability to work with children in a learning and nurturing environment. All hired staff are required to complete a background check, health screening, and 10–40 hours of training, depending on their respective position.

We follow American Camp Association accreditation standards for overnight camp which require training for all camp staff on topics including youth supervision, child development, program planning, conflict resolution, first aid, CPR, and additional certification for specialized program delivery. The resident camp ratio of staff to campers in fourth grade and above is 1:8; and, for second and third grade, it’s 1:6 with a ratio of 1:6 for high-adventure programs. The day camp ratio is 1:10 and for aquatic activities, it is 1:8.

WHAT CAMP HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS ARE MAINTAINED?

All GSGLA camps meet the health and safety standards and guidelines established by Girl Scouts of the USA and the State of California. Copies of the California Health Department’s inspections are kept on file at council offices.
