Spending too much money in retirement is a common fear. Yet, some retirees struggle with the opposite challenge – they spend too little.
As many retirees are responsible for managing their income and ensuring it lasts, there is a real danger of overspending and facing a shortfall in your later years. However, underspending can be dangerous in a different way. It could mean you don’t get the most out of your retirement despite working hard to achieve financial security later in life.
Switching from a saving to a spending mindset
One of the key challenges for some retirees is that they need to change how they view and use money when they enter retirement.
For decades, you may have prioritised building your wealth. However, many people start to deplete the assets they’ve built up in retirement. Even though you’ve diligently saved so you can use your assets now, it can be difficult to switch to a spending mindset. After all, you may have developed positive saving habits over the years that are difficult to break.
4 reasons why financial planning could help you spend more in retirement
While you may think of financial planning as focusing on growing your wealth, it’s about creating a plan that helps you reach life goals. There are several ways financial planning could help you spend more, including:
1. Assessing how long assets need to last: One of the difficulties of knowing how much to spend in retirement is that it’s impossible to know how long your assets need to provide an income. Considering life expectancy is a key part of a financial plan. This means you can understand what spending is sustainable for you.
2. Demonstrating how the value of your assets could change: A useful financial planning tool is cashflow forecasting. It can help you visualise how different decisions will affect the value of your assets. If you’re frugal in retirement because you’re worried about the long-term effects, cashflow forecasting could demonstrate how your decisions will affect your finances in the short and long term.
3. Creating a reliable income if it’s right for you: Some retirees struggle with the uncertainty of their retirement income. For example, if you use flexi-access drawdown to access your pension, investment returns could affect its value. There are ways to create a reliable income and some will find this provides peace of mind.
4. Giving you someone to turn to: Even with a financial plan in place, there may be times when you still need some reassurance. Once you have a financial plan in place, regular reviews with your financial planner can help you keep it up to date.

Losing
Two new members joined us after a FREE Learn to Sing Course in 2022 and are now happily part of the VFA family and learning a whole new repertoire.
Our repertoire is now expanding from barbershop, popular song & musicals to Sea Shanties and Folksongs – there are so many wonderful arrangements to choose from and they are great source of inspiration not just musically but also for working and crafting the voice. Our most recent songs have
been The Drunken Sailor arr Parker/Shaw and a beautiful setting of the poem ‘She moved through the fair’ by Timothy Takach. We have also learnt The Wellerman and are beginning a setting of the well-known Shenandoah arr K Schraeder.
Over the last few months, we have added a couple of Disney songs – what’s not to like? We have started with ‘ The Bare Necessities’ and ‘You’re Welcome’ from Moana & will add to these during 2023.
Being an acapella group the discipline to learn is high but the rewards are fantastic and we would love to see more of you men singing and enjoying the camaraderie of this wonderful hobby……….basses especially!
Come and sit in on any of our Wednesday evening rehearsals at Dial Post Village Hall RH13 8NH from 7.15 or hear us at our next concert on Saturday 7 October at St Peter’s in Henfield. Check out www. vocalfusionacapella.co.uk

Born in Trinidad 1901, Cyril Lionel Robert James was a historian,
political activist and writer, who sometimes used the pen name J. R. Johnson for his works. C.L.R James was a pioneering voice in postcolonial literature and his novel ‘Minty Alley’ written in the late 1920s was the first novel by a black West Indian man to be published in Britain, where it received good reviews for its sensitive portrayals of black working class characters, particularly women.
C.L.R. James was born in Trinidad in 1901. As a child attending school in Port of Spain, he distinguished himself as an athlete and was a club cricketer. In the 1920s while teaching English and history, he began to have success as a writer of short stories. He was at this time a member of a circle of anticolonialist writers – ‘The Beacon Group’. In the early 1930s, C.L.R James was a cricket correspondent on the Manchester Guardian before moving to London. His 1936 stage play ‘Toussaint Louverture, The Story of the Only Successful Slave Revolt in History’ was produced in London’s West End in 1936 staring Hollywood’s Paul Robeson, the actor and civil rights campaigner. He followed it up with a second successful play ‘The Black Jacobins’ about the general Francois-Dominique Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution. It has since become a famous work of Black history, detailing the only successful mass revolt by slaves against the French. Having been born a slave, Louverture is now known as the Father of Haiti. Whilst living in London C.L.R. James corresponded with other literary figures of the time including Edith Sitwell.
C.L.R. James was involved with politics, writing non-fiction books about both the Bolsheviks and the Haitian revolutions. His book ‘World Revolution’ charted the rise and fall of the Communist International. He travelled to the US, invited by the Socialist Workers’ Party to support America’s black
workers in their fight against discrimination. He met Leon Trotsky in Mexico and also the artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. While being detained on Ellis Island after overstaying his US visa he wrote a book about the novelist Herman Melville, famous for ‘Moby Dick’.
In the late 1950s C.L.R. James returned to Trinidad for a time where he edited The Nation newspaper. Back in the UK, he wrote a 1963 memoir ‘Beyond A Boundary’ about his cricketing experiences. Later he championed the voices of other black writers especially women such as Toni Morrison, Ntozake Shange and Alice Walker.
In 1937 C.L.R. James lived at Old Shoreham Road, Southwick. A letter intercepted by Special Branch at the time has recently conformed this fact. As he was politically a socialist, the police had kept tabs on his movements at that time, as they had also done with other prominent left-wing figures. C.L.R. James campaigned for the free government of the West Indies, writing ‘The Case for West Indian Self Government.’ While staying at Southwick he played cricket for the West Hoathley village team. He died in Brixton, South London in 1989 and was buried in Trinidad. A blue plaque dedicated to him was unveiled at his Southwick address in March 2023.

This October, we’re asking the public to join us for an exciting fundraising event that will see first-timers and veterans alike rappelling 90ft down the face of a seaside cliff!
Please get the date in your diary! On Saturday 7 October 2023, we are holding a sponsored abseiling event in partnership with West Sussex Mind. Participants will be given the chance to descend the chalk face of Peacehaven Cliffs, a lovely location with great views of the coastline. Whether you’re after a shot of adrenaline or looking to fulfil a lifelong ambition, now’s your chance!
Of course, you’ll also be raising vital funds for two important local charities. Safe in Sussex, helps people affected by domestic abuse, it was founded as Worthing Women’s Aid in 1977 by a group of women who helped local victims of abuse by offering them refuge. Our services include 4 confidential refuges, dispersed accommodation flats as places of refuge, and several education and outreach programmes,
including Hope2Recovery, the Freedom Programme and The Recovery Toolkit – all designed to help those escaping abuse and those wanting to rebuild their lives.
We also have IDVA’s (Independent Domestic Violence Advisors) that give one to one support to people who are currently in an abusive relationship.
Our partners at this event are West Sussex Mind, they support people with their mental health and campaigns to reduce stigma and promote understanding. They offer advice and support to improve people’s physical and mental well-being, with the aim of strengthening their self-esteem, confidence and relationships. They also help people get into education, training or work and achieve their personal and social goals. They are a independent charity and receive no funding from the national Mind charity.

Sunday 4th June saw the Lions Annual Family Fun Day in Buckingham Park, Shoreham, which was their biggest ever event!
On Sunday the 9th July, Adur East Lions held their annual ‘handover’ event. This event, usually attended by all the Club Members and their partners, is where the current President formerly hands over their chain of office to the incoming President.
Celebrating the event over a cream tea, outgoing President Lion Frances Burt can be seen handing over the chain of office to Lion David Sluys. Lion David joined the Lions in 2019, as COVID hit the world, so says he is only now experiencing a full unrestricted year of Lions activities. Whilst David will be President until July 2024, he has already held the office of South-east District Childhood Cancer Projects Coordinator for the past few years. In this role, he has arranged events including a Charity Golf Day at Worthing Golf Club (now in it’s third year), and he has also undertaken several sponsored runs for the cause.
David says he is looking forward to his year as President, saying “We have had a great twelve months under Frances’ leadership and I will do everything in my power to maintain the standard. We are always looking for new Members and Friends and we are always open to new ideas about service activities and fundraising”.
David would also very much like to establish a local Leo Club (young Lions) and will be
Christmas activities in Southwick & Shore ham, not to mention the recent Family Fun Day in Buckingham Park, Shoreham.
David says he is looking forward to meeting as many local residents as possible during his year of Office.

Adur District Council, Brighton & Hove City Council, West Sussex County Council and Shoreham Port Authority are working in partnership to regenerate Shoreham Harbour and the surrounding areas.
The aim of the JAAP is to transform Shoreham Harbour into a vibrant, thriving waterfront destination providing new homes and jobs and by consolidating port activities in the Eastern Harbour Arm to ensure the Shoreham Port continues to play a vital role in the local economy.
The fund is part of more than £750,000 of Government Eco-Towns grant secured by the partnership with Adur benefitting from £290,000 to primarily use to deliver the Shoreham Joint Area Action Plan. Brighton & Hove City Council received £460,000 for sustainability projects.
The funding allocated for Brighton was originally earmarked for a redevelopment project which would achieve the highest standards of sustainability, but as the scheme has not progressed, the partnership has agreed that the funding be split between the regeneration partnership.
Projects which support green travel corridors and active travel and which lie along travel routes close to the harbour will be prioritised, while £100,000 would be made available to local community groups.
The proposal was approved by Brighton & Hove City Council’s new Strategy, Finance & City Regeneration Committee on Thursday, June 22nd, following agreement by the Shoreham Harbour Regeneration partners.
Steve Neocleous, Adur District Council’s
Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Strategic Planning, said:
“Shoreham Harbour is an incredibly important area for Sussex both for residents, businesses and visitors and it is important we give as much support as possible for the economic growth of the region.
“Adur District Council remains totally committed to our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and this is another important project that promotes that target by creating a green corridor.
“I am particularly excited about the opportunity for local groups to apply for funding to enhance biodiversity and greening of the key transport corridors along the harbour.”
Shoreham Harbour is set to benefit from a grant of £300,000 to support climate change and biodiversity projects as part of the Joint Area Action Plan (JAAP) for Shoreham Harbour.
Heritage Open Days is England’s largest community-led festival of history and culture, bringing thousands of local volunteers and organisations together to celebrate heritage, community and history.
Stories are told, traditions explored, and histories brought to life – and it’s all FREE! This year the festival runs from 8th-17th September and, in conjunction with the Shoreham Society, St Mary de Haura is extending a special invitation to people far and wide to come and visit.
As usual the church will be open from 8am until 6pm every day. Over the summer we have a regular pattern of weekly church tours from the middle of June until the end of August, but during the nine days of the festival we are putting on six extra tours on:
Friday 8 September - 3pm
Saturday 9 September - 11am
Monday 11 September - 11am
Tuesday 12 September - 2.30pm
Wednesday 13 September - 2.30pm
Thursday 14 September - 11am
Each tours lasts roughly 45 minutes to an hour and they are free. We do however ask people to book (use this link - https:// www.trybooking.co.uk/CJFU) just so we can manage numbers.
Even if you have been to St Mary’s before, do please consider visiting our lovely Grade 1 listed building during the festival. We
welcome everyone, whether you have a faith or don’t – the church is part of the local community and is open to all. What’s more, you can visit one your own or with friends and family. Come in and look or simply sit and find quiet.!
St Mary’s is the largest church between Brighton and Worthing. In his book ‘England’s Thousand Best Churches’, Simon Jenkins describes it as ‘a magnificent church with a superb Choir, a textbook of comparative 12th century style.’ It is one of the finest examples of what is called ‘transitional’ Norman architecture with features of the typically Romanesque

alongside the Gothic. As part of the tour on Saturday 9th September, a tour of the belfry’s full English style of eight bells will also be running.

Southwick Square has unearthed a blast from the past as it undergoes an exciting transformation to move it into the future.
Work is well underway to revitalise the area and the team from contractor Edburton Construction has discovered a lead time capsule that was buried at the site during the official opening of the original precinct on Saturday 29th April 1961.
The capsule was found whilst carefully removing the commemorative stone in the pond. Inside it contained newspaper cuttings from the Shoreham Herald and the Brighton and Hove Herald, as well as a Southwick Urban District Council 1960/61 yearbook and a programme to mark the laying of the stone.
The stone was laid by Lt Col Sir Herbert Shiner, the chairman of West Sussex County Council, and blessed by Reverend RJ Leave, the Rector of Southwick, in front of residents and VIP guests during the opening ceremony.
The capsule is set to be put on display for the public to view at the museum, run by the Southwick Society at the Manor Cottage Heritage Centre, Southwick Street and then be reburied with a new capsule containing modern-day items when the work is completed around mid-August.
And we want the community to get involved by coming up with ideas of what they would like to see in the present-day capsule. Details of how to have your say will be posted on Adur District Council’s Facebook page in the coming weeks. Mary Candy, the chairperson for the Southwick Society, said:
“It is very exciting to uncover a time capsule during the redevelopment. Southwick Urban District Council was a very forward-thinking council with ambitious plans for Southwick in the 60s.
“It is great that they had the foresight to bury these items for future generations to find. Of course they had no idea how long the capsule would remain hidden and whilst there will be some people who remember the opening of the square, the majority will not.
“We would be very happy to display it in the museum whilst the redevelopment continues, to give the public an opportunity to see it before it is reburied. We have a cinefilm of the opening of the Square which we show in the museum, which would tie in very nicely.
“If it is not to be reburied then we would be happy to give it a permanent home in our archive.”
Steve Neocleous, Adur District Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Strategic Planning, added:
“This is a real find by the team working to regenerate Southwick
Square and looking back to when the original shopping precinct was open highlights how important the work is to bring it into the 21st Century.
“It really is a slice of local history and putting it on display in the heritage centre is a wonderful idea that will give residents and history buffs the chance to see what it looked like when it was officially opened more than 60 years ago.
“And when the regeneration work is complete, I think it is a great idea to ask the community to give us their ideas of what items from 2023 they would like to see buried in it, so that in another 60 or 70 years people can see the huge changes that have taken place in their neighbourhood.
Work to revamp the area started in April and has gathered pace in recent weeks. The current work is being funded by £87,000 from Adur District Council and up to £600,000 from West Sussex County Council as part of the Adur Growth Deal, a five-year partnership programme of regeneration between the two councils.

It’s almost unimaginable that almost 8-years have passed since the 2015 Airshow accident.
Following the Inquest, and the recent rejection of the pilot’s request for a Judicial Review, it is all finally concluded which must be a huge relief for all of the bereaved families.
Our website, www.shorehamairshow.co.uk has remained active as a mark of our respect and shows the farewell message where the Directors of the Airshow company wish to thank the huge number of volunteers who helped during the many shows that raised such a significant amount of money for excellent causes.

These three images from my holiday in Fuerteventura last year are all displaying a simplicity of design.
Whether you are taking a vacation or a ‘staycation’ this Summer, you will be hoping for long, sunny days.
As a photographer, I particularly look forward to sunny evenings when the shadows grow longer as the sun gradually lowers in the sky. The reason that I love shadows is that, in my opinion, they can add interest to images or even become the subject matter. The low light can also add mood and atmosphere to certain scenes.
The images on this page were taken over recent years in Brighton. They are very different pictures but all have two important things in common.
All would only have been possible with low evening light to throw the shadows, and all require the camera to be pointing downwards - obvious, you may think, but in my experience, photographers often neglect to look up or down for possible subject matter. Most photographs are taken at eye level, looking straight ahead. Try to be different, try to be creative with your images, take your time with framing and composition, shoot from various angles and heights, experiment, and see what works for you. As I have said before, it doesn’t really matter if you have an expensive SLR camera or a cameraphone,
they all do the same basic task of recording whatever is in front of the lens. You indeed have greater control with an SLR, but most people own smartphones, so if you want a ‘point and shoot.’ they do the job very well. They also offer a range of postprocessing filters that can enhance (but also ruin) your images. If you wish to play around with the filters, make sure you save the original first so that if it all goes horribly wrong, you can start again.

Eight green spaces in Adur and Worthing have again been awarded the Green Flag for their successful management, great quality and achieving the highest environmental standards.
In Adur Lancing Manor, Buckingham Park, Lancing Ring and Shoreham Beach have all once again retained the honour, while Beach House Park, Field Place, Highdown Gardens and Marine Gardens in Worthing won the coveted award again.
Launched in 1996, the Green Flag Award is the national benchmark for parks and green spaces designed to encourage the provision of good quality public parks and green spaces that are managed in environmentally sustainable ways.
Cllr Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “It’s brilliant news that four of our treasured open spaces have been recognised for the distinguished Green Flag award.
“Our green spaces are so valuable to our communities, and this award is evidence of all the hard work our teams and fabulous
volunteers have invested into our parks.”
Cllr Vicki Wells, Worthing Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, added: “The emotional impact of the pandemic on mental wellbeing can’t be underestimated.
“Combined with the urgency to support biodiversity and nature during the ecological and climate crisis, Council teams and local volunteers in Worthing’s parks and open spaces go from strength to strength.
“These amazing people are crucial to help maintain these wonderful green spaces. Importantly, they also support each other and nature for the benefit of all Worthing residents and visitors.
“A Green Flag award reflects this passion, dedication and commitment and I applaud each and every group for the incredible results. I thoroughly recommend a trip to Highdown Gardens, Marine Gardens, Field Place and Beach House Park to enjoy some quality time with nature.”
The Green Flag Award Scheme, managed by Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, sets the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor
spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world. Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag status with volunteer judges deciding on each successful site.
Each award winning park must be deemed to be a welcoming place, healthy, safe and secure, well maintained and clean, while also meeting criteria such as sustainability, conservation and heritage and have community involvement. This year has seen 2,216 parks honoured - the largest number since the scheme began 27 years ago.
