ICLEI : COMMUNITY SQUARE

Project Background

The site for the Iclei community square project is located, Tanzania. Situated on a space restricted and residential surrounded, faced the challenge of a limited budget. The brief was to create a diverse public space environment that offers a stimulating of the local economy.

Design Philosophy

The design focused on creating a safe and engaging environment for the public space, that promotes economic growth and accessibility.

Spaces include open multifuctional lawn spaces for reappropriation of space, including spaces for communal public play.

Planting included Tanzanian native species, such as grasses, bulbs, and succulents. Vegetable garden spaces were designed with plants selected for food security for locals.

The project complied with standards for vegetation clearance, topsoil and tree management, stormwater management, and surface upkeep.

Challenges and Lessons

This project provided extensive knowledge of Tanzanian environmental legislation and implementation guidelines. I gained experience designing public space components that comply with SANS standards for composting facilities and managing soil conditions. The project deepened my understanding of creating needs-driven, diverse public environments and working with indigenous plant species.
