here do you start? When you’re weighing in at 457 pounds and you’ve been overweight for most of your adult life, what diet do you embrace to help stop the madness?

The date was February 7, 2012. Rhonda Martin, originally from Iowa but by then living in San Diego, made a conscious decision NOT to go on another diet. Why? Because she had tried them all and success had still eluded her. Oh sure, there would be some weight loss for a month or four, but eventually Martin would revert to her old patterns and the weight would come storming back.

“I was dealing with sleep apnea and high blood pressure,” she admits. “I couldn’t take 150 steps at a time without being out of breath and having to stop.”

She realized that this time she had to change everything; and that long-term health doesn’t come from the latest fad diet, it comes from a total lifestyle change.

“That’s when it clicked in for me,” says Martin.

“I started drinking two to three protein shakes per day, plus eating three healthy meals. I started counting calories and bought a pedometer. Then I challenged myself to take 100 more steps than the day before.”

In her garage she had an electric bicycle that she had barely used. That soon changed. “I started riding the electric bicycle to and from work a few times a week,” she continues. “I’d pedal for a while, rest up and then pedal some more. By

riding the electric bike, I also had two full hours a day of me time. I loved that.”

By totally changing the way she lived her life, Martin was happier and healthier than she had ever been. When she realized that she had plateaued, Martin hired a personal trainer to work out with two to three days a week and he recommended that she sign up for her first triathlon.

Triathlon? Isn’t that a sport for an uber-athlete, not someone like Rhonda Martin who was looking to lose some weight and get into basic fitness?

Not quite. While being overweight makes it hard on the joints when you run, non-weight bearing sports like swimming and cycling can become the perfect fitness activities. Her first triathlon was a 500-yard swim, a 9-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run in the spring of 2014. “When I came across the finish line of that first triathlon, I can’t put how I was feeling into words,” she says. “I was in awe.”

Rhonda Martin also discovered a little known fact: She was competitive!

By the end of her first summer as a triathlete, she had completed four events, had lost 277 pounds since February of 2012, got her weight down to 180 pounds and took third place at the San Diego Triathlon Classic in the Athena Division. “I remember my trainer saying to me while he was looking at the results sheet: ‘You’ve got to come look at this. You’re third!’ I was in shock.”

NutritionPlace Which Carbs When?

T

he most important times to eat carbohydrate are before running and after running. Carbs eaten before a run provide quick energy to the muscles and nervous system and also act on the brain in a way that makes running feel easier. Carbs eaten after a run replenish muscle fuel stores and set you up to feel and perform better in your next run.

Some sources of carbohydrate work better than others for pre-run fueling. When you take in carbs less than 45 minutes before a run, they should come from high-glycemic, rapidly digested foods that don’t contain a lot of fat, fiber, or protein. This way you’ll get the energy you need without increasing your risk of experiencing GI distress during the run.

After exercise, it’s best to eat foods containing carbs that are metabolized more slowly, to provide lasting energy, as well as protein, which works synergistically with carbohydrate to accelerate muscle refueling and rebuilding. Here are a few examples of some of the best carbohydrate sources for before and after a run.

BEFORE

> Applesauce

Call it nature’s energy gel. Applesauce is easy on the stomach and packs 13 grams of carbs into a half-ounce serving. Be sure to purchase products containing no added sugar.

> Banana

Perhaps the most popular pre-race food, bananas have it all—a convenient natural wrapper, high digestibility, and lots of carbs (27 grams per medium banana). Studies have even shown they enhance performance when eaten during exercise.

AFTER

> Oatmeal

There’s no better way to refuel after a morning run than with a breakfast of old-fashioned oatmeal. Add almonds or walnuts for a little extra protein. Sweeten it with a bit of honey or real maple syrup.

> Yogurt

Dairy products are ideal recovery foods because they contain carbs for muscle refueling, protein for muscle repair, and fats to make the carbs last longer. One cup of plain, whole-milk yogurt contains 11 grams of carbs and 9 grams of protein and has a very low glycemic index of 14. And yes, I do recommend eating plain wholemilk yogurt because it’s less processed and is less likely to contain added sugar. Flavor it by adding fresh fruit and perhaps a bit of honey.

Best Trails to Run in Orange County

range County is home to beautiful trails that offer incredible ocean views to areas you never knew existed in the OC. These trails are a good way to get away from the crazy traffic and overcrowding of Southern California and to see what hidden gems Orange County has waiting to be discovered.

BLACK STAR CANYON TO SKYLINE

Black Star Canyon trailhead is by Irvine Lake and heads up and over to the Skyline trailhead in Corona. This trail is for more advanced runners because it’s an out-and-back trail on a fire road, which goes uphill until you get to the Skyline trailhead. If you head out Skyline and go down to make it a round trip, it would be about a 24-mile run. If it’s a hot day, be careful because there is no water and very few trees on the trail. There aren’t any bathrooms either.

There are a lot of mountain bikers and hikers, but you will rarely see someone running it.

EL MORRO CANYON

El Morro Canyon is a beautiful run because you can see the ocean pretty much the entire run. It is located up in the hills of Newport Beach, right above Crystal Cove, and overlooks the ocean. The run is hilly and mostly on road with a few singletrack trails. It’s a loop run that gives you the option to go on either the longer or shorter loop. There are lots of runners and cyclists and has bathrooms and water along the way. It is a great run to do on a hot day because of the ocean breeze.

CARBON CANYON/ CHINO HILLS STATE PARK

Carbon Canyon is a trail in Chino Hills State Park. It is mainly fire roads with some singletrack trails. It has rolling hills and not that many trees for shade. There is a campground you can run by that will have water and bathrooms.

There are usually other runners and mountain bikers on this trail.

ALISO WOODS

The Aliso Woods Trail is located in Aliso Viejo and Laguna Hills. You can access it from both sides of Laguna Hills and in Aliso Viejo. The trail has beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean, which

makes it a popular trail for mountain bikers, walkers and hikers. This trail is a great way to connect to other trails that are located along the beach and has rolling hills with a few steep hills. It’s usually dry, so make sure to bring enough water, especially on hot days.

HOLY JIM TRAIL

Holy Jim Trail is a hilly out-and-back trail with a lot of switchbacks and is located in Trabuco Canyon. You will find plenty of mountain bikers and hikers along this trail. There are streams along the way and the trail has trees that provide shade and overhead coverage. You will be hiking uphill on the way out and downhill on the way back. The trail will connect you to the Upper Holy Jim Trail, which will take you to Santiago Peak if you wanted to make your trail run longer. You have to drive off-road in order to get to the trailhead, so plan accordingly.

There are plenty more trails in Orange County, but these are a few of my favorites! I hope you get the chance to get out there and try them out! Happy trails!

THE CARLSBAD 5000 IS CONSIDERED THE ‘WORLD’S FASTEST 5K.’

he 31st annual Carlsbad 5000, a Rock ‘n’ Roll Signature Event, will be held this year on the weekend of April 2-3. The Carlsbad 5000 will feature live music along the course with a headliner concert at the finish line.

Originally established in 1986, the Carlsbad 5000 is considered the ‘World’s Fastest 5K.’ This party by the sea will take runners on a scenic course along the Pacific Ocean finishing at Carlsbad Village Drive and State Street. Upon completing the race, runners can enjoy two post race

Pizza Port beers, while rocking out to a headliner concert at the finish line festival.

The headliner will be announced at a later date.

This year’s event features two days of running. Sunday’s races include a 5K distance and the larger 20K distance, beginning at 7:00 am. Both of those races start at Jefferson Street and Grand Avenue.

Saturday hosts the 1 Mile run and Junior Carlsbad 5000, featuring distances from ¼ mile to 1 mile. Junior Carlsbad 5000 is for children up to 12 years old and also fea-

Runners are encouraged to give meaning to their miles by registering as a St. Jude Hero. By fundraising for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, participants will receive guaranteed free race entry and other benefits such as catered food and beverage and private gear check.
