DLSU Center for Engineering and Sustainable Development Research (CESD)R The Center for Engineering and Sustainable Development Research, or CESDR is the research arm of the DLSU-Manila Gokongwei College of Engineering (GCOE). It is mandated to promote, catalyze and crystallize scientific activities in engineering sciences and technology to achieve strategic advances in complex engineered systems and firm-level technologies necessary for the sustainable development of the country. The center has seven (7) sub-centers or research units, all engaging in engineering research and technology innovations.

DISASTER RESILIENCE UNIT “Addressing Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) & Climate Change Adaptation (CCA)” CESDR Disaster Resilience (Short title for “Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation” or DRR-CCA) research group is an initiative by the GCOE to serve as one of research, development and services extension group of DLSU to support the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction Law (RA 10121) in its pro-active and holistic approach to reduce the impact of disasters.

VISION: The research unit envisions itself as a resource to country actively engaged in resilience building in communities, their built and natural environment through disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

MISSION: The research unit aims to advance knowledge, conduct research and promote best practices in resilience building though disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, especially involving complex environments.

Our efforts are focused on how to reduce or avoid hazards and reduce vulnerabilities so that we can reduce disaster risks. Reduced disaster risks lead to safer structures and improved safety to the people.

Reduced disaster risks also lead to sustainability since there will be less damage to infrastructures and less wastage of resources and less impact to the people which translates to better living conditions.

When we protect our people, assets and infrastructures, we promote the people’s resilience and health, preserve our resources and maintain the balance between built and natural environment. Our research subthemes are: Understanding Hazards

Include researches, studies on phenomena, historical profiling, modelling, instrumentation and monitoring aimed at better understanding of phenomena and their impacts

Includes studies, researches on various aspects of disaster vulnerability and risk assessment, survey and evaluation methods: principles, tools and application

Planning for Risks

Includes structural and engineering technologies and applications aimed to improve building and infrastructural resilience through robust designs, structural health monitoring & retrofitting

Includes land use planning and zoning, community disaster risk awareness and preparedness, urban redevelopment/urban renewal, community early warning and monitoring, emergency management

The lightning bolt symbol represents a warning of a potential disaster. Whenever one sees lightning, we are reminded to take precaution to reduce the risk against the danger. DRR or Disaster Risk Reduction aims to mitigate the negative and damaging impacts of hazards. A lightning is also related to climate since it occurs during thunder storms. CCA or Climate Change Adaptation is a pro-active response to the increasing impact of climate related hazards.
