For an age of anxiety

Program Notes: Messages on social media, politicians forced to wear 24 hour cameras, world wide security cameras recordin complidata servers, th
g message move etc. To make matters even more e Edward Snowden NSA case was just breaking
into the world media at the time I was reading The Circle. How much privacy do we have the right to? Hotransparency in ou
r digital lives? How far should the
government take these ideas? How much should we be forced to percussionrt out to the control and manipulate the band like buttons on a keyboard. This speaks to the way technology manipulates and control us. Here ar
feel
communicatee their:
Conductor notes: This piece is aleatoric and out of tempo. Players constantly repeat each cued measure until the next cue is given. Any long notes should be treated like a fermata. Show the cue numbers by raising your left hand high, while using your right hand to conduct tempo and style changes when needed.
Percussion notes: This piece is designed for large percussion sections in mind where each player covers one instrument. However, it is adaptable for smaller sections. If you even have as little as two percussion players, Button 1 and Button 2 are the most important parts to be covered. The Button 1 player can use a snare stick to play a triangle hanging from a clamp. The Button 2 player can use one large mallet in one hand for the bass drum, and one small soft mallet in the other hand to play the tambourine and woodblock on a trap table.
Other Notes: This piece is an adaption of the beginning of my MS band piece B/lurt, an expanded dive into this same anxiety-ridden world. This piece also shares commonalities with my commissioned pieces Little Black Box (MS Band) and Black Box (HS Band), experimental works where students are deliberately mislead by false truths in the music and confront the power hierarchy of the composer-conductor-player relationship in an ensemble.
