What is Sperm Washing Thu. 1/5/2023 by androwash androwash
Sperm washing is a laboratory procedure that separates sperm cells from the seminal fluid and other components of semen. It is commonly performed prior to intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilisation (IVF) to improve the chances of pregnancy. There are several techniques for sperm washing, including basic sperm wash, premium wash, and swim-up technique.
Basic sperm wash involves dilution and centrifugation to eliminate the seminal fluid and concentrate the sperm cells. Premium wash uses density gradient centrifugation to isolate and purify motile sperm. Swim-up technique involves adding a layer of fresh media to the semen sample and allowing the motile sperm to swim into it. The washed sperm is then used for IUI or IVF. Sperm washing may be recommended in cases of immune system disorders, male-factor infertility, or unexplained infertility.
