Scheltema & Co (Pty) Ltd

Scheltema & Co (Pty) Ltd was incorporated in 1933 by Cornelius Scheltema a Dutch immigrant who set up business in Cape Town as a supplier of imported roofing tiles and other building products. Before long the demand for the company's products led to the establishment of what is the oldest surviving roofing and ceiling contracting company in the Western Cape and more than likely in Southern Africa. As such it has developed relationships with clients, suppliers, and staff that go back many years and in many cases span a few generations.

Port of Cape Town Port Volumes: Port of Cape Town, Table Bay, the Fairest Cape, the Cape of Storms, the Cape of Good Hope, the Mother City. All these names provide an idea of what to expect. Cape Town competes with Alexandria for recognition as the most famous port in Africa and is certainly one of the most beautiful harbours in the world with a magnificent backdrop of Table Mountain framed by the mountainous Peninsular. The port is situated on one of the world's busiest trade routes and will always retain strategic and economic importance for that reason alone.

Cape Town is also a busy container port, second in South Africa only to Durban, and handles the largest amount of fresh fruit.

During the recent 2008/09 financial year Cape Town handled 3,163 vessels for a gross tonnage of 53,609,895-gt. Total cargo handled at the port (excluding containers) was 2,969,417 tonnes, of which 2,639,337 tonnes was bulk cargo, and 330,080t breakbulk. As with the other ports these figures do not include container tonnage, which is estimated as being 10.452 million tonnes for 2008/09 (calculated on the basis of an average 13.5t per TEU), giving the port a total tonnage handled of 13.422 million tonnes. Excluding containers, total imports were 1,880,943t and exports 1,001,448t, with transshipments of 87,026 tonnes. Cape Town's Container Terminal handled a total of 774,238 TEUs during the fiscal year 2008/09, of which 385,504 TEUs were imports and 388,734 exports. Transships constituted 60,132 and 62,573 TEUs of those amounts respectively.
