Check your hosting It s important to make sure that you are with a reputable hosting provider, and that you are on a server with other reputable websites, check to see what websites are hosted on your server, if they re dodgy you might want to think about moving to another hosting solution. Review your mobile experience We ve reached a point where more people are viewing websites on their mobile device than they are on their desktop/laptop, therefore you need to be providing visitors with a mobile optimised website. Google is also giving mobile friendly sites a boost in the search results. Run a site: yourwebsite.com search on your mobile device to see if you re site is tagged as mobile friendly , if it s not then it s time to create a mobile friendly site. 9. Check your sitemap.xml and robots.txt file A sitemap.xml file lists the pages that the search engines will find within your website, it also provides information that includes the update frequency of pages. The search engine bots will look for a sitemap.xml file and you need to check that you have one, it should be located at: yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml A robots.txt file is an instruction file for the search engines, check that you have one at yourwebsite.com/robots.txt and check that it is not disallowing pages that it should be allowing. 10. Review your backlinks Backlinks are very important when it comes to search engine optimisation, you need to check your backlink profile and the websites that are linking to your website, make sure they are relevant and from reputable websites. If you find some dodgy looking sites, then you can flag these in your Google Webmaster Tools.
