Tigers rally to beat Hart in physical game
Shelby seniors get 1st career win in rivalry series
The Tigers (5-6-3, 3-4 WMC) regrouped during the break and came out largely controlling possession. They narrowly missed a goal very early in the Hart (5-8-1, 1-6 West Michi- half on a run at the net when the By Andy Roberts gan Conference) led 1-0 at the shot hit a post. The Tigers, though, were the ones who got the last laugh, as Shelby forward Amy England scored two second-half goals to push the hosts to a 2-1 win. It was the first time the Shelby senior soccer players had beaten Hart. “The senior girls really wanted this win against Hart,” Shelby coach Pete Peterson said. “I think we came out so hyped up about that that we forgot what we were doing. Once they got going, things took off. Amy putting that (first goal) in was a big help.”

Spartans get best of Tigers Shelby softball gets split By Andy Roberts Herald-Journal Writer
SHELBY — Shelby had “one of those days”, said coach Brian Wright, on the way to a doubleheader loss to Mason County Central Tuesday, 6-0 and 8-0.
The Tigers (10-18, 3-11 West Michigan Conference) were able to put the ball in play in both games, only striking out five times for the day, but whenever Shelby hit the ball, it seemed to find a Spartans’ defender. Shelby managed only
six hits in the two games. “We gave them a few unearned runs in the first game, but in the second game we didn’t make an error,” Wright said. “It’s not like we played poorly. Sometimes you have days like that in baseball.” In game one, the Tigers had four hits, two of them by Jamie Rupright. Zach Stuberg and

At left, the Tigers’ Dustin Carlson-Hicks (16) tries to stay out of the way after popping up to the MCC pitcher during game two. The Shelby softball team earned a split, while MCC swept the baseball games.
Dustin Carlson-Hicks each had a hit as well. Kris Josephson took the loss on the hill, striking out four and allowing 11 hits. In game two, Carlson-Hicks took the mound and got out of a bases-loaded one-out jam
in the first inning by getting a double play grounder. After Jonah Kelley ripped a double to lead off the second inning, it appeared Shelby would capitalize on the big defensive play, but the Tigers couldn’t get Kelley in. MCC would tag two
runs each onto the board in the second and third innings and never looked back. The Spartans scored twice in the sixth to salt the game away.
