September–October 2014

A Note from Pam Over the summer, Carla, Michele, Shelly and Sheila were very busy planning a wide variety of classes, trips, and programs for the fall. You’ll want to be sure to attend the Thursday at the J Kick-Off Program on September 18 featuring Chris Nicola, cave explorer and author. Mr. Nicola will speak about his book, The Secret of Priest’s Grotto, and his involvement in the powerful and inspiring documentary, “No Place on Earth.” Complete details about the program can be found on page 4. Registration will open for the Adult Learning Institute’s (ALI) Fall Semester on Tuesday, September 2. A registration table will be in the lobby the week of September 8 so you can learn about the many classes being offered and register to attend. Class descriptions begin on page 6. We are again partnering with INOVA HealthSource to hold a Flu Shot Clinic at the JCCNV on Thursday, September 11. See details on page 4. I want to thank everyone who returned the adult program survey that was inserted in the last issue of The Voice. If you have not yet completed the survey, please do so, and return it as soon as possible. For your convenience, we have posted the survey on the Adult Services page of our website (www.jccnv.org). You can print and complete the form and return it to the J. As you read The Voice, please take note of the businesses that advertise in the newsletter, and consider patronizing them when you have a need for such services. Their support contributes to our ability to produce this publication. L’shanah tovah,

Fall 2014 Thursday at the JCCNV Kick-Off Event “No Place on Earth” Documentary with pre-film presentation by Chris Nicola, Cave Explorer Thursday, September 18, noon–2:45pm Noon: Lunch, please bring dairy or parve/meatless, special dessert buffet provided 12:45pm: Program Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, (703) 537-3095 Speaker sponsored by Classic Nurses Services, Inc. Charles E. Antwi, RN BSN, Owner Mr. Nicola is a cave explorer who came across artifacts of daily living in a system of caves in Ukraine. His presentation here at the JCCNV will describe this caving experience; his book, The Secret of Priest’s Grotto; and his involvement in the making of the documentary, “No Place On Earth.” This unbelievable film describes how, in 1942, five Jewish families in Ukraine (38 men, women and children) descended into caves to hide from pursuing Nazis and lived in near-total darkness for 500 days – the longest uninterrupted underground survival ever recorded. It wasn’t until 1993, when Chris Nicola was mapping out the largest cave system in Ukraine, that evidence was first

discovered of this amazing story. This harrowing story of families living in near-total darkness in two cold, damp caves was captured in this 2013 documentary by filmmaker Janet Tobias. The film also features interviews with survivors and their descendants, and includes a segment in which the director brings some of the survivors, the oldest of whom is in his 90s, back into the caves. Be sure to join us for this unbelievable story of courage and perseverance as told by Mr. Nicola and featured in this very special documentary film. Fee: $8/ $5 member (includes dessert buffet, coffee and tea) Code: #5176 RSVP Required: Submit payment and registration form to the JCCNV, Attn: Michele Endick. Mizrahi, Ph.D., retired Defense Department expert on defense technology and arms control, and lifelong Judaism scholar and teacher According to a popular Jewish saying during the Middle Ages, “From Moses [of the Torah] to Moses [Maimonides], there was none like Moses.” Indeed, Moses Maimonides (Rambam), a twelfth-century Egyptian-Jewish rabbi, philosopher and physician, was one of the greatest and most

widely studied Jewish scholars of all time. This three-part series will cover his turbulent life and times and some of his monumental work, including his Mishneh Torah, a comprehensive codification of Jewish law; his Guide for the Perplexed, addressing certain contradictions between philosophy and religion; his thirteen principles of faith (one of which, the belief in the ultimate coming of the Messiah, was often recited by Jews on their way to the gas chambers); his eight levels of tzedakah, and much more. Maimonides was bold and controversial, but profoundly influential, and his legacy still thrives today. Fee: $36/ $24 member Code: #5347

“Chailights” Jewish history was made and Gainesville rocked on June 18! A record number of Greater Gainesville area residents turned out for a fabulous program by Rabbi Rose Jacob, spiritual leader of Fauquier Jewish Congregation, called “Ever Wonder Where Jewish Humor Came From?” Many came to the Stonewall Golf Club for dinner before the program for extra time to get acquainted and schmooze. Even more people joined us for Rabbi Rose’s program and a wonderful dessert buffet, specially prepared by Stonewall’s chef for our group. Rabbi Rose had us in stitches with her program, which was interesting, informative and hysterically funny. That Rabbi Rose has got talent! The evolution of the JCCNV/Greater Gainesville Active Adult group was also recounted, starting with the grassroots initiative of several Gainesville area residents, the formation of the Greater Gainesville Jewish Community Council (GGJCC), and then the group’s current partnership with the JCCNV, which began about a year ago. Founding members of the GGJCC who were present were recognized for their accomplishments, energy and vision. The event’s success was a tribute to their hard work and determination. The Greater Gainesville Area Active Adults had taken over Stonewall’s restaurant for our event. And it turned out that next door, in the ballroom, much to our surprise and theirs, was the Amity Club, a philanthropic social club for active and retired Jewish businessmen (largely from Montgomery County, Maryland), who were enjoying a golf outing at Stonewall’s magnificent golf course. The Amity Club has generously donated to many Jewish organizations in the Greater Washington area. At the Amity Club’s request, Rabbi Rose graciously recited the Motzi (blessing over bread) before their dinner. We were

even treated to a “sales” talk from one of their members who was leading a first-timers trip to Israel for The Jewish Federation. This was certainly a special night for us, for the Stonewall Golf Club, and for Gainesville!

Hot Topic — Global Warming: What You Really Need to Know! Wednesday, October 15, 10:30am–noon Presented by Philip Wirdzek, Executive Director of the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) and former National Energy Manager, EPA Rarely a day goes by that there is not an article in the newspaper or a report on the television about something dealing with global warming. Today’s warming climate can affect our health, water supplies, power, transportation systems, and environment. But what exactly is “global warming” and why is there such controversy about it in today’s world? Phil Wirdzek will join us to lead an interactive program on the scientific, political, and social aspects involved with global warming. What strategies and policies being pursued today are effective and realistic? Is global warming a real threat to our society or just a shift in the world’s climate? These are all questions that will be covered during this extremely important program. While at EPA, Mr. Wirdzek was a leading force in helping the Agency become the major purchaser of green power among all federal agencies. Learn how you can help shape the world for your children and grandchildren!

Programs Hanafi Takeover: A Personal Account of the First Major Terrorist Attack in the Nation’s Capital Tuesday, October 21, 7pm–8:30pm Location: Stonewall Golf Club, 15601 Turtle Point Dr., Gainesville, VA Presented by Paul Green, President of Paul Green Enterprises business management consulting firm and author of “Forgotten Hostages: A Personal Account of Washington’s First Major Terror Attack” On March 9, 1977, Paul Green, along with 125 of his colleagues at B’nai B’rith International’s Washington, DC headquarters, was taken hostage in a violent siege by Hanafi Muslim terrorists. Men and women were shot, stabbed, beaten and assaulted. At the District Building, which was also under siege, future DC mayor Marion Barry almost died from a gunshot wound and a young reporter was killed. A third target, the Islamic Center of Washington, was also violently attacked and multiple hostages were taken. This incident was the first time federal and local law enforcement authorities in the nation’s capital had ever faced such an attack. For 40 harrowing hours, the hostages’ lives hung in the balance. Paul Green will share with us his personal account of this ordeal, which he has written about in his book, Forgotten Hostages: A Personal Account of Washington’s First Major Terror Attack. Copies of Mr. Green’s book will be available for sale. The program includes dessert and a beverage. If you would also like to join us for dinner at Stonewall prior to the program at 5:30pm (a separate charge, from the menu), please include that information in your RSVP.

Fee: $12 (includes program, choice of dessert and beverage) Code: #5499 RSVP: Send checks, payable to JCCNV with “10/21” in the memo line to: Sheila Budoff, JCCNV, 8900 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax, VA 22031.
