of the JCCNV Adult Services Department

May–June 2013

A Note from Pam Staff members of the Adult Department have been busy planning many great programs and exciting day trips to take full advantage of our beautiful spring weather. Upcoming trips include a visit to the Walter’s Art Museum in Baltimore to see “Threshold to the Sacred: The Ark Door of Cairo’s Ben Ezra Synagogue;” the Kennedy Center to see Shear Madness; the National Press Club; and we will travel to Havre de Grace where we will enjoy lunch on a riverboat cruise. Once again, we are offering an AARP Safe Driving Class. This popular class always fills up quickly so register right away as class size is limited. Full details about these activities can be found inside this newsletter. Please mark your calendar for our highly popular sixth Positive Aging Fair scheduled to be held at the JCCNV on Thursday, November 21. We are thrilled to announce that Molly Smith, Artistic Director at Arena Stage, will be the keynote speaker! See page 11 for more details. As you read The Voice, please take note of the businesses that advertise in the newsletter. Their support and funds contribute significantly to our ability to produce this publication. Please consider patronizing our advertisers when you have a need for such services. Shalom,

Special Addition Exhibit: “Threshold to the Sacred: The Ark Door of Cairo’s Ben Ezra Synagogue” Private Tour at Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, Maryland Wednesday, May 1, depart JCCNV 10:15am; return 6:15pm (Note: This additional trip is on a Wednesday) This special exhibit focuses on an intricately decorated and inscribed wood panel from a Torah ark (owned by Walters Art Museum & the Yeshiva University Museum) believed to have come from the famous Ben Ezra Synagogue of Old Cairo (Fostat) Egypt. This synagogue is the site of the great 19th century discovery of the Cairo Geniza, a treasure trove of documents on Medieval Jewish life around the Mediterranean. The exhibit presents Geniza documents, photos of the synagogue and art from Jewish and Muslim artisans along with conservation science research to relate the fascinating “object biography” of the Ark door. This is a must see viewing of a significant Jewish artifact! A version of this exhibit will travel to Yeshiva University Museum in NYC in the fall of 2013. Since “Threshold to the Sacred” is a very small exhibit, we’ve arranged an additional tour of the special small exhibit “New Eyes on America” to be given afterwards. Also, there will be sufficient time to view other exhibits at the museum “on your own” before returning back to JCCNV. Prior to entering the museum, we will have an early lunch in a local restaurant TBD – separate charge, optional. Fee: $28/ $22 JCCNV member (lunch on your own, separate charge)

Jewish Chaplains at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 Thursday, May 2, noon–2pm Noon: Lunch (bring dairy or parve) 12:30pm: Program Presented by William Sager, Active Retiree member; retired Major, US Marine Corps; retired attorney, United States Treasury Department. William Sager, well known to many of our 55+ group, writes and lectures frequently on Marine Corps combat operations in the Pacific and in China, having served in each area as an infantry officer during World War II. His presentation subject “Jewish Chaplains at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941” is adapted from his research paper. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, there were 28 U.S. military chaplains on Oahu, Hawaii. Two Navy chaplains were killed in action. Several more were wounded. The two Jewish chaplains, Chaplain Herbert C. Straus of the Navy and Chaplain Harry Richmond of the Army survived the attack. Time permitting, Bill will also discuss Russian born Rabbi David Goldberg, the first Jewish chaplain to serve in the U.S. Navy and the only Jewish chaplain to serve in the Navy during World War I. Mr. Sager has given us many wonderful talks in the past – all fascinating information and all well received! We thank him again for offering this presentation to our group. Coffee, tea and dessert will be provided. Fee: $3/ Free JCCNV member No RSVP – Just come!

Lincoln’s Cottage – Private Tour Monday, May 6, depart JCCNV 9:45am; return 2:30pm During the Civil War, President Lincoln lived in a cottage on the grounds of the Soldiers’ Home from June into November to escape the heat and distractions of life at the White House. The tranquil surroundings offered refreshing breezes and relative privacy during a period when the President confronted all-consuming decisions about military strategy, domestic policy, and foreign relations, and could not escape Washington or his responsibilities. At the Soldiers’ Home, Lincoln made some of the momentous decisions that defined his presidency. He met and consulted with Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, Secretary of State William Seward, Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, and many others. He also formulated his thoughts on freedom that became the Emancipation Proclamation. On his daily rides between the Cottage and the White House—often alone—Lincoln watched as the war transformed the nation’s capital. Military camps, government offices, hospitals, contraband camps where escaped slaves sought refuge and a ring of defensive forts supported the burgeoning wartime activity. Today, the cottage where Lincoln spent one quarter of his presidency remains intact on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) in northwest DC. In July 2000, Lincoln’s cottage was designated the President Lincoln and Soldiers’ Home National Monument. The National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Armed Forces Retirement Home have a cooperative agreement, whereby the National Trust stewards the preservation and maintenance of President Lincoln’s Cottage as the premier

The Octagon House/Museum – Private Tour

Private Tour of the United States Capitol and Visitor Center

Monday, May 13, depart JCCNV 10:15am; return 1:15pm The Octagon House was designed by Dr. William Thornton, the architect of the U.S. Capitol. Colonel John Tayloe, reputed to be the richest Virginian plantation owner of his time, built the house in Washington at the suggestion of George Washington. In 1814, Colonel Tayloe offered the use of his home to President and Mrs. Madison for a temporary “Executive Mansion” after the burning of the White House by the British. Madison, who used the circular room above the entrance as a study, signed the Treaty of Ghent there, which ended the War of 1812. This three-story brick house displays a dramatic break with the traditional, late Georgian and early Federal house planning that preceded it. Today, the American Architectural Foundation owns the Octagon House. The American Institute of Architecture’s (AIA) headquarters are in a larger building located directly behind it. The house has undergone extensive renovation since 1996, culminating in efforts to restore it to its original period appearance. Fee: $12/ $8 JCCNV member for bus transportation Note: Additional $8 fee for tour/admission—give to leader EXACT cash only on the AM of the trip. Do not include this with bus transportation. No café, you may bring food for return bus trip.

Tuesday, June 18, depart JCCNV 10am; return 3:15pm The United States Capitol, a symbol of the American people and their government and the meeting place of the nation’s legislature, houses an important collection of American art and is an architectural achievement in its own right. The U.S. Capitol Visitor Center is the largest project in the Capitol’s more than two-century history and is approximately three quarters the size of the Capitol itself. The entire facility is located underground on the east side of the Capitol so as not to detract from the appearance of the Capitol and the grounds designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1874. We will have time in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center to explore the various exhibits about the unique characteristics of the House and the Senate, the legislative process, the history and development of the architecture and the art of the U.S. Capitol. There will be time to have lunch (separate charge, optional) at the center’s eatery prior to our tour. Our tour was arranged by the office of Congressman Connelly. Fee: $12/ $8 JCCNV member (includes bus transportation and tour). Lunch is separate charge, optional at Visitor Center eateries. Note: Due to the U.S. Capitol police perimeter, there will be a few blocks of walking from where the bus drops us off. Please take this into account when considering this trip.

Monday, June 10, depart JCCNV 10:15am; return 1:45pm Enjoy a specially arranged private tour where we will learn about the features which make a building “green.” In keeping with its environmental mission, Nature House is a model of environmentally friendly, sustainable design. Friday, May 5 The book to be discussed is Not Without My Daughter by Betty Mahmoody. (Continued...)

The Voice • www.jccnv.org • (703) 323-0880 • Page 13

Synopsis: “Betty Lover met the perfect ‘dark stranger’ in a Michigan hospital. Her Iranian therapist, Dr. Sayyed Bozorg Mahmoody, became her husband and the father of their daughter, Mahtob. Despite the vicissitudes of the Iran-U.S. hostage crisis, Betty and he flourished until their summer ‘vacation’ in Iran in 1984. The next year and a half were a nightmare. Betty and Mahtob, held hostage by Mahmoody and his family, were subjected to Islamic fundamentalism, Persian nationalistic fanaticism, and a life of squalor. This compelling tale of their terror and escape from Iran was made into a movie starring Sally Field in 1991.

Friday, June 7 Join us for a discussion about Invisible Wall: A Love Story that Broke Barriers by Harry Bernstein. Synopsis: “The narrow street where Harry Bernstein grew up, in a small English mill town, was seemingly unremarkable. It was identical to countless other streets in countless other working-class neighborhoods of the early 1900s, except for the ‘invisible wall’ that ran down its center, dividing Jewish families on one side from Christian families on the other. Only a few feet of cobblestones separated Jews from Gentiles, but socially, they were miles apart.” – Amazon.com A wonderfully charming memoir written when the author was ninety-three, The Invisible Wall vibrantly brings to life an all-but-forgotten time and place. It is a moving tale of working-class life, and of the boundaries that can be overcome by love.” – Amazon.com

The Philadelphia Story (1940) Friday, June 28, 10am, JCCNV The Philadelphia Story remains one of the most hilarious and captivating romantic comedies ever to hit the screen. “A comedy with a conscience, it is a delightful look at the trials and tribulations of the privileged class.” Synopsis: Based on the Broadway play of the same name by Philip Barry, the film is about a socialite (Hepburn) whose wedding plans are complicated by the simultaneous arrival of her ex-husband (Grant) and a tabloid magazine journalist (Stewart). James Stewart won an Academy Award® for his offbeat and wildly comedic interpretation of the man who helps bring Tracy to her senses just in the nick of time. A fun, classic movie! JCCNV Outreach Programs “Chailights” On January 9, art lovers from multiple corners of the JCCNV’s Adult Department’s “world” – Reston, Fairfax and Fredericksburg – traveled together to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond to see “Chihuly,” an exhibition of the work of internationally renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. This was the largest exhibition of Chihuly’s work on the East Coast, representing the full range of the innovative contemporary artist’s forty-year career. The exhibit was amazing! We were awestruck by the dazzlingly original, vibrantly colorful, blown-glass sculptures. They were whimsical, larger-than-life, and unlike anything we had ever seen before. We enjoyed lunch at the museum’s cafeteria-style Best Café, and a small group went to Amuse, the museum’s fine dining restaurant. There also was plenty of free time to explore other fabulous museum exhibits and the gift shop before heading home. It was a lovely day, and we all agreed that we had experienced something truly extraordinary and spectacular.

Frank Lloyd Wright – Up Close and Personal Wednesday, May 1, 10:30am–12:30pm Presented by Peter Christensen, Chairman of the Advisory Council to the National Trust for Historic Preservation for Woodlawn Plantation and Pope-Leighey House. Recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as “the greatest American architect of all time,” Frank Lloyd Wright was also an interior designer and educator who believed in designing structures that were

in harmony with humanity and its environment. He called his architecture “organic” and described it as that “great living creative spirit which from generation to generation, from age to age, proceeds, persists, creates, according to the nature of man and his circumstances as they both change.” Wright’s amazing Fallingwater, a home built in Pennsylvania over a waterfall, was listed among Smithsonian’s Life List of 28 places “to visit before you die” and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Mr. Christensen, a docent at the Pope-Leighey House for over 10 years, will join us to talk about the original and innovative buildings Wright designed, and also about the fascinating life of Frank Lloyd Wright. Don’t miss out on this in-depth look at an American icon. Relax and enjoy bagels and cream cheese after the program.

Wednesday, May 15 – No program / Shavout The Night of Terror – The Turning Point in the Suffragist Movement Wednesday, May 22, 10:30am–noon Presented by Kathleen Pablo, Board of Directors, Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Committee. In 1917, more than 70 women were imprisoned in the Occoquan Workhouse, then part of the Lorton Prison complex. Their crime was silently picketing in front of the White House in support of women’s right to vote. The conditions these women endured in the prison were horrible. They were stripped, beaten, shackled to the cell bars and denied contact with each other and the outside world. Reports about these women became a major “turning point” in the struggle for ratification of the 19th amendment to the Constitution, recognizing a woman’s right to vote.

In the Sands of Sinai: A Physician’s Account of the Yom Kippur War Monday, May 20, 10:30am–noon Presented by author, Itzhak Brook, M.D. Dr. Itzhak Brook will discuss his book, In the Sands of Sinai: A Physician’s Account of the Yom Kippur War,

about his experiences serving as a young medical doctor in the Sinai with the Israeli Defense Forces during the Yom Kippur War in October 1973. These experiences changed Dr. Brook’s life forever. Although he had served in the U.S. Navy as well as the Israeli army, this was his first experience in war. He was instantly transformed from being a civilian doctor, preparing to celebrate the High Holy Days with his wife and children, to a wartime physician in the Sinai. He expected to care for his soldiers’ physical combat wounds, but had not anticipated that he also would have to help them deal with their psychological battlefield trauma, along with his own emotions. This is a highly personal, thought-provoking, and unique perspective on the Yom Kippur War. Books will be available for sale and signing after the program. RSVP: Sheila Budoff, SheilaB.jccnvactiveadults@gmail.com, (703) 537-3068
