In an effort to resolve the steep slope and nexus of downtown districts, Angel’s Knoll becomes the ‘soul’ of Los Angeles in this reinvented walkable park and center for Architecture and Design. This built landscape forms the home to the AIA|LA, the A+D Museum, and all who are drawn in and through the project from the sidewalk. With access, circulation, and program that stays true to form and material, the public spaces operate as a pedestrian roundabout and node in the city - centralizing the soul of downtown Los Angeles to reconcile the city context and downtown’s need for accessible green space.

The walkable green roof, meditative central courtyard, and third floor patios combine for 17,000SF of additional exterior public space. The form provides 35’ wide interiors that allow for flexibility in programming while the private spaces of the library, classrooms, and offices are all interconnected to control access.

The structure utilizes thin post-tensioned concrete slabs to transfer loads. Radially cut white marble floors and hung oak ceiling panels reflect sunlight and reinforce the centralizing phenomenology.

Plaster walls terminate before the punch windows and doors to slightly reveal the concrete structure when inside the project.

UNDER MY LAMELLA

This design-build semester taught me that the collaborative decision-making process is much more informed and fruitful when grounded in the realities of site, schedules, budgets, and technical demands of construction. Our goal was to define a series of tactics for fabricating a demountable roof structure. We explored a range of scales, profiles, geometries, and orientations for the lamella structure and struggled day and night to build the final version. We successfully achieved our goal of providing shelter for the USC community while fostering an understanding in structures, materials/methods, and construction as a synthesized process of design.

WILSHERE HOUSING

This project began with different massing studies of courtyard and mat housing typologies and used the converging city grids and identities at Wilshere Blvd and Hoover St to inform the design.

The concept follows a linear organized figure ground using different unit sizes, courtyards, and circulation to break up a strong north/south grain. Street level access points invite pedestrians to the large open spaces and courtyards with the allure of curves, greenery, trees, and ample light. As you move up the project you get various framed views of the DTLA skyline and park activities as well as shared roof terraces and private balconies for all of the units. The N/S axis thick Trombe walls are strategically punctured and read as a contrast to the axis with floor to ceiling glass and unit entrances.

Working within new code constraints for heavy timber, I attempted to optimize the structural bays for a rentable office mid-rise and utilize a backloaded core as a response to the infill context, an open office program, and the performative needs of the building.

The massing carve responds to the sun path at key work hours during winter and summer while simultaneously connecting the Avery street walking alley with the more commercial 3rd street.

The distorted hexagon shape of the two facades echoes the geometric massing of the mid rise and these elevations play with a scripted response to heat gain, program, views, and circulation.

South

With elevator cores, stair cores, bathrooms, and storage pushed to the back of the site, shade and access for the offices became key formal drivers while thick CLT walls needed for fireproofing double as thermal mass walls using LA’s large diurnal swings to reduce HVAC loads.

CAN YOU SPHEAR ME NOW?

This project was a playful solution to a design prompt for a contemporary mobile phone booth in the urban setting - being that public phone booths in U.S. cities are mostly obsolete.

Giving great importance to human proportions and the golden ration, the underlying idea of playfulness followed the child’s idea of a house and recognizable platonic shapes. The gabled ‘roof’, the void space below the inner frame, and even the stirrup placement all adhere to the ‘golden rectangle’ of the outer frame. Most importantly, the phone booth gives you a place for corporeal and acoustic privacy within the busy city - a kind of semi private place within the public that is still connected visually to enjoy passerbys and nature. In the future, one could imagine this project creating a more surreal experience with technological additions such as LED lighting and augmented reality.

BENT WIREFRAME HOUSE Project 1 - Analysis

In Venturi-ing out to examine Los Angeles, Project One invited us to scrutinize overlooked forms as part of a larger urban fabric. Following my analysis of the neo-classical entablature at Versace on Rodeo Drive - with its varying cornices, pediments, architraves, and column capitals - my transformation utilizes the details of its two dimensional profile to create space in the XYZ. Project 2 - Transformation

The original concept of a bendable wire informed the design of a single-family house that sits on a Los Angeles traffic circle. Split level floors in the system allowed for unique spaces and processional movement from a completely open ground floor to private rooms in higher levels. The multi-directional nature of the wire responds well to the omni-sided circle site, granting occupants diverse views of its context.

Site: Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong Description: My interest in Mirador Mansion stemmed from the diverse (and infamous) life that has infiltrated through and up the project over its history. The internal courtyard, small void spaces, and past user interventions presented opportunities for study. Floors intended for domestic use are now workplaces, offices, restaurants, and hostels. The way that the private/public relationships evolved along the circulation system of this building embodies the distinct three-dimensional urbanism of Hong Kong. In this project I connected the courtyard to the lower levels for safety through transparency.
