“CIMS is a Carleton University Research Centre (CURC) affiliated with the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism. Our work addresses the development of hybrid workflows that can bring forth the invisible measures of architecture and animate the visible world of construction.

We are advocates for the thoughtful and critical integration of computing and information technologies within existing cultural and disciplinary contexts — eschewing the evangelical rhetoric that often surrounds the digital 8

The work involves demonstrating digital methods of documentation utilized in its historical recording. Making use of various programs and technologies, such as Point Cloud and Photogrammetry, the animations highlight the technologies as a whole, their possible contribution to fabrication and their part in future Building Information Model (BIM)”.

A HOUSING PROPOSAL MIXED-USED LEBRETON FLATS DEVELOPMENT Year Location

Fall 2017, fourth year undergraduate Lebreton Flats, Ottawa

Following the larger theme of Urbanity, Community and Dwelling, this studio explores the developement of a multi-unit residential complex on an urban infill site in Ottawa, The Lebreton Flat. The master plan proposal derives from the IllumiNATION Lebreton Flat proposed by Hobin Architecture, in Ottawa.

The new masterplan proposal is about the repetition and transformation of elements organized around a pedestrian commercial street. The challenge was not only to design humane and flexible living spaces for a community, but to augment the quality of character of the urban environment in the process.

The first block, on the South-West part of the site, was developped to the building scale. It consistes of a set of townhouses and semi-detached houses above a commercial plinth, with a 23 storey residential tower to it’s corner .

A N I N S TA L L AT I O N SNAKE MORPHOLOGY MECANISM Year Location

Winter 2018 Innovation Promenade, Lebreton flats, Ottawa

The intentions for Innovation Promenade as envisioned by the IllumiNATION Lebreton plan by Hobin architecture, Ottawa, was to create an experiential digital pathway and public realm leading visitors on a path of discovery to Lebreton Square. In partnership with the Science Museum, the intention for this installation is for it to embody metamorphosis, create a vessel that alters, adapts and moves. This project started with the research of the snake’s anatomy, its muscle arrangement, its skin molting capabilities. Its extremely complex musculo-squeletic system allows it to be a very adaptable and transformable reptile. Shreading skin, regenerating teeth, constricting to kill its prey and dislocating its jaw to eat are a few specific capabilities to the snake. The installation is a mechanism made of two main rails onto which are secured a set of steel “ribs” covered with white aluminum panels, connected with ball bearings to allow rotational movement. A second set of rails dictate the height pattern of those ribs, which opens up considerably, at entrances for example. The mechanism is powered by a set of three crank system resembling those of a rollercoaster. A rainproof and very flexible skin of pavlor fabric is attached over the ribs onto which are then secured polycarbonate panels to mimic the scales of a snake, and pivot to adapt to the steep curvature of the path. During the day, the sun rays shine through the panels and skin creating a beautiful light effect within the installation. At night, LED lights installed inside the installation create light effects that radiate through the panels, to the outside.

Preliminary in depth research included the fabrication of a section of a snake shapes model, replicating the functioning of its anatomy. The first image at the top left of this page shows a set of ten 3D printed vertebraes onto which are attached ten sets of painted wood, laser cut. These are secured with vertical muscle represented by transparent elastic threads mimicking the location and movement of the back muscles. Snake vertebrae are connected by a strong ball-and-socket joint between each one, with 2 pairs of additional contact points that limit twisting the extent to which they are pulled away from the skeleton during flexing of the body.

The second image in the middle at the top shows the arrangement of the lateral and vertical muscles around the ribs. On the model, these are illustrated by transparent elastics once again threaded across each side so as to mimic the interlacing of muscles in web-like fashion. Those muscles span very long series of vertebrates at a time.

In the third image at the top right, a skin-colored nylon stocking is inserted over the imitation of the musculoskeletal system to mimic the skin of the snake. Finally, nearly 300 snake scales, here represented by thin sheets of laser- cut Mylar paper, are sewn one by one onto the nylon, strategically placed above each diamond shapes created by the muscle arrangement underneath. It is biologically known that the rounded diamond shape of snake scales is directly given by the way muscles intersect in layers of subcutaneous tissue, following the movement of the snake when in action. Muscles contraction on opposite side of the body propagate wave in the trunk which allows for support, propulsion and steering all at once.

This project was entirely modelled with Autodesk Revit 2017, with multiple customised families, counting over thirty parameters to control the rotatory angle of the ribs, the alignment of the scales, the visibility of certain components in the powering mechanism and the materiality of multiple elements. This project was not only part of the fourth year Architectural studio curriculum at Carleton University, but also a statement to prove to myself, my colleges and professors that Autodesk Revit Building Information Model software does not limit the Architect’s innovative design abilities.

A C R E AT I V E , C U LT U R A L , & I N N O VAT I O N C E N T E R ADAPTABLE AND TRANSFORMABLE BUILDING Year Location

Winter 2018, fourth year undergraduate Innovation Promenade Lebreton Flats, Ottawa

The intentions for Innovation Promenade as imagined by the IllumiNATION Lebreton proposal was to create an experiential digital pathway and public realm leading visitors on a path of discovery to Lebreton Square. In Partnership with the Canada Science and Technology Museum, Innovation Promenade is meant to tell the story of Lebreton Flats, the Ottawa River, the lumber industry and the landscape of the War Museum.

Placed at the heart of this innovative public realm is the Creative Cultural and Innovation Centre, which is a transformable and adaptable building that accomodates a diversity of visual art performances, such as music concerts, movie theatres, conferences and more. The old Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) West roundhouse on the Western edge of Lebreton Flats, inspired the three-quarter arena form of the building, with the main performance space at its center. The roundhouse used to be part of a major trading route and a hub of industrial activities serving the lumber mills to the Nearby Chaudiere falls and Victoria Island.

Throughout its history, this area was a cultural and social meeting place; a place to gather, connect and exchange. This new Cultural Center is meant to follow this idea and to not only shape the future of Lebreton Flats, but to embrace its past by remembering and drawing inspiration from this culturally important history.

The building has a central and circular multipurpose performance space that opens up to the park and the Innovation Promenade in the summer. Given the prime views of the site, the upper roof areas are terraced, offering direct views on to the Ottawa River, the Innovation promenade and surroundings. The circulation ring on the 3rd level frames the amphitheater while also offering panoramic views on to the overall City.

Regarding its transformation, the amphitheater seating areas creates, typically small scale theatre space. These seats can be removed, stored underneath the performance stage and folded along the perimeter to create a more open room for different types of events. Sliding wooden panels on either side of the stage area open-up onto an outdoor flexible seating area that blends into the park, and future installation and exhibitions. The roof terraces also provide performance space as well as outdoor workshops and maker spaces.

The creative atmosphere is complemented with the warmth and elegance of a Corten-steel façade. In the summer, a second layer of wood placed behind the perforated corten-steel panel on the upper section of the circular central volume, slides down and a set of spotlights located in the fly tower create a glittering and reflective light display at night.

A KINDERGARTEN DESIGN FOR THE SMALLER ONES Year Location

Fall 2016, third year undergraduate Kanata, Ottawa

The building consists of 2 main wings connected by the main entrance and lobby. At the ground floor, in both wings, are located the communal spaces, very open and large, where kids can run around and gather for public activities. The second floor which opens up to the ground floor in the North West wing is much smaller in scale and more private.

It is dedicated to all learning and teaching experiences. On the site, the building is oriented in a way that favors a maximum view opening to the forest and a smooth transition from the contained, and easily supervised courtyard to the openness of the landscape.

The kindergarten site is adjacent to the Carp River and within walking distance to the downtown Kanata pedestrian area. Crucially, this location is downstream of the South March Highlands wetlands area, which is also home to endangered diamond terrapin turtles. The municipality has enacted five-to ten-meters buffer zones along the Carp River in order to aid the protection of the turtles. Despite these provisions, urban development as well as street and wastewater runoff continues to threaten local flora and fauna. Therefore, a big portion of the buildable site has been given back to the landscape with a carefully built pedestrian path leading the kids from the school to the river. This generates a larger natural habitat for local species, and it sensibilizes the children to the importance of protecting their environment.

Moreover, with its modest scale, the whole kindergarten acts as a protective shield for the wetlands and turtle habitat against commercial development brought by the construction of a LRT station directly south of the site, behind the Brickyard and Lazy-Boy shopping plaza that is currently under construction.

A STREET REDEVELOPMENT YORK WATER COURTYARD Year Location Collab.

Winter 2017, third year undergraduate York Street, Byward Market, Ottawa Darwin Paiva

The York Water Courtyard reimagines the York Street parking lot into an urban linear park. The proposal embraces the site’s rich past, evolving present and inspiring future by speaking to the areas of architectural and cultural history.

The design commemorates water and courtyards, two distinctive elements that have shaped the community and urban fabric of York Street. The existing water fountain found on the public plaza facing Sussex Drive provided much needed water to the community during the 1800’s. The new design incorporates a series of water beds that act as a symbolic gesture in honour of York Street’s past. The park’s layout is inspired by the intimate spaces seen in adjacent courtyards like The Tin Court and the surrounding buildings.

Natural elements such as stone, lumber and water are used to provide visitors with local materials unique to the site. The courtyard concept is emphasized by framing the park’s perimeter with two rows of trees that rise from the water beds. The reflection produced by the water mirrors along with the tree-lines sidewalks create a dialog between the urban and the natural. By day, the water beds reflect the trees, sky and neighboring buildings providing a relaxing environment for its visitors.

By night, they transform into glowing LED boxes that enhance the festive night life atmosphere of the Byward Market.

This project was exhibited at Inspiration Village throughout the summer of 2017, as part of the Canada 150 Celebrations. Inspiration Village was located in Ottawa’s historic ByWard Market. It was an ephemeral hub for special exhibits and performances to highlight the regions of Canada.

A P U P P E T T H E AT R E & COMMUNITY CENTER AAKAR, A COMMUNITY OF MAGICIANS & PUPPETERS Year Location Collab.

Winter 2017, third year undergraduate Kathputli Colony, New Delhi informal settlement, India Barbara van Waarden

The main project for this studio was the design of a theatre/community/ cultural center for Delhi’s Kathputli Colony - a programmatically complex building on a complicated site. The area, once on the far Western periphery of Delhi, is now relatively central to the city. Having established itself as a quarter settlement on the lands of a bus depot some 40 years ago, the Kathputli colony has grown in size and prominence, both in Delhi and internationally. Under the threat of redevelopement, the community is now under pressure to transform.

This project embodies and augments the cultural and physical heritage of the colony. In so doing, both figure and fabric are explored. Given the imminent destruction and redevelopment of the current settlement - which itself has transormed over time - the neighborhood is poised to transform and, from both an urban and social perspective, the community center and puppet theatre help the community to navigate and survive this inevitable transformation.

Having had the chance to visit the site in February 2017. We discussed as a group directly with Mr. Puran, the spokesperson for the Kathputli colony who revealed eagerly the colony’s well thought out ideas for this theatre. They envision for the public to have a strong awareness of the process behind their art. As the guest walk down the theatre to find their seats, they can access an art gallery and a workshop on either side located underground at mid-level. The relationship between the different programs of the building are organized as such to be functional as a whole and not segregated, just like the life is in the slum. The colony eats, sleeps, work and feast together, in the same spaces. The community Center and Puppet theatre is intended to be their own village within the big city that is New Delhi.

During this studio, we visited the North-East part of India, during which we had the chance to meet Mister Puran, the spokesperson of the Kathputli Conoly. While having tea of the roof of his house in the slum of Delhi, we talked about the Colony’s history and their vision for this theatre/cultural center.

ÂŤThe swift transition from a nomadic to a sedentary lifestyle has left its mark, in Nunavik. Inuit today inhabit architecture conceived by an alien culture and designed for an exotic climate. They depend on traditional activities, but their settlements and housing give little support to their lifestyle. Most Inuit, although they live in permanent homes in towns, still hunt and fish across the territory as an integral part of everyday life.

In Nunavik, 78% of Inuit hunt, 88% fish, 86% harvest wild plants, and 49% trap.1 As a consequence, residents own and need cars, skidoos, boats, ATVs (all-terrain vehicles), trucks, doghouses, sleds (qammutiqs), building supplies, and hunting equipment. Current community plans, based on American suburban models, do not correspond with these needs. In particular, they do not match Inuit practices that adjust to the changing seasons.

As the American culture influenced the land in Nunavik, the arrangement of villages became disengaged from the lifestyle of the Inuit communities. Nomadism is a way of life Inuit identified with by constantly moving accross their territory to scavange for their basic needs. In contrast, American culture promotes sedentism leading society to a world of consumerism.

To connect the Inuit back to their semi-nomadic lifestyle, protable shelters have been designed with the notion of temporary stay. The shape is inspired by the igloo, a symbol of protection. The use of strictly recycled materials and the ease to construct are key ideas of these sliding homes making it as accessible as possible to the Inuit communities.

The shelters can be maneuvered to provide protection against the elements. Any number of them can be aligned by the hinged roof system creating a semi-enclosed space that increases in size as more shelters join. This bond encourages Inuits to have a temporary community on their hunting grounds, while travelling and reviving their old nomadic way of life.

A M AT E R I A L E X P L O R AT I O N PARAFIN WAX Year

Winter 2016, First year undergraduate

«Building 22 is an annual student-initiated publication showcasing work coming out of the school of architecture at Carleton University.»

This vessel is the result obtained from the exploration of paraffin wax based on my interpretation of the themes and concepts of several artworks by the great British sculptor of the 20th century, Henry Moore.

In my introspection of his famous sculpture, The Reclining Figure, produced in 1951, I observed that Moore was assiduously leaning toward the concepts of negative and positive space, vitality, organic composition and solids and voids. The project idea was to reveal a consistency, a logical sequence from the themes and concepts revealed in the artist’s skills through the properties of the material.

Paraffin wax is a versatile material that, manipulated correctly can develop structure integrity. The goal of the experience was to produce a three-dimentional shape, by grasping the material in a way that it best reveals and absorbs lights, gravity and time in space. The box is an instrument that houses light and captures a moment in time.
