AMANDA THE COLLECTION FALL 2017

People with Down syndrome have both physical and cognitive characteristics, quite particular, which implies in most cases, the clothing they use on a daily basis is not adequate. These physical characteristics correspond to different body proportions (smaller size, greater weight, shorter extremities or with certain distortions and deformities, among others), and a deficiency of cognitive development that can sometimes be related to certain reduced motor skills, which, does not allow them to handle certain elements that are found in clothing. Despite these limitations, people with Down syndrome have a happy, social, and extroverted personality. Not all individuals who have this condition have similar personalities, however, in many cases, they share common physical features. MATERIALS FABRICS Gabardine Waterproof Nylon Knit fabric

with Down Syndrome regarding the lack of suitable clothing. People with Down syndrome present both physical and cognitive limitations, which, prevents the proper management of clothing. Among these physical conditions heads, hands and arms of smaller size (on average and compared to people For this reason, it is necessary on many occasions to help people with this condition. Considering this, one must be aware of the designer’s role in the question of their ability and provide options that improve the quality of life. In light of the lacking in design that meets the needs of this target, 8 prototypes of clothing adapted to young people with Down Syndrome were developed.

Project description The thesis project seeks to reduce the problems that people with Down syndrome have with respect to their clothing because their cognitive, psychomotor and physiognomic condition generates certain inconveniences in their daily lives. A collection of casual clothing adapted to their needs was made, for which they are based on criteria of functionality, ergonomics, design; and, above all, the profile of the subject evaluated in the study. The project is focused on people in the city of Cuenca aged between 19 to 29 years.

The texture was made by tying marbles on to the fabric using elastic rubber bands, Then, the fabric would be heated at a low temperature for aproximately 30 minutes. Once the fabric is taken out of the pot, it would be washed with cold water and left to be dried overnight. Once one takes out the marbles, the texture would be created. These kind of textures result best on waterproof fabric.

TEXTURES

The textures that were created with wave tucks used complemeting or contrast colors. First the textures were created using a print fabric and a solid colored fabric, but after deliberation, it would be decided that the print fabrics were too overwhelming, so instead of using the print fabrics the solid colors were used instead. In the black and green wave tucks, while the print fabric was not used, its original solid color was used in the final prototype.

Tecnology The thread was woven into a mesh that is used for carpet making. In total, 3 types of blue, green, and multicolored wool yarns were used. This was then placed as a strip on the sleeves and in a triangular shape on the chest on both sides of the jacket. In addition to this, mouse tail cords were sewn and these can be stretched. In addition to being a visual and tactile element, the person the person will be able to stretch the cords and practice their motor skills.
