Dear Tuesday Clubbers, Pop Pickers, Narcos and Wolves!

Welcome to issue 49 of the Perfect Pop Co’s In the Club Magazine - Our Summer Issue 2023. Here you will find out all the latest PPCO info in particular from Narcotic hearts and Andreas & The Wolf our two most active bands on the label at the moment, with new recordings underway and new singles in the pipeline for both bands.

June 1st saw Narcotic Hearts play their Horn debut, supporting The Woodentops in a twice postponed gig. It was a rip roaring set of the bands new material and went down a storm! Big thanks as ever to all our attendees!

The Narcs are also deep in the process of recording a new single with Gary Hawkins - St Albans drumming and punk and Indie producing legend! which we are very excited about. It’s not due for release until next spring, but the PPCO are VERY confident of it being the hit of next Summer, so keep ‘um peeeled folks!

As we look towards August Bank Holiday. After some sterling work from Big M and James the Landlord of the Mad Squirrel Tap in St Albans, Perfect Pop Co are proud to announce our own mini fest. ‘Indie-Pendents Day’ which will feature both Andreas and the Wolf and Narcotic Hearts plus support spots from local heroes Maida Vales and Tom Eagles and superstar Rock God Will Crewdson Aka Scant Regard. This on Saturday August 26 from 5pm and is FREE entry. But that’s not all!

On Sunday 27th Both Pop CO bands are playing The Hertford House Hotel in Hertford at the Unofficial, Absolutely Not Magical Mystery tour, courtesy (or not) of the fab Kev Saunders ex-head honcho of magical mystery tour, which sadly ended last year due to health and safety concerns raised by Hertford Council, which is a real shame. HOWEVER as you will read later in the mag, Kev appears to have circumnavigated these issues with the support of the local venues, pubs and hotels and thankfully luckily for us both A&W and Narcs will be playing at The Hertford House Hotel from 2pm. Check out his interview further on for more on this.

And last but not least, we’ve just announced one more gig to make it a hat-trick of PPCO Bank Holiday shows with Narcotic Hearts now playing The Lower Red Lion Beer Fest in St Albans on Monday 28th, with a 6pm slot!

Narcs are currently recording footage for the video dodging in and out of the crap weather!

On the Andreas and the Wolf front they’ve also been busy studio wise recording 6 new tracks towards the third album. Not to mention back to back summer fests in Wheathampstead and Hertford... more on those further in the mag. We’re also very excited to announce a new recruit to A&W with the signing of Andrew Trussler one half of Dark Lords of Electronica - Rogue Sector. Andrew has agreed to take

A tangle of wires in a studio can mean a lot of things... a mess, a pain in the arse, a problem! But on this occassion, it’s none of those... It’s the debris of a new recording session down Farm Factory way, with the FAB 4 and St Albans music legend, Gary ’Sticks’ Hawkins who we are very excited to announce has accepted our request to record the new Narcotic Hearts EP - ‘Summers Coming’ Which you can all expect to be racing up the charts by this time next year!

We are hoping to get Gary on the September editon of The Andreas & The Wolf radio show where we can fill you in more details on this, plus an exciting musical collab and all of the news on what Gary’s been up to including stories of Malcolm Maclaren and nearly moments on national TV!

BIG M’s MIGHTY PROBE

Anyone familiar with the nightlife in St. Albans, will be aware if you like bands churning out the same, uninspired dull cover versions, there is a very popular music scene in the City. However, if you like original music performed by independent, original bands where do you go? There are, by my reckoning only two venues now that promote original music. If you want to see something different you’ve really gotta go out of town. For example (Shout out here to Kev Saunders’ Kevolution in Hertford)

However, that was then and this is now! And the fight back for original bands playing in St. Albans starts here! (OK so it starts on August 26th)

The Perfect Pop Co-Op have teamed up with The Mad Squirrel Tap, a St.Albans pub who, on the August Bank Holiday weekend are putting on ‘Mad Fest’ - a weekend featuring good Beer, great Pizza and Music including on Saturday 26th ‘St Albans Indie-Pendents Day’ where five original bands and artists will be bringing you an eclectic mix of original styles and songs.

We at the Perfect Pop Co-Op were delighted when The Mad Squirrel Tap asked us to curate the Saturday of the festival and in preparation in for our huge team up, I chatted with James - the manager of the pub about the gig and his plans for live music at his establishment in the future.

BigM!: Hello James, pleasure to meet you, let’s kick off… tell me what you are trying to do here, you wanna put on live music?

James, Mad Squirrel Tap: Yeah, so we have live music already, every Friday from 8 ’till 10, but more local bands, local solos, duos who only really play covers. So we thought it would be sort of interesting to link up with yourselves and do something thats not really happening enough in St. Albans at the moment, and bring

something different, which obviously your concept of St. Albans ‘Indie-Pendents Day’ in music is a really, really good idea.

So, if we can do that over a Bank Holiday, and maybe start something that could be exciting moving forward… Yeah it should be good!

BigM!: Yeah, we’ve discussed before it’s very difficult for original bands to get gigs in St. Albans…

JMST: Massively…. Yeah…

BigM!: … so it’s really good you guys are gonna give original bands an opportunity to show what they can do and it sort of puts your pub on the map and hopefully, if it builds, it puts St. Albans back on the map, you know as a cultural centre you know?

JMST: Yeah, massively and obviously the live music scene has never really gone away, but it has kinda disappeared from certain areas. I mean it’s still massive in London, it’s still massive in Manchester, Leeds, all the bigger places, but it’s the local towns where it’s kinda died away from what it used to be, especially when I was younger, where every week you used to go out and see your Mate’s bands and stuff like that, where as now it’s just not as available as it used to be. So hopefully we work towards bringing a little bit of that back.

BigM!: What sort of stuff were you into? Or what are you into ? You like more Hardcore stuff?

JMST: So…. I kind of… erm …I went to University and studied Audio Recording Production and my mates have always been in various bands, various different genres…

BigM!: O.K…

JMST: …I’m one of those classic people who says ‘I’m into everything’, but I more into a little bit of everything, so I’ve listened to Hardcore Punk, I’ve listened to… I’m massively into Blues… Delta Blues…Old Skool Hip-Hop…

We thought it would be interesting to link up with yourselves and do something thats not really happening enough in St. Albans at the moment, and bring something different, which obviously your concept of St. Albans

BigM!: So, if I had to nail you down, and make you say what your favourite band or artist is, who would it be?

JMST: I’d have to say, just because of growing up with them, the band I listened to the most was The Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

BigM!: O.K.

JMST: But thats growing up… My Dad showing me them and going through everything like that.

BigM!: Yeah, I sometimes think your first band is a bit like your first Girlfriend…

JMST: Yes!

BigM!: … in the sense you never forget them…

JMST: Massively!

BigM!: I mean I used to LOVE, when I was growing up Queen. I don’t really like them now, what they stand for now, but I still look back very fondly on those… the first gig I ever went to was Queen at Knebworth…

JMST: Yeah yeah, it’s memories isn’t it?

BigM!: … which really stands out in the memory.

Big M!: So, I’m kinda optimistic person, I’m sure St. Albans ‘Indie-Pendents Day’ will go really, really well, so working on that basis, whats the future? Do you wanna get something regular going?

I think it’s about time we started to build a scene in St. Albans again.

JMST: Well, thats, yeah… thats… if anything is successful, we obviously need to do it again… ‘cos everyone wants… success from both our parts… so yeah, if we can make this the start of something, then great, yeah, perfect! Let’s move on! I’m all about having every kinda event we can possibly do here and I think this is a very good, really exciting that I hope really goes well and I’m very enthusiastic about.

BigM!: I think… our record label… our philosophy is just get up off of your arse and do it!

JMST: Yeah.

BigM!: You can sit around hoping for things to change, but really you have to make things happen yourself.

JMST: Of course.

BigM!: But in saying that, you can’t always do things on your own. It takes a coming togehter of like minded people to get something going, so I think it’s really cool, that you’re open minded… and you know, receptive to doing something different and hopefully we can move on and build from this.

JMST: Yeah… yeah I think thats a very fair comment and I think definitely it’s… I completely agree, you do have to go out and get things, you have to work hard and things are not just handed to you on a plate, and I’m sure this won’t get handed to us on a plate and we’ll have to work hard and promote hard and market it properly to make it a successful event as possible.

But, I’m sure together we can do that and yeahI’m REALLY looking forward to it!

BigM!: Brilliant! Thank you for your time James. See you August 26th!

TOM EAGLES

Singer songwriter Thomas Eagles former front man of the late 90’s indie band ‘The Brink’ Takes to the acoustic guitar to bring you original music from back then up to the modern day!.. and tomorrow! He’s the Daddy... or most likely to be on the Sauce?!

The Maida Vales musical roots lie in the infectiously catchy rhythms of the late Indie explosion as well as the traditional psych-pop sounds of the 1960’s. The bands powerful ‘larger than life’ stage presence has been compared to the exuberant energy of The Rolling Stones and more recent Libertines.

Thanks to an impromptu jam with Mystery Jets frontman Blaine Harrison, the band was introduced to Jets producer Matthew Twaites who went on to record and produce their debut EP including single ‘Sunday Morning’.

The success of the EP saw the band tour extensively across the UK and Europe playing all manner of festivals, clubs, pubs and living rooms cementing their place as a ‘must-see’ band on the UK circuit.

‘Everything In between’ swiftly followed in March 2020. The Maida Vales second EP produced by Pat Collier (Morcheeba, Primal Scream). The group looked forward to a long UK tour which came to an abrupt end with the introduction of the infamous lockdown of 2020. This did not deter the lads but instead fuelled the fire the band needed to put pen to paper and start writing new material.

The bands single ‘With You’ followed which turned their collective gaze towards a more predominant surf pop feel, exploring layered acoustic guitars, bigsby wobbles and spooky harmonies.

2022 started with a boom as The Maida Vales released their new song ‘Stereo’. The eerie ‘60’s influenced banger is fresh, original but also reminiscent of the darker tones of The Doors & The Kinks. Recorded in Bristol, at Idles & Florence & The Machines ‘Humm Studios’ over 2 days of blood sweat & tears, Stereo was born. To celebrate the release, ‘The Hawley Arms’ Camden played host to the groups sold out launch party paving the way to a string of UK club shows to promote the record.”

THE RAIN IN HARPO FELL MAINLY ALL BLOODY DAY!

LUKE FEST at The Elephant and Castle was a top experience for everyone, by everyone going the extra mile for a great cause.

A lot of hard work went into putting this day on not least from the guys who built the stage in a monsoon! Everyone was utterly determind that the usual British Summer wouldn’t bugger it up and it certainly didn’t!

It’s hoped that this will be the first of many such collabs with the PPCO and The 88. Big up to Nick Alsop and all of the 88; Matt Edmond, Martin Wakeling and Oliy Allsworth for inviting us along.

In the words of Nick Alsop who promoted the day...

A massive thank you for everyone who had a part in Saturdays inaugural Lukefest! The weather went against us but we made the most of the day and considering everything, we are absolutely delighted. We’re yet to have a proper debrief but we’re hopeful that we can bring Lukefest back again next year bigger, better and definitely dryer!!

Regarding the charity, donations and raffle. The ladies and gents at Farr Brew, the Elephant and Castle and other eta ligaments have continued to sell tickets and take donations through this week and will do so through the coming weekend.

Early next week we will draw the raffle and let the lucky winners know who the are and what they have won and also how much money we managed to raise for the Isabel Hospice.

On behalf of ourselves, the Harris family and all involved, thank you to everyone, we’ll stay in touch and see you all soon.

Not only was the feedback of the new style set excellent and the reception of the ‘space suit’ on it’s maiden voyage, Andreas & The Wolf are also very excited to let slip that we also recruited a new member at the show! Mr Andrew ‘Rogue Sector’ Trussler!, who has been a big friend of the band and the PPCO for ages and has appeared on the Andreas & The Wolf Radio show too, so we’re very excited to welcome him along for the ride!

Another great day was had in the PPCO’s adopted town of Hertford at the invitation of The Kevolution. A top line up of 6 eclectic original bands entertained the masses throughout a thankfully dry and actually rather sunny Saturday evening.

It was a great chance for Andreas & The Wolf to get rare back to back gigs under their space boots and utility belts as the new set takes shape nicely. Big thanks to everyone who came down and especially Anna for the pics!

On the 18th of May the fabulous Empire Records celebrated their 10th Birthday! An astounding achievement for this fab indepedent St Albans stalwart which has against the odds survived a pandemic, the tragic passing of visionary owner Derek and the cost of owning anything in St Albans!

HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY EMPIRE RECORDS!

When Derek opened Empire in 2013, I don’t think anyone could have predicted where we’d be ten years later. He poured his heart and soul (and a lot of his records!) into the shop and laid the foundations for what we were to grow into.

Derek got ill and sadly passed away in 2015, but Marina’s decision to take over Empire and Chaos City Comics meant we could keep his legacy alive, and we’ve been building on it ever since.

Since our opening, the returning popularity of music in a physical format has been phenomenal. It’s been an incredible journey and it’s not slowing down! We never would’ve believed we’d carry such a vast range of new and second-hand records, and we’re so happy to be able to serve the vinylloving community of St Albans and beyond, young and old!

The challenges and opportunities we’ve faced over the years have helped us to grow and stay a relevant part of St Albans’ high street. From DJing at local events to holding live in-store performances, from stalls at record fairs to increasing our online presence in order to survive the Coronavirus pandemic, we’re proud to be building on what Derek started a decade ago and are so grateful for each and every one of our customers for helping to keep the dream alive! We couldn’t have done it without you all. Thank you.

Who knows what the next ten years will bring, but we hope to keep serving, keep growing, and keep the music flowing!

Every time someone would walk into the home studio, they’d always say ‘it looks like a guitar shop in here,’ which got us thinking when it came to getting a bit of space back; why not open an actual shop? So here we are.

Of course, the first question that we needed to ask ourselves after we’d sold a whole bunch of things and made some space was ‘what do we stand for?’ It’s not about politics, it’s about music... and as people who have been in bands as long as we have, it’s easy to lose sight of the reason that you get involved in music in the first place. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still fun..! However, as you get older, your priorities change. You get stuck in your ways - the guitar you take to gigs is the one that you left in the case from last time; the amp

you use is probably the house amp (it’s not perfect but anything for an easy life..!)... in short, you become comfortable, less willing to try new stuff.. old, decrepit, lazy and..

Well, bollocks to that.

Why did you get into music? Fun. That’s why. Some people play golf (nothing wrong with that) but the way we get our kicks is pratting about on a stage somewhere and looking GREAT (or at least trying to, anyway!). So enter ELLEN’S GUITARS!

Ellen’s Guitars; our mantra is standing out from the crowd and making yourself noticed. Let’s face it; no-one cares if you’re strapping a guitar to your back that is worth £50 or £5k... No-one cares if your amp is £100 or £1000...as long as you look good and sound great, then it’s job done. That’s why we’re making band gear to get you noticed.

Excellent mods & upgrades

Currently, we’re working on a whole host of designs from some super designers and some excellent mods and upgrades, all of which will be up on our website and our listings page on Reverb.com shortly. Also, we aim to keep prices reasonable in these Cost Of Living Crisis times (let’s not let the world drag us down and stop us rocking, right?). Also, for daily nonsense and updates, why not follow us on Insta?

Finally, if you’ve read all of this and think ‘well, that sounds fine and dandy... but what I’d really like is a guitar that’s 100% mine,’... just let us know. We’re always happy to work on a bespoke commission! It’s fun right?!

Uber classy goth glam trio She Made Me Do It are back with a new single... have they ever been away I hear you ask? Thankfully NO, is our reply - Will Crewdson is officially in our book the only person we know who makes the PPCO look lazy!

We’re excited that his solo project Scant Regard will once more be sharing a stage with the PPCO in August at St Albans Mad Squirrel, but here he returns with Rachel Stamp partner Shaheena Dax (vocals, bass, keyboards) and fellow Adam Ant band member and bass player Joe Holweger on drums.

The band have a string of dates in the pipeline, but for our money their Spice of Life Show on 9 September is the one to see. (So see you there!)

The new single was produced and mixed by John Mitchell and was released on all digital platforms on June 30.

We first came across Kev as the promoter of The Hertford Marquee back in 2008 with The Scratch and were impressed then by the set up and general vibe of the place. Our next encounter was 2018 when Reverse Family AND The Tuesday Club played the brilliant Hertford Magical Musical Mystery Tour for the first time. This Year Kev has been kind enough to feature both Narcotic Hearts on his Thursday Night at The Hertford Club and Andreas & The Wolf only last month for the We Hart Hertford fest. Now he’s going even further by featuring both bands at THE

ABSOLUTELY NOT MUSIC MYSTERY TOUR 2023

Here The PPCO Picks Kev Saunders Brains on all things music...

PPCO: Hi Kev, thanks for sparing time in your busy schej to talk to us pre another exciting weekend of live music in Hertford! Let’s start at the top. What is the Kevolution?

KEV: It’s kinda tongue in cheek. But also not… I’d been resisting getting involved with The Hertford Club because it’s always been synonymous with the enemy for me: in the 80s a few of us used to plot its overthrow… going undercover in blazers and sensible shoes to subvert from within. When they persuaded me they’re no longer a Conservative Club, I agreed to put some music on there… Hence the Kevolution… And since we’ve had to abandon the Musical Mystery Tour and Hertford Music Festival is no more, I’ve re-branded the whole thing. Promotions… Events… PA hire… Remember Citizen Smith? The Kevolution is PA and Party Power to the People!

PPCO: How did the Musical Mystery Tour all begin and why did it stop? It was such a successful and vibrant event? When we first played it in 2017 with The Tuesday Club and Reverse Family, we couldn’t believe how busy, ecclectic but also how relaxed it was, there was no hint of trouble despite the whole of Hertford being out on the streets supporting it?

KEV: How did the Musical Mystery Tour begin? Well, as instigator of Hertford Marquee I was very visible and I think Hertford Music Festival in its original form thought I might be able to kick-start what was, I thought, a very staid and uninspiring (non) event. Faced with increasing insurance, risk assessment and other costs and very little sponsorship or council funding, they couldn’t afford venues like Hertford Castle grounds and the Castle Hall (now theatre). And the

MMT was my proposal. We’d give local artists an audience and a stage, take the event into the heart of the town, and facilitate a day of live music in as many places as would get on board… I know I’m being smug, but I am still proud of this. I had the contacts with loads of musicians, sound engineers, DJs and so on… The pubs, clubs, shops, library, and museum had the space, the licences, the capacity to serve food and drink and – crucially – their own public liability and employer’s liability insurance. I would bring the talent and the audience. The ‘Mystery’ bit was the map – directing you to places you wouldn’t usually got to and music you might not usually listen to.

I’m not a great salesman. Pubs hated the idea of live music –especially people playing their own stuff! Bloody weirdos! The first one in 2006 (or was it 2005?) comprised 3 venues. One of which was easily persuaded because I was in charge. Another was a few pallets stacked outside WH Smiths on a rainy May Bank Holiday. Nuala O’Halpin played. And she’s played every single one since. We only had one PA so I trundled and humped the thing around…

By 2011, I think I had about 15 venues. No way I could manage more on my own, even with help from a few mates… So one of those mates, Rob Guinn instigated a pub crawl/ recruitment drive. We were going to get every single pub and club in town on board. And we did. By 2014 we had 40 venues – all at once, from lunchtime to bedtime and all for free. Something like 300 performances from over 200 acts comprising more than 700 individual artists…

PPCO: So why did it stop?

They were saying it had got out of hand… OK we reckon over 20,000 were there last time… With not one single arrest. Compare that with a normal Friday night in Hertford… We weren’t ‘closed down’ – exactly. The SAG (Safety Advisory Group), comprising East Herts Council and the police gave us a list of things to do. Not compulsory – but they made it clear that if we didn’t comply, we’d be personally liable. At its height the MMT was still basically 5 or 6 people – all

volunteers – and we made the whole thing happen for less than £10K in sponsorship, venue contributions and Hertford Town Council’s annual community grant of £1200. Among the ‘suggestions’ were an evacuation plan for the entire town in case of terrorist attack, fencing off roads from pavements, traffic marshals and many other measures far beyond our reach. My ‘team’ – my friends – had to step down. Their homes and businesses were at risk. And so were mine.

So that was that.

And that thing about the vibe… I’m so glad you mentioned that. I think the reason that vibe was always almost palpable is that everyone, artists, venues, and audience alike, always knew that this was created by Hertford people for Hertford people – and kindred spirits like you lot! It’s about inspiration and attitude…

PPCO: You’ve been in lots of bands over the years, which was your favourite?

KEV: What was my favourite band (of the ones I’ve been in)?

That’s tricky. Helium Brothers because my first proper band… Takashi O’Hashi Project because I found myself in New York recording at The Power Station… Marden Hill because it’s cool as fuck… and Los Ladrones, my most recent, because we wrote the song for my funeral: I Wear Black.

PPCO: What Keeps you keepin’ on Kev?

KEV: What keeps me keepin’ on?

Bit of a Strummer thing. He used to say ‘Never give up’… And also, it becomes who you are…. It’s certainly not about money… It’s a groove you get into – and I’m happy as long as the groove doesn’t become a rut.

PPCO: How has gig promotion changed over the years?

KEV: How has it changed?

To be honest, I’m not really a promoter. The MMT was great because it was a collaborative thing. When I was running Hertford Marquee, there wasn’t any social media (well, MySpace) and in some ways that was nice. On a personal level, things have changed because I started doing this because no one allowed you to put original bands on anywhere – or any bands. Pubs associated music with trouble a couple of decades ago. Now, though, every bar has watered-down live music – always covers, always too quiet and usually early in the evening before the ‘real’ audience shows up for the DJs. Which is fine – but it makes it hard to get anyone but people like us (you know who you are!) to actually turn up for the real deal.

PPCO: What’s your ultimate main stage line up? Dead or Alive, 5 bands or artists?

KEV: Ultimate Main Stage Line-Up – dead or alive... hmmm 5? Only 5? Well…

Well there’s my ongoing Kevolution nights at The Hertford Club (first and third Thursdays usually) … And I’ve got ideas about shows at the White Hart and McMullen’s Brewery Yard next year. Acid Jazz records have just re-released Marden Hill’s seminal acid jazz/trip hop album Blown Away on vinyl (featuring yours truly) and in terms of recording/ performing… I’m working on a reinvention of my band Los Ladrones… Tentatively called KING ANGRY.

PPCO: How can you find out more about Absolutely Not the Musical Mystery Tour

KEV: Funny enough, this is nothing to do with me at all (officer). After the demise of the MMT a few publicans came to see me and I mentioned that idea. I was kidding. But anyway, although there is no MMT almost every venue in town is staging its own individual live music thing. Of course without me and my team there’ll be no Green Party litter-picking volunteers, no St John Ambulance paramedics, no extra security teams, and no overarching programme… Search Facebook for ABSOLUTELY NOT THE MUSICAL MYSTERY TOUR for the page with all the pubs’ line-ups. Hello everyone. Please join us in welcoming Vincent Mahon into the club. Vincent describes himself as hanging onto the microphone for dear life, a position he currently occupies with Seeds Of 77.

1. We’re sitting in the cyber pub doing this interview and it’s our round. What would you like to drink? Brendan Behan said, “I’m a drinker with a writing problem”, which is something I think we should all aspire to. Having said that, although I’m more than partial to going off the rails on occasion, I’m currently well and truly on the wagon and I like to take a break from the sauce every now and then. The wonderful thing about sobriety is that you’re never unintentionally rude. There’s none of that “I’m so sorry, I was drunk last night” nonsense. If I am rude to someone it’s because they’re behaving like a gaping sphincter of Biblical proportions and they thoroughly deserve it, not because I’ve had too much to drink. It’s very liberating.

Which is a somewhat long-winded way of saying “I’ll have a lime and soda, please.”

2. What was the last thing you heard or watched that was so good you had to tell someone about it?

“Succession” ticked all my telly boxes. I thought it was brilliant. And I’ve just finished “Painkiller”, a dramatisation of the events behind the OxyContin scandal. It’s pretty much the same story as the equally brilliant “Dopesick” but with a different slant. “Painkiller” is faster, angrier and more in your face. It manages to get a lot done in six episodes thanks to some

economic direction and sharp editing. The cast are uniformly excellent and what really strikes home is using the relatives of real OxyContin victims to introduce each episode. All in all, a very good bit of telly. And it was nice to see Matthew Broderick in something other than his usual “nice guy” stuff.

Also, “Love, Death and Robots” is absolutely brilliant.

Musically I’m always playing catchup and there’s so much great stuff out there it’s impossible to get to the end of it. I’ve only just been introduced to the world of Vic Chesnutt and he has me entranced. Wonderful, heartrending, viscerally beautiful music made by a rare talent with a troubled soul. I wish he was still around as I’d have loved to have seen him live. Poor sod. I hope he’s at peace, wherever he is.

You could write what I know about Jazz on the back of a postage stamp and still have room for your

name, address, phone number and a comprehensive shopping list. But “Ascenseur pour l’échafaud” (Lift to the Scaffold) by Miles Davis is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard. It’s a Jazz album for people who don’t like Jazz, and it’s the perfect accompaniment to a chilled and gentle Sunday morning. It’s the soundtrack to a film of the same name, and when you consider the entire album was improvised on the fly in the studio while they were watching said film, that’ll give you an idea of the musical chops on all involved. Incredible.

Of the current crop of bands on rotation chez Mahon, I’m very fond of Adwaith: a band of Welsh girls who sing in their native tongue and make make a jolly fine racket. I also love Protomartyr (Imagine The Fall if they came from Detroit). Dream Wife are great and I love their new album; High-Vis make a cracking racket, as do Snapped Ankles. The Lovely Eggs are superb and I’ve always got time for a bit of Beak. Pale Blue Eyes are well worth investigating, too. I’m off to the Krankenhaus festival for the August Bank Holiday and that’s always a great source for discovering new bands.

As for older stuff, well you can bury me with my copy of “Dusk” by The The. It’s a perfect album. And the Snivelling Shits are quite possibly the greatest thing to have happened ever, ever, ever, since the Dawn of Time.

3. What does Punk Rock mean to you?

I think of Punk Rock as a uniquely British mutant strain of Rock ’n’ Roll. You can argue the toss about who did what first until the cows come home, and the Americans had “Punk” nailed down for sure with the

MC5, the Stooges, the Velvets and any number of snotty garage bands erupting like acne all over the face of the U S of A. But Punk Rock was something else entirely, and I don’t think it could have been spawned anywhere other than Britain in the late 1970s.

4. Who was the first artist you paid to see? Blimey. I’m pretty sure it would have been Toyah at Harrow Technical College, sometime in 1980.

5. Who is the most influential person in your life? No one individual stands out. It’s more a collection of influences and ideas that have shaped me over time. In terms of trying to be a lyricist, it would be Tim (TV) Smith from the Adverts, especially “Crossing the Red Sea…”; Richard Strange from the Doctors of Madness; and Poly Styrene from X-Ray-Spex.

I’m no student of philosophy, but I’d say that Stoicism offers some practical guidance on how to get through life in one piece. And there are several writers whose works have left a lasting impression, such as George Orwell, James Baldwin, Joe Orton and Christopher Hitchens. I like cynics and sceptics. I also admire people who are brave enough to remain true to themselves regardless of what the outside world thinks. There’s a lovely quote from Quentin Crisp which sums it all up rather nicely, I think:

“In an expanding universe, time is on the side of the outcast. Those who once inhabited the suburbs of human contempt find that without changing their address they eventually live in the metropolis.”

I like that.

6. Which song do you wish you had written?

I don’t play an instrument so pretty much every great song I hear, I wish I’d written. I know I’m prone to hyperbole, but “All My Friends” by LCD Soundsystem is so very great. It starts with an almost Baba O’Riley riff, adds some lovely subtle New Order guitar, then goes on an epic journey through friendship, loss, growing up, relationships, responsibility and family. I honestly think this is one of the finest songs I’ve ever heard and it gets me every time.

7. What would you older self tell your 16 year old self? Don’t be afraid to try Don’t be afraid to fail Don’t be afraid to keep your dreams ‘Cause some things aren’t for sale Don’t be afraid to fall in love Don’t be afraid to hope And don’t give up when things go wrong ‘Cause somehow, you will cope.

Also, never prioritise anyone who only considers you to be an option.

8. Is the internet a help or hindrance to a) new acts. b) established acts?

The internet is a tool and like any tool, it can be used for good or bad. I dip my toe in and out of it and it’s almost impossible to do anything without involving social media these days. But I think it’s lost its way somehow and it doesn’t excite me anymore. I can’t help feeling some amazing possibilities have been squandered.

9. What four things would you put in a time capsule? A copy of “Hunky Dory”; a DVD of “Cabaret”; an illustrated copy of William Blake’s “Songs of Innocence and Experience” and a fine bottle of claret. Whoever finds that lot is in for a good time.

London, late 1975 just as it was all beginning to ferment. I was ten at the time, so far too young to appreciate what was coming. But I’d also loved to have seen Billie Holiday back in the 1930’s, and Ziggy’s farewell at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1973. And I’m keeping the Time Machine.

11. If you could be any character in a film, what film and who would it be?

I don’t know if I’d want to be him, but Kesyer Soze from “The Usual Suspects” was a fascinating character and the legend built up around him in the film ramped up the tension, putting him right out there in the villainy stakes. But I don’t think I’d make a very good criminal mastermind/evil genius type. It looks like a lot of hard work and “The Simpsons” is on in a minute.

12. You are now In The Club, but which club do you actually wish it was? I’m with Groucho Marx on the idea of clubs: I wouldn’t join one that would have me as a member.

13. Who’d be in your 4 piece fantasy band. Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals? (Although you don’t have to restrict it to a 4 piece, or those instruments)

I thought I had the ideal four-piece fantasy band once. Turned out it was precisely that.

14. What question haven’t we asked you that you wish we had?

Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near?I would’ve said “Arsenal!” :-)

In this issue of In the Club the intrepid ‘BIG M’ moves swops his interviewing hat for a roving reporter one as part of a new feature for in the club on Record Shops (particularly ones selling vinyl) around the country.

We hate the way the corporations have commodified and monitised music. Equally we have nothing but love and respect for the individuals out there who remain independent and have a passion for records and music.

Walk down any English high street and you’ll see the same coffee shops… the same mobile phone providers and the same Supermarkets (although we don’t have

a Scooby whats ‘super’ about them). Our towns and cities continue their descent into homogenised blandness. One thing that helps English towns remain a kernel of individuality is the independent record shop!

As you can imagine we LOVE these establishments: For example, St. Albans’ Empire Records have always been champions of The Perfect Pop Co-Op and great believers of what we are

trying to achieve.

Therefore, we have decided to compile a directory of Independent Record Shops we have visited and recommend to help you dear reader with your musical selections!

We have included as much detail as possible, but please contact the shops directly if you have any questions regarding opening hours, stock etc.

So, in no particular order (apart from the aforementioned Empire Records who will ALWAYS be our favourite) here is our directory.

This is not just a record shop. Think of it more as a musical hub, that caters for local musicians, music fans and last but not least, vinyl lovers.

Upstairs is a wonderful cafebar, but downstairs you will find the racks containing a selective choice of new and used vinyl.

So I was able to satisfy my vinyl urges and my caffeine dependency. A shop selling records whilst also providing great coffee, craft beer, wine and food??? Thats gotta be a Win-Win! Right?

The co-owner Rhydd, is a top bloke, with a great knowledge of the local scene, a good sense of humour and a wealth of musical history & knowledge. He also has a driving ambition to create a ‘scene’ in Eastbourne: The Vinyl Frontier have regular gigs and DJ nights featuring original artists and performers. In fact, Rhydd was just as vociferous as yours truly when it came to expressing dissatisfaction about endless, clone cover bands covering the same songs, night after night after night…

I found what I was looking for, The Pixies release for RSD 2023 fairly easily, I was then able to take me time and have a nose through the racks and as is sometimes my want I made an impulse purchase

of something that caught my eye; in this case the album by Wand. Incidentally it was one of my impulse purchases, 10 years ago which lead to my discovery of the Perfect Pop CoOp! (But thats a story for another time).

I was then very pleased to discover, The Vinyl Frontier doesn’t hide away the 7” singles under the racks or in a dusty corner at the back of the shop. A lot of shops seem to do this-it’s almost like the 7”single is an afterthought-which is kinda sacrilegious in my book! My pleasure increased, when after going through the singles I discovered ‘Another Nail In My Heart’ - Squeeze are one of my favourite bands and I’m always looking

to add to my collection of these South London legends. I was made up when I got home and gave it a spin, despite being 40 years old, it sounded and played great.

So my advice would be, if you are in East Sussex pop into The Vinyl Frontier, have a coffee, or something a little more stronger if thats your thing and check out and buy some great sounds.

Continuing my impromptu Summer tour of INDEPENDENT record shops on England’s South Coast, I came across Vinilo.

At fist glance, the inside reminded me of a certain fruity tech store. But don’t worry dear reader-the staff in Vinilo are very warm, friendly and not at all condescending.

They also do not have those shiny but dead eyes, which people who are part of cults often seen to have.

Anyway, I digress. This is a great shop, well laid out with the racks sorted in alphabetical/genre order. When I walked in Lizzo was blasting out of the shop hi-fi. Now, not being up to speed on modern culture and not being down with The Youth, I had to ask my Daughter who was accompanying that day, who Lizzo was. Having established that was I was listening to was Lizzo, I confirmed to my very patient daughter that I really liked Lizzo’s energy and we found the ‘Lizzo’ section in the racks. By this time Lizzo had

finished being energetic and Vinilo had started to spin something else. This is where the previously mentioned helpful staff came in to the story-My Daughter knew we had been listening to Lizzo, but did not know which album it was-obviously I didn’t have a Scooby.

After a bit of discussion my Daughter and the staff member established the album we had just heard was ‘Cuz I Love You’. Great! We’re getting somewhere!

Problem 1: ‘Cuz I Love You’ is the only Lizzo album NOT in the rack. Problem 2- Helpful Vinilo Staff Member No.1 thinks the only copy they have, is the one that has just been spun.

Then, Helpful Vinilo Staff Member No.2 pipes up and informs she “thinks there might be another copy in the back” and to give her “5 Mins”.

This is useful - I continue my browsing, and I find The Kinks and Sleaford Mods albums-in someways you could argue, that you couldn’t find two more diametrically opposed bands in terms of their style, output and delivery. But on the flip side, they are both

quintessentially English: bands that could only ever have come from this country. Whilst I was thinking this, and congratulating myself on my oh so profound and wise musical philosophies, Helpful Vinilo Staff Member No.2 came back with the last copy in the shop of ‘Cuz I Love You’. Job Done.

I also picked up a re-release of the De La Soul album. I used to LOVE Rap/HipHop before it all became about ‘Bitches’, ‘Ho’s’ and ‘Bling’. Public Enemy used to rock my little 17 year old World, but I also loved the more mellow, laid back and melodic grooves of De La Soul. I’m also a sucker for coloured vinyl and this 180G double album came in a wonderful Opaque Magenta.

Like a lot of INDEPENDENT record shops, Vinilo also sell their own merchandisewhich I could not resist. So if in the future, somebody comes up to me and asks “have you ever heard of an INDEPENDENT record shop in Southampton called Vinilo?” I can reply and say “Vinilo? Literally been there, done that, Got the T-Shirt!”

Footnote: Two doors down from Vinilo is Vinilo Vintage,

which contains all their pre loved vinyl. I only had time to briefly poke me head round the door, but a very good copy of John Lennon’s ‘Live In NYC’ was playing, which certainly piqued my interest.

Great to see The Priscillas back in action with a new single... (Having last seen them when they shared a stage with The Tuesday Club at the last Nambucca in 2022 at the Gene Loves Jezebel show). A single coincidentally named after my mum, but actually, a reference to a poster #askforangela that hangs in women’s loos in bars, pubs, and venues across the country which is part of a national campaign safersounds.org.uk wave that deals with sexual violence and abuse in communities,” according to lead singer Jenny Drag.

Here’s a bit more info from their press release. Andreas & The Wolf played the track on their July radio, where they likened it to Jitled John meets Lilly Allen! But I’m sure you’ll have heard it and know that aleady! If not, check the video on the next page and then go to bandcamp and do the right thing and buy it! The Priscillas are back with their brand-new digital single ‘Angela’ – and it feels like they’ve never been away! Blending crunchy guitar hooks, sweet harmonies and an infectious pop sensibility with searing social commentary, this bittersweet confection finds the band on roaring form on which they’ve built their reputation as one of London’s most exciting rock’n’roll bands.

Could it be any other way? Having blazed a trail with their own

thrill-inducing shows and festival appearances across the UK, Europe and the USA, The Priscillas have shared bills with The Damned, Pussy Riot and Gene Loves Jezebel among others, as well as recording celebrated sessions for BBC 6 Music, Resonance FM and WFMU in New York. Little wonder that The Priscillas’ status as Holloway’s bubblegum queens remains undiminished –and rightly so!

As mentioned in the intro... “’Angela’ is a code word. If you feel unsafe you can ask the bar staff if Angela is there, and they will inform a trained member of staff to help. I think we manage to convey a serious message but in an upbeat, catchy tune!”.

Recalling the song’s composition, Jenny Drag continues: “The first time we came across the poster was at Brixton Academy. When I saw it, I started singing versions of the lyrics and the other Priscillas started joining in with harmonies. It practically wrote itself.” The accompanying video was directed by Paul McLoone.

“It depicts three women (played by The Priscillas) in different scenarios where each feels cornered, uncomfortable, or intimidated when they’re going about their day or on a date,” explains Drag. “I’m playing the role of the bartender symbolising the beacon which is Angela. My message is for women to not be ashamed to ask for help and that if you find yourself in this situation, not to feel alienated as there are those who will understand and want to help. By the end of the video, all the women have taken control of their situation.”

She adds: “It is not an anti-men song; more an anti-creep song for women or anyone really, not to tolerate being put in a compromising position. Ask for help if needed, you won’t be judged!”
