Hello friends here’s a little insight into the world of Spotify for artists from a tweet from Crispin Hunt...

Pretty disgraceful fuzzy logic posturing by @spotify in pulling out of Uruguay , (using it as a global lobbying laboratory), because new regulation expects them to pay Equitable Remuneration to musicians, which Spotify say would make their business ‘untenable’ .

Err! Surely without musicians performances their entire business is ‘untenable’?

So ingrained has denial of exploitation in music become that even the most straightforwardly anti-creator tropes become normalised.

This logic seems to suggest that if a Music service actually pays musicians then its model is unviable? The only conclusion is yes, your model is unviable….. Equal rights for others does not, in any way, diminish your own. The only way such a proposition can be logical is if you derive your worth from an unfair advantage over others.

It is not ‘untenable’ to suggest that those who make Music should earn as much as those who sell it, is it?

Hi you guys - Welcome to the 50th issue of In The Club Zine! The big Five-Oh... that’s a pretty satisfying number.

So, thanks to YOU for being here to share it with us! If you’ve been here since the very beginning (preferring us over ‘Gardener’s Weekly’, ‘Yummy Mummy Monthly’ and ‘What Man Cave’) we are about to enter a Brand New Era (tm) of engagement, with MORE gigs, MORE features and MORE stuff you are gonna LOVE! So, what are these delicious and mystical New Ways of Thinking? Well...

1) We are setting up our own Perfect Pop Co Patreon!

Many of you will be aware of what Patreon is but if not, it’s a system which allows you - the fan - to help us do what we do in return for goodies! More on that in the New Year but in the meantime, visit patreon.com to Get Informed.

2) We’re not going to make you rely on idle gossip and MSM rumours for gig news.

We’re going send you regular updates as to what we’re up to, where we’re doing it and when (so you can book a day’s holiday accordingly. Naturally).

3) Like the glorious Mr Ant once said, we’re getting physical.

We’re gonna beam you back to the days of the Zerox Mowsheen... And start producing and distributing a new 2 page Pops(icle).... (see what we did there) so you’ve got something physical to grapple and graffiti on over a pint... and stick on your fridge as a reminder.

4) Two pronged band attack for 2024 Andreas & The Wolf AND Narcotic Hearts; with lots of new material boiling away and bubbling for release from both bands, 2024 is going to be EPIC. 5) The Radio Show Stays... but gains a small child.

Long term PPCO inmate Jordan will be putting out a new 20 minute weekly podcast, which will not only showcase the best that PPCO has to offer but be stuffed full of interviews and features.

6) Sorted for Tees and Branded Shiz If you’ve ever thought ‘What I really need in my life is that really cool PPCO T-Shirt... but on a MUG’, we’re setting up just the thing. Our expanded merch store is arriving as soon as Santa has left. Expect new designs as fast as Andy’s fevered mind can produce them.

It’s been a busy, busy few months since we last spoke.

MAD SQUIRREL, ST ALBANS We had a magnifique PPCO bank holiday with 2 Andreas & The Wolf and 3 Narcotic Hearts gigs. BIG M has been all WEDS 20 DEC 2023 over the gaff collating copious interesting artcles for your delight! We had a 4 way mash up at the 2nd Annual NARCOTIC HEARTS Perfect Pop Co review party as The TCs swapped headline with the previous party with Narcotic Hearts, My Life Story Support Andreas & The Wolf took main support, but for many The HORN it was a big highlight to see the return of The Scratch VICTORIA ST, St Albans for a first gig in over 11 years. Gary Hawkins (ace producer) sat in with Grim, John and myself for a THURS 15 FEB 2024 nostalgic quick fire set! But that’s not all from The Scratch or Gary Hawkins! 5th December sees the THE PERFECT POP CO REVIEW 3* release (via bandcamp) of a long lost album - LIVE AT THE TAP. which is brilliantly reviewed as ever by the PRIVATE PARTY: Featuring New & mighty Pete Ringmaster later in the mag.

Old PPCO Artists & DJ Ed! Then just last month Narcotic Hearts made a welcome SAT 12 OCT 2024 (DATE TBC) return to the fantastic Kevolution and also in Hertford Andreas & The Wolf played a storming set at the newly refurbished and very plush Hertford Corn Exchange, supporting Red snapper. Who by a quirk of PPCO fate were an unknown band to me at the time. Featured in the lyrics of The Scratch’s 2nd single x-ray eyes!

Speaking of who, you will see an advert above and within for a brand new never heard release by the band. Produced by Gary Hawkins.

Big M! Probes Jacob -Mastermind of ‘Mermaid Originals’ Hello beautiful ‘In The Club’ readers… Big M! here waving my mighty probe about again. This time, the recipient of my deep, vigorous probing is Jacob, the manager of The Mermaid pub on Hatfield Road. A great little boozer (The Mermaid not Jacob) with a great reputation. Recently, The Mermaid has started ‘Mermaid Originals’: an opportunity on the first Wednesday night of the month for ORIGINAL (Halle-fucking-lujah!) Bands and artists to strut their stuff.

As the Perfect Pop Co-Op’s very own Narcotic Hearts are putting in an appearance on Wednesday 6th December, I thought it would be a good idea to sit down with Jacob and find out more about ‘Mermaid Originals’…

BigM!: Hi Jacob, good to see you again, for our readers tell us a bit about your self.

Jacob: I’m the General Manager at the Mermaid, having been here for around 5 years now, and have worked in hospitality in St Albans and surrounding towns for about a decade.

BigM!: What’s the story behind ‘Mermaid Originals’?

Jacob: The Mermaid already has a very successful music night on a Sunday evening which is entirely covers bands. While we try to book quite a range of acts they can all tend to play very similar sets…

BigM!: …Yeah, yeah, good one, I’d not really thought of it like that…

BigM: Why now?

Jacob: …’Originals’ was based on wanting to build on that success while doing something different, and something I felt was missing in St Albans.

Jacob: …I also think it’s easier to go and listen to something you already know, and know you’ll like, than something new. Once you take into account travel and drinks etc. going to see bands can be expensive so I understand why people can be hesitant to take risks.

BigM!: Who are your favourite local band?

Jacob: Whenever I’ve seen them, King Violet have always put on a great show…

BigM!: Yeah… I know what you mean… I understand you’ve already had two ‘Originals’ nights.

BigM!: Why?

Jacob: They’ve been great! As with anything new there’s a worry that maybe nobody will turn up, but that’s not been the case at all…

Jacob: …They have a kind of punk sound but it never feels too heavy due to the vocals on the tracks. I’ve also seen them do a great cover I Want You (She’s So Heavy) which was stunning.

BigM!: How’s it going so far?

BigM!: Are there any particular bands or artists you would love to see at Mermaid Originals?

Jacob: …There’s been lots of positive feedback from artists who appreciate the opportunity to play their own stuff. And there’s also been the same from music fans who have come along saying it’s a welcome change to the music offering in St Albans, and even something that reminds them of the St Albans scene as it used to be.

BigM!: Ultimately, what would you view as ‘success’ for Mermaid Originals?

Jacob: Before we’d started I’d have said not having artists play to an empty room haha!

BigM!: Yeah… ha ha…

Jacob: Since that hasn’t been the case, giving artists who have maybe struggled to book gigs because they aren’t as known, or are just starting out, a stage to perform is worth it in my eyes.

Of course, that’s not to say I wouldn’t be particularly proud to have been part of the story for someone that ends up headlining Glastonbury, for example!

BigM!: Some people say there is a very vibrant music scene in St.Albans. This is true. From a certain point of view; i.e. you like covers bands who continuously churn out the same old songs.

What’s your view of this? Why do so many people from St. Albans refuse to be challenged into listening into something new and different?

Jacob: There’s so many haha! Other than King Violet, I’ve wanted to get the boys from Vertigo down playing their fun, soulful indie. I’d also like to find some slightly more dance-y acts to put on, some electro-pop maybe. Any leads, let me know!

BigM!: Ha ha! I’m sure The Perfect Pop Co-Op would have it covered with Electro Pop… We actually, recently did a gig with our friends at The Mad Squirrel Tap that was very successful and a lot of fun. Now with ‘Mermaid Originals’ as well it appears there might be a kernel of a scene developing. What do you think the future is for original music in St. Albans?

Jacob: I’ve also gotta shout out Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, and, of course, The Horn who both regularly put on original music… I’ve always thought a de-centralised festival like The Great Escape that they have in Brighton could work very well in St Albans, with lots of different venues co-ordinating on one line-up. We’ve definitely got the talent locally! With all of that, I think you might be right that there’s a kernel of a scene.

BigM!: Why is it important for original bands to get gigs do you think? Why don’t they just put all their content on line?

Jacob: I think both are important for getting music out to a wider audience! But as music fans we both know that there is something different about seeing live music. There’s an energy and spontaneity in a live setting that often can’t be caught when you’re in the studio…

Jacob: I think it’s a couple of reasons…

BigM!: Fucking right there is…

BigM!: Yeah… Go on…

Jacob: The nights are usually free entry, barring touring or tribute bands, so are seen as an addition to the night out and social side

Jacob: …And from a longer term perspective I think it’s important for artists to gain that experience. Would we have any of the great acts without them honing their skills playing live?

BigM!: Yeah… bang on…

Jacob: Would The Beatles have been the same without their time spent playing in Hamburg and Liverpool?

BigM!: Yeah… you are so right… so what sort of music are you into? If I had to nail you down who would you say your fave. Band/artist is?

Jacob: As a music fan I know YOU know what a hard question that is!

Big M!: Yeah…. Ha ha…. Why do you think I asked?

Jacob: I grew up and discovered music during what we’re now apparently calling ‘indie sleaze’ (whatever that means!) so bands like The Strokes, Interpol, The Libertines, Bloc Party, you know, were who I was reading about when I was buying the NME and first fell in love with. Then getting an iPod and discovering bands like the Violent Femmes, Beastie Boys and Joy Division led to me raiding my parents’ record collection and discovering Queen, The Beatles (of course) and Fleetwood Mac.

BigM!: What about now?

Jacob: Well…currently I’m listening to The National’s new albums, Aphex Twin after seeing his incredible set at Field Day this summer, and recently discovered CAN. In terms of my favourite artists: for me nobody has ever done it better than Bowie. He’d be my desertisland pick for sure. But I’d still rank The Clash and The Smiths very highly.

BigM:! What about your fave. Album?

Jacob: I can’t narrow it down to just one… Hmmm… so in no particular order-The Strokes, ‘Is This It’, Bowie… ‘Station to Station’….

BigM!: Great minds Jacob… Great Minds! ‘Station to Station’ is my Bowie Fav… Jacob: The Clash ‘London Calling’ and erm… LCD Soundsystem ‘LCD Soundsystem’ BigM!: Cool! Made you think… Heres another challenge for you, tell our readers 5 reasons (not including Perfect Pop Co-Op act The Narcotic Hearts are appearing on Wednesday 6th) why they should come along and check out Mermaid Originals?

BigM!: OK.. so what’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?

Jacob: It’s definitely hard to choose just one haha! The Rolling

Stones at Glastonbury 2013 was absolutely something else, hearing 150,000 people singing along to the songs I’ve grown up with was phenomenal. And to narrow down the best time I’ve seen LCD Soundsystem would be impossible, but during last year’s residency at Brixton Academy is definitely up there!

BigM!: Nice one… what about you?

Jacob: What about me?

BigM!: Do you play any instruments yourself?

Jacob: I started learning classical guitar from the age of about 7.

Then during secondary school I discovered that the finger picking technique I’d already learnt was the same way you could play a bass, so I ended up playing in a couple of groups with school friends. Unfortunately, life has kind of got in the way of me continuing to play regularly but it’s definitely something I want to get back into.

BigM!: Lets hope so… you really should… anyway mate, thank you for talking to us Jacob, we at the Perfect Pop Co-Op are really looking forward to Narcotic Hearts appearing on December 6th and naturally we wish you all the best for Mermaid Originals. If bands want to get involved how do they do that?

The PPCO’s two current poster acts, Narcotic Hearts & Andreas & The Wolf, the schizophrenic half brothers of former band the Tuesday Club, both lead by AVBD and Helmed by Dave deliver very different propositions that strangely work in tandem!

Former TC bassman The Beautiful Wolf anchors the sound of A&W which is swathed in 80s synth shimmer, with a sumptuous goth twist. While current TC Bassman Rogerio teams up to similar but wildly different effect with TCs guitarist J-Rod who now pounds the skins with metronomic swagger not seen since Klaus Dinger.

@bradwiggs A greatly received summer set at the Mad Squirrel saw all three of these acts gain an instant re-booking for what should be a top night of original tunes from downtown St Albans!

Do you remember before Manchester was cool?

When before ‘Madchester’ it was just another Northern town, decimated by the Thatcher years… all the traditional industry closing or closed. The mills, the workshops all derelict and abandoned.

Then in the late 70’s a bunch of maverick creatives came together to form Factory Records: an anarchic organisation that gave the power to the bands and the ‘rules’ were not merely disregarded but totally done away with. It was the record label that gave us Joy Division/New Order and The Happy Mondays, and the rest as they say is history…

Fast forward to the late 90’s/early 00’s, jump on The Inter-City, and travel 200 miles south to St Albans: I would sound completely mental if I suggested the city was comparable to Manchester pre Factory, but St. Albans had been ruined by the yuppies, the aspirational wanna be middle classes and the entitled. The place almost became a total cultural and creative vacuum, devoid of it’s squats, artists and bohemian attitude.

But all was not lost. Because, in 2011 another bunch of maverick creatives came together to form The Perfect Pop Co-Op. A bunch of disparate, music obsessives who do things on their own terms, who don’t chase the pound signs or the unit sales. A bunch of diverse individuals who collectively stuck two fingers up and shouted “fuck you” to the ‘industry’.

The Perfect Pop Co-Op a DIY record label with an eclectic, sometimes bizarre roster of performers.

The Perfect Pop Co-Op, with their own distinctive brand which is instantly recognisable if you are in the know and who have taken every single penny from their gigs, merchandise and record sales and put it straight back into the label.

The Perfect Pop Co-Op who do it for the love not to be trendy or hip.

So, on Saturday 14th October, The Perfect Pop CoOp held their 2nd Annual ‘Pop Co’ party.

Four Bands for the price of none.

The hottest ticket in town.

And I had one.

The location was The Barn at the famous St Albans venue The Horn, with Pop Co Merchandise and Memorabilia abound, band videos and performance footage being projected onto the walls the scene was set.

The Tuesday Club Possibly the archetypal cult band, previously described as ‘eclectic rock n roll vaudeville’ this six piece came together for a rare outing to open the evenings proceedings.

Kicking off with the deliciously eccentric ‘Harsh Tales of Ancient News’ from the 2014 EP ‘My Consciousness’ it was like they’d never been away as they rattled through songs from their entire back catalogue. Continued/...

Juggling 2 bands can be tricky, especially if they are completely different styles (ask our Rog). BUT playing one live show in four diferent bands on one night is something to only be tried on very special occassions! AND they don’t get much more special than The Perfect Pop Co’s (fast becoming) legendary Annual Review Parties at The Barn behind the Horn do they?

The Barn works for us cos its all self contained and we’re playing to the converted, you could say fans, but lets be honest in this nichey world we find ourselves in we see all of the people who support us as good friends. In the rapidly gentrified Barbers and Estate Agent satured metropolis of downtown SA it’s hard to break new ground. We decided for this party to give a bit of the familiar with a bit of the new wave, hence the order of show was turned on it’s head from last year with TCs kicking off the show and the new kids (ahem) on the block Narcotic Hearts taking the headline duties. We interspersed these too rockin lothiathans with our other current big and ever expanding baby Andreas & The Wolf and the new crowd pleasing, interacting and banging finale action, with the return after 11 years of the original band that brought all of the members of all of the bands on show and a lot of the audience too together in the first place The Scratch.

After a brief and fairly low-key set (by their standards) they were gone and we can only hope that is not the last time we see them.

The Scratch This band were so good their debut 7” single ‘I Relax To Spiral Scratch’ released in 2002, made a dent in Rough Trade’s sales figures.

This evening, featuring St. Albans’ legendary drummer Gary Hawkins guesting behind the kit, was the first Scratch gig in 12 years.

maestro Andrew Trussler’s debut gig and he has added some depth to an already great sounding band. The whimsical and romantic ‘All I Want Is You’ combines beautifully with the anthemic ‘We’re So Young’-this song could and SHOULD be a huge hit, it’s sing along chorus is infectious and just demands synchronised hand claps a la ‘Radio Ga Ga’. Narcotic Hearts Pure Pop Punk is the best way to describe the newest band to emerge from The Perfect Pop Co-Op with songs with choruses as loud as their shirts. Live at the Tap features the full first live set from The Scratch set recorded at The White Hart Tap, on Saturday 28th April 2011. Unfortunately set two got deleted somewhere over the evening, but looking back now it's great to have a record of some of the rarer less played live tracks. Case in point is Staving off The Where's or The Why's (possibly it's only live airing) a new song at the time of the gig and until now unreleased. Then there's fan favourite Narcotic Hearts which didn't often feature in the 'Greatest hits sets' and has now even spawned a new band of its own!

Then there's Let there be us from Great Adventure and Rotten Soul from the bands 2004 debut D.I.Y. Flicker from 2009's Whatever Happened to Friday Night none of these can have been played at more than a handful of live shows.

Live at the Tap is a fantastic record of the band at the top of their form, with great praise going to Gary for capturing so much of the excitement of The Scratch in full flight in what was a local back street pub, with no stage.

The latest Scant Regard could well be Will's most eclectic offering yet. It also features a couple of guests alongside the completely solo tracks. ‘On the Warpath’ is a crazed industro-funk workout featuring Mary Byker (Gaye Bykers On Acid, Pop Will Eat Itself, Apollo 440) on lead vocals.

‘Ride Alone’ which came to Will in a dream incorporates the dulcet tones of Maggie K De Monde (Scarlet Fantastic) on backing vocals.

Other highlights include the opening dystopian nightmare of ‘When the Gate Slams’, the wistful yet paranoid closer ‘I’m Gonna Give Your Love Away' plus a couple of classic twangy Scant instrumentals in ‘Uneasy Access’ and ‘Last Ditch Attempt’.

The electro-pop bliss of ‘Can’t Fight Forever' should also get a mention.

In this issue of In the Club the intrepid ‘BIG M’ once more swops his interviewing hat for a roving reporter one as part of a new feature for in the club on Record Shops (particularly ones selling vinyl) around the country. At The Perfect Pop Co-Op/In The Club we’re fanatical about our independence. We do things our way and we’re not going to be influenced or pushed around by anybody else.

I’d come inland… after my trips to costal record shops, I thought it was high time I made the trip to a shop in The Leafy, Green Shires that I had heard so many good things about but never had a chance to visit.

So one bus, two trains and a faulty map app later (this is how dedicated I am to bringing you these reviews) I found myself in Stevenage Old Town, standing outside Revolution Records.

Stevenage Old Town is the posh bit of Stevenage… More fur coat and no knickers than fake tan and piss stained jogging bottoms… Anyway moving swiftly on…

It looked like it was gonna piss it down, so I didn’t hang about for too long admiring the view, but got me self inside. The place is an absolute pleasure, a great combination of new and pre owned vinyl all laid out very well and presented logically.

It was late afternoon/early evening and the weather had been pretty terrible during

the day, but there were was still quite a steady flow of customers.

The 7”singles are all very visible which I really like. The 7” single is quite possibly the most crucial art form of the 20th Century and like I’ve mentioned before, I don’t like it when record shops hide these treasures away.

I could have done a lot of damage to my bank account in the 7” single section where everything was a quid, and I’m sure the next time I visit I will be indulging myself quite heavily.

In the album section, I found ‘Computer World’ on vinyl, but it was the English version, so that quest will have to continue. (See the review for Fives) Any record shop that stocks Adam And The Ants is immediately in my good books and Revolution Records certainly didn’t disappoint: ’Goody Two Shoes’ was the first single I ever bought. Back in 1982 I lived in Newport Pagnell, and I asked me Mum who worked in Milton Keynes to go to Virgin Records in the shopping centre on her lunch break to get me a copy of Adam Ant’s new single.

I’d been well gutted when I heard he’d split the Ant’s up, so being very young and very, very naive, when Mum came home that evening with the single and it said ‘Adam And The Ant’s’ on the cover, yours truly thought for a while it had all been some sort of elaborate hoax and Adam still had Marco, Merrick, Terry Lee and Gary Tibbs. Adam And The Ant’s got me into music and were my first musical obsession.

The previous Christmas had been one of the best ever, ‘cos me Dad had bought me ‘Kings of The Wild Frontier’ and ‘Prince Charming’ on cassette. And the way they had been wrapped (Or Ant Rapped if you like) meant I did not have a clue what they were, until I opened them. I was not allowed to listen to them until we had Christmas dinner. It was the longest wait ever in my young life.

And as soon as the Turkey, Spuds and Christmas Pud had been yammed down, I ran off to my bedroom to listen full of joy and anticipation. Oh, what an innocent, wondrous time it was back then! So to find this on picture disc in Revolution Records was a real treat. And I’m guessing ‘cos it says ‘Adam And The Ants’ it might be a pretty early

pressing.

‘Desperate But Not Serious’ was not a song I liked originally when Adam Ant went solo. I was too young to appreciate it. I wanted more of ‘Antmusic’ and ‘Stand And Deliver’. This sounded darker to my young ear at the time, but as I got older, I really started to like it. Really dug and appreciated the arrangement of the song, and it’s now probably one of my favourite songs by Mr Ant. So, from a collectors point of view, I thought I better have it to add to my collection of Adam Ant (And The Ants) vinyl which I had faithfully hung onto since I was a star struck kid.

Japan at the time were kinda too sophisticated for me. Remember-I lived in Newport Pagnell, where in those days NOTHING happened, and David Sylvian and his art-pop cohorts were completely non relatable to me. People like my cousin Dave, bought Japan records.

Dave was a few years older than me, lived in Harrow, had an Atari games console AND a drum kit AND was already in a band. Dave was cool.

Newport Pagnell was not.

People like Dave understood Japan and the glamour of Bowie, Synth Pop the New

owner Brian was friendly and knowledgable in a quiet, understated way. He also offered to let me listen to anything I was interested in before I purchased it. If you are buying 2nd Hand Vinyl, this can be very important.

So, again-more brownie points for Revolution Records.

Records bought:

Romanic sub culture. All I understood was that I was rubbish at almost everything, but if I ever got a drum kit or a guitar then it might help me actually express what I was feeling one day.

I bought the Sonny Burgess record, ‘cos I’ve always kinda enjoyed listening to Rockabilly, but I don’t think I’ve actually got much of it in my collection. I’ve always found it quite uplifting and just what’s needed as the Winter nights draw in. Additionally, I like the quirkiness of the 10” formatI’ve now got about half a dozen or so pieces in my collection, and as this particular record was also on

coloured vinyl, it was a bit of a no brainer for me.

To my eye, everything I saw in Revolution Records was fairly priced and the coowner Brian was friendly and knowledgable in a quiet, understated way. He also offered to let me listen to anything I was interested in before I purchased it. If you are buying 2nd Hand Vinyl, this can be very important.

So, again-more brownie points for Revolution Records.

The shop doesn’t just sell vinyl: I think I may have seen some CD’s. But there were definitely t-shirts and books on sale. In fact in addition to my

So, if you are in the area, and regardless whether you only have a passing interest in Vinyl or you are seriously into, and collecting music the proper way, then this place is well worth a visit. Name: Fives Records Date of Visit: 4th November 2023 Location: Leigh on Sea, Essex This time I’ve come to Leigh On Sea. It’s the posh bit of Southend. You know… it’s more wine bars and cocaine cut with baking powder than Wetherspoons and cheap heroin cut with dried pigs blood…More telescopic cosh than rusty Stanley Knife…

Anyway! Moving on, I caught the train here, and if you do visit just bear in mind it’s a good 10-15 mins walk up hill from the Station.

Fives is easy to find, smack bang in the middle on a parade of shops. From the outside the place looks like it

could do with a bit of tarting up, but inside, everything is laid out well.

The shop is split into two sections: CD’s in the front and the vinyl towards the back-so that is where I headed: the racks are well laid out with plentiful space inbetween-I kinda hate it when you go to some record shops, the aisles are really narrow and when you have to pass a fellow punter who is also browsingit can almost feel like you are getting intimate with them.

All I could see was new vinyl, I’m not saying Fives don’t stock used records, but I couldn’t see any. But the upside is that there is loads and loads of stock. I didn’t find any hidden, long lost gems, everything I saw was what you would expect to find. But this might be because I could only see new products and nothing vintage.

Everything is as you would expect-the stock is in alphabetical order and there are separate sections for Jazz, Blues, Punk and Hip-Hop etc.

So the shop does cater for a wide variety of musical tastes which is exactly the way it needs to be.

It seems, long gone are the days where there

were specialist shops that only dealt with Drum ’n’ Bass,Metal or reggae etc. (If any of these specialist shops DO still exist, then please drop us a line at ‘In The Club’ and let us know, as we’d love to hear about them).

I’d like to see more independent record shops dedicate a section of their racks to independent, bands/ artists who aren’t signed to record labels. I’d also like shops to push independent bands a bit more, by giving their records a spin every now and then. Bands and Record shops are symbiotic.

You cannot really have one without the other. Who is with me on this?

Unlike other shops I’ve visited, I was not exactly overwhelmed by the warmth of the staff: Some geezer, who I presume is the owner who has run the gaff for decades asked if I was looking for anything in particular and when I thanked him and replied “I was just browsing”-that was the end of that interaction. The Woman behind the counter said nothing at all, was just going on to some other person about court orders and depressing domestic situations which descended on me like a cloud of Jeremy

Kyle show ennui! I want my record shop experiences to he happy and uplifting! Not like script read through for an episode of ‘Eastenders’.

I was really looking for a German language version of Kraftwerk’s’ ‘Computer World’-I’ve wanted this for my collection for sometime, but it continues to elude me. And yeah… I KNOW, I could order it on line, but thats really not the point.

I like to go to real physical shops and browse real physical objects and feel happiness and delight when I do find something I want or something that looks interesting.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t locate any Kraftwerk records at all, but there was a impressive selection of albums by The Kinks in the ‘K’ section and I was very tempted to add to my collection of records by the English social and cultural commentators from Muswell Hill.

I also saw a copy of Public Enemy’s ‘Yo! Bum Rush the Show’ which again, I was sorely tempted to part with my folding for. But in the end, I went for something that caught my eye, by a band I’d never, ever heard of. Again.

’High Risk Behaviour’ by The Chats: An Australian Garage Punk band, who I believe are supporting the Foo Fighters on their upcoming MegaEnormodome Tour. (Tickets: a mere 200 quid folks!)

This for me, is another reason I don’t buy music on line, you just can’t replicate the experience of flicking through the racks and finding something that just looks interesting, and getting all excited as you get home and take off the shrink wrap, carefully take the record out of it’s inner sleeve and place it on the turntable for the first time, not completely certain what is going to emerge from your speakers.

In this case, The Chats ain’t gonna change music as we know it anytime soon, I doubt they have any Golden Eggs up their musical arses, but they sound like right Aussie larrikins with upbeat, shouty tunes and are great for letting off a bit of steam.

I bloody love records.

Therefore, once again, I have been on my travels to the coast, to purchase vinyl and to review an independent record shop for the beautiful readers of ‘In The Club’.

The racks in Fives are so tightly packed, it’s actually quite tricky to ‘flick’ through them-this is a very minor criticism. And let’s face it: it’s better for all concerned that a shop has loads of stock as opposed to not enough.

Just don’t expect to be welcomed with open arms-I didn’t even get a “thank you” from the lady. I’d say the staff are more efficient than warm. But this again is a minor point. If you are in the area, do pop in, if you like your music you will probably find something that you like.
