LOCAL BUSINESSES LAUNCHED IN LOCKDOWN! Spring 2021 | 1

www.sophias-diary.com

From the editor Hello Spring, Hello Families!! I have never been so excited to write to my readers and launch an issue of a magazine! More so now than at Christmas and that is saying something! This magazine celebrates the first step of freedom and resuming normal life again. The road map clearly outlines returning to things we enjoy, socialising, and being reunited with people we miss dearly. What we want to see more than anything is families having fun, children restarting things they love, businesses having stability, and recovering revenue lost due to being closed on and off for over a year. More importantly, we want to spend quality time with the people we love again, go to live events and have the freedom to make plans. It is a huge celebration for the UK, and the only thing we can hope for this year is that nothing gets in the way of it.

In this issue

Lockdown has given us all time to reflect on life, spend more time at home and we have thought about what we really love doing. Let’s be more impulsive with chasing what we are passionate about, as we have seen how quickly things can change and totally out of our control too. I hope all my readers have a wonderful summer, enjoy being reunited with loved ones and capture images of smiling faces.

Lots of Love Your Editor, Andrea xx Andrea Krase Director Sophia’s Diary

CREME EGG CHEESECAKE (Serves 6-8)

If you are looking for inspiration in the kitchen, then this no-bake cheesecake is a great recipe for the kids to make. It’s especially good if you are looking to use up the excess chocolate eggs from Easter! It’s a good basic no-bake cheesecake recipe that can be topped with anything from fresh fruit to any of your favourite chocolate bars or biscuits. It can also be made using individual ramekin pots, you would need 6 for this recipe. YOU WILL NEED: • Ingredients 10 Digestives 75g Butter 200g Cream Cheese 150g Double Cream 75g Icing Sugar

1 Grease the tin with butter. Put Digestives into a resealable plastic bag and bash them with the rolling pin until they are like crumbs.

GET AN ADULT TO HELP: Melt the butter in a pan, once melted add the digestive crumbs and mix thoroughly. 2

3 Press biscuit mixture in to the tin and press down well, put into the fridge to set.

In the medium bowl, mix the cream cheese and icing sugar together. 4

• Decorate: 3-4 Creme Eggs or mini crème eggs 75g Icing Sugar Yellow/orange food dye 40g Milk chocolate (melted) • Utensils: 8” cake tin/dish Rolling pin Small pan Large bowl Medium bowl Wooden Spoon

5 In the large bowl whip the double cream until it is thick and forms peaks, then add the cream cheese mixture to the cream and mix thoroughly. 6 Spread evenly on the top of the biscuit base and fridge for a few hours. 7 Carefully, remove from tin and before serving, mix the icing sugar with a little water to form a thick but drip consistency. Drizzle half of this white icing across the top then add a few drops of yellow/ orange colouring to the rest of the mixture and drizzle this across the top of the cheesecake. Slice the crème eggs in half and place round the sides and drizzle the melted chocolate over the top.

I would love to see your creations, Enjoy! www.sophias-diary.com

The Beauty Spot London LOOKING BODY BEST FOR THE SUMMER AND AFTER LOCKDOWN

INTERVIEW WITH SEYDA FROM THE BEAUTY SPOT IN SWISS CARE CLINIC IN WINCHMORE HILL HI SEYDA. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF NATIONAL MEDIA ATTENTION FOR 3D LIPO. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT IT? WHAT IS 3D LIPO? 3D Lipo is an almost instant way to remove fat in a non-surgical way. It is not invasive, painful and there is no downtime. It targets fat in several different ways. It reduces fat cells and reduce cellulite, tightens the skin and contours the shape of the body. HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK? With Cavitation, an Ultrasound wave shakes the fat cells so they are destroyed and this enables them to leave the body via the lymphatic system. This allows instant results. Up to 7inches can be lost in a course treatments. Patients have a choice of adding skin tightening and fat melting. The fat cells that leave will never come back, however new fat cells can grow back if there is weight gain. Fat Freezing (Cryolipolysis) – This is a longerterm treatment that is suitable for small pockets of fat (e.g. Flanks, Back, Tummy, Arms, Inside thighs). Results are seen within 2-4 months and treatments can only be offered once every 6 months. 20 – 40% of fat cells are lost in treatment. Fat does not grow back with stable weight. WHERE DOES THE FAT GO, IF THERE IS NO SURGERY? Fat is broken down in both procedures and permanently leaves via the lymphatic system in other words through your urine. You do not have to workout during this treatment but upping your water intake Is vital to give optimal results.

LET’S TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH - 3 IDEAS TO CONSIDER AS A FAMILY I AM AN ACCREDITED YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AIDER AND DELIVERING 2 DAY YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH ACCREDITED COURSES LATER IN THE YEAR FIND TIME EACH WEEK TO CHECK IN AS A FAMILY WITH EACH OTHER.

HOW DO YOU AS A FAMILY DEAL WITH STRESS?

Family meetings can be useful for this, where there is an opportunity for everyone to speak about how their week has gone, what is coming up – they may be facing a test or an assessment, have an art day, be getting involved in a school fundraiser etc. The family meetings that work the best are ones where everyone is equal and has a say on how they are run and what the agenda is. They become part of the family weekly schedule.

Do you do activities together, for example a walk, a bike ride, a movie afternoon, baking together, go for a run around in the garden or the local park? Playing sports outside? As parents, our children are watching how we deal with stress ourselves. If we want them to feel more able to talk about their feelings and perhaps when things don’t go to plan, we need to be showing them how we look after ourselves and what we do for self maintenance to support our mental health.

WE ALL HAVE MENTAL HEALTH When we are feeling unwell or have a suspected injury we ring the GP and ask their advice. Who does your child turn to if they are struggling with their anger, their confidence, their friendships or pending assessment stresses? Do you create some space every week to spend a little individual time with them? If they are already helping you out preparing dinner together you could chat then? Car journeys are another popular place to catch up as there is no direct eye contact, they know how long the journey is so it can be comfortable knowing that you just have 10 minutes before they leave the car.

If you are struggling with your mental health please find someone to talk to, whether that is a parent, a teacher or a professional like myself they can provide a listening ear and some suggestions for on-going support.

"We can’t always choose the music life plays for us, but we can choose how to dance to it. "

FA S H I O N

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT WHEN BUYING A

Summer Dress

SHAPE For boyish physiques with a straight torso and slim legs, a straight shift or trapeze shape is best and a shorter hemline will showcase your legs. Those with a defined waistline will look best in styles with gentle shaping or a belt at the waist to highlight your curves. Petites who find that they get ‘lost’ in a maxi dress, should instead look for a ‘mid-axi’ length which sits at the lower calf just above the ankle. When buying a long dress, sleeves should be no longer than the elbow otherwise, it may look too heavy on your frame. Bigger chested ladies should avoid spaghetti straps and off the shoulder styles and look for wider straps, sleeveless or short sleeved styles and the neckline should not be too high. Curvy ladies should avoid pleats and instead look for styles with shaping at the waist and an A-line skirt that gently skim the hips.

WHAT DRESS STYLES ARE BIG THIS SUMMER, EASY TO WEAR AND CAN BE WORN DIFFERENT WAYS? The newest addition to the ‘prim and proper’ trend that we’ve seen emerging over the last 12 months is the Laura Ashley inspired, little house on Prairie look. Brands like Batsheva and The Vampire’s Wife are championing this trend and Urban Outfitters has even launched a collection in collaboration with Laura Ashley. Think high necklines and puffed sleeves. This is not specifically a floral trend. Plaids and stripes are a-plenty. These can easily be dressed down with cross body bags and chunky sandals or trainers. Alternatively, pair them with heels and a clutch plus fabulous earrings for a very chic, willowy evening look.

10 | Spring 2021

www.sophias-diary.com

WHAT MAKES A SUMMER DRESS VERSATILE, SOMETHING THAT CAN BE TAKEN FROM DESK-TO-DRINKS? The fabric plays a crucial role here. If the fabric has too much sheen it can be difficult to dress down in a conservative environment. Conversely, a very casual fabric like a seer sucker or a loose weave linen, can read too casual to pair comfortably with smart accessories. Print also has a role to play. A very informal print on a matte base fabric can read very ‘daytime’. On the other hand, if the same print appears on a smoother fabric with a little sheen, it instantly elevates the print making it more versatile. The majority of dress shapes will work from day to night when paired with the right accessories.

COLOUR Having more skin exposed in summer means it’s crucial that the colour of your dress enhances your complexion. Consider whether your skin tone is warm or cool in the same way you would when selecting a foundation shade. The easiest way to assess this is by comparing cool silver and warm gold jewellery against your skin to see which compliments and sits best with your colouring. Cool skin tones suit blue based colours including blue based pinks and reds. Warm skin tones suit yellow and green based shades including corals, oranges and turquoise. WHAT COLOURS ARE BIG THIS SEASON THAT WE SHOULD THINK ABOUT WHEN SUMMER DRESS SHOPPING? It’s summer so it should not come as a surprise that an ‘all white’ look is bang on trend. Whilst we are in the midst of an ‘anything goes’ era in terms of colour, the colour families getting the most media attention are Sunset shades, warm Pinks, Reds, Oranges and Yellows as well as Pastels. We can’t speak about SS21 without mentioning the Beige trend! Muted neutrals have been huge this year and worn head to toe or mixed with a bright colour pop.

LOCAL BUSINESSES LAUNCHED IN LOCKDOWN! You finally go for the plunge, go ahead with your dream and launch that businesses! Then Lockdown strikes! How did these business women feel? How did they adapt? Here are 2 stories of how they coped.

diddi dance, Enfield and Potters Bar Owner: Constantina Menezes Date the Business Launched: 14th February

HI COS, HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN LOCKDOWN WAS ANNOUNCED SO SOON AFTER BUYING THE FRANCHISE? Hi Andrea, I felt really empty, stressed anxious and angry as I just started the business and literally had to stop running overnight. I only managed to run 3 sessions before restrictions were announced. After taking out a loan and spending thousands on the franchise fee, I knew I would not be able to monetise the business for a while. Although diddi dance was established, I barely knew the parents, so their loyalty to still remain as clients was questionable at this point. I was not entitled to any financial help as this was a brand new business.

HOW DID YOU ADAPT YOUR BUSINESS? I changed the business to online only and ran Zoom Classes and Facebook Lives. I taught parents how to make props at home so children could still participate. Although I had so much support from head office on how to run our business online and to not be afraid, I missed out the franchise’s in person team building session and awards night so I did not feel as connected to the team. I had not connected with my teachers properly and resources had to be delivered in a contactless way. I did not even have the chance to introduce myself properly and establish a relationship with them. 16 | Spring 2021

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST WHEN RESTRICTIONS EASE? I cannot wait to launch classes and see children’s happy faces in real life. I am so excited about teaching in nurseries. I have not had the opportunity to host a birthday party even. diddi dance has now has a permanent home that we have not been able to use yet. Mima's Place, Bush Hill Park Owned by sisters Marina Michael and Eleni Menezes Premises were brought on 30th November 2020 and the shop Opened 8th February 2021.

HI LADIES, HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN LOCKDOWN WAS ANNOUNCED SO SOON AFTER COMPLETING THE PURCHASE OF THE SHOP? Hi Andrea, we were so excited when we picked up the keys for Mima’s Place. Our plan was to offer takeaways and groceries so we knew we had a safety net to gain sales. However, lockdown created the struggle of getting appliances and goods as tiers were changing so quickly. This delayed getting the shop ready for opening, which meant a hit in sales. How did you adapt your business? We quickly researched and selected different and more local companies as suppliers so we could actually start operating.

HOW HAVE LOCKDOWN RESTRICTIONS IMPACTED THE BUSINESS? We have really missed out on customers not being able to sit in the Deli for food and drink due to restrictions. This makes each working day different to what we planned and expected. The lack of passers-by, commuters, school parents and local shops being closed due to lockdown have meant fewer people have visited our shop on a daily basis. There has been no financial support to subsidies the loss in demand and change in tiers and restrictions.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST WHEN RESTRICTIONS EASE? We cannot wait for customers to dine in the deli and build a rapport with them. We are looking forward to a gaining better and happier atmosphere, as currently customers are all talking about the same thing – being frustrated in lockdown. It is a shame that we have not got to know the locals. We have plans for special evening events, and activities for children onsite. We are excited about creating a more family orientated venue. Organising a Safe Spring Party By Valentina Achillea

THEME Choose a theme for the party (e.g. Teddy Bears picnic!). Match the birthday cake, party invitations, tableware, party decorations and party bags to your chosen theme.

VENUE GARDEN • Consider the size and how many children it can accommodate comfortably and safely • Plan seating areas for parents • Decorate with bunting/balloons to give that party feel • Beware of British summer weather - have a back-up plan in case of rain (e.g. gazebo). HIRE OF VENUE • Book at least 2 months in advance to secure your preferred date • Confirm timings, keys, set up and set down rules!

COVID SECURE Nobody likes this, but we need to be aware of the risks and act accordingly. • Follow government advice and stick to the rules • Encourage washing of hands and sanitise regularly • Ask party entertainers for their health and safety risk assessment.

ENTERTAINER Booking an entertainer for the party is highly advisable. • Check out reviews, and word of mouth recommendations to ensure a professional service. • The entertainer will alleviate the stress of the party allowing you to relax and enjoy your child’s special day.

FOOD Due to the sheer excitement and distractions on the day, you will find that the children do not eat a lot during the party. Elaborate and fancy food, therefore is not really necessary as children are happy with sandwiches, crisps, fresh fruit & vegetable platters and some chocolate/sweet treats. But don’t forget the cake!

Teddy Tastic are Sophia’s Diary Award Winning party entertainers who specialise in make-a-bear parties using their unique teddy bear stuffing machine! They also host Superhero Parties, Disco Tastic and Slime Parties! You can also order make-a-bear packs and outfits from their website,

Roadmap to Better Brows HOW TO RECOVER FROM LOCKDOWN BROW SYNDROME

During this lockdown, there’s no denying that many of you have let your brows go. After all, you’re not seeing anyone in person, right? Plus, pixelated Zoom calls and fantastic filters do regrowth a lot of justice. But with freedom in sight, now is a good time to think about brow recovery. If you aren’t sure where to begin, you aren’t alone! Never fear, though! I’m here to help! There are loads of wonderful treatments out there that can help you to turn eyebrow tragedy into Instagram fire. Here’s the perfect roadmap for you to get the brows you deserve: 12th April Release – Tidy up those bad boys with a threading treatment. Make sure that you find someone who’s not too thread-happy! After all, the current fashion is full and fluffy, so you don’t want your therapist to thread away that full lockdown growth! If in doubt, check their social media to see their Best of Brows! Threading gives you the best definition, but if you prefer to wax, look out for the gentle and effective Lycon treatment!

Microblading Miracles – if you’re still looking like you’re about to roll out of bed and onto a Zoom meeting, microblading will get you prepared for those socially-distanced, face-to-face chats. Since you’ve got your mask on, your eyes and brows will have to do the talking, after all! You’ll get that flawless brow look every day with no effort and feel ready to face the outside world. 22 | Spring 2021

Could they do with a little tint? Over time, eyebrows can lose some of their colour. So, to help you to capture that beautiful, full look, a tint could be perfect for you!

Still looking a little sparse? You can fill them in with a brow pencil, brow powder and gel. Bring in the drama! Brow laminations are all the rage right now, and for good reason! This little brow tamer sets those unruly hairs so that you look ready for the public at all times.
