Welcome to Sophia’s Diary Summer issue! Is it the last half term already? Are you happy they the days have got longer and the social calendar is getting busier? It gives me great pleasure to launch Sophia’s Diary’s second online magazine. Summer is my favourite time of the year. It’s where my favourite memories are created, we have the most fun and everyone else around us is most happy. Does anyone else find that you want to socialise more and go out when the sun is shining? I was so excited editing this magazine for you, as it has so many great ideas for families and parents to do. Spend your days exploring and trying something new, regardless of what budget you have. The 6-week break lasts for such a long time too so we know some families may need some help with childcare and activities. We have some great ideas from reputable local camps in different locations. TotallyJustMe Film Production Summer Workshop is where 24 students will get the chance to shoot and edit their very own short film in collaboration a team. Work together with a real-life client to create three advertisement videos. Develop skills from pre-production to postproduction. As a group you will devise a concept, storyboard and script your short film. You will then learn about crew roles & responsibilities before rotating roles to shoot and direct your short film. You will be taught how to use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit your short film before using all the skills you have acquired to work and complete a brief from a real-life client. This Workshop is suitable for anybody interested in studying all elements of film, aged 14-17 years old. You will develop your creative and practical film making skills, whilst learning to use industry standard editing software and operate a C100 DSLR camera. Summer 2019

Salisbury House is a Grade II* listed late Tudor Manor House build in the early 17th Century and once formed part of Bury Lodge. It is situated in the beautiful Bury Lodge Gardens on the borders of Edmonton and Bush Hill. Salisbury House was Enfield’s first Arts Centre which opened in 1957. The Dugdale Centre Theatre Venue Hire Concerts and Conferences
The Dugdale Centre is perfectly situated in the heart of Enfield Town, served by many bus routes, the London Overground and rail services. Outdoor Fun! The Great Outdoors, The most simplest of Playtimes.
Hallelujah! Summer is nearly here. I can’t even put into words as to how I feel about Summer. I live for it and mourn its loss till about the first hot day of the year.
But what does Summer mean for me as a mum?
The Great Outdoors!
Bye-bye ram packed screaming softplays, dark over air-conditioned cinemas and painting yet another piece of pottery that yes, I have to return to the shop to pick up! (long). Hello gardens, parks, farms, forests and anywhere where my kids can run freely whilst unleashing their inner lunatic. (Not so much “inner” with my two - but we weren’t really expecting anything more, or less to be honest!)
The benefits of outdoor play are endless: Exploring and learning through different sensory experiences, developing motor skills and not to mention the many health benefits (both physical and mental). However, from a constantly tired mother (a whole other story), it all boils down to this one mightly important reason, which, we all know about really. Research shows that babies, toddlers and children sleep better if they’ve had some fresh air and sunshine during the day.
EVERYONE OUTSIDE NOW!!! Coming second to this is the fact that outdoor play doesn’t break the bank. Here I will share my top 4 things to do with my kids that are, you guessed it, absolutely free! And to top it off I’ll throw in some useful links to get you well on your way to some fun outdoor play.

1. Scavenger Hunt The second I gave my 6 year old Paul the sheet below, (on a clipboard with a somewhat funky pen) he was sold. Clipboards mean “this is serious stuff ” to a 5 year old and a pen that has never been seen before - well - they’re gonna be wondering what else you’ve got up your sleeve. So simple - something that’s different to them. If you regularly use clipboards and funky pens with your kids then there’s still lots more to this! (but I strongly believe in setting the scene). The below scavenger hunt sheet is available to download via: https://www. stayathomemum.com.au/printables/ nature-scavenger-hunt-free-printable/ Whilst it was the most appropriate one I could find for my kids (aged 2 and a half and 5 and a half), there’s loads more to choose from if you’re up for something more challenging! This is such a good activity if you don’t really feel like being super active but still want to get some fresh air! My son was so hyperactive when he was younger that being outdoors meant me running... (sprinting) after him. I wish I tried this one years ago. But hands-down the best thing about this activity is that the kids are being mindful. Being one with nature and using all of their senses to just be in the moment. A brilliant one for everyone really. Being outdoors in beautiful weather makes it so much easier to just be. Also a big LOL: Watch them nearly poop (put politely) themselves when they find some of the harder items on the list. Then, return to sensible parenting and enjoy that such things can make them that excited.
Apart from actually finding the items (can a cloud be called an “item”?), both Paul and Lily really loved giving the box a big tick. I could literally see the satisfaction oozing out of them - like “I’ve got a box to tick, I have ticked it, I have accomplished something”. And they really did! I guess we’re all just trying to tick our boxes in life, whether they’re visible or not. Also, it sparked up an interesting conversation about the boxes that we didn’t manage to tick. Disappointment is natural in life and this is a really easy way to talk about it with kids. Remember, it’s not to say you won’t ever get to tick the butterfly off, it just means that you may tick that box another time, whether it be next week, month or year. We only did ours a few days ago, so believe me, i’m on a massive butterfly hunt! We did this hunt in our garden, but I strongly suggest taking them to a forest for this one. Trent park is lovely as is Capel Manor gardens for these kind of things.

2. Super Hero Sports Day So I’ll be honest – we haven’t managed to get round to this one yet but I can’t wait to do this, obviously I’ve got it all planned out! Firstly, to set the scene, make a poster a few days before, noting your family and friends of the date, time and location of the sports day. Very serious business and a great little activity where your kid is unknowingly practicing their fine motor skills and writing through art. Hang this on the front door and rope anyone who dares visit you that week! People will feel too bad to say no (given how much effort went into the poster!) or they’ll be genuinely intrigued by the crazy seriousness of it all. Before the time arrives set up a table (with the kids) of water and oranges. My kids absolutely love helping out in the kitchen and laying tables so I’m sure they’ll like this. Place some plastic medals on the table (all supermarkets will have their own in the kids party section - a multipack for partybags cheap and cheerful). Remember - everyone gets a medal at the end! Also - mum doubles up as referee - standard procedures (everyone knows to listen to mum!). Set the games up whilst the children are getting ready in their super hero sports day outfits. The

more ridiculous the better! (And don’t forget your own one – we’ve found tea-towels tied together make great capes!). The Games are totally adaptable to you but here’s a couple that we’ve got scheduled: Classic egg and spoon race: Give everyone a real egg please. You wouldn’t cook with a plastic egg would you? (Note: Save this game till last – you don’t want to be doing a wheelbarrow race over raw eggs!) Broom Hockey: This was originally an indoor game that Lily made up and we can’t wait to play it outside! Get as many brooms as you have - we only have three so make sure people bring a broom if they can (a strange request to ask of a guest). Only play with close family and friends and still with the risk of looking a bit loopy. Form two teams; score by using your broom as a hockey stick to sweep the ball in the goal. Easy peasy. Note: the smaller toy brooms are really good for little ones to get better control! After all the games – pick your favourites, we’ll definately be adding rounders to ours - total which team won and get the mumaree to present all team memebers (not just winners) with a medal. Speeches welcome.
3. Water-play Make them useful and play Car Wash! (as long as you can safely park the car in a driveway). Give them warm soapy water, sponges and scrapers and then let them hose it down after. Whenever we’ve played this I’ve printed out some ‘Car Wash Coupons’ that I found online (good old scene setting again!). Available to download @ https://freeprintablesonline. com/2018/08/printable-car-wash-tickets/ We also blast music from the radio, everyone’s happy when the sun’s out so nobody will mind (I hope!). The kids get absolutely soaked and are happy to receive some change - the rule being, whatever money you find in the car you can keep for your “hard work”. Paul found £7 last time - I could have added a few onto there and gone to an actual carwash! (but where’s the fun in that?). To be honest, daddy always plants the money there. Sweet - I wish someone planted money where I cleaned. I’d be a billionaire!
4. Teddybears picnic This was actually something Paul did at nursery a couple of years ago. They all made invitations to their chosen teddy regarding the picnic and simply put, they all had a little snack in the garden with their teddies. Cute. Paul loved it so much that we recreated it with the addition of Lily and her collection of ducks. Firstly, make the invitation. If you want to look super cool download this one from http://kidspartyinvites. blogspot.com/2009/03/teddy-bears-picnic.html We decided to invite three teddy’s each, as, being just the three of us, we didn’t want our party to look lame, plus, we always make more food than we can actually eat so plenty to go round! Secondly, make the picnic. Paul learnt how to make a cheese sandwich (with a star cookie cutter) and enjoyed cutting up the fruit and veggies. This was great as we got to discuss some very basic knife safety tips whilst in the kitchen. Lastly, lay out lots of blankets and set the picnic up and enjoy. It’s amazing how much kids actually enjoy helping.

Summer Holidays Not Planned Yet? With Summer around the corner our thoughts go to summer escapes! If you have young children, older children or maybe both or there are just the two of you. I can help. There are so many places to experience; that is often the problem; then the decision whether you are going long-haul or short haul, cruise, self-drive or anything in between. Write down all your likes and dislikes, the countries/places you have already been to and also the ones you would like to visit. It’s usually a good idea to have an idea of your budget although some are lucky enough not to have worry about this of course. Do you like villa holidays maybe? Here is one in the South of France – Languedoc area. If you like peace and quiet in combination with good food and wine – it may well be what you are looking for!
Maybe further afield with a Safari in Africa? Beach holiday in Dubai? Walt Disney world in Florida? A cruise? Cruising: you can choose one of the floating cities with four or five thousand passengers on with every type of entertainment, restaurant, bar and kids clubs you can imagine or choose one of the smaller ships, around 250 passengers, where you travel at a slower pace with more lowkey entertainment but exceedingly good food of course. River cruises are amazing and you see the world with different eyes for sure. European waterways, Vietnam, The Amazon and more. Choices Choices Choices…. We all say that the world is getting smaller, but it still takes time, effort and patience to organise that all important holiday.

When I went on my honeymoon to Mauritius we could be served our breakfast on our own private terrace looking out over the Indian Ocean. It would have been idyllic, if it weren’t for one thing destined to ruin it for me. There were tiny birds that would flit over as soon as we were served, and sit on our table. Even I, with my lifelong fear of birds, could see how pretty these brightly coloured birds were. But I couldn’t stand to have them near me. So instead of enjoying the azure blue ocean with my breakfast each day, we ate in the room. Six months later I decided that enough was enough, and I sought the help of a hypnotherapist to address my fear of birds. I was sceptical as to whether it would really work, but in one session I found myself completely fear free. More than that, when I see a bird now I’m drawn to look at it, they make me laugh, and I find myself chatting to them. I have a distant memory that I used to have a crippling fear of anything that flies, but it is no more than that. Now I have trained as a clinical hypnotherapist, I love nothing more than helping a person to work on those areas of their life that are limiting their happiness.
There is little better than getting an update from a client that they had managed confidently in a situation that might have caused them extreme anxiety before. A client who came to me with a spider phobia recently sent me a photo of her hand beside a tarantula, taken on holiday in Ecuador. She loved her time in the Amazonian rainforest, a trip that she wouldn’t have dared make before. The change of season is often a time when people have to revisit a fear or a phobia that had laid dormant for a year. A fear of flying would be enough to limit the options for a family holiday. Wasps and bees buzzing around would, for other people, be enough to fear this time of year. And having to make a wedding speech might be overshadowing an otherwise happy time. If you have a fear, a phobia, or something in your life that you know just needs to change, hypnotherapy can bring fast and long lasting results. One or two sessions is usually sufficient to address an issue, and your very best summer yet can soon be here! I’m off to Venice. There are about 40,000 pigeons I’ve yet to meet!

Pick your form of Entertainment
So you have organised your styling, and now you know exactly what theme you are going for. Now is the time you realise… uh oh… what will they actually do? DO NOT PANIC! You still have budget for Entertainment (remember!) so you can now choose what style would work best for your child and their friends. Pop the food in a couple of cardboard treasure chests! Fairy party? Add edible glitter to everything! Small, yet effective. Most importantly, STRESS FREE.

Enfield Town Schools’ Partnership The Enfield Town Schools’ Partnership (ETSP) is an exciting alliance of 20 richly diverse schools in Enfield. We work together to ensure our pupils experience an excellent, broad and balanced education. Our pupils have engaged in projects creating and exhibiting original artworks, writing and performing poetry, participating in outdoor activity days to support the transition to secondary and exploring the world of science. We have worked with professional poets, artists and scientists to ensure pupils get the most from these projects and delivered these events in local venues including Forty Hall Estate, the Dugdale Centre and Chace Community School. We encourage our pupils to think about the world we live in and how they can become the global citizens of the future. Debating competitions have promoted discussion about topical issues and encouraged independent opinion and persuasive arguments. 1 egg 2 tblsp vegetable oil 2 tblsp milk half tsp vanilla extract 3 tblsp fresh raspberries half cup (60g) Self raising flour tblsp caster sugar 1 tblsp strand sprinkles 3 flat bottomed ice cream cornet cones
Instructions
1. GET AN ADULT to preheat oven to 180C (fan oven)/ 200C/Gas Mark 6 2. Weigh out all your ingredients 3. Break the egg into a cup, then separate the egg by making a claw shape with one hand and pour through the whole egg and catch the yolk. Put the white in to the bowl (save the yolk for another recipe)
By Crafty Chefs 4. Whisk the egg white with a fork to make some bubbles. Add the oil and milk and mix again, then add the vanilla extract. 5. Take 6 raspberries and put them to one side. Add the remaining raspberries to the wet mixture. 6. Put the flour in another mixing bowl, then add the sugar 7. Tip the wet ingredients into the flour bowl and stir the ingredients together with a tablespoon until completely mixed. The mixture will be quite wet. Lastly add the sprinkles until evenly distributed. 8. Put the ice cream cornet cones in a muffin tray or loaf tin so they stand up straight. Add a raspberry to each one then scoop and slide the mixture into the cone using 2 spoons and add one raspberry on the top of each. 9. ASK AN ADULT to place into the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes. 10. Leave to cool, enjoy! Summer 2019

Younger Children will enjoy Milkshake Monkey’s new musical and this will be the most dazzling show they have ever seen! Stadium Tour
Are you looking for the best School holiday fun for the May Half Term? Trent Park Football have amazing Multi Activity Camps of Football, Dodgeball, Foot Pool, Crazy Golf and more while we are going to Arsenal's Emirates Stadium on the Friday. Their fantastic Junior Programme on their enclosed pitches and beautiful Golf course are structured in a fun filled environment designed for all ages and abilities. Indoor Venues
The weather cannot be guaranteed in the UK so we have ideas for indoor venues. Some of our favourite places include N20 and Coffee and Crayons in Finchley as they are child friendly and they also fun workshops and events in the holidays. Fun Junction is an amazing soft play and has an outdoor area too. Flip Out Brent Cross is the UK’s most advanced trampoline arena, trick park and ninja skills centre.
