10 Things

Andrea Dunn Making 1/Fall 2013 Instructors: Assistant Professors Taylor Hokanson & Fo Wilson

10 Things is an assignment designed to shift first-year students

from the realm of left-brain centric judgement into a more balanced relationship between the hand, eye and intellect; to encourage them to work with materials experimentally and to stretch the bounds of their individual imagination, creativity and resoucefulness. For this assignment there are no “right” or “wrong” solutions, only imaginative or unispired ones. Students are encoraged to avoid expected solutions, not to edit the bizarre or unsual and to be adventurous. They can use any combination of materials or techniques as long as their materials are manipulated in some way working within the ten constraints.

1. an object as long as your arm span.

I knotted four shoe laces together to create one long string. When in motion the shoe laces can be used as a jump rope.

2. an object that can hang from the ceiling.

By breaking off the ends of plastic spoons, using a few pipe cleaners, floss, and hot glue, I created an artsy chandelier that can add a stylish touch to any corner of the room.

3. a map

I created a visual word map of important places I’ve been to, vacations I took, and memorable events in my life.

4. a drawing made with found materials.

I dipped different shaped leaves in paint to create an abstract drawing. Then, I used an orange highlighter I found to emphasize certain patterns.

5. something to wear.

For this object, I used packaging material from a box to create a swim floatie.

6. something soft.

I created a cushiony teddy bear by wrapping pieces of a plastic bag around pillow fluff.

7. an object made primarily using negative space.

For this piece, I painted a black silhouette of a tree on the glass of a picture frame. I wanted to display the natural grain of the wood wall.

8. something that looks good on the floor.

Who doesn’t enjoy feeling welcomed when they enter a room? I created a welcome mat with packaging foam and paint.

9. something broken.

By using the handles of broken spoons and a waterbottle cap, I pieced together an abstract sculpture.

10. something put together that has at least 3 parts.

For this object, I braided three cut rubber bands to create a colorful twist.
