JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon, welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another important match against Newport IOW in the Wessex League One. I’d like to wish a warm welcome to everyone associated with the Port including their management team, players, plus the committee and supporters of Newport IOW that have made the long journey to Foxcotte Park today and I hope you all have a safe journey back later on this evening.

Our last home game saw us take on our local rivals Andover Town in front of a massive crowd of 570. We made a great start to the game and created a number of chances that we unfortunately could not finish off.

It was frustrating to go into the half-time break level due to our dominance. The second half saw Town grow into the game, but we still provided a threat and went in front through a great move that saw Cooky strike home.

We had ridden our luck with Town hitting the bar, but that luck ran out with Town equalising with 20 minutes to go and despite our best efforts we could not find a winner and both sides having to settle for a point each.

There is still a long way to go in the promotion race and there will be further twists and turns to go in the last few games of the season. We will continue to take one game at a time and see where it takes us.

Good afternoon and welcome to the players, staff and fans of Newport IOW, here today for an entertaining clash between the two clubs. I hope that everybody has an enjoyable afternoon with us and a safe journey home.

They arrive here on the back of an impressive 8-1 win in midweek over Oakfield in the Isle of Wight Gold Cup, but they did lose 1-0 at 10-man Laverstock & Ford last Saturday. We will of course need to be at our absolute best today if we can maintain our own promotion chase, following our midweek draw with Andover Town.

We have played some terrific football over the past five or so months and achieved so much over that time and have moved back into a strong position for promotion with our hardfought victories over Totton & Eling and Verwood Town and an impressive battling display in the draw with Bemerton over the last few weeks.

The current success of not only the first team but the Swifts and ladies’ sides is not only down to the players on the pitch but the financial support off it. If you’re interested in any sponsorship or would like to discuss any corporate partnerships with the Football Club please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Following our win over New Milton last week, I attended the Ladies semi-final match on the Sunday, where they put in a great battling performance against Eastleigh Reserves and were unfortunate to lose 1-0. Despite this defeat, the team can take a lot of positives from their first full season and along with our Swifts side, been a credit to the club.

To achieve the aim of promotion will depend, however, upon the standard of recent performances being maintained. Today’s match is, of course, a difficult one. Newport will be looking to continue their fine run of form that

With continued activity on and off the pitch at the moment putting the club in the local spotlight we have been inundated with companies interested in becoming sponsors, guests and partners of this fine football club.

We have come through a run of tough games, but we still have further difficult games ahead.

Starting with today’s game and with the likes of Romsey and Downton still to come. It makes for an exciting end to the season. We have finally moved up from 5th position into the top 3 and have a real opportunity to go up this season with a strong squad, that in my opinion, could finish in the top half of the Wessex Premier.

Welcome back to Foxcotte Park for another huge game as we take on Newport IOW in another important game as we continue our pursuit of promotion to the Wessex Premier.

“THE WIN OVER THE LINNETS WAS TOUGH GAME FOR ALL INVOLVED BUT WE MANAGED TO GRIND OUT THE WIN.”

Today’s game comes after our tense victory over New Milton Town last Saturday and then a draw with Andover Town on Tuesday night.

The win over the Linnets was tough game for all involved but we managed to grind out the win thanks to a great header from Cooky. The second half saw New Milton put us under pressure, but we also missed a couple of chances to put the game to bed with Mikey Davis unlucky with a strike against the bar. .

Our recent form is testament to the hard work and ability of the lads and the management of the gaffer’s and their staff. We have a number of players watching from the stands who count themselves unlucky not to be in the starting XI. That is a good problem to have, and I don’t envy the gaffer when he has to pick the starting lineup each week.

We are now into the business end of the season with our final six games of the season.

We are taking each game as it comes and know that we have a lot of tough games, starting with this afternoon with Newport.

The Port come into today’s game on the back of an emphatic win over Oakfield on Tuesday night and will be high on confidence, but we won’t be taking things lightly.

All we need to do is to keep working hard as a group . We’ve got ourselves into a good position – now it’s up to us to push on and keep the pressure on the other sides around us.

I don’t need to tell you to get behind us today really. We know you will, and we’ll do all we can to get another win for you in return.

let's go THE STREET HIT THE ROAD IN A FEW WEEKS TIME WHEN THEY TRAVEL TO FACE ROMSEY TOWN AT THE AEC PROTECTION STADIUM IN THE RE-ARRANGED MIDWEEK FIXTURE

ROMSEY TOWN WHO? Romsey Town, aka the Town, from the AEC Protection Ground, are the Street’s opponents on the 12th of March. Totton lost 51 on Tuesday night against Winchester City in the Southampton Senior Cup, while the Town currently sit 8th place in the league with 50 points and are three points behind 7th place Downton.

HOW THEY DOING? The Town got off to a poor start to the season, with three defeats against Newport (IOW), Bemerton Heath Harlequins and Folland Sports before a winning run of 4 matches for the Town, which started with a 3-2 home win over Fawley. Further wins over Totton & Eling, Laverstock & Ford and Ringwood Town followed before a 3-1 defeat at Verwood ended September. October saw Town start with a 1-0 win over Whitchurch, before a 51 defeat over Andover Town. They bounced back with a 5-1 win over Ash United and then a 3-1 win over East Cowes. The month ended with Whitchurch gaining revenge for their defeat earlier in the month with a 2-0 victory. November started with 2 wins over Petersfield and New Milton Town. A run of 2 defeats came mid-month against the Street (4-2) and Downton (3-1). The Town ended November with a 3-0 home victory over Fleet Spurs. December only saw 3 matches played but the Town remained unbeaten with wins over Millbrook (6-1) and Ringwood Town (10) and an impressive 1-1 home draw with leaders Bemerton Heath. 2022 started off well

for the Town with three wins over Fleet Spurs, Verwood Town and Ash United. A 2-2 home draw with Newport (IOW) ended the month of January.

This month has seen a 2-0 defeat to Folland Sports before a 3-1 win at East Cowes, Oliver Jenkins getting a brace and also Owen Holloway also on target. The Town’s last league match ended in a 3-2 home defeat to Laverstock.

HOW TO GET THERE? The AEC Protection

Stadium is 39 minutes or 21 miles away from Foxcotte Park. From Andover take the A3057 towards Stockbridge. Continue along the A3057 through Stockbridge and Kings Somborne and all the way to Romsey. At the turn left onto The Hundred/B3398. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Bypass Rd/A27/A3090. The ground is on the left.

HAVE WE BEEN THERE BEFORE? Yes,

our last match at the AEC Protection Stadium came in August 2017 in the Wessex League One and saw the Street lose 4-2 thanks to goals from Tom Ashton, Luis Morais and a brace from Daniel Fox. This came after Zach Hine gave the Street the lead after 34 minutes and Zach Neve got a consolation in the 70th minute. Since that defeat the Street won the return game in December 2017 with a 3-2 score line. The two sides then met in the FA Cup the following season, the Street triumphing 4-0. The two sides then met in the league in November 2019 with Street winning 5-1 but the season ended early before the return game could be played. Romsey then recorded a 2-0 win here in November 2020.

It gives us great pleasure to welcome everyone associated with New Milton Town Football Club to Foxcotte Park this afternoon.

The Port make their journey to our corner of Hampshire for the first time as our previous encounters have all taken place on the Isle of Wight. The Port won our last encounter in early December 2021 with a 2-1 win with Connor Kelly scoring twice and Luke Hooper replying with a fine free kick. The Street won their other trips to the island, a 2-0 win in September 2020 and a 3-2 victory in November 2019, thanks to a 90+1-minute winner from Ilyas Warshow.

This afternoon’s match promises to be an entertaining and also nail-biting game with both sides desperate to pick up the three points to continue their promotion push. The Street are 2 points better off than the Port with a game in hand and the Port also have to face Andover Town in a couple of weeks’ time in another promotion battle.

Newport got off to the perfect start, winning their opening four league matches. Their first defeat came with a 2-0 away defeat at Downton.

Further victories over East Cowes, Verwood Town and New Milton followed but then a 5-2 defeat to Millbrook ended September.

October started with an entertaining 4-4 draw at New Milton Town before victories over Millbrook, Fawley and Ash United with the Port ending the month unbeaten.

Andover Town ended that run with a 3-2 victory at the Portway Stadium, but the Port bounced back with a 4-1 win over fellow promotion hopefuls Folland Sports. A 3-1 win over Ringwood was then cancelled out with a defeat to Bemerton Heath by the same score line.

December saw a 2-1 win over the Street and a 2-2 draw at Whitchurch before the year ended with a narrow 1-0 victory over Petersfield Town.

The Port started 2022 with huge wins over Downton, Verwood and East Cowes. A 2-2 draw at Romsey ended January. Wins over Ringwood and Fawley with a point taken at Folland Sports came in February but a 1-0 defeat at Bemerton Heath ended the month.

Further wins over lowly Totton & Eling and Fleet Spurs started March but last Saturday’s defeat to Laverstock & Ford and other results has led to the Port being in 5th place coming into this afternoon’s encounter.

► MIDFIELDERS JACOB REYNOLDS. – Young midfield player who has come through the ranks at Newport before departing for First Team experience at East Cowes Vics. Returned halfway through the 2018/19 season as a more confident and vocal player.

CONNOR KELLY. – Attacking midfielder /winger who likes to get forward and score. Came through Newport Youth into the first team and made immediate impact. Has had spells at Sholing and Horndean but enjoys being at the Port. Likes to run at defenders and scores plenty of goals.

AARON BURFORD. – Strong dependable midfielder who can stuff out opposition attacks and create opportunities for his own strikers.

Previous clubs include Brading Town and Cowes Sports. Can unleash a vicious shot if in sight of goal. ► STRIKERS JORDAN BROWNE. – Experienced striker back at the club for a second spell after a season at East Cowes Vics where played more of a midfield role. Has played for Cowes Sports previously after coming through Newport Youth teams. Regular goal scorer and a cool finisher in the box both with his feet and head.

JOE CRAIG. – Returned to the Port after coming through the club’s Youth system. Has played for East Cowes Vics in the Wessex League. Tall with good control, he will be looking to establish himself this season.

JOE BUTCHER. – Prolific all over the park and hungry in front of goal. A true all-rounder having played previously with the Port a few years ago and more recently at Vics.

JARED COUSINS. – Pacey striker who signed for The Port in November 2018 having come from local rivals Cowes Sports. Settled in quickly and has impressed in every performance.

THE CLUB The modern Newport IOW Football Club, with its well-appointed St George's Park facilities, (which the club officially vacated at the end of the 2018/19 season), presented a different picture from that conjured up by the club’s origins on January 27th 1888. The actual date of formation can be established from the original minute book, which is still in the club's possession. At that time, over 130 years ago, Newport played on a piece of land known as Well’s Field, which later became known as Church Litten.

In 1986, Newport became founder members of the Wessex League, finishing a creditable fourth place in that debut season. In the 1989/90 season Newport were promoted to the Southern League. The 2000/01 season saw them win the Dr Martens League Eastern Division Championship. However, they found the topflight too much and returned the Eastern Division after just one season.

The 2006/07 season saw a return to the more familiar Southern League, playing in the South and West division. The club was relegated back to the Wessex league at the end of the 2007–08 season after finishing bottom of Division One South and West of the Southern league. The club then remained in the Wessex League Premier Division but went on to win the Russell Cotes Cup in 2010-11.

NEWPORT – THE AREA There are signs of Roman settlement in the area, which was probably known as Medina.

They include two known Roman villas, one of which, Newport Roman Villa, has been excavated and opened to the public.

Information on the area resumes after the Norman Conquest. The first charter was granted in the late 12th century. In 1377 an invading French force burnt down much of the town while attempting to take Carisbrooke Castle, then under the command of Sir Hugh Tyrill. A group of Frenchmen were captured and killed, then buried in a tumulus later nicknamed Noddies Hill, a "noddy" being medieval slang for a body.

This was later corrupted to Nodehill, the present name for a part of central Newport – a name that seems inappropriate, as the area is flat.

WHAT’S THE STORY? First against third as the “Business End” of the season begins to take shape, two committed sides, an attendance well in excess of two hundred and an enjoyable if at times scrappy ninety minutes, though the wind played a large part in that, and in the end all square and a point apiece.

The first attempt on goal fell for Andover New Street with a free kick from Reece Rusher, after he had been fouled on the corner of the area, being well saved by keeper Paddy Creese under heavy pressure.

At the other end Ronan Clancy seemed to get the ball under his feet when well-placed and the chance was lost before Creese came for a corner he appeared to have little chance of reaching and Shane Lock’s snapshot from the loose ball was acrobatically blocked by a defender. Harry Beckley, whose pace was a threat to the home defence all afternoon, found space on the right but fired into the side netting and with the game switching from end-to-end Chris Flood was inches wide of the far post and saw another effort well saved by Creese after Joe Wright and Lock had created the opening. The half ended with another excellent save from Creese, tipping a thunderbolt from Liam Hibberd over the bar after a corner had only been partially cleared.

With time running out Street came closest to breaking the deadlock when Joe Wright clipped the far post and a Rusher effort was held by Creese and five nervous, for both sides, extra minutes could not alter the score line.

WHAT’S THE STORY? Street moved back into third place in the table, after grinding out a narrow 1-0 victory over New Milton Town last Saturday.

Reece Rusher was halted in full flow by a well-timed tackle by Elliot Lines and two corners came to nothing before the dangerous Tyrell Sampson took play to the other end with a surging run.

MOMENTS

Rusher broke clear again and was halted by onrushing keeper Luke Dennison with the ball rebounding off his arm, but the referee was saved a difficult decision by a late offside flag. The visitors came close to breaking the deadlock in a furious goalmouth scramble during which the ball was cleared off the line and also struck the post, but it was the home side that did open the scoring five minutes before the break.

Awarded a free kick on the left touchline, Rusher swung in the perfect cross and Ross Cook’s header flew into the top corner of the net. Perhaps slightly against the run of play but a picture goal in all respects.

Both sides made a bright start to the second half with Sampson cutting in from the left and striking the far post and Rusher seeing a shot parried by Dennison after collecting a long cross-field ball from Joe Wright. Another Sampson run won a corner and Street replaced Mike Gosney with Mikey Davis. The substitute’s first action was to win and take a corner on the left that was cleared to the edge of the box and met first time by Liam Hibberd with a shot that Dennison saw late and did well to parry.

Cook was too high at full stretch and though the visitors were enjoying more of the possession, the home side looked the more dangerous. Max Allen replaced Chris Flood and immediately cleverly turned a Shane Lock through ball into Davis’s path and his curling shot rebounded off the crossbar to safety with the goalkeeper no more than a bystander.

Dennison bravely dived on a loose ball in a crowded six-yard box and a New Milton cross fizzed across the area with nobody able to get a touch before Hibberd queried a decision and was sentenced to ten minutes in the sin bin – with fourteen minutes left on the clock.

Street were running down the time now and another low cross came to nothing before Dennison was at full stretch to deny Cook, and the game ended on a strange note when Davis pulled the ball back from the by-line and Lock was adjudged to be offside.

The Street got off to a bright start in the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 home victory over Alton, who had just been relegated the previous season from the Wessex Premier.

This was followed up with a narrow 1-0 win against Fawley with Zach Neve popping up in the last minute to make it 2 wins out of 2. The winning run however was brought to a halt with a 1-0 home defeat to Downton. With the Street doing everything but scoring and then conceding a late penalty, which was converted by player manager Ben Smith.

Further wins against Verwood Town and an impressive 3-2 victory at US Portsmouth were undone by heavy defeats at Romsey and Christchurch. By the end of September the Street were just 1 point off top spot and were in 5th place. East Cowes were the next visitors and were second from bottom in 18th position with just 2 points out of 6 games.

East Cowes continued to show some fight and netted their second of the match through their top scorer Jordan Browne.

Yates netted his second of the game on 84 minutes and four minutes later substitute Nic Turpin put in number six to complete the scoring. The victory would keep the Street in 5th place and how little did we know that they would go on to achieve promotion to the Wessex Premier for the first time in the club’s history.

The home side took just fifteen minutes to take the lead as Lock netted the opener. East Cowes however then came back into the game and equalised before half time after missing several clear chances.

Hamworthy United boss Tim Sills is now allowing talk of his team’s Wembley dream becoming a reality, as they moved just one game away from the FA Vase final.

In front of a bumper crowd of 741 at the County Ground on Saturday, Sills admitted he thought his side’s chances of progression to the semi-finals of the competition may have gone, after quarter-final opponents Southall netted the opener with five minutes remaining.

Joe Briggs had the honour of becoming the last Moneyfields player to score for the club on the grass pitch at Dover Road.

He grabbed the second in a routine 3-0 victory over Wessex League Premier Division strugglers Amesbury - the final goal deflected in off a visiting player.

It was the final game at the ground before its multi-millionpound transformation into the John Jenkins Stadium complete with two artificial pitches and a host of other facilities.

‘It was very comfortable,’ said Money’s boss Glenn Turnbull.

‘They had an effort early on due to a mix up but after that I don’t think they created anything.

‘If it had been double the score line I don’t think anyone could have complained.

Fortune not with Fareham Town as they suffer third defeat to Alresford this season Pete Stiles was left scratching his head following Fareham Town's 2-1 Wessex League Premier Division defeat to Alresford at Cams Alders.

The Reds boss stressed his men should have taken six points from their previous two encounters - games against Alresford and Hamble on their own patch - but instead were beaten in both matches.

Against Alresford, Archie Willcox had clawed his side level after the visitors' early opener, but Kristian Andonov was on hand to complete his double to secure all three points for the travellers with his second-half effort.

Stiles said: ‘How we didn't win that game I'll never know. We've camped in their half second half - they even admitted they got away with it.

THE IMPENETRABLE LIONS OF ROME

Some football moments zip by in a flash and others seem to make time stand still. When Glenn Hoddle's England played Italy in Rome in their final FIFA World Cup 1998 qualifier they provided both in quick succession right at the bitter end.

Needing only a draw to qualify, David Seaman got England moving after gathering Christian Vieri's attempted bicycle kick and his Arsenal team-mate Ian Wright skipped past Italian goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi to bear down on an empty net. It was too acute an angle for Wright and his shot struck the post despite a nation willing it into the net.

Teddy Sheringham couldn't find a finish in the aftermath and Italy played a long pass of their own.

Alessandro del Piero clipped in a precise cross for Vieri, who may as well have not moved from the spot from which his original effort had taken place. With time running out it all came down to Vieri against Seaman.

The Italian met the cross full and true as we watched, almost able to track the spin of the ball in agonising slow-motion as it arced towards the corner of Seaman's net.

We waited, and waited, and waited. But the bulge in the net never came. Vieri had headed wide; England were through.

Hoddle first took to his desk at Lancaster Gate with England on the crest of a wave after UEFA Euro '96, and throughout qualifying for France '98 Wembley was the place to be. It was a vibrant and exciting venue, packed with enthusiastic and noisy school groups and hardened England fans alike, all watching one of England's best ever overlooked teams. And it was the dual with Italy that really etched the 1997 England team into the history books.

After Gianfranco Zola's goal had beaten them at Wembley, Ian Wright and Paul Scholes scored the first two goals conceded by Italy under Cesare Maldini at Le Tournoi.

By kick-off time in Rome in October it was hoped that England wouldn't require another. The remaining results left Hoddle's team in the driving seat but there was still plenty of room for traditional English pessimism, for the job was not quite finished. Italy had kept Alan Shearer at bay at Wembley and had frightening firepower of their own.

Italy's line-up on October 11th 1997 was fearsome and England needed to thwart them in order to guarantee their place in the World Cup the following summer. Without the injured Shearer, Hoddle played Wright up front with Sheringham. David Beckham and Paul Gascoigne were anchored in midfield by Paul Ince and David Batty, both of whom were pivotal in Hoddle's game plan. In the build-up, the former Chelsea boss (helped with translation on this trip by future England manager Roy Hodgson) had talked to his players about deploying an Italian game against the Italians, aiming to frustrate the post-Catenaccio Azzurri with a strategy based primarily on maintaining possession and limiting the opposition's chances.

England's performance was disciplined and Hoddle's approach was executed almost to perfection. The first half was as composed a 45minute spell as one could hope to see from England.

Italy's opportunities were kept to an absolute minimum, with Batty and Ince -- who famously finished the match in a head bandage -- wonderfully marshalling Italy's midfield playmakers while Gareth Southgate, Tony Adams, Sol Campbell and Graeme Le Saux happily tidied up any loose ends behind them.

Seaman had little to do. In fact, it was Peruzzi who had to be on his guard when Beckham's diagonal pass to the edge of the area allowed Sheringham to tower above Angelo Di Livio and set up Ince, who arrived at the perfect moment but could only direct his volley straight at the Juventus goalkeeper.

Beckham himself soon came close to opening the scoring, sweeping the ball over from 18 yards after playing a delightful, lengthened one-two with Sheringham.

The second half was a scruffier affair, but England kept their heads. Hearts were in English mouths with 17 minutes left on the clock when substitute Del Piero, replacing Zola in his last Italy match, appeared to be upended by Adams just inside Seaman's penalty area. Referee Mario van der Ende was prompted into action not to point to the penalty spot, but to caution the legendary Juventus forward for diving. It was a marginal decision and England had escaped a nervous moment that could easily have gone the other way.

Del Piero was in the thick of the action again three minutes later. Producing his trademark trickery on the left wing, he foxed Campbell more than once before the England defender was able to stand his ground while the Italian over-elaborated and surrendered possession. Campbell didn't have the ball for long, however. As he scoped out his options, Di Livio came flying in to plant a vicious and unnecessary lunge on the Spurs man. Van der Ende didn't hesitate, showing the yellow card to Di Livio for the second time and reducing the home side to ten men. They continued to press regardless. England remained equal to the challenge.

The match careered towards its dramatic conclusion, which began and ended at England's goalline but left it mercifully unbreeched. England were through and the Lions of Rome returned home as heroes.

It's difficult for a goalless draw to echo down the ages but this one came close thanks to England's unravelling in the decade that followed. David Baddiel and Frank Skinner reprised 'Three Lions' with the Lightning Seeds, Rome its renewed focal point.

And as Hoddle, his staff and his substitutes poured off the bench onto the field to join the players' celebrations, there was a real sense that this was England's moment. They'd limited Italy on their own pitch in spite of enormous pressure and world class opposition, and there was no suggestion whatsoever that they hadn't deserved it.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. It can turn World Cup Italia '90 heartbreak into an historical zenith, a sacred memory one can only dream of matching. And for all the talk of a supposed Golden Generation of English players who began to make their mark after France '98, the team that secured England's qualification in superb style was a far more capable, much more effective outfit.

NON-LEAGUE CELEBRATIONS

LAST WEEK, we at NLP Towers received an email from the father of an 11-year-old football enthusiast who has found a passion for NonLeague. Young Jack Arnfield had just come back from watching his local team, Stalybridge Celtic take on Northern Premier rivals Workington and had written a report on his visit for us to browse.

On reading it, it struck us straight away that enticing the likes of Jack to football at this level is the exact reason that James Doe suggested the idea of a Non-League Day back in 2010.

So, with Non-League Day returning after a twoyear Covid absence this weekend, what better way to do our bit than to put Jack’s account into the print, making the young man’s day at the same time.

“One of the beauties of Non-League football is that you can hear [witty] conversations all over the ground with rival fans sat so close to each other and no need for away sections,” Jack wrote.

“It is sad that 73,000 people chose to go to Old Trafford but only 400 decided to visit Bower Fold last Saturday.

“Only 11 miles separate the two grounds and I wish more people would get down and support teams like Stalybridge Celtic rather than go to Premier League games or worse just watch them on TV.

“When you buy a programme or a drink it's helping that club to survive, it's not going to some mega-rich person in another country.

“All the volunteers that keep clubs running at lower levels deserve our support so get to your local non-league ground on Saturday!”

We couldn’t put it better ourselves, Jack!

Once again, clubs have been pulling out all the stops in support of Non-League Day, while their big brothers from the Premier League and Championship take the weekend off due to the international break.

Ticket offers and often bizarre incentives – free mushrooms at Bungay FC being my particular favourite – are employed to bring in the punters and the results in previous years have shown to reap rewards with clubs often announcing record crowds.

This year is no different with various offers and special events taking place up and down the country. Harrow Borough, for example, have dished out free tickets for their Isthmian Premier Division visit of Bowers & Pitsea to several local schools, and offered half-price entry for Premier League and EFL season ticket holders, as well as those attending the England v Switzerland game just down the road at Wembley later in the day.

It’s free also for Under16s and to NHS and Emergency Service workers and the Armed Forces. The majority of supporters reading this will have already caught the Non-League bug but you too can play your part.

By just bringing one friend, work colleague or member of the family you are spreading the word and helping your local football club to become a vital cog in the community wheel.

league look In the Premier Division the top match was at the Sunseeker International County Ground where Hamworthy United retained their five-point lead at the top of the table with a 2-1 defeat of Horndean.

All the goals came in the second half with Lee Francis and Cameron Munn on target for the hosts and Brandon Miller getting a late consolation for the visitors. The Deans have hit a bad patch and this defeat, their third in as many games, drops them to fifth place in the table.

Shaftesbury remain in second place after a 4-0 win at US Portsmouth with a double from Greg Peel and strikes from Asa Phillips and Luke Burbidge while Bashley and Brockenhurst changed places. Bashley were held to a one all draw by AFC Stoneham – Adam Grange and Mat Bainbridge respectively – while the Badgers came out on top by the odd goal in three against Fareham. Mitch Speechley-Price and Ben Dukes with the home goals and Casey Bartlett-Scott for the visitors.

The Friday evening clash between AFC Portchester and Moneyfields finished all square at one apiece – Lee Wort and Josh Hazell – but as expected drew a healthy attendance of 447. Portland recorded their second away win in five days with a 2-0 success at Hamble Club, Matt Burrows and Greg Borthwick scoring either side of the break, while Baffins Milton Rovers showed their old form with a 3-0 win at Blackfield & Langley with Jason Parish, Rudi Blankson and James Cowan on the scoresheet.

Bournemouth continued their current run of results in securing a two all draw at Alton, goals from Pat McKay and Marcus Cullen cancelling out efforts from Rob Carr and Oli Graham. At the bottom of the table, with Amesbury not playing, Christchurch shared the points at Cowes in a one all draw with the goals credited to Jez Conway and Luke Chalwell while Hythe & Dibden continued their revival with a 2-1 win at Alresford Town, their third win in a row. Filippos Terzidis and Cairo Burton scored the goals – Kristian Andonov replying for the hosts - and they may be too far behind but they are certainly giving it a go at this late stage of the season.

In Division One the Bemerton Heath bandwagon rolled on but there were defeats for two of their main challengers. Bemerton won 4-1 at Whitchurch with a hat trick from Justin Bennett and a single from Harry Beckley – Dec Shuttleworth with the home goal – and regained the number one place from Follands who went

down 1-0 at Fawley, Dec Hartigan scoring the allimportant goal for the Oilers.

Newport lost by the same score at Laverstock & Ford, who played over half the game with ten men and for whom Chae Sykes was on target, and both the Andover sides picked up three points.

A Ross Cook header just before half time gave New Street the points against New Milton in a game marred by a very strong wind while a mile or so up the road Andover Town defeated Romsey Town 2-0 thanks to Adam Pattison and Ryan Griffiths. Downton maintained their interest with a 4-0 win at Millbrook, the goals coming in the second half from Sam Howe with two, Ollie Davies and Robbie Owen while Ringwood bounced back from a 6-0 defeat in midweek with three points, Harry Smith scoring the only goal of the game at Petersfield.

An important game at the bottom saw Fleet Spurs gain a valuable 3-1 win over East Cowes Vics at Kennels Lane with the goals coming from Jack Wilson, Jonny Miller and Tom White. Harrison Yates scored for Vics who, along with Fawley and perhaps Ash United, may now be looking over their shoulders.

No relief however for Totton & Eling who went down 4-0 at home to Verwood for whom Joe Freak scored twice to go with goals from Jake Carswell and Matt Vining. The Millers are now some 14 points from safety and things are looking grim for a long-established Wessex League Club.

Football’s unsustainable finances continue to be affected by external affairs and suboptimal practices, the latest hurdle will doubtless emerge from the war in Ukraine, although the full economic impact of the conflict is still a long way from being known.

However, even before the pandemic and the behaviour of Vladimir Putin, football’s business model was being exposed on a daily basis and covid-19 merely provided the final straw for some clubs. According to Fair Game, the organisation promoting sustainability, integrity and community orientation, 44 of the 85 clubs that filed financial returns for 2019-20 were technically insolvent. These included Premier League clubs West Ham, Brighton, Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Wolves, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United. The most “technically insolvent” club in the Fair Game list is Stoke City with a negative figure of £154.4 million.

At the opposite end of the table, the balance sheet equity figures of the big and powerful dwarf the majority of the 92 clubs.

Manchester City, for example, had balance sheet equity of £ 631 million, while Chelsea (£511m), Arsenal (£345m), Tottenham (£340m) and Liverpool (£ 208m) were the only others with figures in excess of £ 100 million.

Technical solvency is calculated by taking all the club’s assets (including stadium, training ground and players) and subtracting the liabilities (including debt). If liabilities outweigh assets, the club can be categorised as technically insolvent.

Niall Couper, CEO of Fair Game, said in a press release: “These pre-pandemic figures should be a huge alarm bell to anyone interested in football.

Most clubs only exist because of a wealthy benefactor. Which leads the obvious question: What happens if they walk away?”

The football world will soon see what happens when one of the most generous benefactors, Roman Abramovich, leaves Chelsea, and how the new owners of the club eventually run the business. Here we have an example of a club that has enjoyed huge

levels of backing suddenly without the man who has funded unprecedented success.

The Premier League clubs, generally, have a high degree of solvency which is boosted by TV revenues, amounting to almost £ 2.5 billion in 2020. Couper added: “The problem is that the vast majority of that sum stays in the Premier League and this has created a dangerous culture. Clubs are gambling their very own existence to chase the siren call of the Premier League, with Derby County the latest example.” The Championship, of which Derby have been members for 14 seasons, is renowned for overspending, primarily on players wages.

For example, in 2019-20, the wage-toincome ratio in the division rose to 120%, up from 107%.

TV revenue distribution needs to be examined closely, for only 1.2% of the total is distributed to clubs below the top two tiers, while 12% goes towards parachute payments for relegated clubs from the Premier. A fairer method would ensure the whole of League One and Two attain technical solvency. Couper says: “There is so much money in football, yet there is no holistic view on how to use it to benefit the game overall.”

Fair Game is calling for an independent regulator, a key element of the recent government study on football, but also considers a sustainability index a priority built around four criteria: financial substainability, good governance, equality standards and community and fan engagement. Perhaps there is a need for a credit rating agency of a sort to monitor the financial health of clubs on a real time basis?

Although the past two years have seen football struggle against a difficult backdrop, the fact so many clubs have announced financial distress should concern everyone. The geopolitics, the pandemic, the global economy and the UK’s departure from the European Union have all contributed to the current situation. And with the immediate horizon looking very depressing and uncertain, we can only assume more clubs will stare into the abyss at some stage. We have been warned.
