INTERVIEW

Get to know German designer Martin Hirth, the established name behind this season’s new addition, the Phira lamp. The lamp was born from shadow play, balanced materials, and a spark of Italian mid-century style. Martin turns simplicity into statement. Known for clean lines and playful precision. The result? Quiet design that speaks volumes.
Where does your passion for design come from? My passion for design developed quite early and intuitively Growing up, was always drawn to technical constructions and aesthetics Later, during my studies in product design, this intuitive curiosity turned into a conscious pursuit of creating objects that combine function and emotion
Are there any specific artists or movements that influence your style? Of course I get inspired by old masters of design like Achille Castiglioni, Charlotte Perriand, Gerrit Rietveld and Jean Royère So the Bauhaus and Modernism is also strongly influencing me
Are there museums you draw
What inspires your work as a designer? Inspiration often comes from simple everyday objects and vintage finds, as well through museum and gallery visits I’m fascinated by simplicity and clarity, and I try to create designs that feel both calm and meaningful, yet surprising in detail
inspiration from? If so, which one is your all-time favourite? Too many, and too many too different ones But I like beside art museums, places with a artful presentation of natural or archaeological science objects
Can you describe your work process? My process usually starts with a clear question: what purpose should the object serve, and how can it feel natural and lasting in its environment? I often sketch by hand first, then move quickly into physical models or 3D drafts From there, it’s a

matter of refining proportions and materials until it feels just right Visually and in use
We really love the design of the Phira lamp. How did you come to this idea? Thank you! The Phira lamp was born from a fascination with geometric balance, sculptural forms and the great combination of material I wanted to design a lighting object that’s present in the room even when switched off — like a quiet sculpture that plays with light and shadow through its form
What challenges do you typically face in your work, and how do you overcome them? Balancing artistic freedom with technical constraints is a recurring

challenge Also, translating a pure idea into a product that’s manufacturable and affordable without compromising its essence Patience, iteration, and close collaboration with manufacturers are key to solving that What restaurant is your all-time favourite and would be on your wish list to showcase your designs?
Oh, there are also so many I couldn’t possibly choose just one But it would definitely have to be a place that feels naturally in asthetik A restaurant where the interior, the cooking style, and the atmosphere all reflect a true sense of character and honesty, that’s where I’d love to see my designs
What triggered you to team up with &k Amsterdam?
First, the start to team up was a great personal contact to the heads behind the company But I was drawn to &k's playful yet well-considered approach to objects Their way of combining artistic expression with accessibility felt like a great match Our collaboration is rooted in shared curiosity and a joy in bringing design into everyday life
What do you think makes

INTERVIEW
the connection between &k Amsterdam and your own? I think we both value the emotional side of design The way objects can spark joy or inspire reflection There’s also a shared love of clear forms with a twist, whether it's a material, a detail, or a story behind the object It’s a collaboration that allows both open creativity and coherence

A good design stays good. Functional, timeless and high-quality – and certainly never boring. That’s why our unique designs always have a typical &klevering flair: cool, colourful and quirky. We hold on to that vision as we create every collection. From the first sketch to the final touch, we are as committed to each new collection as we were to all the previous ones. It takes real teamwork, because we can only stay original – and preserve our DNA – if we work together. We believe that with our whole hearts.
