Andipa Gallery is delighted to present a solo exhibition I Made This, Sorry It’s Rubbish by British artist Alma Singer. Curated by The Connor Brothers, the exhibition explores issues around value, identity, relationships, and The Art Market, all with a self-deprecating humour that pokes fun at some of the things we all take more seriously than we should. The works combine images and text and are created in a purposely naive style which Alma describes as ‘rubbish’, and which is on occasion is in contrast to the underlying subject matter. In Completely Normal Sized Penis, for example, she playfully questions the motives behind our search for status by way of purchasing and owning luxury objects. Another work, Masterpiece, based on Damien Hirst’s infamous Spot Painting series, raises light-hearted questions about value and meaning in Contemporary Art. Taking in isolation the paintings are fun and irreverent, but as a body of work consistent themes begin to arise which subtly ask more seriousquestionsofus.

Alma Singer is the working name for Kent-based artist Carla Nizzola. Carla’s playfully thought provoking work explores issues around value, art, identity, and female sexuality. Working under a pseudonym allows Carla to overcome the insecurities that come with exhibiting her work, and presents herwiththeopportunitytorevealaspectsofherselfthatareoftenhiddenfromview.
Andipa Gallery has had a friendship with Mike Snelle and James Golding for over twenty years, long before the duo invented The Connor Brothers and went on to become to become recognisable Art World figures. We are pleased to be collaborating with them on an Andipa Gallery takeover with a seriesofcuratedexhibitionsbyartiststheylove, collectandadmire.
“Once in a generation an artist arrives on the scene who challenges our deepest held beliefs, pushes the boundaries of our understanding of what art can be, and immediately cements their place in the canon of Art History. Alma Singer is not that artist. She is however, one of our very favourite artists, and her work always makes us smile, and reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously. We’re huge fans and collectors of Alma’s and are grateful to Andipa Gallery for letting us introduce her to a wider audience.”

“I’m excited that my first London solo exhibition is with Andipa Gallery who I’ve long followed and admired. They been generous enough to give me a show even though the work is a bit rubbish.”
