Key Information Mission
The LLI Travel Club
The Lifelong Learning Institute at Anderson University (LLI) is an organization which presents both academic and leisure activities to interest and inform its members. Through opportunities to share learning and to socialize in a school environment without grades or tests, LLU supports mature learners in their quest for knowledge and seeks programs to interest those in our community. LLI maintains a positive, well-rounded partnership with Anderson University.
The Travel Club functions under the umbrella of the Lifelong Learning Institute at Anderson University. If travel is a learning experience for you, join the Travel Club that meets on the first Thursday of the month at 1:00 pm at the Anderson County Library. Annual club dues are $10.00, and new members may join at any time and on meeting dates. The fall Travel Club meeting dates are as follows: Sept. 4, Oct. 2, Nov. 6, and Dec. 4. Members receive postal reminders before each meeting. Programs focus on travels and topics of interest. In addition, agencies present upcoming travel opportunities at each meeting.

Anderson School Districts have approved a number of the LLI courses for teacher recertification. In order to enroll in these courses, teachers must first become members of LLI ($30). Most courses are $20. Courses for recertification hours are noted in the course listings and are offered at times convenient for teachers. After participating in district-approved courses, teachers receive a certificate for credit hours earned. (Teachers in districts 1 and 2 should contact their district office before enrolling.)
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY LLI follows the Anderson University inclement weather policy. When AU is closed due to inclement weather, all LLI classes are canceled and may be rescheduled by the instructor and participants.
CAMPUS PARKING Our Campus Safety Office requires that LLI members display a parking permit on their dashboard while on campus. After registering, a campus map, parking permit,registration confirmation, and membership card will be mailed to you. LLI members should park in white spaces reserved for Anderson University students.

Courses The Lifelong Learning Institute at Anderson University Board requests persons who have strong interest in areas to submit to the director a Course Proposal (found on our website). The LLI programs are determined for the most part by members’ interests and suggestions, so take time to submit a proposal today! Our volunteer presenters represent a host of interests, including music, history, the arts, government, nature, religion, business, entertainment, physical activities, and hobbies. As they share their passion for these topics, they encourage dialogue and opportunities for participants to discuss ideas and build friendships.
Governance and Management LLI at Anderson University is planned, organized, and governed by a volunteer Executive Board, and the director works closely with the board to market the program, schedule interesting courses and events, and provide support to members and presenters.

Photography Basics for Fun and Excellence

Attendees learn about all aspects of financial planning. These topics include personal budgeting, investing, retirement planning, insurance, Social Security/ Medicare, and estate planning. All attendees get a course workbook to guide them and help them plan for the future. At the conclusion of the course, all attendees may receive a complimentary, personalized financial plan developed by the instructor, a Certified Financial Planner. This allows attendees to begin implementing what they learned in the course on an individual basis and adds value that they can carry forward with them. Attendees are not obligated to come to the personal consultation. (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.) Spencer Metcalfe, a South Carolina native, comes from a family of financial advisors. He began his career in the financial planning and investment management business in 2006. Previously, he received a BS from USC Upstate and earned an MBA, with a concentration in Finance, through Strayer University. In 2011 he received a Certificate in Financial Planning from Florida State University and not long after received his CFP® certification from the CFP Board. Learn the basics of sailing, a lifelong sport which knows no gender or age boundaries. Master the basic theory of how a sailboat works and how you safely and skillfully operate it. Then put your skills into practice at Western Carolina Sail Club on Lake Hartwell. This program utilizes both classroom and on-the-water instruction by a US Sailing certified small boat instructor. Participants must provide their own life jackets, Coast Guard approved Type III. The textbook, Start Sailing Right, may be purchased for $15 at the first class. Minimum #: 4; Maximum #: 8. Ron Moede began sailing in Wisconsin at 16 years of age and has continued his passion for sailing. His interests include teaching Industrial Technology, photography, and sailing at Wren High School. If you’ve taken our first class or know the basics of sailing, this class is for YOU. Develop proficiency with tacking, jibing, knots and navigation. Improve and transfer your skill to larger boats. This course consists of classroom and on-thewater instruction, demonstration and practice at Western Carolina Sailing Club. The instructor, Ron Moede, is a Coast Guard licensed captain and a US Sailing certified instructor. Participants must have their own life jackets, Coast Guard approved Type III. Instructional materials may be purchased for $15 at the first class. Maximum #: 4. Class 1. Introduction. Getting to know your camera can often be like driving a car you have never seen before. We will learn to transfer images, create folders, and organize the images we make. Class 2. Photography, by definition, “is painting with light.” We will discuss basics about the camera, composition techniques, and visual aspects involving light (natural and artificial), contrast, as well as color and black and white. Class discussion will prepare you to take photographs for class 3 discussion. Class 3. Photo editing. Bring in at least 20 images from your digital camera for discussion. We will talk about fine-tuning what we shot through editing and digital processing and also discuss ways to use images we have created, both personal and commercial. Class 4. Photo commencement. Applying what we have learned, we will find inspiration from other photographers, taking the good parts of images we like and looking for our own style. (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.) Suggested Cameras: A digital camera with detachable lens will likely have more options. A camera with manual options (i.e. f-stop lens option, shutter speed options), a basic set up by Canon or Nikon with one lens may cost around $300 and up or other brands. A computer laptop with USB port and ability to view images and a digital card reader (often found for $20 from any box store) may be helpful but not required, too. Ken Ruinard, a staff photographer at the Anderson Independent Mail, a newspaper of the Scripps Company, since 1988, learned about photography in his desire to be

an artist in Palo Alto, California. His work has been published in several national publications, and he has been honored by South Carolina press organizations and National Press Photographers Association contests: 2004 SC Photographer of the Year, two Pulitzer nominations, and several year-end top-10 finishes in the monthly Southeast region NPPA photo contest. He covers local events and travels for major sports and news events with local ties.
Quilting: A Revived Art
Session One: You will study the basics of quilting, view quilts, discuss hand and machine piecing, fabric types, and determine your quilting choices. Sessions 2-4: You will cut and piece together your choice of a variety of cotton fabrics. For this class, participants may choose to quilt a table runner to perfect the techniques. Fabric SUPPLIES: Available for purchase at session one ($18.00). Participants who have a sewing machine are asked to bring them to sessions two through four. Two sewing machines will be available for use. Other supplies (ruler, rotary cutter, and mat may also be purchased from the presenters) and will be discussed in session one. (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.)

Brenda Gray and Fannie Wengerd join together as quilters who have a combination of 50 years of quilting. Brenda learned to quilt from a lady in the community and has a passion for quilting gleaned from her grandmother. Fannie learned to quilt from her mother as a child; her mother made a quilt for each child as a wedding gift.

This class is designed (a) to cover basic information that all computer users should know and (b) to answer any questions that class members may have about their personal computer use and needs. The four sessions will cover (1) hardware (physical equipment – computers, printers, wireless routers); (2) commonly used software (word processing, the Internet, email, related tasks); (3) security measures (antivirus, malware, safe uses); and (4) basic troubleshooting of problems. Each session will include Q & A time and/or practice time. Each class member will have access to a computer during the class. (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.) Doug Davison, a graduate of AC [now AU], taught English here for 15 years before moving to the IT Department. He retired from AU in 2011, after being employed for 33 years. He continues to help people with computers part-time. His hobbies include reading, spending time with two grandchildren, woodworking, and flying. If you remember or have heard of the big bands led by names like Goodman, Shaw, Ellington, Miller, Dorsey… If you know of vocalists like Holiday, Sinatra, Lee, Fitzgerald… and even if you don’t but want to know about the fuss in music back in the good old days… or if you just want to sit back and listen to some great sounds and hear facts about people who made those sounds and defined the word, “swing,”… Join us as we journey through the Big Band Era. (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.) Dr. Ardy Armen graduated from Cornell University and received his PhD in chemistry at UCLA. He held research and management positions in California; Williamsburg, Virginia; Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Enka, NC; and in Anderson, SC. After 40 years of service, he retired from BASF Corporation as a research scientist. His love and interest in music have prepared him to lead this class. The Vietnam War, the most divisive issue since the Civil War, hit the US political/ military scene in the late 50s and grew to a full uproar in the 60s. It ushered in, or was ushered into, an era of youthful involvement in the national decisions and called attention to the fact that never again would politicians govern unchallenged. It was a war that even in this day can engender a public debate with everyone holding a passionate opinion and quickly expressing it. This course will examine the events leading to the Vietnam War and the era of protests it spawned at home and abroad. The course will also cover the non-military aspects of the war, such as the changing political climate in the United States during the late 1960s which had a profound impact on the outcome of the struggle, as well as a look at the leadership of the era. (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.) Professor Emeritus Pat Mulligan retired in 1999 from Anderson University; she served the ex pat communities abroad in Russia and Turkey before retiring in 2014.

American Sign Language 8 | Lifelong Learning Institute
For some fifty years of the 20th century, Carl Sandburg loomed large on the American scene: writing poems by the hundreds; a six-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln; two books of Rootabaga Stories for children; one historical novel, Remembrance Rock; and autobiographies. He also published The American Songbag, a collection of folk songs he gathered and edited. This course will focus on Sandburg’s poetry. The rough-hewn son of Swedish immigrants on the Illinois prairie often wrote as spokesman for the down to earth and down and out. This course includes a trip to Carl Sandburg’s place. (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.) Lawrence Webb is a writer, minister, traveler, and professor emeritus of journalism. He is well known for his work in theater and writers’ groups. He also serves as Board Chair of the Lifelong Learning Institute at Anderson University. An introduction to the identification, life history, ecology and importance to humans of birds commonly observed in Anderson County, SC. Approximately twenty birds will be highlighted. Techniques for observation of birds by sight and sound will be presented. Field observations of birds in their native habitat in the Anderson University wetland and upland will be the culmination of the course. How to become involved in “citizen science” through birding will be emphasized. Binoculars required. (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.) Drs. Kozel and Norris are Professor and Associate Professor, respectively, of Biology at Anderson University. Dr. Norris is long-time participant in the SC Christmas Bird count and other organized birding activities. Join us for instruction and practice for the basic waltz and enjoy casual and social dancing. This course includes 30 minutes of instruction (6:00-6:30) and an hour of practice and observation on our own (6:30-7:30). (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.) Dennis Adams, a lifelong resident of Anderson, has been teaching dance as a hobby for 15 years in the Anderson area. He and his wife, Debbie, are well-known for their dancing and community involvement. Session 1: Dr. Bob Hanley will assist in our exploration of Steinbeck’s early life and the factors that shaped him as a writer. Session 2: Dr. Margaret Wooten will facilitate our discussion of Travels with Charley. Session 3: We will examine the economic, social, political, and cultural forces at work in the turbulent era captured in The Grapes of Wrath. Session 4: Dr. Hanley and participants will analyze the plot and characters of the novel and discover both villains and heroes. (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.) Dr. Bob Hanley earned his B.A. and M.A. in English from Clemson University and the Ph.D. in English Education from the University of Georgia. He has taught in higher education for thirty-six years and provided a variety of presentations at the local, state, and national level. Dr. Margaret Wooten, Professor of English at Anderson University, earned three degrees in English: B.A. from Wake Forest University, M.A. from Appalachian State University, and PH.D. from the University of South Carolina. She has made various professional presentations and has taught college students all of her adult life. Functional fitness helps seniors adjust better to changes by enhancing their lifestyles and empowering their bodies. Functional fitness is founded upon the five functional movement patterns of the body, the activities of daily living, balance, and flexibility. Exercise, that is actually functional, is one of the most important interventions that can be done in regards to senior independence and health. Jill states the verse that supports her thinking is ISAIAH 40:29 “HE increaseth strength.” Jill Bramlett, certified in senior fitness through the American Council on Exercise, designed this course for seniors. “Because of the gap for seniors in exercise and daily living, I used my expertise to develop this course. Come join us! It’s for YOU!” This basic sign course introduces you to the culture of deaf people and their language. It offers you the opportunity to build basic skills in communicating in American Sign Language. This is an overview of American Sign Language (ASL), its

basic vocabulary, structure, syntax and grammar. Focus will be on mastering the basics of fingerspelling, numbers, colors, facial grammar and sentence structure; participants will also learn conversational/cultural behaviors necessary to hold a beginning-level conversation in ASL, with deaf/hard-of-hearing native users of the language. Introductory information about deaf culture, along with deaf humor, provides students a broad picture of language and culture. (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.) Becky Walker has served as a community interpreter and a vocational rehabilitation counselor for the deaf and has over 30 years working with the deaf. She also served as a Missionary to the deaf in the Middle East for 6 years and continues to work with the deaf people in Anderson. She presently works at Anderson University in women’s ministry.

Dance and Its Influence on “Just About Every Kind of Popular Music Performed Today!”

In this interactive course, participants learn about the culture and performance traditions of West African drumming and dance, specifically the Malinke people of Conakry Guinea. The music, dance, and other performance traditions of West Africa have had a widespread influence on popular music of past and present generations, including jazz, blues, fusion, Motown, rock music, hip-hop, and more. Through demonstrations using authentic instruments, interactive discussions, video recordings, media presentations, and hands-on drumming and dance (optional), participants will explore the joy-filled and rich cultural contributions of West African music both in its traditional forms and its influence on expressions of popular music and culture today. (Available for teachers for recertification credit, too.) Dr. David L. Perry (B.M., M.M., D.M.A., Arizona State University) is an Associate Professor of Music at Anderson University, SC, where he serves as Chair of the Music Department, Director of Music Education, Director of the AU West African Ensemble, and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in music education.

Are you new to the Bible? Are you and your Bible old friends? Are you searching for a new way to look at and understand your Bible? In The One Story we will explore how to understand the Christian Bible from the unique perspective of the meta-narrative that it encompasses… 40+ writers, 66 documents, and written over a 1,500 year period. The One Story is a good refresher or a great study for those new to the Bible. Dr. Jim Motes is Associate Professor of Christian Studies at Anderson University. He brings fourteen years of teaching experience at AU and twenty years’ experience serving churches in Virginia, North and South Carolina to the classroom. Dr. Motes has a strong emphasis on discipleship in the Christian faith in the various courses he teaches. A Day Trip to Northeast Georgia’s lovely Sautee-Nacoochee Valley: folk pottery; area stories; and audiences with local experts. Join a small group from Anderson to explore the hill and dale of the Sautee-Nacoochee Valley -- one-time Cherokee farming valley, now home to artisans and specialty farmers. We’ll discover the products of the land, people who call the area home, and a unique sense of place. Price includes transportation, all touring, lunch. Departure from the Anderson University Athletics Center at 8:30 am; return around 4:30 pm. Transportation is by comfortable van, with step for easier entry. “Join me! We often go off the map and usually reemerge,” states Chumley Cope. He will share his love for area history and how he incorporates history with travel. Greenville in Harmony Show Chorus, the Upstate’s premiere all-female a cappella chorus, brought home the Regional Champion medal at the Sweet Adelines Region 14 Competition during the weekend of April 11-12 in Winston-Salem, NC. Known to contemporaries as “The Great War,” World War I pitted the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire against the Allied Forces of Great Britain, the United States, France, Russia, Italy and Japan. The introduction of modern technology to warfare resulted in unprecedented carnage and destruction, with more than 9 million soldiers killed by the end of the war in November 1918. Fresh flowers may be preserved with color and shape. Pressed flowers have long been used as decorative additions to cards, bookmarks, and beautifully framed pictures. Flower arranging continues to be an art skill. Learn to create a striking flower arrangement for a number of events. Brenda Thompson, a certified Master Gardener and an accredited Master Flower Show judge, enjoys nature in all forms. One may find Brenda in her flower garden, in her garden club, or meet her in the community as she volunteers. Chumley researches and visits areas around our area, in South Carolina, and around the world. During this session, he will share some of his findings for area day trips, as well as introduce places and trips he has taken and is planning for the community. Chumley Cope has a history of leading travel in the Southeast for more than ten years. His passion for both history and travel allow us to experience the beauties and sites of the area, state, nation, and world.
